I never heard that waves will top ethereum or will be the next ethereum, but I know waves has a potential. Waves and Ethereum is comparable because they do many almost the same tasks. But there are times that you may say why waves? why ethereum?  Waves is designed for easy crowdfunding, it's pretty direct when it comes to token operations and fast transactions

NEO is really interesting coin for me. It has built in smart contracts but not popular as ethereum. 
Its more fast then ethereum but still not getting attention from projects and big investors
