2  Bitcoin / Wallet software / IMPORTANT: Ledger ConnectKit Library has been Compromised with a drainer. on: December 14, 2023, 01:33:08 PM
Apparently, Ledger is in the news again for the wrong reasons.

At first, SuchiSwap CTO (one of the leading DEXs) made a tweet about the suspected vulnerability.

The primary issue is that the Ledger ConnectKit NPM package Library that is used across majority of decentralized applications was updated few hours ago with malicious code (drainer):

How come?

It looks like the NPM key was leaked via a github action  which means Anyone can invoke the action via a PR on Ledger's GitHub Orgs, then leak that key by crafting a malicious package.json.

Right now, any user interacting with any and all Dapps could potentially be exposed to the vulnerability and end up losing all funds to drainers. According to my research so far, it doesn't include users who are just using Ledger for day-to-day transfers with no interactions and prior interactions before the vulnerability was disclosed appears to good.

Side note: This only shows how poorly the Ledger team takes security and their continued negligence of the security of their products and services.

Update #1: Ledger has confirmed the vulnerability report:
Quote
🚨We have identified and removed a malicious version of the Ledger Connect Kit. 🚨

A genuine version is being pushed to replace the malicious file now. Do not interact with any dApps for the moment. We will keep you informed as the situation evolves.

Your Ledger device and Ledger Live were not compromised.

4  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / BREAKING: Square & Twitter's Boss, Jack Dorsey buys $50M worth of Bitcoin. on: October 08, 2020, 02:47:05 PM
One of the news topping today's headline is the one about Square (A payment firm run by Jack Jorsey) added over $50M (~ approx. 4709 BTC) to its portfolio.

Announcing the news on Thursday, Square said “cryptocurrency is an instrument of economic empowerment and provides a way to participate in a global monetary system, which aligns with the company’s purpose.”

The investment represents approximately 1% of Square’s total assets as of Q2 2020.

"We believe that bitcoin has the potential to be a more ubiquitous currency in the future," said Square’s CFO Amrita Ahuja. "As it grows in adoption, we intend to learn and participate in a disciplined way. For a company that is building products based on a more inclusive future, this investment is a step on that journey."

Square becomes the second US-based cooperate organization after Microstrategy to invest in Bitcoin.

Jack has always been a huge fan of Bitcoin and one of the first few public figures to openly embrace Bitcoin and its technology. So I'm not really surprised with this move. This could be good and bad news for the crypto community.

  • Bad news: If more companies keep buying huge stacks of BTC, They might own enough to become manipulative and do things their own way.

  • Goodnews : Bitcoin is getting the much needed attention and soon enough, more companies would buy in and the value would increase ~ possibly to everyone's dream price of $50,000 or more. Also, If these companies integrate Bitcoin to their products. For example, Square processes billions of dollars worth of transactions  yearly.

What do you think about this? Feel free to share.

Update: Bitcoin is up 2%+ since the news was released and the market is starting to look greenish again  Smiley
5  Economy / Exchanges / Not your keys, not your Crypto – Kucoin Hacked! $150m Stolen. on: September 26, 2020, 01:54:35 AM
This is yet another reason why storing large amount of funds on exchanges is a bad idea.

It appears Kucoin exchange has been hacked. For the past 7 hours, Over $150m in Ethereum and other erc20 tokens have been withdrawn to an unknown wallet here: https://etherscan.io/address/0xeB31973E0FeBF3e3D7058234a5eBbAe1aB4B8c23

Bitcoin outflows were moved to Bitfinix.

Kucoin's Responses

Their telegram chat has gone haywire since then as worried users have been asking about an update. Alicia (Head of VIP at Kucoin) replied:

Things doesn't add up here. If the funds were being moved by Kucoin, they wouldn't be investigating. It's either you or not. Users have reported seeing empty balances and currently withdrawal and deposits has been disabled. Since we have different DeXs available now, the hacker can easily unload all those funds.

While this isn't a "confirmed" hack yet, this is a friendly reminder to everyone who still stores loads of funds on exchanges. Your funds are a lot more safer when they're stored in your private wallet. I will keep updating the thread.

Update 1:

Looks like the hacker is cashing out using shitcoins  available in decentralized exchanges. If this is a joke by Kucoin, then it's an interesting one

Update 2: – Hack Confirmation

Kucoin just confirmed the hack:

We detected some large withdrawals since September 26, 2020 at 03:05:37 (UTC+8). According to the latest internal security audit report, part of Bitcoin, ERC-20 and other tokens in KuCoin’s hot wallets were transferred out of the exchange, which contained few parts of our total assets holdings. The assets in our cold wallets are safe and unharmed, and hot wallets have been re-deployed.

We are locating the reason for the incident, and will keep you updated once it is confirmed. Please rest assured that if any user fund is affected by this incident, it will be covered completely by KuCoin and our insurance fund.

To ensure the security of users’ assets, we will conduct a thorough security review. The deposit and withdrawal service will be suspended during the period. We will restore the service gradually after ensuring a safe state. We will keep you updated.

As "The People’s Exchange", we will take full responsibility and maintain transparency. To keep you updated regarding the latest updates, our CEO Johnny Lyu will update more details through a livestream at 12:30 (UTC+8), September 26, 2020. Please submit your questions here if you have any.

We greatly appreciate your understanding and support.

The KuCoin Team

Update 3:
More funds are being moved. Hack still on.

Update 4:

In response to the hack, Kucoin's CEO hosted a livestream to discuss details of the hack: https://www.kucoin.com/news/en-kucoin-ceo-livestream-recap-latest-updates-about-security-incident

Update 5:

Tether Treasury has frozen over $20M tethers that were stolen. They're still about $120M of movable funds + some projects have agreed to invalidate some stolen tokens from their supply: https://www.kucoin.com/news/en-kucoin-ceo-livestream-recap-latest-updates-about-security-incident

The bottom line is, Kucoin will refund the stolen funds thanks to their insurance.

6  Other / Beginners & Help / Road to Hero Rank + My Bitcointalk story (motivation & Journey). on: August 31, 2020, 12:41:01 PM
Hello Everyone, If you're reading this, say hello to the soon-to-be hero member of the community. 🙏

I'll keep the thread as short as possible, wouldn’t want to bore y'all with long talks.

On becoming a member:

In late 2016, I picked an interest in bitcoin, then I did a couple of Google searches about bitcoin and this forum was in a lot of the results so I got here and read some threads. I even got to read the one made by the man himself, Satoshi. The movement sounded interesting so it didn't take long for me to become a member of bitcointalk. I became a member of this wonderful community on November 14, 2016. As a new member, I barely knew anything about key terms like bitcoin, cryptocurrencies, blockchain etc.

With time, I got familiarized with some concepts, terms and nitty-gritty stuffs, too. Becoming a hero member has been one of my goals since I joined the community. It has taken me years to achieve it due to the fact that I got admitted to a university to study computer science so majority of my time was spent on books. That is also the reason why I was inactive for several months. Right now, my school workload is a bit reduced so I'm still on track with my goals.

Bitcointalk Services-  My first freelance gig

Like everyone else,  this community has been an integral part of my life since joining. I've learnt and experienced so much. Thanks to the earning opportunities on the forum, I was able to get myself some web development courses to learn and practice. On June 28th, I got a pm from the OP of this thread about working on a web project and God so kind, I got my very first freelance gig here on the forum and the feeling was aaaamazing! Since Bitcoin is spearheading the next generation of financial system, it's important to know that we can get skilled up in blockchain/crypto and be able to benefit from everything bitcoin offers to us. A lot of companies pays their employees with bitcoin and other cryptos. It's happening!

Motivation and Highlights:

Bitcoin is a movement, one that I'm glad to be a part of. The next couple of years would be phenomenal for everyone currently in the space. Being part of the next financial evolution  alongside other strong believers and enthusiasts has been one of my biggest motivation till date.

Some threads I was opportune to write:

Gratitude:
I want to say thank everyone  who has played a vital role in my time here on the forum, whether you pointed out a mistake I made, merited me etc, I want to say a big thank you for bringing me a step closer to my goal.

To everyone else looking to get to higher ranks, just keep persevering. With time, everything will fall in to place.

Next steps:

To become more involved with the community and contribute to more open source projects (crypto-related) with my coding skills!
7  Other / Beginners & Help / [Guide] - How to use different order types. on: August 07, 2020, 09:14:13 AM
When it comes to trading, we're a lot more interested in other concepts of technical analysis like chart patterns, candlestick patterns, indicators, etc. Just like other concepts, order types are also a fundamental unit in trading. Since there are many order types, knowing which one to use at any given is critical. But first, let me discuss what an order type is.

What are order types?
Order types refers to the position at which trader can take at any particular time. Whether it's a long or short, there's an order type for it. That said, let me discuss order types that are available on most crypto exchanges.

1. Market order:
A market order is a type of order that allows us to place an order at the current market price. A possible use case would be when you want to buy or sell immediately, without any delays, market order is the order type you want to use. Although I don't use it often, it's still has it uses.

2. A limit order:
A limit order order offers more flexibility than market order as it allows us to pick a price we're willing to buy or sell at (could be after our market analysis). Unlike a market order where you would typically not be allowed to set a price, with a limit order you can. The most common use case is when you want to only buy or sell an asset when it gets to a specific price level.

3. Stop Limit:
If you've heard about the concept of putting stop loss on your trades, this is it. A stop limit order allows us to put a "stop" to our limit orders. It's an order you want to put in case the trade doesn't go your way and it helps mitigate and reduce losses incurred. It's typically used when we already have an existing position and we want to make sure we reduce our losses when things doesn't go as planned.

For instance, When Bitcoin flash crashed from $12,000+ to ~ $10,550 last week, a stop loss order at $11,900 would have helped you save over around $1400 or more.

Stop limit order (stop loss) is an essential tool is a trader's toolbox if used correctly.

4. Trailing Stop limit:
What if there's a way to track the price while your position is in profit and still trending? In a case, it's tiresome to always keep track of the prices at all time time. What if you can do it automatically? That's where a trailing stop limit order comes in. It is designed to protect profits by allow a trade to remain open and continue to profit as long as the price is moving in our favor. It only closes the trade if the price changes direction by a specified percentage.  Trailing stop limit is a little more advanced as you would need to set parameters like the percentage you want to keep track of. Like stop limit order, its also helpful if used correctly.

5. One-Cancels-the-other  (OCO)

One-Cancels-the-other is an order type that allows us to combine two orders at the same time. It combines a limit order, with a stop-limit order, but only one of the two can be executed at an particular time and when it does, the other one gets canceled automatically.  OCO is my favorite order type as it allows me to have the best of both worlds – set a limit order for a price I'm willing to buy / sell  and also have a stop loss in place when if the market goes in the other direction.

Here's an example use case: Say you bought bitcoin at $9800 and you're more than happy to sell when it gets to $11,000 but whenever it gets below below $9760, you want to place a stop loss in case it drops more. That's where OCO comes in. You can set a limit order at $11000 and a stop limit at $9760.

The Lesser Known order types:

Aside from the above mentioned order types like limit, stop-limit, market orders, there are other order types that are available but these aren't used as much as the others as they're more technical and advanced. Here's a straightforward explanation:

1.Good 'Til Canceled (GTC) - This order will be placed on the order book and remain valid until you cancel it or when it gets filled.

2. Immediate or Cancel (IOC) - The order will be filled immediately and completely, or it is cancelled without being filled at all.

3. Fill or Kill (FOC) - This order will only complete if the entire amount can be matched. Partial matches are not filled with this order type and will not execute

These type of orders are available on exchanges like coinbase and bittrex.

Trading is profitable when you know the right tools to use at any given time. Just like other trading concepts, knowing the right order type to place at anytime is vital.

As a trader, what is your favorite order type? And why?

Looking forward to your answers 😉

It helps to keep track of trades – You can integrate it with your exchange of choice (Binance, Kucoin, Coinbase and more) . In addition to helping users keep track of their trades and orders, blockfolio recently introduced a feature called – "Blockfolio Signal"  which allows users to access updates from their favorite crypto/blockchain startup all in one place.
