1  Economy / Speculation / Bitcoin 250K in 2022? on: November 12, 2018, 04:07:51 PM
"Venture capital investor Tim Draper reaffirmed his prediction that the Bitcoin (BTC) price will reach $250,000 by 2022, during a panel discussion at the Web Summit summit conference Nov. 6."

https://cointelegraph.com/news/tim-draper-stands-by-his-bitcoin-price-prediction-of-250k-in-2022

“Yes. We are talking [...] about five percent market share to get to $250,000. That seems like a drop in a bucket and all we need to really do is make it so that Bitcoin can be used to buy Starbucks coffee, and all of a sudden the world just opens up and then they say ‘I’ve got this choice.’ [...] Do I want a currency that I can take from country to country [...] or do I want one that sticks me in one country or one geographic area and I can’t use it anywhere else?”

I think things like global virtual marketplaces and escrow systems coming out soon will drive universal crypto acceptance forward and make cryptocurrency a useful part of everyday life.

Arguments for or against his accuracy?
2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Apple Takes Down Crypto Podcast on: November 06, 2018, 10:33:52 PM
https://cointelegraph.com/news/apple-removes-crypto-podcast-reportedly-ranked-4-in-investing-from-us-itunes-store

“Last week we released a podcast discussing the ultimate argument for Bitcoin. It exploded & ranked #4 in US investing category before mysteriously being taken down by @Apple. We had no warning. We don’t know why. They took down our podcast, but they can’t take down Bitcoin!”

Fuck this censorship. Where did the freedom go?

What is the significance of such an act?
3  Economy / Economics / Which industries don't need blockchain? on: November 05, 2018, 04:06:53 PM
It appears as though every company is trying to integrate the use of blockchain technology.

https://www.blockchain-council.org/blockchain/top-10-companies-that-have-already-adopted-blockchain/

Some might have legitimate reasons, others just for the hype and hell of it.

Are there any industries that can't benefit from using blockchain technology in their business practices? Where it doesn't matter?
4  Economy / Economics / Cryptocurrencies and Europe's Economic Growth on: October 30, 2018, 12:24:39 PM
Europe's growth is stagnating because Italy is a dead weight.

https://www.bbc.com/news/business-46028714

"Economic growth in the 19 countries using the euro currency slowed by more than expected in the third quarter of the year, official figures indicate.

The bloc was not helped by the performance of Italy's economy, which registered no growth at all during the third quarter."

If countries issued their own cryptocurrencies and citizens functioned exclusively with its use, do you think this be a good thing for Europe's development?

Each country would have to carry its own weight, and one country's progress would not be hindered by another's bad economy.

5  Other / Politics & Society / Everyone wants to live like they're rich, but no one wants to work for it on: October 26, 2018, 10:10:46 AM
Ask anyone about their wildest dreams, and they will most likely tell you about buying objects and experiences that require financial freedom.

But, very few people are willing to "cross the jungle" to make these dreams a reality. The people who are willing to work to be rich are few and far between.

I like the way Ray Dalio puts it:

“Imagine that in order to have a great life you have to cross a dangerous jungle. You can stay safe where you are and have an ordinary life, or you can risk crossing the jungle to have a terrific life. How would you approach that choice? Take a moment to think about it because it is the sort of choice that, in one form or another, we all have to make.”

Most people are scared shitless of taking risks and breaking away from their illusions of safety, which is why they are now turning to technology to have access to the things they want for nothing.

Technology is making more and more incredible experiences accessible to everyone. You can now see court-side NBA games in VR. You can become a rockstar on social media if you know how to take pictures of your ass and have a smartphone.

Do you think technology will make people complacent because they'll be able to achieve whatever they want without having to work too hard?
6  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Crypto is the future of crowdfunding? on: October 18, 2018, 10:15:11 PM
Elon Musk is selling his "boring" flamethrowers for Bitcoin, Litecoin and Ethereum.

https://ethereumworldnews.com/elon-musk-sells-boring-flamethrower-for-bitcoin-ethereum-litecoin/

"This time, as spotted by The Next Web’s Hard Fork column, prospective flamethrower owners will be gaining access to Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Ethereum (ETH), and Litecoin (LTC) payments to put up money for the crowdfunding effort. Along with the four crypto assets, users will be able to use Apple Pay, Google Pay, along with traditional debit and credit payments through Paypal.

Seeing that the Boring Company’s crowdfunding participants are likely to to be forward-thinking, the addition of a cryptocurrency payment option was likely welcomed. Now, consumers from all across the globe can buy Boring Company’s “Not A Flamethrower” for $500 a pop, which is reportedly a lower figure than the startup’s $600 pre-sale price. This translates to approximately 0.078 BTC, 2.48 Ether, 1.13 BCH and 9.5 LTC, it just depends on what cryptocurrency you want to spend."

The fact that the company is trying to promote use of crypto is not only great for its acceptance, but more easily allows global access.

Thoughts as to whether this will initiate crowdfunding in crypto as the new norm?
7  Other / Beginners & Help / Exchanges or wallets as a means of storing BTC? on: October 17, 2018, 02:20:46 PM
Seems like there are a lot of arguments for using Bitcoin wallets.

https://coinsutra.com/best-bitcoin-wallets/

"But where are you keeping those bitcoins?

On Bitcoin exchanges like Binance, Bitfinex or hosted Bitcoin wallets such as Coinbase or CEX?

If that’s your answer, then you are putting the ownership of your bitcoins under serious risk!!"

Are there any safe exchanges? If not, which wallet do you personally recommend?
8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Alibaba patented a blockchain-powered method to stop illegal transactions on: October 05, 2018, 04:12:47 PM
https://cointelegraph.com/news/alibaba-files-patent-for-blockchain-system-that-allows-administrative-intervention

The patent seeks to develop a system for effective administrative supervision of all accounts in a blockchain network, although the scope of supervision will be limited, which means it will not restrict normal transactions in the blockchain network.

“The issuing account recorded in the various embodiments may be an account owned by a government agency or a trustful institution.”

Does this mean illegal transactions will now only be carried out by government agencies and "trustful institutions"?
9  Other / Off-topic / Who was your secondary father? on: October 05, 2018, 03:57:15 PM
We all have biological fathers who hopefully help nurture and love us from an early age, but we also have valuable secondary fathers throughout our lifetime that we find with a little bit of luck. We become an apprentice of sorts.

For me, it was a guy who I struck up a conversation with in a photocopy shop one day. I was 21, he was in his late 30's and had just returned from 7 years of world traveling and being a professional poker player. He had come back to open businesses in the capital city we were in as he wanted to settle down. We actually ended up opening a restaurant together even though I had zero experience in entrepreneurial endeavors.

The "apprenticeship" ended once we realized we couldn't work together, but I learned more from this guy about life, the world, and business over a summer than I ever had learned from my Dad or at school.

Who was yours?
10  Other / Politics & Society / A solution to surviving the AI Apocalypse on: October 03, 2018, 07:32:00 PM
If you've read Life 3.0 by Max Tegmark, you're aware that AI will be the "most important agent of change in the 21st century."

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2017/sep/22/life-30-max-tegmark-review

Harari's review places AI's fate on politics, and puts the blame on politician's technological ignorance for not trying to make long-term decisions regarding AI for our good.

Quote
Unfortunately, AI has so far hardly registered on our political radar. It has not been a major subject in any election campaign, and most parties, politicians and voters seem to have no opinion about it. This is largely because most people have only a very dim and limited understanding of machine learning, neural networks and artificial intelligence.

When science becomes politics, scientific ignorance becomes a recipe for political disaster.

One possible solution could be to have political positions created with the objective of planning the future of AI with engineers and scientists in office, instead of having the fate of our future lie in the hands of shareholders and people like Donald Trump.

Do you have a better idea?
11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin and Organized Crime on: October 03, 2018, 06:37:26 PM
A French security official was arrested last week on charges of selling state secrets on the dark web and accepting bitcoin in return.

https://www.coindesk.com/french-officials-allege-intelligence-agent-sold-state-secrets-for-bitcoin/

Quote
The agent had been working with members of an organized crime group, as well as specialists in economics, according to the report.

Has bitcoin become the preferred payment method of organized crime groups?
12  Economy / Trading Discussion / Stellarx the future of crypto exchange? on: October 01, 2018, 08:35:58 PM

What do you guys think of StellarX? Some have said that it's "too centralized."

https://news.bitcoin.com/a-review-of-the-new-stellarx-decentralized-exchange/

Quote
users retain sole custody of their funds, trades are executed against other users, and Stellarx has no access to funds. Throw in the ability to trade non-native crypto assets such as BTC and BCH, plus the option of making fiat currency deposits, and Stellarx starts to sound more like a centralized exchange than a bare bones DEX on a par with IDEX or Forkdelta. There are some caveats that come with trading non-native Stellar assets, which we’ll get to shortly, but straight off the bat, Stellarx is more feature-rich than any of its counterparts.

13  Other / Politics & Society / How should social media be regulated? on: September 28, 2018, 03:34:00 PM
A war has begun between those attempting to control fake news and the fake news providers.

https://futurism.com/social-media-congress-government-regulation/

Quote
"In today’s Congressional hearing, Sandberg said fake news sources and Facebook’s human and algorithmic moderators were locked in an “arms race.”

The problem is the "war" is seemingly impossible to win for the providers because they can't control the creation of fake accounts.

Lawmakers have no idea what to do apart from saying "the wild west of the internet is over."

What do you see as a viable solution?

14  Other / Politics & Society / How will VR influence society? on: September 20, 2018, 04:57:25 PM
VR's uses are growing outside of gaming. Walmart is putting 17,000 VR headsets in its stores for training.

https://www.theverge.com/2018/9/20/17882504/walmart-strivr-vr-oculus-go-headset-training-shipments

It's still the beginning, but if these types of things improve the implications are pretty huge. People can work from anywhere, hangout with people on opposite sides of the globe, not have to pay all that much to experience whatever they want. Only 5 more years and we can feel like we're going to the moon with Mr. Maezawa!

How do you think extremely high-quality immersive experiences will affect society as a whole?
15  Economy / Economics / Capitalism will make socialist ideals a reality on: September 04, 2018, 09:20:09 PM
Socialist countries may have happier citizens because their basic needs are covered and they wouldn't starve if they're out of the job, but you don't see much innovation coming out of these countries. Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon-these are products of capitalism. People are abundantly awarded for their work because don't have to pay astronomical income taxes in capitalist countries.

The way I see it, this process is now on its way to making socialist values a reality. "Equality of the people" is among the most prioritized.

The latest technology being driven by financial gain seems to be AI and VR/AR technology. This will be the great equalizer of the people. Things will become much cheaper to produce, and once-exclusive experiences will be available to everyone for very cheap. All things are on their way to becoming accessible to all people in the developed world, due to the inherently low cost of digital assets.

Thoughts on this?
