You will need to configure your bitcoin client to operate on the testnet in order to participate in the testing. Here is a working testnet faucet if you need some testnet bitcoin. During the testing phase, any amount of testnet bitcoin sent to the bitcoin address presented at the top of the web page will give you a 3 minute call credit. Have you called your mother recently? Hello All, Today I'm interested in using a testnet URI with Bitcoin-QT I found this post: https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/issues/2301That indicates that Gavin was experimenting with some code that would automatically detect a testnet address and launch the client in the appropriate mode. My testing would indicate that this feature has not made it into 0.8.1. Anybody know the latest on this topic?

Hello All,
Just installed 0.8.1 on a Windows 7 64bit. I'm running on testnet by adding the -testnet command line parameter.
The client synced initially, then I noticed some time later that it was out of sync and was needing to download approximately 38K blocks.
The first time I was going to write it off as a fluke, but it has happened several times in the past few hours.
What information can I provide to troubleshoot further?

Just finished reading some of the topics relating to concerns about the present and eventual size of the block chain.
Presently, the .bitcoin directory which contains the block chain is in excess of 600MB. In my opinion, this is a non-trivial amount of disk space. I among others have developed environments designed to assist with client security that involve running the client from a USB memory stick or other devices with resource limitations.
I read in one post, that it not necessary for every client to download/save the entire block chain in order to send/receive bitcoin. Is a bitcoin client with this feature somewhere on the horizon?

This article is an interview with someone who is using their employers computer lab to mine for bitcoins. The employer happens to be a school somewhere in New York. The article does not say if the school is publicly or privately funded. The person being interviewed indicates that he is doing this for personal gain and says: Is that illegal?
Well, Bitcoins are legal. Using the computers to do this? I am pretty sure that’s a grey area. I’d be hard-pressed to tell you which law I was breaking. I am pretty sure my employers wouldn’t be thrilled if they found it though.
Really!? This person doesn't think stealing electricity and other resources from their employer is illegal? This is not like stealing office supplies for person use. This is like stealing office supplies and opening up an office supply store. @IT Director, your ignorance of the law and lack of a moral compass is surprising, and the fact that you were willing to be interviewed about this is even more surprising. I think you should either desist immediately, or take the idea of using school resources in this fashion to your employer and put the gains towards something that will benefit the school. Unfortunately, the 60 CPUs you have available for this purpose will likely not make for a compelling case in favor of this project.

There are people making statements beginning with "Now that bitcoin is getting big..." I think comments may be misleading to newcomers. Bitcoin is often criticized for being nothing but hype. Although it's impossible to know exactly how many bitcoin users there are, a chart in this post suggests that there might be approximately 20 thousand active bitcoin users. The wikipedia article for PayPal reports that Paypal has 87 million active accounts. And this recent article reports that they have 100 million accounts. If we take the 100 million number for Paypal, the bitcoin user base is roughly 0.02% the size of PayPal's. Bitcoin is very much in its infancy, but certainly has a lot of promise. Bitcoin has the potential to reach users that are excluded from the PayPal system because they have no accessing to the existing global financial network.

I've been thinking that a specilized *nix distro running as a Virtual Machine (VM) off a USB drive might be a way to secure the bitcoin wallet. And if that USB drive happened to be a device like the Sansa Clip+, a backup of the wallet could be made to memory in the microSD slot.
Parameters for this solution would include: * No direct access to the wallet file via the host OS. * Wallet file should be stored on some kind of encrypted file system within the VM * Access to wallet file should be tightly controlled in VM OS * User level access on the VM should only be allowed communicate with the bitcoin daemon via a secure channel
That's the germ of the idea anyway. Does this have any merit?

I currently make a living removing malware from Windows systems.
I know that I am not the first to suggest that there will be (or already is) malware designed to either steal wallet data or just send all the victims bitcoin to the authors own address.
I've been reading that we'll be seeing encrypted private keys in memory and on disk.
Is that going to be the main line of defense against such a threat? Will we be able to specify a "key file" instead of or in addition to a password? Any idea when this feature will be incorporated into the stable release available on bitcoin.org?

We are seeing an ever increasing number of bitcoin related financial services being offered. We have a number of exchanges, eWallets, tip jars, escrow services, credit unions, and countless offline apps. Some of these services are tasked with safeguarding user's bitcoins.
For the sake of discussion, let's consider an online eWallet system. A successful eWallet system, one that has many users and a large quantity of bitcoin on deposit, is basically a huge pile of cash sitting inside a computer. Where is that computer? Is it in a highly secure NOC somewhere or in somebody's kitchen. Are backups being performed, if so how often? Where and how are the backups stored, are they secure? The list is endless.
A hacker doesn't need to steal the private key / bitcoin wallet. They would just need to use it long enough to make a very large transfer to their own account.
If there's a million bitcoin sitting on a computer somewhere worth worth who knows how much fiat currency, we are going to see a hacker challenge the likes of which the world has never seen!
The people participating in this forum are laying the foundation for a new economy. A large scale theft would be a major setback to the bitcoin project.
I see a great need for developing security recommendations and best practices for any entity offering services that involve storing bitcoin on behalf of their owner. After that's done, organizations can be formed to audit these entities to ensure compliance (another new business opportunity).
Is anyone here interested in working on this?

About a week ago, in this post, I presented the concept of bitcoinID. My intention is to accept bitoin in exchange for a Class 2 S/MIME certificate issued by a top level Certificate Authority (CA). The S/MIME certificate can then be used to link a flesh and blood person to their digital persona. A bitcoinID is then derived from the public key contained in the S/MIME certificate. Users can then link bitcoin addresses to their bitcoinID at bitcoinID.com. The bitcoinID can then serve as a common point of reference for an unlimited variety of reputation based systems. The actual bitcoinID number is a “fingerprint” or SHA-224 hash of the subject's Class 1 or Class 2 S/MIME public key. I chose SHA-224 because it should eliminate the possibility of duplicate bitcoinIDs being created. Anyone possessing the public key of the subject can derive the bitcoinID using freely available software. The algorithm for generating a bitcoinID is not proprietary. Although it would be a trivial matter for bitcoinID.com to issue a bitcoinID to anyone who has a bank account or credit card, by using this method a bitcoinID has no linkage with the existing banking system. This method serves to include people who have been excluded by existing financial institutions. BitcoinID.com is counting on a CA to do the job it was designed to do. That is, to collect, evaluate and protect information that can be used to confirm a person's identity. Instead of relying on financial institutions, who have repeatedly demonstrated that they are not trustworthy, can we instead place our trust with Certificate Authorities? Matt

Potential donors can view the bitcoinID Card of an individual or organization on bitcoinID.com. If the bitcoin address being advertised matches the bitcoin address displayed on the bitcoinID Card and the security level for the bitcoinID satisfies the donor, the donation can be sent to the bitcoin address with confidence that it will be delivered to the intended recipient.
