Let me congratulate you on work well done!   Cheesy
Been using it happily for quite a while to monitor my semi-hot PoS wallets remotely doing their PoSing.

Since upgrading my proxy node on my Raspberry Pi to v0.4.4.6-nvc-12-gbafc8da-beta, I'm observing a behaviour I haven't seen before in debug.log:
getblocks 67859 to 00000000000000000000 limit 500
getblocks stopping at limit 68358 d537d885299074f8efb1
getblocks 68359 to 00000000000000000000 limit 500
getblocks stopping at limit 68858 000000000007acf2049f
getblocks 68859 to 00000000000000000000 limit 500
getblocks stopping at limit 69358 b0d680ecdd0e4d6984cc
getblocks 65859 to 1d8fafa34a7f7d29684f limit 500
getblocks stopping at limit 66358 e7154a17ebfe38e3797a
getblocks 66359 to 00000000000000000000 limit 500
getblocks stopping at limit 66858 000000000030a21c6998
getblocks 66859 to 00000000000000000000 limit 500
getblocks stopping at limit 67358 e247514923cb9454c4af
getblocks 67359 to 00000000000000000000 limit 500
getblocks stopping at limit 67858 00000000006d77fcb0ab
getblocks 67859 to 00000000000000000000 limit 500
getblocks stopping at limit 68358 d537d885299074f8efb1
getblocks 68359 to 00000000000000000000 limit 500
getblocks stopping at limit 68858 000000000007acf2049f
getblocks 68859 to 00000000000000000000 limit 500
getblocks stopping at limit 69358 b0d680ecdd0e4d6984cc
You can see the getblocks looping, i.e. going up to 68859, then starting again at 65859. Since unfortunately it doesn't log IP I cannot see if it's always the same node requesting this.
When stopping & restarting the node , it stays normal for several days until I start seeing this again(happened about 5 times so far). Otherwise, the node seems to remain functional, i.e. forwarding blocks etc.
Anyone else seen this behaviour?

Hi Balthazar,

I like your support and the new features being added and would like to support that, but I see you don't have a Novacoin address in your footer (shame on you!! :-) ), so I'll wait and see whether you add one..

Kind regards
Mike

P.S.: Nice giving us the deterministic wallet feature - will there be included a feature into the client to print it out in a nice, good-readable way with basic instructions on what it is, plus a GUIey way to add it to the wallet? With more non-techy people entering into crypto, I think we need more user-friendliness than just a Text console somewhere in the menus.
26  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [GLB]Globe – Revolutionary crypto currency - Fast , Backed, Stable on: December 29, 2013, 10:35:02 PM
Well, I'm not yet an expert on this as I just recently read about it at
http://www.coindesk.com/bitgo-safe-aims-secure-bitcoin-wallets-multi-signature-transactions/

How about using such a multi-signature method? That way, a "consortium" can decide on the funds and needs a n-out-of-m majority for signing the transaction.

Also: Look at how Freicoin is doing on their end, they have the same problem to solve with their key where the fees go to.
About concerns of the dev using the coins other than expected: Well, whatever is decided, he has the private key of the address where they go to NOW anyways... Whomever he hands the key to, he might have a copy. Which does not mean I mistrust him, just stating the fact.
Could be solved by releasing a new code which sends the fee to another address, moving funds to that new address, and have that new address generated by a to-be-nominated comittee. Not sure if a multi-signature key would require a new address anyway (assuming that globe supports this feature or can be made to support it, not sure of the requirements here).

Kind regards
Mike

There we go.  Finding when people do shitty things is easy.  Finding when people actually clear things up is difficult.

I appreciate the help.  Thank you.

I'm still curious as to a trading strategy which is beneficial for placing hundreds of automatic buy orders for 0.1 when the fee is so high if it is not BTC-e manipulating the market.

Again, thanks for clearing up the issue regarding the 100k pre-mined novacoins.

I cannot answer what's the benefit of this trading strategy, but I've seen it quite frequently, often on cryptsy and mcxnow. Lots of These mini orders, and in many cases also twin mini orders (two orders right next to each other with the same tiny amount. Someone mentioned this is a trading bot called "jew bot" but I couldn't find anything on that.
My assumption is that These mini orders placed between larger orders are possibly supposed to "hide" an upcoming wall for the "Manual" Trader. But that's just a theory.
So sorry that I cannot provide a definitive answer other than that I frequently see this type of orders, it's not specific to NVC.

Kind regards
Mike

Awww, somebody is envious about NVC's recent rise. Gross put on ignore.  Grin

Well, there must be something to it, or else he wouldn't have used red, bold & caps.
People don't do that for no reason, so it sure is legit!

Hi,

is there some way to create a printable passphrase-protected private key like you can do on http://www.bit2factor.org/ for Bitcoin private keys?
That site refuses a novacoin private key as Input, not sure if just patching out a check would work but would prefer having a better solution than that :-)
Then I could have it printed on, say, a coffee mug that I Keep in the Office in case my flat burns down to the grounds :-)

Thanks!
Mike
33  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Vircurex are legit ? on: November 09, 2013, 02:32:26 PM
i have found someone saying bad about thier service so i wonder if this is real .

any other fast withdraw deposit site with a lot alt coin to trade ?
What altcoins are you talking about?
For the Major ones, btc-e is for me the way to go, and for the widest Sortiment in coins dealed, it's probably cryptsy, although they often take their while with email confirmation.
coinex.pw offers many coins not listed yet anywhere else, so if that's the way you wanna go - withdrawals and deposits are almost instant there.

Kind regards

34  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Solution to a 51% attack? on: November 03, 2013, 05:22:41 PM
Hi,

I see a fundamental Problem in the current goldcoin solution: The target time of gldcoin 2mins, and it now does not allow more than 5 blocks in 10 mins.
Diff keeps declining so far that it is negligible.
Essentially, right now we just have a race for the one to first find a block after the 10mins are up.
Also, with the Client accepting blocks that are up to 45 secs into the future, he who sets his machine 45secs into the future(by manipulating GetAdjustedTime() for instance)  probably wins this race, even with only 1-2 decent GPUs mining.
Sorry, but this solution isn't.

Kind regards
Mike

installed the latest version 0.7.1.3 but I rejecta almost everything

To the best of my understanding this is normal. You are probably triggering the new 51% defense system. The developers will be closely monitoring the network over the next few days to ensure that the system is functioning optimally.
Isn't the defense mechanism supposed to be triggered when _I_ make more than 5 blocks in 10 minutes?
Started with a fresh wallet and got 5 rejects before it accepted the first block.
When I look at times between block it seems like _any_ block found when there were already 10 blocks in last 10 minutes is rejected...

ok - how much time should i wait for POS reward from 100NVC imput after 30days. more then 3days?
Expect about 35-45 days in total, i.e. 5-15 days after the 30 days are over.

Kernel hash checking is performed using this condition:

hash(kernel) <= bnTarget * nValue * nTimeWeight

If nTimeWeight starts from zero, then immediate block generation will be prevented even with extremely low difficulty.

This feature is active from being of time startup of chain, but the TimeWeight is limited by 60 days, which is wrong. This will be fixed since 1 January 2014.
Thanks for the Explanation - now I can also see it in the source :-)
So nTimeweight would be higher than now from coin-age day 90 on onwards, so basically smaller amounts of NVC that took more than 90 days before the change would generate PoS faster, right? (assuming same PoS difficulty as right now, I guess it might adjust a bit after the switch)

Thanks!
Mike

regarding the nTimeWeight changes I talked to a few People who are dedicated fans of NovaCoin (as I too have become) and the Consensus is quite clear: we think it's a bad idea.
I would probably do something along These lines if it were activated:
Put Money into a wallet, and then take it offline for half a year or longer before taking it back online for PoS Generation, to not "risk" having a PoS after 40 days for which you get only paid for 10 days, i.e. only 25% of the actual Holding time.

Rewards are calculated from actual age and there are no plans to change it. nTimeWeight isn't used for rewards calculation, this variable is used for kernel hashes target calculation only and doesn't affect rewards.

Hm, would you mind explaining, what it is this Change actually does? From the comments, I then don't quite get it (and I'm confused about this "active coins participating").
Thanks a lot!

Congratulations from me too, but it's still a little buggy. I did create a transaction and I noticed that the actual fee was half than what Coin Control said it would be.
Coin Control is experimental feature and isn't quite ready for production yet... 0.4.4.5 will be released in the next few weeks, this release will include some serious CC fixes.
I read in this thread that it's being tested, but when I saw it in http://sourceforge.net/projects/novacoin/files/ and not in http://sourceforge.net/projects/novacoin/files/experimental/ , I was of course assuming that it's already production Quality...
So perhaps it should be moved there, and to avoid confusion give it a new Name like 0.4.4.6 for the bugfixed Version :-)

Thanks & Kind regards
Mike

EDIT: The coin control Features are also included when you build from source from github master tree.

nTimeWeight calculation

Originally it was planned to start nTimeWeight from zero at the 30-day min age. This should increase active coins participating the hash and provide additional security when proof-of-stake difficulty is low.

Anyway, this feature is disabled for now and needs some discussion.

https://github.com/CryptoManiac/novacoin/commit/b9289ef1acf9c6c6146c573955443f555abb9351

It's planned to enable this since 1 Jan 2014 if there will be no negative effects discovered.

Hi Balthazar,
I would like to congratulate you on a the implementation of the coin control Feature,
I think it's what was missing, and even though I did not yet use it for creating an actual Transaction,
I played around with it a bit, and yep... that's what we have needed :-)

regarding the nTimeWeight changes I talked to a few People who are dedicated fans of NovaCoin (as I too have become) and the Consensus is quite clear: we think it's a bad idea.
I would probably do something along These lines if it were activated:

I'm Aware that this is not in the interest of the network, so I'm heavily against it - imo the strength in NVC is for storing value with inbuilt hedge against coin Devaluation thanks to PoS. And the recent strength (in NVC/USD) during the recent Price rise in btc/usd Shows this quite well, seeing how most other coins took heavy losses in that time.

Kind regards
Mike
