I've been wondering this for awhile. Can these patents go through if they are built on top of open source code?
A quick read through some of the applications don't sit well with me. They remind me of the 'shopping cart' patents and a lot of those early patents that were granted and later used by troll attorneys.
My fear is that sometime down the road we ( any crypto developer ) could be accused of patent infringement because of the broad scope of how these patents are being applied for, and is there anything the crypto community can do to insure that doesn't happen.
