101  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I am willing to get a mining rig. Opinions? on: May 18, 2013, 12:28:07 AM
Ask yourself why you want to get a mining rig? For fun? A hobby? Or to become rich? If it is for fun or hobby, then great! If it is to become rich, forget it!

You can get any cheap computer, cheap CPU/RAM. Don't need a big HDD or SDD. Most important is the GPU and a big enough power supply unit to run it. Definitely get AMD GPU, not Nvidia for mining.

As others said, go here and pick a GPU, but most people think a 7950 is a great choice for price/watt and price/hash ratio:
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

Now take the hash rate (NOT MHz speed) of the GPU you picked and put into calculator:
http://www.bitcoinx.com/profit/

For a 7950 with 550 MH/s, you will get about 0.0247 BTC/day at current network difficulty level. Keep in mind that as the network's whole hash rate increases, the difficulty will also increase. Meaning you will earn less and less BTC over time.

You could buy a second PSU (even a 500w one), and use the second PSU to run the 4th card. You will need to "jump" the PSU to turn it on:

104  Economy / Securities / Re: ASICMINER: Entering the Future of ASIC Mining by Inventing It on: May 17, 2013, 11:25:01 PM
Not considering bitcoin that was or is lost or destroyed, the max it could ever be per share would be 52.499875 BTC.

Haha you must be the one who has 1 AM-PT share asking at 52.499875 on BTC-TC website! Smiley

Wow AM-Pt prices are really climbing lately!

You really should read more on how Bitcoins work. All transactions are recorded in the network as blocks. So even if you do not have Multibit running, all "Deposits" are recorded in the block chain.

Multibit is just a wallet. Yes you can use its addresses with this pool. And no, it does not have to run all the time. You only need to run Multibit when you want to SEND coins. You can receive coins to that address any time, even when wallet is on a USB key in a safebox somewhere (aka "cold storage")

I'm confused by the prepay donation/perk.

If you read the perk, it states that "Immediate pay for bitcoin blocks. No waiting for 120 confirmations. No lost coins if the block is later orphaned. Note: does not apply to stale blocks."

Yet, if you read the Blocks (income) page, at the top it states "If the block is orphaned upon creation it will be listed as stale."

So ... one page says if a block is orphaned, it is listed as stale. The other page states that prepay does not apply to stale blocks yet no lost coins if block is orphaned?!? I'm going around in circles here ...

According to BTC-TC website:

The website has been under DDoS attack this evening. Sorry about the trouble.
Someone should tell the bad guys we're boring and harmless. Wink

111  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Is my Kill a Watt wrong? says pulling almost 1300W from 1200 W PSU? on: May 15, 2013, 06:20:52 PM
Only other thing I can think of then, is on your computer system, remove one GPU at a time. Unplug one graphics card so you are only running two, and see how many watts.

Then remove another GPU, so you are only running one, and see again.

Can also compare watts with using riser/molex, versus card plugged into motherboard directly and see.

I guess I would switch the two PSUs to see what happens. Since they are both 1200W, you shuold have no problems.

The one that is just running 2 cards and a fan ---> hook it up to your computer setup
The one hooked up to your computer --> connect to just the 2 cards and fan

Curious to see, but it could very well be a bad PSU.

лучше любить и потерять, чем никогда не любить вообще

But glad BTC prices have somewhat stabilized!

PS: For those who use CGMiner or BFGMiner, a guy in these forums wrote an awesome miner monitoring program. I use it to automatically monitor for sick GPUs, miner crashes, and I auto-restart my miners every 24 hours. This way, I might be provisioned a different pool server in case one goes wonky.

Testing the KAW with a known load (bulbs) that someone above suggested is a good idea.

Other questions: give us full details of your system hardware (motherboard, CPU, how many SSD/HDD, etc). Does the wattage also reflect a monitor that you have hooked up? I presume not since you are plugging the PSU straight into the KAW right?

Also, are you using the CPU for anything (CPU mining, etc)?

As others have said, you should not be pulling that much wattage with just 3x 7950s.

Are you sure you are reading WATTS and not VA (volt-amps) off your meter?

I have 3 7970, stock speeds, and I pull 875W according to my Kill-A-Watt with a Gold rated 1200W PSU.

Not sure if this article is true. I thought Dwolla only processes fiat, not actual BTC. So I'm confused by this article entitled, "Homeland Security cuts off Dwolla bitcoin transfers Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirms an "ongoing investigation" that led to Dwolla cutting off bitcoin transfers to Mt. Gox."
