but everything is inferior to having control of your own private keys and putting your coins in offline cold storage.

But it's best to keep your coins on your own wallet on your own machine so you have complete control over them.
electrum is light weight I just run core because i have the hard drive space.

The best bet is to go to the email provider and get them to recover the account to you.
I doubt btc-e will give you access with out it. they can't just lower there users security like that.
