Everyone keeps talking about how the Mt.Gox price is artificially high because people are buying to get their coins/money out. But isn't it the case that USD deposits are not working either? With all the great innovations, steps forward, and publicity Bitcoin has gotten recently there are undoubtedly a lot of deposits held up from new players. It's like two damns facing eachother, and i'd bet the damn with deposits outsizes the damn with people looking to get out based on all the recent happenings.
But Ares, look at Bitstamp and other exchanges! Well when the market sentiment is that Gox is artificially inflating the price, of course those exchanges will be lower.
Thoughts?

He seems like just the type to be actively supportive of Bitcoin for a few reasons.
The last, and only thing, i've heard from Gates on the subject was that he thought it was a technical "tour de force". So it is clear he has a pretty strong appreciation for the code.
Also, I watched a Ted Talk where he did a presentation on alternative energy and the numerous humanitarian benefits it would bring and he comes off as genuinely doing it for the betterment of the Earth and its inhabitants, not for financial gain (from my perception, at least). He also cofounded the Bill and Melinda Foundation which supports initiatives in education, world health and population, and community giving. Point is, he likes to help the world, and we all know how huge a role Bitcoins can play in developing countries and those with corrupt governments, among other benefits.
So why has he shown little to no interest (publicly, at least)? It just seems like a man so famous in software would actively support one of the greatest software initiatives in the world.
Is he invested in assets that Bitcoins threaten? Even so, I can't imagine money is much of a motivator for him any longer.
or maybe he is Satoshi.

Quote from John Lyons, CEO of the International Cyber Security Protection Alliance: "As highlighted by the latest initiative by the United States to arrest some of the suspects that were involved in Liberty Reserve (a group indicted for money laundering that ran a $6 billion worldwide operation out of Costa Rica), alternative payment mechanisms, such as Bitcoin and a host of others, can enable criminal and terrorist groups to launder money and fund their operations. Governments of the world have the ability right now to ban these payment mechanisms." From page 60: http://www.newsdeskmedia.com/files/G8-UK-2013.pdfAnyone know much about him or who might take his suggestion seriously?

Note: when I say "ban", I mean pass legislation or use some other means to effectively prohibit Bitcoin usage, purchase or other acquisition.
Let's take Fincen, for example. The heads of Fincen are clearly aware of Bitcoin and probably understand it entirely. With that in mind, they undoubtedly see its potential and I'd bet that they all own some (as most people who understand Bitcoin do). For that reason, it is in their financial best interest not to ban it.
Morally, you would have a very tough time convincing yourself the potential for bad outweighs the potential for good with Bitcoin and so it is in their moral best interest not to ban it.
Both of these reasons also make bribery or other corrupted means by those who are threatened by Bitcoin far less effective.
This applies to everyone in a position to write anti-Bitcoin legislation.
Short of a "ban", a superior currency will inevitably prevail.

Curious on what you think the catalyst will be. A major firm adopting BTC? Randomly induced panic buying? More clairvoyance on a non anti-bitcoin stance by the US Gov?
What do you expect to see at the top of Reddit Bitcoin when you wake up to a giant price spike and continued upward movement?

Edit: People are missing my point, I know this guy is an independent troll (and an extremely poor one) and unaffiliated with the ripple company. TL;DR: There are already people with incentives to promote XRP over Bitcoin, and once ripple is big enough, the creators can, and will, just stop dealing with Bitcoin altogether and promote XRP as the new BTC. They only ever used BTC to get the ball rolling. So by the time many of you read this, the threads will probably all have been deleted, but there is a spammer right now making threads about the fed about to announce a worldwide bitcoin seizure and other random FUD across all the forums here, all while promoting ripple. He probably wasn't told by ripple to do this, so ask yourself, why would someone want to demote bitcoin but promote ripple if they are truly complementary? What benefit would this bring to the spammer? Right now, yes, ripple and bitcoin can coexist just fine and even help eachother. But ripple is simply a parasite using bitcoin as a host. They need some way to get the ball rolling, and bitcoin is their ticket. Then, once popular enough, they will come out and say "it just makes more sense to use XRP instead of Bitcoin" and detach. Then Bitcoin will once again be back to square one for trying to steer the public away from a centralized currency, meanwhile the ripple employees are rich as all hell from holding half of all the XRP. Even misterbigg (one of the most relentless ripple shills here) admitted to this in his thread: then maybe in some distant future Ripple could be a competitor to Bitcoin For those interested, I snagged a quote from the aforementioned spammer: ATTENTION:
THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY, THE FEDERAL RESERVE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND THE UNITED STATES TREASURY HAVE RAIDED MORE THAN A DOZEN KEY BITCOIN INDIVIDUALS AND IS ABOUT TO ANNOUNCE A FULL SCALE BITCOIN CONFISCATION FOR MONEY LAUNDERING
BITCOINS CAN COTAIN "SILK ROAD TAINT" IF YOUR BITCOIN INPUTS HAS BEING IN A TRANSACTION SENT TO THE SILK ROAD. MONEY LAUNDERING CHARGES ARE BEING PROSECUTION, THEYMOS HAS SIGNED A PLEA BARGAIN. THE SEIZURE WILL BE ANNOUNCED IN THE NEXT FEDERAL RESERVE MEETING, SIMILAR TO THE CLOSURE OF THE GOLD WINDOW.
RIPPLE IS NOT AFFECTED
But, as always, i'm open to being proven wrong. Just please read my post carefully and understand that I believe ripple's goal is to replace bitcoin IN THE FUTURE once it's on its feet, so spare me the arguments of how it can help out bitcoin in the present.

I had never heard of Webmoney, but it was described on here as the PayPal of Russia. I don't yet fully understand Webmoney's system and how Bitcoin plays into it, but would it make business sense for Paypal to do something similar, aside from doing it just to stay relevant in the future? If so, is it unreasonable to think they would?

I think one of the greatest aspects of Bitcoin is that you can tip anyone, anywhere, anytime, for any amount and I suspect one day all youtube videos and blog posts will end in a QR code, and QR Code posters will be set up at the exits of school plays etc...
I'm curious if this is currently happening frequently. For those of you who have addresses in your signature, or post on reddit, have you been tipped?

Google now allows you to attach money to an e-mail. Could this become a super-easy means of putting USD on an exchange? Thread on the gmail feature: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=206467.0User who sparked the thought: I wonder if I can fund bitcoin exchanges with google?

I suspect that a lot of Gox users will see this as the final straw and leave Gox, and others who may like gox will be worried about funds being frozen due to the whole dwolla issue (I know that may never happen, but the concern is certainly real), and leave Gox.
So, where do we suspect they will most likely go? BTC-E? BitStamp? If BTC-E, we can probably expect an alt-coin rise.

The Bitcoin Foundation, or some other prominent group/individual should start a forum thread or e-mail list in order to organize mass amounts of people to show support for Bitcoin to a selected company or organization, updated every day or so with a new objective. For example, this thread was a smashing success (though it was on reddit too): https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=194780.0When online poker was effectively banned, the Poker Player's Alliance emerged to "lobby" for online poker through recruiting 1mil+ ordinary people to join. There is a thread updated every day with an action plan for everyone to follow and it has gotten A LOT accomplished and we now see states with online poker legislation. Thoughts?

If you scroll down, you can see his unedited post: Ready? Give me just a few minutes.
Edit
Now who wants to know how I did that? It wasn't by selling it coins. It was by BUYING. It was because the people at gox are insider trading scumbags who are watching my account in an attempt to put me out of business.
The price drops earlier happened for the same reason.
I have this and several other instances of this captured and video recorded.

I sent them a message requesting that they do a piece on bitcoins and this was their response: Re:Bitcoins We've definitely been considering that, where can we find out more info on Bitcoins? I'll certainly suggest weusecoins.com, but my response is also an opportunity to suggest talking points, such as big news in the Bitcoin world. I'm making this thread to get some ideas on how best to respond. Thanks

If ripple allows near free transfer of fiat to anyone, anywhere, anytime, then doesn't that remove one of the primary advantages of bitcoin?
What grounds would we have to sell merchants on bitcoin when they can get the same benefit using fiat through ripple?
This seems to outweigh any benefit brought by ripple to the bitcoin community
Edit: this same post (after being ignored for pages), was addressed by JoelKatz in the "Ripple or Bitcoin" thread in the Bitcoin Discussion forum. Mods - feel free to delete unless you feel this is deserving of it's own discussion
