1  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Empherial vs immutable records. on: November 13, 2022, 06:03:21 PM
The archaeologists dig and find texts 4 & 5 thousand years old.
The future archaeologist will dig the digital files.
Nothing can really be kept for ever.
Even the blockchain can be abandoned for a newer method in the future.

I believe most of bitcointalk forum messages will be lost, therefore this post is empherial. Even with archivers that work so hard to save every post, in 1000 years, historians won't be able to piece together all the clues.

Blockchain is immutable until people purge stuff they don't like via rollups.

I'm looking for something more immutable than forums, but not quite as distributed as bitcoin.
2  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Einstein threw a party for time travelers. on: November 13, 2022, 05:54:49 PM
I think you are mistaken, it was Stephen Hawking.
Here is an article about it:

https://vinepair.com/articles/stephen-hawking-time-travel-party/

No one attended.

The invite for the party was published in newspapers the day after the event.

This was the first time a party for time travelers was documented in history.

However, it was wiped from the digital internet and replaced with the digital era story of Hawking replicating the Einstein experiment with similar results.

How about altering Ian Coleman's code?
He could insert the seeds from an Excel file

hello i have 10000 crypto wallet all of them have defrent 12 backup words how i open all of them in same time from program or something to insert txt file and it open .. its hard to keep open one eveytime
Go one by one.
When you created those wallet you did not create them using a script, did you?

Just interested to know, why or how did you get even those 10,000 wallets? LOL

6  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Need Information about Electrum on: December 04, 2020, 12:38:21 PM
Q1. As long as you stay off internet is safe.

Q2. read this for cold storage and how to sign transactions

https://electrum.readthedocs.io/en/latest/coldstorage.html?highlight=usb

I am using electrum for sometime but today first time joined just because I need some information about Electrum wallet.

I have 2 computers and one is connected to Internet and other is not which is not connected I have Electrum Wallet and storing my coins for long term is this safe way to have coins in this wallet and connecting only when I have to transfer coins.

Second question can I transfer my coins without connecting internet if someone can guide me this could be great because I don't want take any risk with these my coins.

7  Bitcoin / Electrum / Fake Electrum version 4.0 and hardware wallets on: August 24, 2020, 06:09:35 PM
I'm just wondering if someone downloaded the fake version and tried to use it with his hardware wallet.
Is someone here who did it accidentally (or on purpose) to tell us if his hardware wallet protected (or not) his coins?
8  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger hacked or not? 100k lost on: August 24, 2020, 05:58:27 PM
Is it possible a fake MEW to compromise Ledger (without entering somehow the seed)?
Ledger is supposed to sign transactions even to infected PCs....

It is possible that he used a fake MEW or something like that, that could lead to some other exploit similar to that one from last week:
https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360015738179

I don't know if the two incidents are related.

I am worried about my ledger now....
9  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Bitcoin, cryptos and the imminent threat of a Quantum Computer on: June 07, 2020, 01:05:14 PM
Many of us have heard about the Quantum Computer (QC).
Although it has been on an experimental stage yet, it is a matter of time to be built.
In one of his speeches, Antonopoulos said that a full working QC could have been in full function within the next decade.

So, when this happen, a QC could be a risk regarding all cryptocurrencies in the market.

Furthermore, to be more specific about what a QC is capable of it is that, a QC could mine all the rest coins in a few minutes, maybe, and break the keys of all the addresses.

Some people believe that there are more interesting fields for a QC to be used like medical research, industrial secrets, espionage (in general), than just have it for cryptos which it could meant extra time for us to get prepared for what is coming next.

In this forum, I have read many times about quantum resistant wallets / blockchain (whatever could be utilized to protect us). However, I have never heard of computer engineers able to develop a defence system, or any BTC team that would be ready to confront a possible QC threat.

Additionally, in case of a QC and a successful Quantum resistant ecosystem, a QC would allow somebody to break the keys of all the owners’ “lost” addresses because they themselves will not be able to change them on time to the new ecosystem field.
The “lost” coins (BTC or crypto) could be used again, contributing to the price.

Please, just imagine the scenario:
1 million or more BTC available in the exchanges, simultaneously!
BTC’s price, and the crypto ecosystem, could collapse instantly by selling  in a ridiculous cheap price.
This is the bad scenario.
A good one is, that the new owners could sell them, one by one, for fiat, to get rich, or to finance their QC research.

Do you think that all these could ever be a reality?
In my opinion, we are not allowed to think otherwise or ignore it.

It reminds me as I am thinking of the QC, the Enigma Engine and “Bombe”, the computer built by Alan Touring, who broke the German code.
Its existence was a top-secret and was finally revealed many decades later, in the ‘70s...
10  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Openbazaar's wallet on: January 30, 2020, 06:03:47 PM
I would like to thank all of you, OmegaStarScream & DaveF for the very simple solution (using the electrum wallet) and o_e_l_e_o for explaining me how BIP44 works.
Thank you very much.
11  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Openbazaar's wallet on: January 30, 2020, 10:47:52 AM
I've recently bought an item on Openbazaar and after paying, I wanted to withdraw the rest BTCs to my wallet.
I couldn't do it from the Openbazaar's wallet because of "insufficient balance" so I thought I could sweep the rest to my mobile wallet.
So, I inserted the seed to Ian Coleman's web page (offline, downloaded from Github) to search for the private key of the change address (I know the address from the transaction).
The 1st address, of the list, was the one I bought the item.
I've browsed several hundred addresses (one buy one and using ctr-F) without finding the changes address (however the BTC is there, but where)...

Any ideas ??
12  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: 51% Attack on: January 24, 2020, 05:43:15 PM
Long before they collect the ASICs for the attack, the government will realize that they can make money mining Bitcoin.
So if they could spend so much money, I thing they would continue the mining and not attacking.
So I believe it is not a possible scenario...

Following scenario: A government would like to destroy Bitcoin. It buys a significant number of ASICs to build up a huge mining farm and carries out a 51% attack.
From my point of view it will not be so easy to buy so many ASICs as once - what do you think?
Another question: Will it be noticed (how?) that somebody buys a big stack of ASICs and/or are we able to identify such a behavior monitoring the network's hashrate?

14  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: Where greed comes from? on: December 05, 2019, 08:07:50 PM
Actually some animals (primates) have a human-like behaviour when they are trying to find their "position" in their community or want to become the leaders of the team.
The following video is not the one I was searching for, but it can give you an idea of what I mean.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv71JevtR-0

They don't know that. The percent doesn't matter, the concept of greed has to do with the desire for excess.

Last time I checked we classified animals as creatures acting upon their instincts not making conscious decisions. Desire is a "Conscious" thing iyam. Doesn't really fit in with the animals, Either it's instinct or they are making "Conscious" decisions.

However, when deceiving and cheating people becomes a dominant behavior, that elicits a negative feedback loop, then it truly does become more destructive than instructive.

I think we are currently living in this "deceiving and cheating" world.
15  Other / Off-topic / Re: I bought my 10 year daughter a Ledger Nano S, not sure if it's the right move. on: December 05, 2019, 07:36:04 PM
I would buy her a piggy bank, in order to learn how to hodl.
Even if she is good in PCs, I believe she is too young for cryptos.

18  Local / Ελληνικά (Greek) / Re: YTC (YELLOW TRADING COIN) ΝΕΑ ΑΠΑΤΗ; on: October 18, 2019, 02:29:46 PM

Opportunities?
Don't expect to make a lot of money from signature Bounties.
ICOs time is over.
2-3 years before it was much different.

On this forum, Merit provides great opportunities, so everyone wants it.
20  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is it possible to generate every address from one seed on: October 17, 2019, 01:47:58 PM
Is it possible to calculate (theoretically) , how many common addresses could derive from the seeds?

If there are 2048^12 different seed combinations (in 12-word BIP39) and each has  2^256 keys then we have 6.3X10^116 different addresses.
We have altogether in Bitcoin 2^160=1,46x10^48 different addresses, which is a smaller number than the first one.

How many of them are common?

I would like to know is there a limit to how many bitcoin public keys be generated using one seed phrase. Is it unlimited?
It is unlimited

Quote
If it's not limited then this would mean that wallets with different seeds would cause a clash of their addresses. Am I right?
You really gave a good point however I think there must have an explanation. I will wait for others answer.

As pooya said it is limited to 2^256 (in practical terms only 255)

However this is a very big number.

Every seed can create billions of addresses in each derivation path. That means billions of addresses in change addresses, in legacy, segwit, native segwit, etc etc

A collision , which is what you are talking about is impossible in practical terms. Billions of addresses randomly generated is hard for our minds to understand.

From antonopoulos mastering bitcoin:

Quote
https://github.com/bitcoinbook/bitcoinbook/blob/develop/ch05.asciidoc#navigating-the-hd-wallet-tree-structure

The HD wallet tree structure offers tremendous flexibility. Each parent extended key can have 4 billion children: 2 billion normal children and 2 billion hardened children. Each of those children can have another 4 billion children, and so on. The tree can be as deep as you want, with an infinite number of generations.
