61  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Help recovering money from Bitcoin 1.0 for Android! on: July 11, 2011, 01:57:26 PM
Ok so I was messing around with Bitcoin 1.0 for Android and also Bitcoin Wallet, and trying to send coins back and forth just to test them out.  For the most part things worked well, except when I was a bit of an impatient dufus, and sent some btc back and forth within a block or two.  The Bitcoin 1.0 app didn't see the transaction, even after a few blocks (and block explorer confirmed that it was put into an earlier block), so I sent the remaining BTC to my Instawallet, quit the app and used Titanium backup to restore the data to a previous time.  I then opened it and tried to re-download the chain, but it's not showing the transaction (or the money sent out to Instawallet).  So now it thinks it has more BTC than the address actually has.  And I can't send out the amount I know it has because the transaction is invalid (since it tries to send too much back to itself).

So is there a way to have it re-scan the block chain?  Or can I somehow get my private key for that address?  Basically, is there any way to recover the btc for that address?  I feel like there should be since the program obviously has to have the private key, but I'm not at ALL tech-savvy enough to know what to look for or how to go about the recovery...
62  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / want: win32 binary for bitcointools and other stuff on: July 04, 2011, 02:13:46 AM
I am not at all a programmer but I want to do some of the cool stuff that most people here can do, like use my own block chain for a localhost block explorer and import/export private keys, and view bitcoindays destroyed.  Has anybody put bitcoin tools and all that other stuff into a executable program for Windows idiots like me who don't know anything other than how to open a program by double-clicking on it??....
63  Economy / Economics / Pump and Dump: Market Manipulation on: June 26, 2011, 01:04:48 PM
I was talking to a friend, and randomly he brought up "it's very easy to crash a fiat market and profit from the low value.  Remember that bitcoin crash a few weeks ago; one of my buddies was part responsible for that.  We did it with those Linden dollars from that game a while back."

Now every time I've seen a post similar to that quote, I've replied something similar to "you can't buy back for the value you lost in selling trying to drive the price down, so it's not possible to profit.  Sure you can crash it by just selling a ton, but you can't profit from it."  I was pretty sure this was true, but admittedly I have zero knowledge about this kind of thing.

Now here's the bigger kicker.  The guy who I was talking to is exceedingly smart, like genius level smart, and I believe him 100% when he says this.  So I would like to have this thread going in the direction of already going on the assumption that it's possible to do it and profit from it, and I want to ask HOW would you go about it?

I won't get to talk to this guy any more for at least a few days, but this has been driving me nuts.  How can you both drive the price down and still buy up at a profit?  Do you sell a large amount and scare the market and let fear get the better of them and then slowly buy up and end up with more simply because the initial panic you caused took life of its own?  I don't know how it would be possible.  But if my friend says it is, then it is.

How would you do it?

EDIT:  I'm not talking about the recent mtgox thing, I'm talking about the going from $30 to $12 a few weeks back.

I have a $150 Amazon gift card that I'd rather just use to by bitcoins with.  If anybody is willing to give me 9 bitcoins for it, please let me know!  I don't want to go too much lower, but I will consider offers for less.

I have an OTC rating:

http://bitcoin-otc.com/viewratingdetail.php?nick=luv2drnkbr

And you can match the PGP signature of this message with the PGP key used for that OTC account.  If you have a higher rating than I do, I'll send first, otherwise I must ask that you send first or use a ClearCoin charity escrow (i.e. btc goes to charity and NOT back to you if things don't work out).  Please post here or PM me if you're interested...

Thanks!

66  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Rollback!? on: June 20, 2011, 02:47:40 AM
I had no money on them, nor did I profit or loss form what happened (although there I am, right in the database!).  I still think the rollback is a terrible idea.  They should pay out of pocket to those who were hurt by this and let those who profited keep their profit.  It was no one's fault, and a lot of innocent people who made money in what they thought was a legitimate fashion are magicallytux going to lose that money.  That's not right.  It might be a huge hit, but it's the only way to salvage their reputation.
67  Economy / Trading Discussion / Moneybookers to BTC and back? on: June 10, 2011, 08:56:44 PM
Is there an automated way (or exchange that's trust-worthy) to turn Moneybookers into BTC and BTC into Moneybookers?  Right now it looks like my best option is MB>>VirWox>>SLL>>BTC, but that's both a hassle, requires me to open a Second Life account, and costs a lot in trading fees/hits.  I'd like to be able to be able to convert automatically between MB and BTC with less than a 5% value loss, like I can with USD and BTC via Dwolla and MtGox/TradeHill.  I don't mind if it takes time, time I have.  I just want to be able to auto-buy or auto-sell, or at least set a limit order to be filled, and then leave it and cash out the funds later after the order has been filled.  I don't want to have to continually find people on forums or OTC to trade with when I want to exchange between the two.  I'd like the process to be as automated as possible.  Anybody have any good ideas, or is VirWox and SLL the only way to go for me?

Yes, this is for online poker...
68  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / making a savings account wallet on: May 24, 2011, 06:35:23 AM
I want to make a "savings account" wallet to keep the bulk of my btc in, but I'm scared to do it, cause I'm not very tech-savvy and the cost of screwing up is huge..  So I want to ask:  I have the main client currently installed on Windows 7, and the data dir is in the %appdata%\Roaming\bitcoin folder.  (My first was installed using the binary installer.)  Can I just download the Windows zip file from bitcoin.org and place a completely new installation elsewhere on my computer?  Or will that mess things up having two installations of it?  Obviously, the "new" location is going to be a Truecrypt file container either on a thumb drive or in my Dropbox folder, but again, I'm worried about doing this because I don't want to mess things up.

Should I instead not even bother and just delete the wallet.dat file (after making a backup of course!) and replace it with a new one and run bitcoin with -rescan?  Then replace the original and just send my btc to an address on the newer wallet.  Would that work?

I feel like either of these would work just fine, but I'm not 100% sure and I don't want to try it, fuck up, and be screwed!

Now then, I have a second, completely unrelated couple of question.  The first one is, is there a way to verify an address is an actual address.  Like I want to verify that the address is real and exists without sending money to it.  Is that possible?  I saw somebody made a program that does that, and I'm curious how they went about it.

And finally, is there a patch/addon for Windows that can import/export addresses easily.  For if I wanted to use BitBills...

Thanks for the help guys!!!

I'm just looking to buy some USD Cake Poker money for my Bitcoins.  Only about $50 or so.  Please PM me or post here if interested.  I have a few OTC ratings:

Eventually I will want to do bigger trades, for Stars and Party Poker as well, but right now, I'm trying to start small and build up a network of people and trust around town here and on other forums.

Thanks guys!

70  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / What is anonyminity worth? on: April 28, 2011, 07:03:11 PM
So, as some of you may know, I got into Bitcoins because of the USA poker shutdown.  In the past few weeks, I've learned about them, and gotten an actual understanding of TOR, visited some of the darknet, etc.  And it's really bothered me.

A friend of mine and I were talking about Bitcoins.  The first point he brought up was that the poker shutdown had nothing to do with poker.  Poker sites ARE Bitcoins.  I buy coke from you, and we just go play some head's up poker and I lose the required payment to you.  Bam, Bitcoins.  THAT'S why they got shut down.  Certainly, they will eventually come after Bitcoins then.  The potential for criminal activity associated with them is just too great.

And that brings me to the second point my friend made.  Ya Tor was anonymous and all, but at least the bad guys only had a meeting place.  Now, with poker sites, and Bitcoins, they can MONETIZE their criminal activity.  There are drug stores and assassin's for hire, and child predators openly discussion the best strategies for kidnapping children.  And now criminals have a way to not only get together, but have a marketplace.  I saw stuff online that is going to stick with me my entire life.  (Can't be UNSEEN!!!!)

I don't know what to do or what to think.  Poker is my livelihood.  It's a game I love, and it's the only way I have to make money, and I'm not properly bankrolled to play live (in casinos) at high enough limits to live on.  Low limit online is my lifeblood.  But I don't want to be a part of helping the bad guys out there.  The cost of my being able to re-locate and be anonymous means that other people can too, and I don't know if I want them to be able to do that.

I'm in a bit of a crisis here.  I don't know what I'm going to do, but thanks for letting me vent here guys.

71  Economy / Marketplace / Buying/Selling Poker Site Money on: April 27, 2011, 10:26:52 AM
I don't know who runs the forums here, but I was hoping we might be able to get a child forum of the marketplace here for buying/selling poker site money with Bitcoins.  If you are an online poker player, please post in this thread, so we (or at least so I) can see how many people would be interested in this.  There's a few Liberty Reserve transfers going on in the official 2+2 player transfer thread, but not too many.  It'd be nice if we could build up a network for that here.
