2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / I O T A -- David Sønstebø held an impromptu AmA on Discord on: January 20, 2018, 08:14:10 PM
David Sønstebø held an impromptu AmA on Discord. Here's all questions and answers.

"I  the foundation is stepping back from their 'training wheel' involvement with the Tangle ecosystem. I say this after witnessing CfB stating he isn't coming to Discord while also moving focus from the tangle to Jinn. Dom and David scaling back their level of communication."
We aren't really scaling back, just about priority of time
"Do you think IOTA could help with Brexit? The supply chain solutions IOTA enables could solve some of the major problems of Brexit. Mainly I'm thinking of the issue of the Northern Ireland border and the Single Market. Keep up the great work, and thankyou"
I still don't think Brexit will actually happen, at least not in any real capacity, the negotiations thus far is entirely symbolic. I'm not an expert on Northern Ireland vs rest of UK politics, so I'll refrain from issuing a superficial comment
"Where do you see yourself in 5 years?"
5 years is too far into the future to make any reasonable prediction, anyone who thinks they can even predict next week is a charlatan in my mind
"Do you have any targets for confirmation rate and CTPS over the next 3,6 and 12 months?"
definitely, we are aiming for 100-1000 CTPS by end of 2018, before going Uncoordinated mode where there is no actual limit
"when do you think we will be independent from btc? 2018?"
Define 'independent from btc', as all these new exchanges are listing IOTA we will naturally be a lot less 'tied' to bitcoin, however, as long as bitcoin is the de facto 'meta metric' to the majority of traders, it will still impact the entire crypto space
"Can you tell us any thing (even vaguely if you must) ABOUT PROJECT Q?"
Q will be quite the quaint upgrade
"what two things in the pipeline are you most excited about?"
Only two? Hmm.... CognIOTA is a big one, Q of course (but let's exclude it for the sake of this discussion), the next phase of phasing out the Coordinator
"How many Fullnodes we will need in future and will there be solution to have a full node very easy installation. At the moment its on limit for me and i am a non programmer. I did it. but I think the potential would be more huge if its more easy. But also quality before quantity should be also."
Full node demand depends on demand on the network, but we are making it as easy as possible. We are operating with the principle that even a "grandma on crack" should be able to do it, same with Trinity wallet
"What do you think about Power Ledger?"
I haven't had time to look deep into Power Ledger, however as a general comment I will say that it is redundant. IOTA can provide the same, except then it is part of a larger ecosystem. Imagine having to acquire milk tokens, bread tokens, beer tokens, chicken tokens, frozen pizza tokens etc. when going grocery shopping. The overhead would cause too much friction. It is the same with any economic system. IOTA's goal is to become cash equivalent; fungible value settlements
"With increasing talk of moving to Network bound PoW does that mean that the ternary asic in every iot device is no longer the plan?"
No, N-PoW will be elucidated soon, it does not depend on a specific ASIC
"IBM and shipping giant Maersk launch blockchain company for global logisics. Any chance for IOTA?"
definitely. Maersk and IBM are first tackling the trade finance, bill of lading etc. issues, but IBM/Linux' Hyperledger cannot do the fine granular data integrity etc.
"Will you implement some kind of distributed coordinator before mid 2018?"
from the looks of it, yes
"Do you think there will be a problem with replacing cash with IOTA, as people would rather hodl on to their iotas than spend because of expected value increase?"
I don't see IOTA (or crypto in general) as a replacement to cash. I see it as a supplement. IOTA can do things that cash can't, but on the front-end regular users will still be able to relate to their native currencies
"do you Think the current market crash is Over?"
everyone know that I hate speculation and consider anyone that pretend to predict the future as a charlatan. I'll make a general comment: even if the crypto 'bubble' were to burst, I still believe the genuine projects that are actually building serious technology and serious relationships with companies will continue to grow. This is the case with all bubbles, whether it is the gold rush, dotcom, social media, nano tech or wtf. The serious entities prospered more than they did at the peak of the 'bubble'

IOTA Seed Guide, Tips, General Protection self.Iota

So after seeing a sudden rise in users having IOTA Funds stolen, I have decide to create a simple general guide to making sure users are not using seed generators from online websites that look, feel and act legitimate when in fact they are not.
Most importantly and first of all:
If you have used a online seed generator, I strongly advise you to withdraw and move you funds to a safe secure place and do not use an online seed generator.
If you think you have or have used a online seed generator and need help please head over to https://discordapp.com/channels/397872799483428865/397872799483428867 and devs will try their best to assist you.

Further Help & Advice:
Please keep you Personal computer up to date.
Keep your Anti Malware up to date and scan regularly.
Make sure your browser search page has not been hijacked.
Only use the Official IOTA Seed Generator.
Please only download IOTA Wallet Software from the Official IOTA Github
Avoid third party websites that recommend IOTA Seed Generators and also avoid YOUTUBE videos which may promote unofficial IOTA Seed Generators.
If you come across suspected fraudulent websites, please report using the Googles Report a Phishing Page : https://safebrowsing.google.com/safebrowsing/report_phish/?hl=en
Please read the Official IOTA Documentation
Please do NOT use online seed generators - you risk losing all your IOTAS!!!
Please do NOT use or click on any online seed generators in your search engine that start with a green [Ad] image in front of the address link. These are unofficial and WILL/CAN steal your IOTA's.
Notes:
I will add numerous links and build this thread up ASAP to help as much as i can to protect investors assets from fraud.
By all means if anyone has any unofficial websites that should be in the above list, post and i will add as i go.
Note: As advised by mods/devs of the IOTA Discord Channel, I have removed the list of fake online websites as this may promote. Its better to say outright DO NOT USE ONLINE SEED GENERATORS. Please report/avoid these sites and spread the word to raise awareness.
6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / ATTENTION -- IOTA -- USER on: January 19, 2018, 10:59:53 PM
ATTENTION

Repeat after me: I will never, ever, ever use any website to generate my seed

Recently, multiple users posted that their iotas were stolen. Some of them seemingly used websites to generate their seed, like iotaseed.co or iotaseed.net. (iotaseed.io might be legit or not)
It should be clear as daylight, this is crypto 1x1: Never use any website to generate your seed.
You don't know what code is running in the background of the website? Don't use it. It will almost certainly try to steal your seed.
If you want to be your own bank, you have to learn how to do it securely

Summary, IOTA moscow meetup
https://www.reddit.com/r/Iota/comments/7r23e0/summary_iota_moscow_meetup/

Hey! Just came back from IOTA Moscow meetup! Some of the news from the talk/presentation of Cfb and Max Minchenkov:
IOTA will move from PoW to Network-bound PoW in the future. It's an unique thing and details are not available.
smart contracts are in development. ETA is this year. It will be done not like eth smart contracts, but done in functional programming paradigm/style.
Max Minchenkov said that IOTA are doing a solution together with CISCO for an undisclosed oil company, where IOTA will provide software and CISCO hardware. No ETAs or any other info.
Ternary hardware is still in development. It will be ternary CPU and Li-Fi. No ETAs or any other info.
Cfb is more on hardware part now, other team members do work on IRI.
I can verify that people do build their own stuff on IOTA, personally saw a few teams today that build something on IOTA. And real word development on IOTA do happens outside of "crypto community". So the fact that it's quite in bitcointalk or even media means nothing. Work do progressing behind the doors.
I talked personally with Cfb. He is a very polite and intellegent person. Was too shy to say hello to Max Minchenkov."
Took the liberty to post this, copy from Ilya, on iota slack.

2017 was a big year for IOTA. Following the November announcement of plans to build a data marketplace with more than forty participants–including Microsoft, Volkswagen, and Fujitsu–the value of a single IOTA token skyrocketed from around $0.70 to over $5.30.

Learn how to buy Bitcoin and Ethereum safely with our simple guide!
IOTA was created in 2015 by David Sønstebø, Sergey Ivancheglo, Dominik Schiener, and Dr. Serguei Popov. Finance Magnates sat down with IOTA co-founder Dominik Schiener to speak in more depth about the announcement, the technology powering IOTA, and the IOTA Foundation’s plans for the IOTA network in 2018.

Can you explain how the Tangle is just as decentralized as a regular blockchain?
So there are two sides to the story. First, let’s start with where we are right now. So where we are right now, if you’ve already read the IOTA Whitepaper, the main assumption of the IOTA network is that it’s large enough to be self-sustainable.

What this means now is that in this infancy stage, where the network is still growing and more participants are joining, the network is susceptible to certain attacks, which is why right now we require this coordinator. The coordinator is basically there to help the network figure out which transactions are valid and which transactions are not valid.

Discover credible partners and premium clients at China’s leading finance event!

So it’s still decentralized, still validating, but there’s still this special node which basically acts as the training wheels. This enables the network to grow, to protect against double-spend attacks, and what we’re doing right now is we’re starting to gradually turn off the coordinator so the network becomes self-sustainable.

So, in the future, when the coordinator is completely shut off, it’s a completely decentralized network with a lot of different mesh networks that are interconnected, each having their own kind of tangled version. There’s this interoperability between them, and through that we achieve this dynamic scale of the network.

Are there any plans to integrate IOTA into some of the more popular cryptocurrency wallets?  I know there’s the IOTA native wallet, but there is the issue of users lacking the technical know-how to use it.
So, that is already in beta testing right now. There’s a UCL wallet that we’ve been developing for the last six months, and it’s a lot more user friendly. The ironic thing is about a year ago, I said,’I don’t want the IOTA foundation to develop wallets, because we should focus on protocols.’

That’s probably a bit negligent to the wallet itself. But now, we also employ all of those people that developed the UCL wallet, so now we are back to doing wallet development under the foundation. But it’s worth it, right? The good thing about that wallet is that it’s also on iOS, Android, and desktop. It’s definitely one of the best wallets out there.

There was a big surge in the price of IOTA following the announcement of the data marketplace. It’s since corrected a little bit, but still shows a pretty impressive gain. Where do you see the price of IOTA headed in the next 6 months?

I hate answering these questions because quite frankly, what I always says is, I don’t know what’s going to happen. Even now the cryptocurrency market is valued at $600 or $700 billion, or even more. Nobody ever expected that.

So when it comes to IOTA, I always say that IOTA has the potential to really be the backbone of this machine economy, which truly means that a trillion dollar market cap makes a lot of sense for IOTA. In my opinion, over the next year, we’ll definitely see some major consolidation of the projects that are actually legitimate, and actually delivering.

In my opinion, IOTA is definitely one of the top 3 by the end of the year 2018. I have to do another bet on that.

You know it’s actually a funny story, the last time I did a bet with somebody in the community, and I basically said,”If IOTA is at $10 billion by the end of the year, that I can tattoo you.” If I lost, I had to go naked skiing. Luckily I won, right?

Recently it came up that some of the founders of Ripple have been made into these super wealthy people overnight. I’m curious what kind of financial stake the founders of IOTA have in terms of tokens.
This is actually one of the major distinctions IOTA vs. all the other projects, right? So what Ripple did, what Ethereum and all those other projects did, is pre-allocate a portion of the tokens for themselves. That is why the Ripple founders became so wealthy because they pre-allocated like 30 or 35% for themselves, which in my opinion is just insane. Ethereum founders got 70%.

What we did with the IOTA token generation event, is we issued 100% of the tokens. So us founders, we had to buy into the ICO as well, just to get tokens, just to get a stake in the project. It’s the same with the IOTA foundation.

What we did with the IOTA foundation is we came to the community and said, ‘Hey, if you want to get a foundation, a non-profit foundation, that is behind the protocol and is pushing it, you need to donate tokens.’ That is why the community kept together, they donated tokens, about 5% of the total supply. That is how the IOTA foundation is funded right now. We ourselves also had to buy in, right?

So, in my opinion, IOTA is probably has one of the fairest distributions out there. Because us as founders bought in, that is also one of the main reasons, in my opinion, why Robert Bosch Venture Capital decided to invest in IOTA tokens.

Those huge, huge companies have a lot of weight behind their brand, and them buying tokens, and them buying tokens and making the founders billionaires leaves everyone with a sour taste in their mouth, right? It’s just a pump and dump scheme. That’s why IOTA is better than that, than other projects. The short answer is, I have enough incentive to work on this 24/7, and have no life.
