@gjhiggins, will probably tell us the cause of this, but I think nothing big happened, really.

https://bchain.info/SLM/blocks

Either a large amount of Slimcoin, previously not staking is now staking or someone has found a staking exploit. If it is the former, a natural event, then it will fade - the algos will ensure that. If it is the latter, an exploit, then it will unnaturally persist. All we can do is wait and see. (Please note, I didn't write the Slimcoin code, I merely wipe an oily rag over it now and again.)

Blocknet (a Pivx/Dash/PPcoin clone) was hacked in early Oct by someone who discovered a way to exploit the staking mechanism for personal gain. Apparently Pivx had discovered and quietly repaired its code some time before. Any chance Slimcoin could have this very staking code defect that recently became known to hackers?

Some background on the Blocknet hack and its resolution:

I understand trading can continue at Nova until end of February, but Slimcoin needs to look at options. Here are some possibilities:

- CryptoBridge - new dex exchange, just launched, nice interface, not much volume but low join fee for now
- CoinExchange.io - similar to Nova, some volume
- Blocknet DX - free listing, UI launching early as January, but requires OP_CHECKLOCKTIMEVERIFY (BIP 65)
- Komodo Barter Dex - requires some coding to make coin compatible, exchange launch date unknown
- Cryptopia - offering "Nova orphans" 1/2 price to list, but nonetheless expensive

Hi guys, I think that the spirit of Slimcoin must be this, be slim...

I also agree with this statement.

I noticed this coin is in maintenance at Nova Exchange.

Any chance of a Mac wallet being made available before the coin swap?

Well, just hitting M1 isn't going to be that easy. As I noted, Datacoin had all the right elements in place but few people were interested, even with the comparative luxury of 128Kb per tx. My sense is that the UX was too fragmentary to offer much appeal and, in consequence, failed to present a coherent narrative. The crux of the issue is metadata. Metadata tells you what's stored and how to access it. Without that metadata, all you can do is serially guess. The adaptation of ACME for Datacoin can use the RDF graph to carry the metadata, the blockchain carries the content. The adaptation of ACME for Slimcoin uses the RDF graph to carry both the metadata and the content, the blockchain carries only an index into the graph.

ACME is just a web app that marshals and presents data obtained by talking to the coin's JSON-API and Fuseki's SPARQL endpoint. The web app component can be relatively trivially re-implemented in a Javascript framework such as Angular or Vue.js and the functionality (i.e. ACME as you see it right now) embedded in a wallet tab. ACME in the wallet, with a configurable whitelist of publishers' addresses plus whatever metadata is retrievable to convey information about the author, title, topic, tags, need, I, go, on. Publishing is ... let's riff on this ... in ACME via a javascript-implemented interface, could even offer in-wallet blogging, hitting “post” submits the content for javascript processing - the content and associated metadata are rendered as RDF, signed and pushed up to the configured ACME SPARQL UPDATE endpoint to be stored in the graph - and the ACME publication API updated. You don't even have to make the inscription, that's done automatically. All you need as a Slimcoin user is an ACME API key and off you go. At some stage archiving and migration functionality can be added but it amounts to little more than hooking up buttons to a few SPARQL queries.

I guess torrent serving could also be made (an optional) part of the package, torrenting does hook into a substantial propagation community, although RDF definitely carries the day when it comes to the extent of the metadata and so can be readily “discovered”.

Which is why ACME will be a self-deploying, as-hands-off-as-I-can-make-it package. I suppose, with a following wind, this might be reasonably mistaken for the raw material for a masternode system an overlay network administered by hoomans instead of an algorithm. It'll have it's pros and cons but it might see some use.

Cheers

Graham

Where will the ACME blog posts get published to?  Is it also a reader?

Might the blog posts go a URL that Slimcoin will be hosting?

Great that most of my points are welcomed with enthusiasm.
I know that Segwit, and especially Lighting Network, will be hard to implement, and would require a hard-fork, but I think we can contact nova, and most miners are mining at v.0.5, from what I know (only some seeds, are on the old version v.0.3.2 and probably just because they don't have to change it).
If we have approval of nova (and mostly we will get it), rest will switch over, because they know, we can't have 2 networks (and second blockchain won't get to any exchange) - it's much easier, with our small, microscopic network, than with such big networks like ETH or BTC, and even then, they must hard fork chain or continue old chain, which was abducted.

About Android Wallet - can't we make it to listen tx's and view POB blocks as a POW blocks, outside of course on different server (because ? Is it completly different? I'm not a developer or even programmer, but I thought, about sth like that.
Also we could use something different than BitcoinJ implementation - I have stumbled across quite a few bitcoin wallets github android sources.

I can see how Segwit and Lighting Network might be nice to have, but I view Slimcoin more as I view Bitcoin: an investment-oriented currency rather than a transaction-oriented currency.

As such, above all, to me we need to make sure Slimcoin is solid and stable.

Slimcoin has three pillars. If one of them could use shoring up, as @d5000 suggests, it would seem well worth doing.

I think NAV has a lot going for it.

However, I think the graphic design of NAV looks dated and somewhat dorky.  To me it looks behind the times, but not in a hip retro way like Digibyte's logo.  I personally wouldn't wear anything with the NAV logo I can only imagine how uncool it must appear to teenagers.

In my opinion the whole presentation of the coin needs a top-down reworking by a top designer.

What is web2web?
I'm preparing a document about that. In short: It allows "decentrally hosted" and uncensorable websites. Publishers save a torrent hash of their content in the blockchain and upload the content as a Torrent. The readers must load a "bootstrap page" in their browser where they enter the Slimcoin address of the user who saved the content and it will search automatically for the torrent hash and display the content.

The cool things about it - and its advantages to similar approaches like Maidsafe, Steemit et al...

This sounds cool. Another similar such project is Shift.

The only people dumping rain are those who don't know its true value. Pity them. Smart people conserve rain and only sell a portion of their staking rewards.

In the SLIMcoin folder of Applications support is where I have been looking.  A "config" file doesn't exist in that folder until I create one.  I've installed 2 Mac wallets on 2 machines, and in both cases have had to create this file myself.

That's unexpected. What version is the client reporting and from where did you download the OS X binar[y|ies]?

Cheers

Graham

This post of yours shows where and when I got it for the 1st computer. I got from "slimcoinclub" website a link to the OS X version installed on the 2nd computer in July.   Anyway, both computers' wallets lack the config file.

After I've posted this, I'll fire up the Sierra VM, update the OS X app, similarly update the release binary and advertise it here.

The OS X GUI client in the 0.5 release section has now been updated.

Cheers

@dzarmush, good to know about that shortcut.  I have had full access to Library, and the Applications Support folder which contains the SLIMCoin folder.

So I'm a bit perplexed why my burn rewards got reduced by 90%.

That's the impression I got too, that mint-by-proof-of-stake rewards effectively replace mint-by-proof-of-burn rewards. But I haven't even tried to reference that perception against the reality of the C++ code.

It would helpful if there was an option to "turn off staking" on a wallet you want to use exclusively for burning.

Either -reservebalance=1000000000 as a command line option or reservebalance=1000000000 in the config file will effectively suspend staking (at least until the wallet's balance exceeds the amount specified). If you try that approach, I'd appreciate knowing whether the mint-by-proof-of-burn rewards resume their previous frequency and amount.

But a password-locked client allows mint-by-proof-of-burn whilst inhibiting mint-by-proof-of-stake. Useful to know.

Cheers

Graham

Graham, two things I noticed:
1) The command line doesn't work in the console.  I tried what you suggested, many variations of what you suggested, and many others.  The line simply isn't accepted in the console.
2)The Mac wallet version doesn't appear to create a "slimcoin.config" file.  Such a file doesn't exist anywhere in the folder.  So what I did was copy another coin's conf file over and renamed it.  Then I entered the line in the config file.  Result (12+ hours later): The mint-by-burn resumed at previous amount and frequency (at least for now).  Staking has stopped.

You wrote, "But a password-locked client allows mint-by-proof-of-burn whilst inhibiting mint-by-proof-of-stake." My locked Mac wallet didn't allow mint-by-proof-of-burn to happen.  I tried leaving it locked for a few days.

Why aren't more people selling?  The problem with selling even a drop of RAIN is you know darn well you're foregoing massive unrealized staking rewards. At these prices it feels like you're pouring RAIN down the drain.
17  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Slimcoin | First Proof of Burn currency | Test v0.5 release candidates on: August 19, 2017, 04:25:42 PM
Funny thing happened. I have a dedicated Slim Burn wallet on a computer I use only for this wallet (i.e. my staking Slim wallet does not reside on this computer).  Anyway, regular and healthy sized payouts of coins had been coming in thanks to burning.

After a couple weeks the staking started up (I suppose because my wallet was unlocked).  Staking rewards suddenly started appearing.

Exactly coinciding with the onset of staking rewards, 1) my computer slowed way down and 2) the burn payouts reduced to a trickle and became smaller in size. Though I was now getting small stake returns, this didn't compensate for the huge reduction in burn payouts.

I'm assuming I shouldn't have left the wallet unlocked on my dedicated "burning wallet/computer" because staking takes too much processor power, even for small amounts.

What I learned is not to mix burning and staking, and therefore, to always burn with the wallet locked.

The thing I can't explain is why the onset of staking rewards would reduce burn rewards.  Although the computer was slow, it was working enough to support several other non-Slimcoin wallets that continued to get staking rewards, and I understand burning isn't processor intensive.  So I'm a bit perplexed why my burn rewards got reduced by 90%.

Correction to what I wrote above: I can't burn unless I have unlocked the wallet.

However, as stated, after I have left the wallet unlocked for a few weeks, staking kicks in and slows down my computer.  And the computer slows down even though hardly any coins are being staked (just the new ones I received from doing burning).

It would helpful if there was an option to "turn off staking" on a wallet you want to use exclusively for burning. This way you could run other, non-slim wallets on the same computer, and the computer wouldn't have to be powerful. Lacking such an option, it looks to me that if I want to continue burning the coins I started burning, I'm going to have to devote a second computer to Slimcoin, simply because I can't turn off staking on the wallet I've dedicated to burning.

Saw this article today and thought of Slimcoin.

Eco-crypto: 8 coins focused primarily on the environment
https://cryptoinsider.com/eco-crypto-list-coins-focused-environment/

Seems to me Slimcoin should be on such a list.  What do you guys think?  Looking at the big picture, do you suppose a Slimcoin-based economy would be better for the environment than one based on a staking-only coin?

Modern communication format
Our goal is to build a social network focused on the cryptocurrency community. We will achieve this by introducing functions, taking into account the specifics of the cryptocurrency sphere.
Digital price as a base unit
For quick promotion we decided to set up a social network for the whole community. At the same time, the basic element will be the digital price. Functions that solve the tasks of the cryptocurrency community.
We like the concept of CryptoCurrency, what could be better?
Thereby, we will make a great effort to popularize DPEOPLE, offering tremendous services for the new communication format.
