1  Bitcoin / Mining / Best option for someone GPU mining? on: July 24, 2012, 04:35:03 PM
Well I haven't been here in months and so I've missed a lot. I see that FPGA / ASIC mining has pretty much taken over now. I still have my GPU miners running. They don't make much, pays the electric bill and maybe an extra $20 for my self each month. I'm just wondering if any one can point me in the right direction as to what pool would be best for someone still GPU mining. I hear good things about p2pool. I also read that LTC is more profitable to mine than BTC at the moment but I can't see how that is with the current exchange of 1 LTC = 0.006 BTC.

So basically what would be the best thing I could / should do if I still wanted to GPU mine?

3  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Safe to under clock graphics memory while using card as primary? on: June 23, 2011, 05:40:23 PM
I have a HD 5830 and HD 5850 in my personal computer which I use while mining. I use the HD 5850 as the primary card for my screen. I have the HD 5830's memory under clocked to 500 MHz. I want to know if its safe to under clock the memory of my HD 5850 with out causing problems since its being used as the primary card.
4  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Bitcoin client not receiving or confirming payments. on: June 13, 2011, 08:48:47 PM
I received a payment from BTCGuild a few hours ago and it hasn't gotten a single confirmation yet. I've restarted the client and still no luck. So I tried to send a payment from deepbit. I've waited an hour so far and no payment has been received. I'm getting very few connections to the network (1 - 2 connections). I haven't changed any thing with my computer or set up so I'm not sure what the problem could be.

Any one else experiencing this problem?
5  Bitcoin / Mining / HD 6950 Performance Questions on: June 08, 2011, 02:23:12 PM
I just got 2 x HD 6950's in yesterday and spent the day messing around with them seeing the max hash rate I could get. The cards I got are Gigabyte GV-R6950OC-1GD with 1 GB of RAM. To my disappointment the cards wouldn't unlock and with some research afterwards it turns out the 1 GB models are not unlockable (maybe someone can confirm this for me as well or maybe there is a way I can unlock it and just haven't come across it). So now I thought I'd post here to see what others have done to get the most out of their 6950's.

What I've tried so far:

In Ubuntu 11.04 using SDK 2.4 with poclbm I can get 348 Mhash/s @ 900 Mhz Core and ~1284 Mhz RAM. This is the max I can overclock the card with aticonfig. The original core clock is 870 Mhz so increasing to 900 Mhz isn't really a big difference.

I then tried with Windows 7. I could only get 280 Mhash/s using SDK 2.4 with poclbm and the card at 900 Mhz core and ~1284 Mhz RAM. I'm using the Catalysist version that came with the card. Maybe I need a older version for better hash rate? I tried using Afterburner to clock past 900 Mhz on the core but it would freeze every time.

What puzzles me is I see on the hardware chart on the bitcoin wiki (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison) that some people have gotten their 6950's past 900 Mhz and some even to 1000 Mhz on the core. I'm not sure why mine won't. Could it be because it's not unlocked or flashed to 6970 BIOS?

Any ways maybe someone has some ideas for me to try.
6  Economy / Marketplace / Need Suggestions on Paypal Freezing Bitcoin Payments on: May 15, 2011, 01:36:40 AM
I just sold some BTC on bitcoinmarket.com and have confirmed with the buyer that he did receive all of the bitcoins. The buyer sent the proper amount to my paypal account but 10 minutes later paypal froze that payment and asked for more information on the payment.

So there was nothing else I could do except reply back to paypal explaining why I received these and what they were for. I also attached the buyers email he sent me confirming his purchase and receiving the proper amount of bitcoins.

So my question is what happens next? What are some experiences people here have had with paypal and doing this sort of thing? I have a bad feeling that my account may be frozen after they review my explanation (due to the fact paypal doesn't care for bitcoin to much). If it is frozen and all funds in the account are frozen will I ever be able to withdraw them again?

I've never had a problem with paypal before so I do not understand why they would randomly freeze a payment and want me to give more information.

Any help or suggestions would be helpful.
7  Economy / Economics / Will Bitcoin ever drop down below 2 USD? on: April 30, 2011, 09:30:40 PM
I've noticed in the past week the price for 1 BTC to USD has really jumped and seems to keep getting higher.

Will the price for 1 BTC ever go below 2 USD again?
8  Bitcoin / Mining / Mining with 5850, boost performance? on: April 18, 2011, 06:45:03 PM
I got a HD 5850 and currently I am getting 248~ Mhash/s with Stream 2.1 running on Windows 7 using poclbm. Is there anything I can do to get more out my card or is this the max this card will go? I know there is the overclocking option but CCC and MSI After Burner sucks for going anything over the set maximum factory clock. I tried ATI tools but for some reason it didn't want to load the driver. Will riva tuner work?

What are some recommendations?

Also will switching to Ubuntu 10.10 have any difference?
9  Bitcoin / Mining / Pool with High hash rate vs pool with low hash rate? on: April 16, 2011, 07:55:45 PM
So I'm just getting into mining and I've tried slush, deepbit and btcmine pools. From what I've observed over the past few days is that each pool has roughly a steady total hash rate.

Deepbit: ~120Ghash/s
Slush: ~180Ghash/s
BTCmine: ~5.7Ghash/s

My question is will they all eventually equate to the same amount of earnings over time? I noticed that my estimated reward for slush over 1 hour is much lower than my estimated reward for btcmine. Now I'm assuming that this is because btcmine has fewer people mining and there for I get a larger portion but it will also take longer to finish a block on btcmine than slush's pool. To me it would seem that this would even out with the other pools over time but since I'm not 100% on the math and am fairly new to bitcoin maybe someone here can confirm this for me.

Also, if there is any benefit from mining on a pool with a higher hash rate apposed to a lower hash rate what would that be?
10  Economy / Marketplace / Best way to sell bitcoins and receive funds? on: April 09, 2011, 10:56:56 PM
Hello, I'm new to bitcoin and mining. I've been reading a lot on the forums and doing my fair share of research about it. One thing I haven't really found was a way to sell bitcoins (on the market or through disposable credit card) and then have the funds put into my paypal account. I see that Mt. Gox uses LibertyReserve but I'm not familiar with that service or even how it works. Also it would seem Mt. Gox only deals with US residents for direct deposit from what I read on their site. I'm from Canada.

I'd like to use paypal since it's already set up for my bank and would make it a lot easier to manage my funds in and out.

What are some recommendations?
