861  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [VOTE] ISO Currency Code bringing Bitcoin into the mainstream financial markets on: May 09, 2013, 06:34:29 PM
I like this idea.

Regarding the 100 satoshis... Ok, I suppose that makes sense.  It'll be a while before we reach parity with the dollar at that level though!   Cheesy
862  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin needs to be simplified for the stupid. on: May 09, 2013, 03:03:13 PM
I'll just say that I am a decent technical writer, and have written many internal software user guides for various companies I have worked for.  I'm also a writer for Bitcoin Magazine.  I would be willing to write a step-by-step user guide on Bitcoin-QT if a bounty is put together.  I would want to cover every feature that the Bitcoin-QT client is capable of, which I am certain includes features I haven't even used yet, and gear it towards the layman.
863  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Sending coins to trash -- probably the biggest threat to bitcoin on: May 08, 2013, 11:05:32 PM

Has anyone here already addressed one very important issue brought up by OP in the Sweft's Law discussion? I'm referring to the claim that "rogue miners can mine the network, charging tx fees and sending the coins to the trash"? Is there a way to prevent this? Because if it can't be done, then BTC won't make it as a currency.
1) Anyone doing this would have to be wasting a lot of money doing so.
2) Even if half of all Bitcoins are destroyed/sent to the trash, it doesn't change the usability or functionality of Bitcoin.  You could only have 1 Bitcoin left, and it's still infinitely divisible, so everyone in the world could still use Bitcoin.
864  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to upload wallet.dat file? HELP ASAP on: May 08, 2013, 10:21:20 PM
You would have to use pywallet to extract the private keys, then import those private keys to blockchain.info.  I do not believe that blockchain.info has the capability to read/store an entire wallet file.

^^This is bad advice.^^

You most certainly can upload your wallet directly to blockchain.info and create a new blockchain.info wallet with it.  If you already have a blockchain.info wallet that you want to keep, you can either have two of them, or you can send the bitcoins from one wallet to the other, and abandon the empty one.

Here's the link to create a blockchain.info wallet from a Bitcoin-Qt wallet:

https://blockchain.info/wallet/import-wallet
Oooh, nice, I didn't realize they had added that feature!  Learn something new every day...
865  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: BTC accepted for Solar + Mining? on: May 08, 2013, 09:00:50 PM
I'll just put this here:

Mining on solar panels makes no more sense than buying solar panels and not mining - you get the same net benefit either way.

That said, I think it would be awesome if your company accepted BTC for solar panel systems/kits!  The more options available to spend BTC, the more it pushes BTC forward.
866  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin needs to be simplified for the stupid. on: May 08, 2013, 08:47:58 PM
I think we need some layers over Bitcoin where you could sent BTC to addresses like anna@bitcoin.com. It would be a huge step towards making it mainstream among regular folks. I also think that the first person who runs a company which pulls this of will become a millionaire.

Millionaire? Try multi-billionaire.
A company already did that.  Can't remember who.  But effectively, they'd send an email notification to the person who received the Bitcoins, which the person could then use to claim them.

Op: How long were you running a node before you actually were able to get your hands on bitcoins?

I had 0.01 bitcoin (received from a friend) for a good 2-3 weeks in my wallet before I actually traded USD for bitcoins on an exchange.

It's different for everybody but most of those nodes are probably popping up out of curiousity for now.
I actually got the blockchain downloaded and started mining 3 BTC/day on my one GPU the day I found out about Bitcoin.  Wink

Man...

I still haven't been able to figure out how to mine in the first place. Not that it would be of any use right now anyway. My computer can barely run Skyrim.  Cheesy

Did you make a fortune?
I would have if I had held on to them all.  I sold or spent almost every Bitcoin I've mined though, many at low prices ($3-$6 during the 2011 climb, and more at $5 or less after the crash).  And that amazing mining period where difficulty was less than 100,000 only lasted for a short time.  It didn't take long before it was over 1M.  At my peak, once I received the 6 new GPU's I ordered a couple days after finding out about Bitcoin, I was generating 8 BTC/day.

I think I've mined somewhere around 600 BTC, but I only have 10 BTC to show for it today.  Hindsight is 20/20, and especially back then, I wouldn't have believed you if you told me Bitcoin was ever going to go back above $31.  But part of the reason I sold is the financial difficulties that I was going through at the time, with our first child, new house, work life changes, etc.  Our annual household income has actually gone down every year for the past 5 years, and the only reason we've been able to pull out of it ahead is because of Bitcoin.  I still made around $5000 off that initial $1100 investment into GPUs/computers, and I'm set to be reaping the proceeds from additional investments as soon as BFL starts delivering singles.

I am was a weak hand.  Now that we're on a more financially stable ground, I'll be very likely holding the vast majority of Bitcoins I mine in the future.

Is it just venting into your attic? You may want to add another fan to vent it all out of the attic. But, nice job!  Grin
Na, it'll vent out on its own.  In fact, it'll probably be cooler up in his attic since he'll actually have air flowing through it back outside.  If you've been in a fanless attic in the heat of summer, you'll know what I mean...
871  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin needs to be simplified for the stupid. on: May 08, 2013, 07:02:57 PM
Grandma will never be able to use Bitcoin directly.  However, she may be able to use services built on top of Bitcoin that are purposefully built to be extremely easy to use and extremely secure/forgiving.  For instance, those services might only pay verified vendors, so that grandma can't accidentally pay a scammer.

Now, if you're saying that grandma can't even use a computer (which, let's face it, if she can't use email, she can't use a computer), then you'd be looking at physical services built on top of Bitcoin that are easy to use and extremely secure/forgiving.  But this will be a long time coming, because it would cost hundreds of millions of dollars in infrastructure to build and maintain.  You'd be looking at the VISA equivalent of Bitcoin.  And actually, it might look a lot like the current VISA system, with swipable cards with pin numbers or signatures required, and the payment network on the hook for cases of merchant fraud.  Problem is, the payment network wouldn't have any way to reverse the fraud in the case of Bitcoin, so they might not actually send payment until the merchant does some basic verifications with them, etc.

Anyway, just some thoughts.  Building a better Bitcoin isn't the problem, it's just a matter of building a system on top of Bitcoin that can do what is necessary to make Bitcoin accessible to grandma.  Or altering the existing system to be compatible with Bitcoin (which might honestly be much easier, if Bitcoin is looked at just like cash from a banking perspective).

Doesn't seem like many people are playing here anymore.  When it started, you'd see 8-16 draws per block, now, it seems sightings of even 1 draw per block are few and far between.

I wish I had 1400 BTC, I would so take you up on that offer.

It is.  It is glorious.  I love it.   Grin
876  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Just got my Physical Bitcoin from SgtSpike! on: May 07, 2013, 11:22:48 PM
how much was it?
We agreed on 5 BTC.  The coin is graded MS63 by ANACS.

Anyone got a CSI zoom photoshop filter to show the private key?

If you look closely around the rim you can see spots. What is that?
Just dirt/grime by the looks of it when I had it, but I didn't dare clean it.  It's still in excellent shape though, but that's why it's not graded an MS70.  Wink

EDIT:  BTW DM90, that's a very nicely detailed picture.  How did you take it?
877  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] BFL SC Single 60GH/s first-day preorder - 200 BTC on: May 07, 2013, 11:21:33 PM
SgtSpike has fallen to selling his units. What a travesty!

I will give you 5 btc.
Only if the price is right!  Why is it a travesty?
Well you waited this long, and now you gave up?

Why?

I can buy 20 Singles for 200BTC right now. (well when the market rate is a slightly better than it is now)

So I can hash at....1TH/s if I wait a few months. Or I can pay 200BTC right now, and get my Single through you....in a few months @ 60Gh/s.

Tell me why buying it from you is a good choice? Keep in mind not to make the argument that it will take an eternity to get an Single ordered today as it will may be a self defeating argument. Or that the difficulty will sky rocket by then making each coin much harder to produce as the days wear on. (Again, a self defeating argument)

Alright I will increase my offer...6 BTC.
I'm not giving up.  Notice that my offer doesn't state that the buyer has to pay me in the event that BFL doesn't deliver - in that case, the buyer would get their Bitcoins back from escrow.

I am simply making a calculated decision, based on the fact that I believe an SC Single ordered now would start mining before this one would generate 200 BTC.  Based on the fact that I've had two offers @ 200 BTC, I think it's safe to say some others believe the opposite.

879  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: I don't get the FPGAs selling on ebay on: May 07, 2013, 08:05:05 PM
I see the BFL singles, and some others going for $1200-1600 each. How can this EVER come even close to breaking even much less making any money?

Am I missing something?

Thanks!
Buyer buys FPGA single.
Buyer mines on FPGA single for two weeks.
Buyer files dispute that item is "not as described", offers to ship it back.
Seller is forced to accept a refund once the item is shipped back.
Buyer just made $50.

Seems like a lot of work for $50 though.
