most ppl posting here got it in the $500-$1000 range.

Just the newest noobs who didn't discover Bitcoin until last autumn. Judging by the number of low-activity posters, you could be right though.

Of the about 2.2 million bitcoin owners now, only about 0.5 million can have bought in at <$300. The rest have joined in the last 4 months.

I wonder if more than half of the forum members have joined since the start of October.

We now have 252k members, of whom 100k has joined Nov-2013 or more recently. Source: public memberlog.

The forum membership is not growing as quickly as bitcoin, since there is less and less reason for lurkers to join in the discussion. (And unfortunately less reason for present members to contribute. Or lurkers to lurk.)

Thanks Risto. It confirms my suspicions but I didn't think it was quite that extreme. Over 80% of BTC owners came in in the last 4 months? Wow.

My guess is that the percentage of miners among the 20% older owners is a lot higher than among the 80% newer owners.

Likewise, I would think the percentage of miners is much higher among more senior forum members than among the newer members.
Perhaps its time for the forums first BTC Census.

325  Economy / Speculation / Re: ....Aaaaaaand $100 on Gox on: February 21, 2014, 02:20:22 AM
How are those 261 dollar BTCs you guys bought looking?  Roll Eyes

HODLing them (by proxy!)
Well my fiat was already in gox, so am happy, as i could do nothing with it anyways.

$250 was a good price if you were bugg#red either way.  Shocked , so I could of had double, but am not sure it makes a difference with goxcoin.
326  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why didn't MtGox halt trading like they've done in the past? on: February 21, 2014, 12:14:24 AM
What I find really strange and I am surprised nobody picked up on that. Why did the Gox price tank 2 hours prior to the announcement concerning the security issues. If this is not some insider trading I do not know what is.
volume shot up 10x from 2k to 20k, all those people jumping to turn there Goxcoin to Gox$$$ that they cannot get out ??, right before an announcement that should of confirmed resuming BTC withdraws but didn't.  Huh

Whatever way I try to make sense of it, I cant. It's almost like Gox is actively engaged in a scorched earth policy to destroy themselves.

328  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: T13hydra - Thread Locked, Unofficial Disscusion on: February 20, 2014, 11:23:54 PM
A few emails are trickling through, which is great. If I have time this weekend or perhaps today I will collate the all info we do have in preparation for the cutoff of submissions. Which comes to around 10 or so emails off the top of my head.

Please note that if you have not emailed the address on the spreadsheet I will only make cursory additions to the information submitted to the lawyers as they will require full names and addresses of those that wish to be recompensated. There is also the chance we will have to create a legal entity (a limited company) to go forward and wrap up all our claims into, but more on this when I have received communication from the lawyers.

Sorry to repeat myself, but after this weekend I'm going to be crazy busy with moving and final wedding plans so after the information is collated and submitted I may be missing in action for a couple of weeks to a month, but I should be able to check in on the thread from time to time. On a personal note I'm driving for close to 4 hours a day right now during the week due to my work. So I have not forgot about this and I'm still really looking forward with going ahead with some form of litigation.
Moving and wedding, probably the two most stressful moments in life. Good luck with the both, hope all goes smooth for you.  Smiley

You guys are fucking nuts buying on Gox.
Nuts - Maybe
Stupid - probably
Brave - Absolutely

I know if I had a couple of $K kicking around that I could afford to loose I would take the chance.

There is opportunity, that does not come about often.  Grin

333  Economy / Speculation / Re: Mt. Gox Announces New Daily/Monthly Withdraw Policy! See Why on: February 19, 2014, 07:27:10 AM
I've read most of the press the last few weeks...but why is the current price still below $300 on Gox? The first few days with the panic I could get that but Gox has been better with communication lately and is telling people they can withdraw soon...if I had funds on there I'd be buying up some bitcoin at those prices that's for sure.

Sold BTC @ 550, brought @ 250.  Grin just hope I can get the goxcoin out some day  Roll Eyes

I only had 0.6 in there anyways. Time will tell if I wished I had more, or less.

One thing for sure, when withdraws are possible this horse is bolting. When will they open that gate ?

335  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: BITMAIN Antminer support and OverClocking thread on: February 18, 2014, 04:30:31 AM
Just received my latest Antminer and I'm baffled.  I don't know linux but I have overclocked a dozen of these over the past few months thanks to this thread.
But this one I can't figure out.  When I key in "vim /asic-freq/
All I get is this:

Any idea how I get to the point where I can modify the file?

Ha ha, lol I did the same  Cheesy

Then I downloaded and installed nano from the software menu on the ant ( dead easy), I am more comfortable with nano  Wink
336  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: bfgminer stratum proxy on: February 18, 2014, 04:23:02 AM
I have tried with the same results.

you can`t fix this until bitman release v3.9.0 of the cgminer fork he is using

I've just  received my ant and according to the Installed packages it is running CGminer 3.12.0-1

The results are the same, 100% error.

Someone smart should provide a work around for this.

Am guessing its not a CGminer bug as I read elsewhere ( and it would be fixed in the next version of CG)
and more to do with bitmain's driver/alterations to CGminer.

Perhaps to restrict self-moderated threads to Members/Jr Members level and above, feed the newbies threads to the trolls for experience.

It is very unlikely that >members will organize a scam on there account.
