1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][VOT]: VoteCoin - a new era of anonymous crypto democracy on: August 05, 2020, 06:57:43 PM
This can happen if a zcash peer connects to VoteCoin node, I'm not sure why such situation happens.
Anyway, to avoid the error message, please use -alerts=0 parameter when starting votecoind.
Or put alerts=0 to votecoin.conf file. Hope it helps

Yesterday, a wallet update was released and the instructions recommend updating by sending to a shielded address. Can I send from T the address of the old wallet to the Z address of the new wallet? Are there any risks?

If your old wallet supports new sapling addresses, it is safe to send your VOT as you mentioned in your post.

New version of VoteCoin Wallet (2.1.0) has been released.

We are happy to announce that VoteCoin 2.1.0 is released, and both CLI and GUI wallets were updated.
Most noticeable change is that we implemented superior performance improvements by enabling fast Sapling payments for polls.

Other important improvements in this release:
  • Blossom network upgrade in early December which will shorten block times from 150s to 75s.
  • DoS Mitigation: Mempool Size Limit and Random Drop
  • Fixed an issue where asynchronous operations were sometimes reporting success when they had actually failed
  • Fake chain detection during initial block download
  • Disabling old Sprout proofs

CLI wallet download: https://github.com/Tomas-M/VoteCoin/releases

Enjoy! :]

New version of VoteCoin 2.0.4 is released

we are happy to announce that VoteCoin 2.0.4 is released, and both CLI and GUI wallets were updated.
Most noticeable change is optimization in GUI wallet for faster sync and better performance.
Since the previous version of VoteCoin wallet has been already deprecated, it is essentially required to update to the new version

GUI wallet download: https://github.com/Tomas-M/VoteCoin-wallet/releases
CLI wallet download: https://github.com/Tomas-M/VoteCoin/releases

For your information, there is already an implementation in progress for import/export viewing keys (ivk) which are needed for switching the voting to sapling (for faster poll publishing). So next version of VoteCoin will most likely switch to Sapling even for its voting features (sapling is already supported in VoteCoin but only for sending/receiving fast shielded transactions)

Enjoy! :]

... but from a financial standpoint if the value drops miners will leave and the entire blockchain could fall apart...
I understand and agree, you are right

12 Satoshi? What is happening to this project? One of the best projects with Voting feature built in with so much potential going into 2020 Election year in the US.  TOM WAKE UP PLEASE!
I have to admit that the exchange rate is actually the last thing I would worry about Smiley

Tom,

How are you? All good? We have an Altcoin rush these days. Would you like to give us an update of what is happening?

TeamCyr.

Hi, VoteCoin is still waiting for import/export support for viewing keys.
We need that to be able to switch all polls/campaigns from sprout format (old slow secure payments) to sapling format (new fast secure payments)
There is nobody in VoteCoin team who would have balls to code that part ourselves, so we're waiting for ZCash to officially support it so we can backport it into VoteCoin.
Apparently this takes much longer than expected, so unfortunately there is no ETA known yet

Great info thank you Tom.

I ran the code, it opens the GUI wallet and in the CMD page it just says wallet start, over and over.
You are running GUI wallet from command line, that is normal debug output which you should safely ignore.

IMPORTANT: Zcash Counterfeiting Vulnerability Successfully Remediated
original post: https://z.cash/blog/zcash-counterfeiting-vulnerability-successfully-remediated/

VoteCoin is based on zcash, so it had the same vulnerability in its code as well.

Since VoteCoin is following zcash development closely and our team is backporting all news and improvements from zcash, especially the Sapling upgrade, the vulnerability has been fixed in the same manner as it was in ZCash, on the same day when ZCash fixed it (by activating Sapling upgrade in VoteCoin network on 28th of October, 2018).

We have found no evidence that the vulnerability was discovered by anyone else or that counterfeiting occurred.

It is possible to verify the total amounts of coins held in sprout addresses (i.e., the Sprout shielded pool) in the output of following command:
Code:
votecoin-cli getblockchaininfo
As long as the value in the shielded pools are greater than zero, no counterfeiting has been detected.

Any idea how I can program a vote that distributes the outcome to voters (sort of gambling I guess). I like to create a poll for tomorrows superbowl game in the US it is sort of a big deal here.
Distribution of winning votes in this case cannot be handled by the protocol or by the wallet, since there is no way for the network to know what vote won. So you need to distribute winning votes manually, I am afraid

Regarding Sapling upgrade, it was a necessary step towards faster and less memory-hungry shielded transactions. Before sapling, every shielded transaction used more than 1GB of RAM and it took several minutes to complete. Due to that, creating polls/votings through VoteCoin took long time and lots of resources, since the polls are technically stored on blockchain as a shielded transactions. Now after Sapling, only about 50MB of RAM is needed to create a shielded transaction, and it only takes few seconds to compute. Sapling shielded addresses are now default in VoteCoin (since 2.0.2), it works if you want to send a transaction to somebody else, but polls are still using old pre-sapling mechanism (called sprout) and it is still neither optimal nor fast.

So, our next goal is to switch to Sapling for polls too in VoteCoin as well. But this requires support for exporting of viewing keys from the wallet for sapling addresses, which is not yet supported by VoteCoin. Since VoteCoin is a fork of zcash, we decided to wait for ZCash to implement it, and then we can backport it easily. Anybody in VoteCoin team does not feel comfortable trying to implement this feature on our own at the moment, since making a mistake would have fatal consequences, so it's safer to wait for official support in ZCash.

Regarding portable wallet, the current GUI wallet can be safely used from an USB device on Windows, since it stores data within the wallet directory. However this is not possible on MAC, since MAC stores wallet data on local user's home directory, regardless of where was the wallet application started from.

Thank you, very helpful and clear instructions. it worked fine, I hope you will be doing new materials regarding the CPU mining on Windows and Linux.
Question: why the wallet address changes every time when intitating the vot.wallet
and how the system save it? please advice. thank you

What do you exactly mean by "initiating the vot.wallet"?
VoteCoin stores addersses in wallet.dat file. If this file is missing, VoteCoin assumes you want to create new wallet, so it creates new addresses for you.

Releasing new version of VoteCoin (both CLI and GUI wallets) v2.0.2
Since this release, sapling addresses are used by default (voting still uses sprout main address though)
Notable changes:

- Add Sapling support to RPC z_mergetoaddress
- Mitigate transaction expiry height related DoS vector
- Return Sapling addresses by default when calling RPC z_getnewaddress
- Add Sapling spend and output description benchmarks to RPC zcbenchmark
- Fix bug with Sapling chain value tracking
- Fix encoding bug with non-ASCII parameter paths, primarily affecting Windows
- Backport from upstream the relaying of blocks when pruning
- Donít ban peers when loading pre-Sapling blocks during syncing
- Fix bug with contents of default memo in Sapling

No news is great news
This is just for information, there are currently no news in VoteCoin, since we are waiting for implementation of z_exportViewingKey RPC call in the zcash core. As soon as this is implemented, we will backport it to VoteCoin and continue our work to switch all polls to the new sapling format.
As of our understanding, z_exportViewingKey is not yet supported in zcash 2.0.2 so it may be few more months before this happens.

the debug window at the start of wallet is great btw

Just for your info, you can also see the debug in "settings" section, just scroll down a bit.

In the GUI Wallet, click Settings and scroll down to see log. You can try to find out what is the problem from messages there.
If there is no clue, close the wallet and try to find peers.dat file (it is in \resources\app\VoteCoin\peers.dat)
Erase this file and start the wallet again. Could help.

We've successfully sent a sapling shielded payment
https://explorer.votecoin.site/tx/d5f798e8a10b0a9aab078577e42da76fb39ca7208342e0bf0a152ecef2f2d9ba
The transaction takes just few seconds to prove, and memory requirements are really low.
Next version of VoteCoin GUI Wallet will create new sapling addresses by default. Old sprout addresses are now considered deprecated.

Sapling in VoteCoin is now active.
The following pools support it as of now:

 whibbit.cn
 powermining.pw
 luckpool.net
 aikapool.com
 basementpool.org
 minerspool.cc

Make sure to use pool with proper support else you will waste your resources.
Thank  you
