Today, at 1p.m in Warsaw in front of the building of Polish Ministry of Finance (Świętokrzyska 12 Street) traders of crypto and some of the main politics such as Jacek Wilk (from Liberty political party) and many main figures for polish cryptocurrencies community started their protest in response to guidelines for taxes on crypto, published by Polish Ministry of Finance. The government’s decision as the cause of the protest Ministry decided to put 1% tax of the total value on each crypto to crypto transaction and force traders to fill in and send special PCC (stamp duty) document each time they make transaction. Imagine somebody who is using bot to make many thousands transactions with a little profit. He would have to pay 1% tax and fill in as many thousands of paper sheets for every single transaction. Today’s event was observed on Facebook approximately by 700 viewers and have met with huge interest of some journalists from public media. Over 1000 protester gathered together with banners and slogans , like: “ We are free so we want freedom for our cryptocurrencies”, “We want to pay equal taxes” etc. Mission statement of this happening was- “We want to pay easy taxes for crypto”. During this happening people decided to make a competition for participants -they fill in the PCC form. Each person who brought PCC paper got token and t-shirt as a reward. That was their way of showing observer how hard, grind and needles is this action. The meeting lasted 1,5 hour. Traders presented all their demands to undersecretary of finance Paweł Cebulski. Eventually, Polish Ministry of Finance decided to withdraw PCC (stamp duty) on cryptocurrencies. They planned another meeting to talk about the crypto to crypto taxes.There is still one issue because some of traders already paid PCC, so Ministry will have to make a solution . Today’s picket, as expected, went very peacefully. The main aim was reached. This event caused the beginning of initializing effort for common good, which are fair taxes and equal regulation. How exactly do you plan to do that?Alex Fork: There are many aspects of our everyday life that require us to have our ID to hand – be it financial services, payments for remote work, healthcare and numerous others. But millions of people around the world don’t have identification, and therefore no access to the digital economy or banking. And yet, most of the world population do have access to a mobile phone. The software we have developed works with the cheapest hardware solutions on Android 5.0 – with smartphones that cost $10-$15. Such affordable devices are usually fitted with a front-facing camera that can identify and authenticate a user, and in addition allow the installation of a mobile wallet. Having gone through a bio-identification process, everyone is invited to earn additional coins by engaging friends and making transactions. Essentially, what we do is enable everyone to earn a living just by using their mobile phones. The possibility of putting your money to use in digital transactions, accessing the next-generation financial infrastructure, and having an ID all makes one a part of the modern world economy and even allows one to own part of a business. Is blockchain a breakthrough technology that can bring transparency to every aspect of social and political life? Or such a statement would be too far-fetched?Paul Snow: The blockchain is going to bring transparency to every aspect of politics, business, and culture. Perhaps more importantly, the blockchain is going to bring trust.
The problem with trust using centralized systems like social media, email, applications, documents, and databases is that these electronic records are subject to change. Those in control of those systems, from users to companies, can modify, delete, and add new information. Those in control can in effect modify the past.
Public blockchains remove the ability to edit, delete, and insert. Bitcoin has enormous security, with its Proof of Work, to the point that its records cannot be modified despite being distributed worldwide without any access restrictions. Banks are only secure if they can absolutely control who can enter their vaults, or who can log into their databases. In contrast, anyone in the world can inspect Bitcoin’s ledger (what Bitcoin uses for a vault and database for its value). But nobody can change anything because of the math Bitcoin uses.
Technologies like Factom allow that insurmountable security in Bitcoin’s ledger to be applied to ledgers of data. Factom supports unlimited digital ledgers that can be created and used by unlimited applications and purposes, without restriction. These decentralized „books” of entries can be created, added to by many parties, audited, and validated by its users. They can refer to entries in other ledgers. This can be leveraged to create distributed digital identities, audit trails, manage devices in the Internet of Things (IoT) and more.

In 2017 the world finally started looking at blockchain and distributed ledgers applications beyond cryptocurrencies. We have seen some early adopters in financial and supply chain world, but definitely 2017 was when we saw great growth – says Marta Pierkarska, Hyperledger’s Director of Ecosystem, in Bithub.pl’s #SundayInterview. Let’s start with the blockchain landscape in general: would you say that 2017 was a breakthrough year for this technology? Marta Piekarska: I think in 2017 the world finally started looking at blockchain and distributed ledgers applications beyond cryptocurrencies. We have seen some early adopters in financial and supply chain world, but definitely 2017 was when we saw great growth. Even if you look at Hyperledger – we hit 200 members at the end of the year, and already have more enterprises joining. We are proud of the work our vibrant and diverse community has accomplished, having released the first production build of Hyperledger Fabric, and waiting to do more next year.
I think that the technology foundations have now been set. Your tool is a decentralized Key Management System. How does it work?
MacLane Wilkinson: We use proxy re-encryption to provide decentralized key management and cryptographic access controls. This means developers building decentralized applications can now store, share, and manage private data on public blockchains.Proxy re-encryption is fundamentally a more scalable form of public-key encryption that is well-suited for many-to-many data sharing environments. Traditional public-key encryption is good for one-to-one communication. The answer to the banking crisis is building banks from scratch. Being rebuilt from zero, prepared for new environments, prepared for new economic models, prepared for new P2P networks, prepared for zero cost societies, prepared for freemium models, prepared for new commerce – says Salvador Casquero Algarra, Founding Partner & Co-CEO in 2getherbank, in Bithub.pl’s #SundayInterview. What are the cardinal sins of traditional banking?Salvador Casquero Algarra: Among many others, banks biggest mistake was forgetting their primary function: promoting economic activity. They were born to facilitate economic flow (production-distribution-consumption) but they perverted this function when they were allowed to freely create money through:
– finantial intermediation,
– credit creation and
– fractional reserve.
They forgot to keep trust, confidence and client protection as their key obligations. But instead of that, they move their focus, they change their essence towards two other purposes:
– speculative purposes, which is a zero sum game (if I make money someone is loosing it),
– consumption purposes that it is not sustainable as it cannot last forever and it is unfair one as part of the world has more than they need whereas more than a half is missing the basic.
The banks built their profitable business model on one underlying: interest rates and at the same time Central Banks were driving them towards 0 or below zero breaking bank models. As many other times crisis came but this time something was different.
Banking alternatives, called fintechs, starting to emerge as flexible, faster, cheaper, fair options that completely unbundled bank offering. Money issuing was democratized and not „stupid” money, but smart one and not non-backed money, but intrinsic value one: blockchain
Banks cannot compete in this new environment because they have not prepared their culture, their organizations mind for completely new economic models beyond the exhausted capitalism and they have not prepared their infrastructures, their legacy, for a kind of chaotic innovation as it comes from everywhere, from everyone, for everyone: people empowerment.
