1  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Feedback on small venting strategy? on: December 04, 2017, 10:23:38 PM
Thanks for the gut check!

Sure am getting lots of heat out of these units.  Soon we'll be measuring heat in BTCs instead of BTUs! Wink

3  Bitcoin / Mining support / Feedback on small venting strategy? on: December 04, 2017, 09:24:54 PM
Hi guys.

First - thanks for your input; I imagine many have traveled this road, and probably on a grander scale!

I've been mining for awhile, started with butterflies, moved into R-Box unit and finally mined enough to buy an S9.  With one S9, I could vent directly into the same room, and the room would never exceed 22-23 degrees celsius.  I pulled the trigger on a second S9, and it quickly got too warm, hovering closer to 27/28 degrees celsius with the HRV running at full capacity with an intake in the same room.  So began the march toward ventilation.

I bought:

S9 Exhaust --> 4 inch Wyes --> 6 Inch increaser --> 6 inch duct --> Inline duct fan -->  6 inch duct --> Silencer --> Merge with duct that leads to upper floor in the home (which was typically cold in the winter)

After running for about 45 minutes, the temps on the hash boards seemed decent, running between 72 and 80 deg.  The ambient temp (intake) was at 22 celsius.  There was this smell developing though, where it smelled like hot plastic.  Quick trip back downstairs, disconnected everything, and the fan was responsible.  Checking the engineering specs, it has a max tolerance of 60 Celsius.  I removed it from the equation, and am now doing:

S9 Exhaust --> 4 inch Wyes --> 6 Inch increaser --> 6 inch duct --> Silencer --> Merge with duct that leads to upper floor in the home

I am still getting a good amount of heat, and without the fan, the board temps are between 75 and 86. Fan speed around 6,100.

I'm wondering:

  • These board temps are standard?  Haven't much paid attention to them in the past
  • Anyone run a similar setup for a fair duration?  Worried now, that the little dryer hose connectors are messing with 'something (just being paranoid)

Would lowering frequency allow me to reduce temp?

Thank you -- admittedly a hobbyist!  Love BTC and what it stands for.

Just an update - top marks for bitmainwarranty.com.  I asked the question, and they're making it right by shipping back the proper board.  No fuss at all.

This 2.4 is as performant as the 3.9; and is compatible with the S9?  I can't find references on the boards anywhere; am reluctant to just 'plug it in' and do damage.
7  Bitcoin / Hardware / bitmainwarranty.com replaced a v3.9 board with a v2.4. Will this work? on: August 25, 2017, 01:59:15 AM
Hey guys.

I had a broken board on a brand new 13.5 Antminer S9.  Shipping to China was $265 bucks, so Bitmain recommended I give the people at bitmainwarranty.com a try.

Through their support ticket system, they told me the could repair my board for $175, which I paid.

When the new board got here, I noticed that it wasn't of the same type.  I had sent them a v3.9, and they shipped back a v2.4.  It doesn't look near the same, but I don't know much on the subject.

Help appreciated.
8  Bitcoin / Pools / BitMinter - shifts that don't pay? on: August 09, 2017, 01:22:41 PM
Hi!

Trying to understand BitMinter's shift system.  I've been blinding mining for a few years, but am trying to get a better understanding now that I've gone from a small hobby rig (few r-boxes), to a bigger hobby rig (S9).

What does a bunch of zero-payout shifts mean?

Simply that no coins were found for this duration?

What about the income attributable to mining transaction fees?

Thanks for your knowledge!

10  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Brand New S9, only 2 of 3 hashboards have a red light on: August 08, 2017, 01:48:35 AM
Hey!

Here's how it unfolded:

- I'm in Canada, and Bitmain insisted I ship the whole unit back to them for warranty repairs.  They acknowledged the US repair shop, but said it just had to go to them for warranty.  Canada was considered international (rough).

- It costs $260 to ship to Hong Kong (ouch), and if it's anything like the original purchase, I'd be paying another $260 when it gets back.

They told me I could ship it to Bitmainwarranty.com in Denver, CO -- but on my own dime; the repair wouldn't be done under warranty.

When I called bitmainwarranty - they were extremely nice.  They kinda laughed at the 'ship the whole unit' statement; and invited me to simply send the burnt board.  It cost me $25 to ship, and he suspects he can fix it for next to nothing.

Shipping the board leaves me with ~9thps, so I went that route. I'll update when I get more details on the board and its repair.  If it costs less than 500 or so to fix, I'm coming out ahead IMO.
11  Bitcoin / Hardware / Brand New S9, only 2 of 3 hashboards have a red light on: July 30, 2017, 04:02:50 AM
I'm also hashing at 2/3rds the expected rate.  I imagine I'm looking at a dead board.  This something I can fix/debug?

Bitmain warranties this kind of stuff?

Thanks!
Alex

Sorry, next question - would this unit work? It says it's rated 208V

Stupid question; The Bitmain PSU I have (https://shop.bitmain.com/productDetail.htm?pid=00020170524082422857fCitO7c806A2).  Would both a C13 or C15 fit?  These two female plug types are interchangeable?
14  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Wiring for Antminer S9 in Canada on: July 17, 2017, 05:09:17 PM
Thanks for the replies everyone!

I've got an electrician coming down - I'm going to do a 240V circuit w/30amp breaker and a Nema L6-30P twist-lock with the matching 6-30 to C15 cable.  Here goes!

Thanks for the help!

It's time-of-use billing for electricity here; is there an API or control system to make the unit sleep during peak hours?

15  Bitcoin / Hardware / Wiring for Antminer S9 in Canada on: July 14, 2017, 02:59:32 AM
Hi Everyone.

Thanks for answering a noob question!  I've been mining with little R-Boxes for a while (6 of them) and had made enough BTC to buy an S9 straight from Bitmain.  When I got it in the mail, I opened it up, plugged in its PSU - but it wasn't enough to power the unit.  Only then did I read the instructions, which wrote:

"The AntMiner S9 total current is 20A, but most home outlet power sockets supply only 10A."

Breaker and Wiring?
I have lots of spare room on my panel, so I was going to get an electrician to come down and install the adequate line -- what do I ask for?  30A breaker on 220 with 8 gauge wire?  That ought to be good enough for one miner right?

Power Cable?
Lastly, the Bitmain PSU has a C13 looking plug, but should I be looking for a C15/16?  Anyone have a good line on a NEMA to C15/16 cable?  What have you used?  I found this link, which seems to be "right"?  http://www.lockingpowercords.com/products/987-l6-30-c15.aspx

I've read a few horror stories; are these things a fire hazard?

Thanks for your advice!
