Powered risers replace the 75w that is normally present with the pcie lane physical connection.
In other words, if you don't use powered risers, you will be overspeccing your 6/8 pin gpu connectors.
Always play safe. Miners don't let other miners use non-powered risers.

I want scrypt asics to come out. People here bitching about not being able to make money is embarrassing. If all you care about is making money, then you are missing the whole point of cryptocurrencies. We need asics to increase the diff and secure the network. we need more efficient miners instead of power hungry GPUs.
Its evolution baby.
No. GPUs are for the masses, ASICs are for the rich few. Keep scrypt in the hands of the people.

Just tried --intensity 15 --thread-concurrency 8192 -g 1 -w 256 Still showing 20khash, Ive tried other intensities such as 14,13,12 and same issue. Prolly need to wipe your drivers off cleanly. After uninstalling and rebooting, try the Catalyst 13.4 / APP SDK 2.9 combo. All my 7xxx cards love it.

I run 2x R9 290's on a 750W PSU stable at 920kh/s each. Other rig is 3x R9 290's with a 1200W PSU. Nice. Which make/model 290s? I'm running 3 290s on an 850W Corsair. (single 12V rail ftw)
Undervolted and underclocked they pull less than 200W doing 800 kh. They'll do 875 if you don't mind them pulling another 75W as well. Not really worth it from an efficiency point of view imo.
Also nice, which make/model 290 and what clocks / volts?

Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: WTF is going on with my GPUs (R9 290X and 6950) ?

I offer no solutions, but i always warn against mixing cards that like different --gpu-thread sizes. The 280x / 7970s are rare in that they like -g 2, and for that reason mixing them with any other cards (just about all of them) that prefer -g 1 is asking for it. In other words, OP, you are likely doing nothing wrong.
Got another machine you could throw that 6950 into?

OP, it's a risk, but it has paid off handsomely for me and many others.
Don't do the trading route though. If you lose it, you lose it all. If you go hardware and lose it, then at least you have the hardware to sell back.
Also, don't worry about the Scrypt ASICs. The sheep love to bleat about them, but they are still a pipedream from the investor pov. No-one wants to invest millions into a device which plays in a market where there are whales waiting to pull the rug out from under them. The second LTC hit $40 a month or two ago there were massive sells (hundreds of thousands of LTC) that went up. LTC has yet to recover. Keep that in mind.
