1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Got hacked, lost 11 BTC on: November 26, 2023, 06:56:58 AM
Yesterday I lost 11 BTC from my Bitcoin Core 25.0 wallet.  The wallet wasn't open at the time.  I don't know how it happened. Lots of emotions right now.

I am sorry to hear that brother.  I lost $10,000 back in March 2021, nowhere near 11 BTC, and it was very painful.  Sad  It's not like I was a wealthy person. Just a regular working programmer.

I have learnt a lot since then, and the best I can do is say goodbye to it and keep on and stay optimistic.  If you still have your home, your employment, or retirement or whatever you have, your wife, etc, then it's a good idea to focus on what you have, it helped me to move forward and lessened the shock of it.

Soon it will just be a bad memory and nothing more.
2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is a “safe haven asset” on: November 26, 2023, 03:46:54 AM
Bitcoin is still a little risky, but perhaps not as risky as it was ten years ago, now that it has entered mainstream consciousness.

It's risky because it's harder for average people to understand compared to stocks, actual gold, etc, and is still volatile.

It's risky because it's too low compared to its peak, and it's not a great store of value either, because it has shown that it may not appreciate in value in future. It certainly hasn't compared to its all time highs in 2021.  It's like risky stocks in a way.  It's so easy to buy at ATH and get burnt.  Whether we like it or not, we are all affected in a way by the hype cycles and positive sentiment, and equally by low sentiment and panic selling.

If Bitcoin had a more stable upward trend and didn't crash by such huge percentages, then we could call it a safe haven asset and a good store of value, if I understand those terms correctly.

It would have to be Doge for me.
4  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: What to mine on over 1000 OVH servers? (CPU mining) on: January 27, 2020, 03:52:30 PM
I would try Monero.  Good luck!
5  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Anyone still mining with GPUs? on: January 27, 2020, 03:07:06 PM
Does anyone have suggestions for very modest GPUs which cannot fit ETH data (dags?) into them, i.e. they max out at 3GB or something like that; old GTX 1050 cards and so on.

Would be interested in thoughts on GPU mining anything that actually has a little value attached to it.  Or helping to mine new coins and keeping the networks going!
6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Best CPU Mineable Coins in 2019 and CPU Mining Guides [UPDATED!] on: January 27, 2020, 02:51:44 PM
OP, I think that you should recheck the topic to make sure it is still up-to-date and then change the year in the title to 2020. 2019 is old now and may make people avoid your topic.

Agree.

I think we should add Pascal Coin as a true CPU mineable coin.  Not worth much, and it takes hundreds of CPUs to get into the megahash/s, but if you enjoy mining then this one is good.  Regardless of if you get lambo or not (probably not!)

What we should post here, I think, is a frequently updated list of coins that you can mine with a CPU, and a list of GPU mineable coins, which are worth something (even if only pennies at most), listed on at least one exchange and can be swapped for other cryptos.  My 2 satoshis.  Grin

I appreciate the responses, I'll give it a shot.
8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / *** Complete Guide on How to Create a New Alt Coin – Update 2019 : genesis block on: January 15, 2020, 08:19:16 PM
Hi, thank you for the great guide.

I'm learning a lot, although I'm getting stuck on genesis block creation.  I changed the PoW to Keccak and added DGWv3 for retargeting, and it seems fine when I leave out the new PoW.

As I understand  it (or not?)  the genesis block can start with any type of hash, then a new algo can kick in and build on that to generate new blocks.  So I could I think generate a nice easy genesis block with good tools, then fire up the keccak miner and keep going.  I could be mistaken here.

I'm using nasa8x's Node genesis creation tool.
Code:
https://github.com/nasa8x/genesis-block

Code:
I have -z "A new keccak coin for 2020 16/Jan/2020"
-t 1579064710
-b 0x1d00ffff
-p "04678afdb0fe5548271967f1a67130b7105cd6a828e03909a67962e0ea1f61deb649f6bc3f4cef38c4f35504e51ec112de5c384df7ba0b8d578a4c702b6bf11d5f" (as for Bitcoin)

I run it:

Code:
james@instance-1:~/node-genesis-block$ node genesis.js -a keccak -t 1579064710 -z "A new keccak coin for 2020 16/Jan/2020" -b 0x1d00ffff -p "04678afdb0fe5548271967f1a67130b7105cd6a828e03909a67962e0ea1f61deb649f6bc3f4cef38c4f35504e51ec112de5c384df7ba0b8d578a4c702b6bf11d5f"

Outputs:

Code:
james@instance-1:~/node-genesis-block$ node genesis.js -a keccak -t 1579064710 -z "A new keccak coin for 2020 16/Jan/2020" -b 0x1d00ffff -p "04678afdb0fe5548271967f1a67130b7105cd6a828e03909a67962e0ea1f61deb649f6bc3f4cef38c4f35504e51ec112de5c384df7ba0b8d578a4c702b6bf11d5f"

A little puzzling at the moment, I thought these genesis block creations tools worked quite well.  Or at least, they used to; I used the same author's Genesis H0 tool before using the Node script.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what the problem might be?
Thank you good sirs!
9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Anyone still mining with GPUs? on: January 14, 2020, 09:22:15 AM
I've mined with a few ASICs before, which was nice and easy.  I find GPU mining a bit more difficult, for lack of coins and software.  For instance I can't modify an old Bitcoin release and use an old Bitcoin GPU miner to experiment with (or any coin that uses same proof of work).

GPUs should be quite flexible (still) if not profitable.  I'm fascinated with the subject and would like to learn a bit more, so after changing the proof of work in some version of Bitcoin, I could try and verify it with GPU mining software.

Maybe if there's a good keccak/something else GPU miner, I could rip out SHA256d and try that out.  Not sure what GPU mining software is flexible enough to handle a lot of algorithms though. Can anyone recommend a good GPU miner?

Thanks

I'm on board, here and there.  The antminerl3 workers are me  Smiley

I will be there 24/7 once I get the miners shipped to a data centre.
11  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTB] L3+ or S9 machines, maybe others, Australia on: August 17, 2019, 02:13:18 AM
Hi there,

I'm looking for some miners, L3+ or S9s or others.  Scrypt or SHA256d.  For scrypt I'm also looking at Moonlanders and Apollo (FutureBit), I will consider USB sticks like the GekkoScience NewPac SHA256d, for USB sticks I would prefer a suitable power board as well.

I'm looking to test new coins using Bitcoin and Litecoin PoW so none of these have to be profitable, I just need some hashpower.

I'm looking to reduce shipping costs so prefer if you have the machine(s) in Australia.

Can buy with BTC or instant bank transfer (Osko/PayID) for Australia.

Thanks
12  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][PRA] Practice Coin - Learn by Doing on: December 07, 2017, 12:15:59 PM
Hi, very good job, the truth is that I am learning a lot, but I have a doubt, what repositories and programs would have to install in linux to be able to put into practice what I learned?

Greetings and sorry for my English

Hi, are you still doing this?  If you are I would be happy to help with that stuff.  I got over that initial hurdle.  The biggest difficulty I had was what to search for on Google and then mining after finding a genesis block.  I had connection issues with my nodes.  I would recommend going from abc coin and using shakezula's guides.  You will need the scrypt guide as well as the Bitcoin cloning guide if you want to clone an earlier Bitcoin, because it goes into the details of commands for P2P things.  I banged my head on the wall for a while until I went back to the guide and remembered "-connect".  Sometimes it's the smaller things that are a trip up!

Anyway, have you got most of your Linux environment set up?  You will need two machines to connect.  I wouldn't recommend having one inside a virtual machine to begin with, like Linux in VirtualBox.  But you can do it over a couple of old laptops or desktops on the local net instead of using a VPS as a more permanent seed node.  The starting difficulty is a very high number to begin with, making it easy to generate new coins for an altcoin project and see it in action.

Good luck.
13  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Smallchange project (SMC) starting with mining from new genesis block on: December 07, 2017, 09:29:13 AM
Okay, figured it out Smiley

If anyone else has the same problem, I'll be happy to help out.

Once the genesis block is mined and the block hash < target works out, that is the proof of work is done, the coinbase transaction is done and you reward yourself with coins.  The software adds the info to your wallet.  When you keep mining and confirming blocks, you can send coins between your nodes and watch them get confirmed and the coin maturity come about after X number of more blocks.

You don't really need a VPS as a node, you can use machines on your local network, and get them to connect to each other.  Prerequisite would be understanding any firewall rules you have configured.  Open up your P2P port for the local network.
14  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / OzCoin - a research and education coin project based on Bitcoin on: December 07, 2017, 08:49:07 AM
Ever tried to get an altcoin going?

So after trying to understand the latest source of Bitcoin and Litecoin etc., and finding it really difficult, and taking the Cryptocurrency course and much more, I used shakezula's guides on cloning Bitcoin and the scrypt guide and got OzCoin up and running.  It's crap of course, but worth the effort.  Frustrating even with Shakezula's excellent work when I messed stuff up, or when I was going for too long like I had and forgot simple things like port forwarding, VPS rules for OzCoin's port (1337) and forgetting -connect, lol, and wondering why there were no connections.  Phew.

So here was the initial post, in the wrong place under altcoin mining. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2539709.0

Cheers
15  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / [ANN] OzCoin - Australia! - a research and educational 'coin' on: December 07, 2017, 08:36:52 AM
Edit: sorry, this should have been posted to announcements or discussion.  What happens when you've been awake for 30 hours or so ...

Hello,

For all those frustrated and trying to get their altcoins going, and especially to my Strayan friends, OzCoin is up and running with a big thanks to shakezula's excellent guides on early Bitcoin and Litecoin work, and the scrypt guide which was essential along with the cloning Bitcoin guide.

So I have a node on a VPS and a GUI version on a laptop both mining and validating the chain and stuff.  I started it with the story about the ACCC investigating Google and Facebook's impact on news media and put that in my pszTimestamp.  Lots more Googling when it failed at first because the timestamp was too long initially Smiley

Here's a screenshot I took earlier on a laptop:

http://13.75.144.108/screenshot.png  (going away soon if it gets too many hits...)

If you're trying to get up and running, or want the source to play with, I'll stick it on github.  Note this is a research and educational project so please don't mine the hell out of it to begin with Smiley  Can't take it seriously with port number 1337... it will change later.  And it's definitely not going out there as a real coin project.  Gives me some time to wrap my head around it all and merge in security and feature patches and get binaries happening for different platforms, make it compile with MingW or Cygwin and get a simple Android wallet going, things like that, and a nifty block explorer.

So, if you like creating coins and want to get in touch with others who have struggled past the initial hurdles please get in touch.  We could help each other out and keep documenting changes and merging in patches and running software tests and getting testnets up and humming.

Most of all have fun.  This has been super frustrating but worth every effort Smiley
16  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Smallchange project (SMC) starting with mining from new genesis block on: December 05, 2017, 04:08:36 PM
Hello all,

especially to fans of building alt-coin projects and trying to get research or educational coins up and running.

After finding the genesis block, a new one for SMC, how can mining be started?  Is it necessary to start some transactions (how?) and get them in the pool, then work on them to solve a block and mine new SMC coins?  This is starting a new SMC blockchain.  I've googled for a few days and I can't figure it out.

Has anyone used it recently?

Thanks!
17  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to start altcoin development? on: July 28, 2017, 03:11:29 AM
If you're wanting some more information on making Litecoin clones these tutorials might be of use to you https://www.youtube.com/user/whatthefluxable. But I'm more trying to build it from scratch to try and understand it as much as I can, not just make a clone of an existing coin.

I do feel like there isn't enough information out there to help developers get over the initial hurdle for starting blockchain development. Or at least it's not all easily accessible.

Feel free to message me if you get much further with this. I'd like to get in contact with some other new developers and maybe share what resources they're using.

Yes, my motivation for creating a coin is to step through the details of how Bitcoin is implemented, and find the main differences between Bitcoin and other coins.  I don't see the point in creating a coin other than to learn about the implementation details of Bitcoin and the bigger alt-coins.

There isn't really enough information out there.  Even Hal Finney had quite a few questions for Satoshi on the implementation details.  So nobody should feel bad - if Hal Finney was puzzled at first, we're all in good company. Smiley  It's just that Satoshi did things in a different way; he/she/they tried to implement a system that solved some problems and even appeared to predict the future to a certain extent.  Once Satoshi was satisfied these main problems were solved in the software, Satoshi sent some emails then put the paper out there.

The software is quirky and full of bizarre details like mixing little and big endian integers, var ints when the version header might have sufficed, the use of a certain elliptic curve for performance reasons then an apparent "fuck it..."  There's a lot more, although that just ads to the fascination for some; for others they recognize that real software is full of trade-offs, hacks, legacy cruft and compromises.

I'm still working on building my way up from earlier reference implementations, as well as Googling for all the rest.  I have 0.2.0, the first version that supported Linux (Ubuntu to be more precise) and compiling and stepping through it.  I've also changed the genesis block a couple of times and tried mining.  I still have a fair way to go I think.  The breadth of knowledge and experience needed to understand Bitcoin is astonishing.  I'm sticking to technical details.  One could spend a life time studying computer science, cryptography, economics, law, government, the history of money, finance, etc., and still not achieve the astonishing level of insight that Satoshi and others possessed.

We should definitely collaborate to try and achieve a satisfactory understanding and invite others on board, whatever their experience or expertise.
18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to make money in cryptocurrencies? on: July 26, 2017, 11:30:40 PM
Ok, so I have £1500.

I am 17 years old. I want to make money...
I have three weeks of summer left to do it.
I know that buying and holding Bitcoin is almost guaranteed to make me money in the long run but, I need more money than I already have.

How do I get 10x returns in three weeks?
Altcoins? ICO? Buy a Bitcoin ATM? Create a cryptocurrency myself?

Thanks

Some of the advice here is good.

Making a 10x return is highly unlikely in a short time frame.  Bank it, buy some BTC, whatever you do, play it safe and don't get involved too much just yet.  You still have college/uni/work and all the other stuff young people have to do.

If you're determined to make a mark somewhere, spend some time learning more about it and doing some research. Separate fact from fiction and if anything seems too good to be true, it probably is. Be careful and don't allow anyone to sway your better judgement with unknowns and speculation.

Good luck!

I was wondering if there are any platforms that I could use.

If not, do I have to code one for myself? My coding knowledge isn't too great - It would take me about three days using javascript and HTML.

I would really appreciate it if somebody could give me some help or possibly even code one for me  Grin.
Or could anyone give me the code for a landing page that they have already created (I'll edit it of course so it doesn't look exactly the same)

Thanks

I'd be happy to help.  What do you need for the site?

I've been the Mac Daddy Pimp Ice-Web-T OG of Web sites since 1994.

PM me details, I also need root access to your server.
