Oh dear... some of you thought I was being serious
1042  Other / Off-topic / Bitcoin - Magic Computer Money on: July 24, 2012, 02:47:23 AM
Ira (bearbones) and I were chatting today. We've come up with a new slogan which should be made the official slogan of Bitcoin:

Bitcoin
Magic Computer Money

So the new strategy is that whenever you're introducing Bitcoin to someone, don't try to explain how it works, or why it's so amazing. Just say, "it's magic computer money."

Also, when users open up the Satoshi desktop client software, there should be a new splash screen that flashes black and yellow real fast for about 5 seconds and it should say "MAGIC COMPUTER MONEY"

Thoughts?
1043  Economy / Gambling / Re: SatoshiDICE.com - The World's Most Popular Bitcoin Game on: July 22, 2012, 01:07:15 PM
perhaps here is as good a place as any to warn people about the fake site, satoshidice.net  <-- don't send your coins here

Yeah thanks Payb.tc.   SatoshiDice.NET is a scam site. Make sure to only use SatoshiDice.com
1044  Economy / Gambling / Re: Does satoshidice.com own satoshidice.net? Or have I just been scammed? on: July 22, 2012, 01:05:29 PM
Huh I've been waiting for my normal payout for a few days now on SatoshiDice, things seemed a little laggy and not quit right. I then realized that I was on "satoshidice.net" instead of my usual ".com" I think I may have just been scammed unless It's just me. Anyone know if the ".net" is legit?
Do you have any idea how you wound up at this site? Did you type it in by mistake or was it linked or advertised somewhere?

Yeah this is a good question...
1045  Economy / Gambling / Re: Does satoshidice.com own satoshidice.net? Or have I just been scammed? on: July 22, 2012, 04:37:04 AM
We do not own satoshidice.net... I think you were scammed Sad  Note the bet addresses are not the same as ours. This is the first time I've been made aware of this.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this?

Less of the Shady "Give me your bitcoins and I will give you back more" and penny gambling sites and mentality.

More professional "men in business suites" with proper accounting and accountability.

I am rather new to bitcoins, but I have been in business and finance since I left school back in the 80's and while I love the idea of bitcoins and very much want them to succeed I am rather shocked by the abondance of get rich quick schemes, gambling, badly secured amaturish exchanges and what appear to be Ponzi schemes.

If bitcoins want to be taken serious a place as a reliable, non gimmick currency we need serious and non gimmicky uses, people and businesses.

Just my opinion.

That will come in time. Professionalism follows money, and money doesn't arrive in Bitcoinland until it's been vetted a while by the amateurs. An amateur will risk $500 on an amateur site far sooner than a professional will risk $50,000 on a professional site.

But let's look how fast it's already moving. A year ago, we had MyBitcoin as the best ewallet (a crappy site run by an anonymous scumbag which then disappeared and stole everyone's money). Now we have Blockchain.info, Paytunia, and CoinBase... all beautiful sites run by professionals who do not hide their identities.

1047  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: what's next for Bitcoin? on: July 21, 2012, 02:20:49 AM
I understand the developer-types are highly focused on technical improvements, and I hope they stay that way. From a non-developer point of view, here's how I see the next steps (occurring over the next year or so):

1) Easier/faster ways to pay in and pay out from Bitcoin in many countries. BitInstant has a pretty good solution thus far (cash deposits) but it is not ideal, and only available in a few countries. The expansion of these pay in and pay out options is essential (and BitInstant has some exciting developments in the pipeline).

2) As #1 occurs, the ability for Bitcoin to fill several niche markets becomes realistic. Gaming/gambling/adult industry/etc. These are massive markets in and of themselves but are restrained from growth by limitations of #1 above.

3) As the niche uses are demonstrated in #2, "the world" will start understanding Bitcoin's value proposition. Then things start getting very interesting very quickly. Once Bitcoin has proven a significant base of usage, a world of entrepreneurs will start finding new uses for it everywhere.

The brain power involved is also my main reason to think that the current valuation is way below true value. Any venture capitalist worth his salt would throw much more money at such an awesome team of people working on such a game-changing projet.

I'm extremely new to the whole Bitcoin world. I first started hearing of it and learning about it two weeks ago, and bought my first Bitcoins two days ago. I'm completely absorbed with the whole idea and desperately want to see it succeed. That being read, where can I find Bitcoin startups and send some BTC their way to help with their success?

Welcome! Yes "absorbed" is the word I'd use to describe how I felt when I first discovered this crazy thing in May of last year.

To find Bitcoin startups, you can see many in peoples' forum signatures, but all there is the big list of BTC accepting sites here:  https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade  Also look in the Marketplace subforum where many startup announcements are made.

1050  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Vegemesta restaurant in Helsinki accepting Bitcoin on: July 21, 2012, 02:05:02 AM
I can confirm it. This is made possible by the joint efforts of Bittiraha.fi and Bitpay. Vegemesta is first trying it out in one of their Helsinki restaurants and hopefully expanding Bitcoin acceptance to their other restaurants later on. They have half a dozen restaurants in Finland.

I'm excited about this. It's the first of many to come, Bittiraha.fi is committed to delivering Bitpay's wonderful payment system to merchants all over Finland. We're only getting started.

Keep on kickin' ass Smiley
1051  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I made 100BTC with Satoshi's dice. Is this normal? on: July 21, 2012, 12:59:20 AM
It's best to stop when you are ahead. The house always wins.

If you do win, you've beaten the odds, so get out before it gets a chance to win it back.

@unitclick, i wrote a script to do martingale betting for satoshi dice (it's on this forum somewhere), and quit when i was 30 btc ahead. 100% quit. satoshi dice was a lot of fun for me but if i never play it again, i'll remain ahead forever.

I don't like your attitude! If you come back, I'll send strippers and coke for you Smiley
1052  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Longer Term Holding? Where To Put BC's? on: July 21, 2012, 12:56:59 AM
If you are interested in diversifying into Bitcoins, then just buy Bitcoins. Don't bother with a place like GLBSE. GLBSE is equity shares in various bitcoin-related companies (of varying credibility). Don't get into GLBSE until you're already an expert on the Bitcoin ecosystem.

So just buy a bunch of coins, and keep the wallet safe. I recommend you make an account at blockchain.info/wallet. Then make a backup using the Paper Wallet option at that site. Once you have the paper wallet printed out, put it in a bank safety deposit box (or make 2 copies and put them in different places). Once you're confident in your wallet backups, then send the Bitcoins there and sleep soundly at night.

No, thank you.

I'd be willing to bet you inspire others at least as much as they inspire you.

Keep up the good work buddy.

Thanks Smiley

1054  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Proposal 1:10 split, every block reward halves. on: July 20, 2012, 09:53:45 PM
Certainly, when a Bitcoin is worth $10,000, people will be using fractions of a coin in normal affairs. It's annoying/awkward for people to deal in fractions, for sure.

But, I don't think the answer is to change the meaning of what a Bitcoin is. Rather, a better solution is for the marketplace to give arbitrary names to the smaller notational units. We already see this happening. 1/1000 of a coin is a milibit, and the smallest unit is endearingly called a Satoshi. This is an organic, market-based process by which a naming standard will be arrived at spontaneously over time.

Indeed, at some point in the future the Starbucks barrista will tell us our coffee costs 23.20 millibits and we'll think nothing of it.
1055  Economy / Gambling / Re: SatoshiDICE.com - The World's Most Popular Bitcoin Game on: July 20, 2012, 09:39:43 PM
I just noticed you have a twitter account.

It says:

Quote
Satoshi Dice
@SatoshiDICE
The Original SatoshiDICE.com - Win up to 65,000x your Bitcoin bet instantly. Fair, open, verifiable rolls. Over 99% breakeven odds.

Which is inaccurate in a couple of ways.

Fixed, thanks! The info was out of date.
1056  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I made 100BTC with Satoshi's dice. Is this normal? on: July 20, 2012, 09:35:39 PM
Oh also, the best way to play SatoshiDice is using an ewallet account from Blockchain.info/wallet.  Inside the wallet, click on the Send Money tab, then on the left side you'll see a SatoshiDice link. The transactions are usually processed faster through this method, and Blockchain.info made a really nice interface IMO.
1057  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I made 100BTC with Satoshi's dice. Is this normal? on: July 20, 2012, 09:29:03 PM
As the proprietor of SatoshiDice, I can tell you that because you won that 100btc, my family will now not be able to eat this week. So enjoy your winnings!!!  Cry

Actually, someone won 900btc from SatoshiDice a few weeks ago on one bet. THAT really hurt.

People win and lose all the time on the site, but please remember that gambling should always be considered fun entertainment, never let it become an addiction. Also, for those of you who win money from the site, I encourage you to spend some portion of it in the Bitcoin economy. It helps nurture the ecosystem and Satoshi will bless you with good luck.

1059  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin potential value on: July 20, 2012, 05:25:21 PM
As with everything in life, nobody will truely know the value of bitcoins (or whatever) until there is a shortage of it...

As with everything in life, there is never a shortage if prices are not fixed.

(caveat - short term shortages can and do happen all the time, but long term shortages are impossible if prices are free to move)

Cool story.  I was just wondering which projects genuinely inspired you.  Thanks.

The specific item that prompted this post was just me spending a few mins reading through the Technical Development threads. As I'm not a programmer, it's all alien to me, and so I stand in admiration at the expertise and knowledge of these people. It's getting harder for me to think up reasons why the Bitcoin project could fail, with such minds behind it.
