Is this coin a fair launch or not? I am getting mixed information. If it is not, or there are serious questions, we need to clean it up. It's an excellent coin and it shouldn't be trashed over something that can be fixed.
Of course! It was clearly fair. Take in account it was the 15th or 16th first coin and pools were built on starting ... All of this was so frenetic !! In other order of thing, I have built a faucet for bitgem: http://faucet.bitgem.inI have enabled an address for faucet recharging gXYiUgs6LhbhkHW6C7WfFqxneuwzTJaVNy. I have put some few BTGs in faucet account, so faucet is operative. Regards

It is the zero hype coin. Even though it was one of the most original of the early coins it has no hype.
1) One of the coolest wallets. Even now few other coins have added extra tricks like creating new kinds of coins or gems. 2) Dev disappears but always comes back. He is sitting on the beach in Puri sipping Margueritas and every now and then he checks and sees if an update is needed. Most coins from that era the original devs are long gone. 3) Market cap is about USD 5k. There is no doubt it is a better investment at this price than almost any other coin.
But
1) Website has rough English and some toxic words like 'forge'. 2) No block explorer as far as I know.
Small amounts of bitgem keep trickling out at current prices so a person can buy slowly. There is not enough depth to buy very much though. About 4 bitcoin would buy the entire sell side of cryptsy. A waiting game right now.
Thanks for suggestions, I am working in order to improve web content. Explorer has been working fine as far as I know : http://explorer.bitgem.in

So I'm new to the Linux wallets, but not new to Linux. I downloaded the source, compiled it, added the nodes to the .conf, but I get no connections. Getinfo gives me this:
{ "version" : "v0.4.1-nvc-34-gff1ac9d-beta", "protocolversion" : 60006, "walletversion" : 60000, "balance" : 0.00000000, "newmint" : 0.00000000, "stake" : 0.00000000, "blocks" : 0, "moneysupply" : 0.00000000, "connections" : 0, "proxy" : "", "ip" : "0.0.0.0", "difficulty" : 0.00024414, "testnet" : false, "keypoololdest" : 1417328127, "keypoolsize" : 101, "paytxfee" : 0.00100000, "errors" : "" }
Any suggestions? Any help is much appreciated.

Hi, I have re-arranged a bit our bitgem website, doing it more simple and clear, and improving the accesibility of info. www.bitgem.inCurrently, Colored coins are being built only in wallet, that is, in a local fashion. I am thinking about spreading the colored partition along the blockchain, but this step will require a lot of work, so I am not sure about deadlines. Regards. Sometime in the next few weeks I will try to send you some suggestions for improving the English on the website. But you must make the website mobile friendly. A lot of users use small operating systems and screens. One of the most undervalued coins out there in my opinion. I have re-arranged web, but I dont know if it is properly showed in smartphone. Abour redaction, I will receive your correctiosn with pleasure, thanks in advance,

Quick question... I see in the Original post that the source should be at https://github.com/bitgem/bitgem , but this appears to be the old source for the coin. Where can I get the source for the newer 0.4.1.8 release? I am reopening my pool and want to make sure that I have the newest code available. Or am I reading these changes as "The underlying code will stay the same, but you can alter the coin WITHIN the Windows Only (0.4.1. wallet." ? Oh and BTW, http://btg.pnwminer.com is back up and running. Hi, 0.4.8 version ( https://github.com/bitgem/bitgem/commit/2cf6829a32aea4b15801cdbc71a27cff352f6e4b) is the last stable version, and should be nice because of core features are not updated in experimental 0.4.9_ALPHA1. Most of 0.4.9_ALPHA1 are a lot of Qt and wallet model commits and are in my local repository, because it is mainly an experimental release and I prefer to mature the code a bit more. Anyway, 0.4.8 is fine for all-porpouses. Regards Hello again Mineral. Good to see your still around yep, here we go

i havent installed the alpha yet, i will and i'll report (if) any bugs i might find... but wouldnt be cool if i could forge a bad ass 1000 btg diamond that couldnt be unforged and only could ever be sold as is with its unique timestamp (+ shape/color etc)? Who is holding that sweet Diamond inside his chest??? (anyone might wonder looking at the wallet build-in gem-explorer...) hehehe, a solid 1000 BTG Diamond would be a subtype of colored coin, somehow "solid colored gem". I called it "sticky transactions", because it should be sent the whole amount of coins for processing the transaction. Anyway, that is not too difficult to implement, but exchanges should show these transactions somehow. Anyway, it would very funny in exchanges !!

FIRST CRYPTO-CURRENCY TRADING COLORED COINSBitgem provides a modular wallet enabling colored gems. Colored gems embody built-in wallet colored coins, providing sending gems feature, and applying an automatic conversion between BTG and gems {DMD, RBY, SPH, EMD}.

BTG can be forged into Diamonds, Rubys, Sapphires or Emeralds, or abbrev. DMD, RBY, SPR, EMD. There are two processes implied: 1) Forge gems. Gem-forging process is represented like BTG -> {DMD, RBY, SPR, EMD}. It is carried out when user forges DMD, RBY, SPR, EMD with explicit settings of carat, color, clarity, cut and shape properties. Modular WalletIt is done extending bitcoin original wallet, by means of an extension of wallet source. So, extending original wallet ( wallet.dat), it is possible to storing gem forging information into extended wallet (gemwallet.dat). WARNING: DELETING OF GEMWALLET.DAT FILE WILL IMPLY LOSS OF GEM FORGING INFO.2) Send gems. Bitgeminization is represented like {DMD, RBY, SPR, EMD} -> BTG. It is the opposite of gem forging, and it is carried out when an incoming BTG transaction is refunded to existent gems and re-forged. The aim of current developement is to provide a native method for sending colored gems, ie. DMD, RBY, SPR, EMD. Gem forging and Bitgeminization (send gems) processes are planned to be a previous stage to true colored gems. So say if someone would send me 1 diamond at 1 carat, i would then receive that 1 diamond which is automatically then transferred back to Bitgem?
How would i attach a contract to that, if it cancels the diamond back to btg?
If sender cancels tx, diamond will go on forged as before. If tx goes on, you would receive the same diamond refunded into bitgems, ready for being forged again. This is the trick, it can be re-forged as often as desired. Somehow, refund-forge process provides the malleability of gems not present in physical gemstones.
