1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: [Scrypt] Best MultiPool with profitability coin switch (check out the list!) on: April 10, 2015, 05:29:53 AM
It'd be nice if the poll was updated. I'm having trouble choosing which pool to join. I was a user of TradeMyBit before they shut down. Now on multipool, but don't know if that's the best one for my current hardware.
2  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bitcoin debit card on: February 16, 2015, 02:21:06 PM
Sure, the reason for that is that we currently have 3 official and 1 unofficial exchange rates for our currency (and very strict currency controls and limitations in place), which makes inflation skyrocket, as we only have "access" to the worst exchange rate (black market). So, we keep looking for alternatives to safeguard our income, one of which is bitcoin (and fiat currency in general, other than our own.)

I can further explain this in detail if needed; suffice to say that a card such as this one would be highly welcome.

Not sure how you think a visa card is going to alleviate these problems. The card is denominated in US$, and each time you make a local purchase or withdraw money at an ATM, its the official exchange rate that will be applied. Im fairly sure you wont be able to withdraw US$ at an ATM there, nor can you make payments in $, it will all be in Bolivares at the official exchange rate.

A card like this might be handy if you want to make (internet) purchases abroad, but I suppose you'll have import taxes that make that about as pointless? or am I missing something ?
That's basically the point: Venezuelans get an allowance (what we call a "cupo") of $3000 a year to be spent on trips and/or internet purchases. If you want to buy something through eBay, Amazon, etc., you get a maximum of $300 out of those $3000. However, that's only if you didn't decide to spend it all on a trip or if it's not enough (as is the case when purchasing something over $300 through the internet) in which case, you're then forced to buy other people's allowances at the black market's (now sort of legal) exchange rate. So, it's much better to purchase, for example a laptop at $500 with 2 "cupos" at VEF 12/$ (official exchange rate), than to buy it locally at more than VEF 190/$ (black market).

So, a card like this one is -provided you can buy bitcoins in Bolivares or mine them, like I do- a way to avoid or alleviate all that.

Hi, I'm interested in testing/getting the card, but I live in a country which is not on the list (Venezuela). Any idea why not and if it'll be solved anytime soon?

Thanks.

we will certainly aim at providing the service for every country at some point, although it is hard to say about Venezuela for the moment. The current card issuer bank does not allow us to ship cards there, so, it is a matter of finding an alternative banking partner.

Do you think there would be high potential demand for such card in Venezuela?

As a temporary solution, can only suggest ordering the card to your relatives' or friends' address in a country from the list and nearby

Also, about the site, I was trying to register and didn't get the account activation e-mail, even when clicking on the "Lost code" link. Is registration locked, by any chance?
4  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] cudaMiner & ccMiner CUDA based mining applications [Windows/Linux/MacOSX] on: February 15, 2015, 03:42:55 PM
Hi all, I have a 670 and was wondering what mining pool (and coin) would you recommend for it, since the pool I mined in closed not long ago. I know it's outdated, but given the current economic situation in my country, it'll have to do for at least another year. Mining scrypt with cudaminer I get around 250 khash/s.

Sorry for the slight off-topic, didn't know where to ask.

7  Local / Mercado y Economía / Consulta: BTC -> ??? -> Payoneer. ¿Hay forma? on: December 08, 2014, 04:51:53 AM

Added the if statements to the code, and now it seems to be working again. Thanks!

I'll have to wait until the next sell signal to start trading again, though.

Something odd happened today: I had Gekko running in the background for like a day or so (trading in MtGox), but suddenly I got a signal to sell, even though the chart on bitcoincharts didn't give any indication to do so. When I closed and reopened it, I got things like this:

Code:

Sorry for the thread hijack, but I accumulated my vouchers and generated one for BTC 0.0196 (and have since accumulated BTC 0.0032 more). Since I'm not going to be using it, perhaps someone's interested in it here. PM if so.

As long as you are giving it away for free Smiley
Well, dailybitcoins' owner has stated before that "...you can generate redeemable voucher codes to sell or transfer funds from your advertiser's account." (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=265401.msg3038202#msg3038202), so according to that, it's allowed to sell them if you wish.

That said though, sure. Even though that amount would pay for a lot of views, it certainly would be more helpful for someone else than me right now, so yeah.

Oda.krell, thank you very much for the excellent post. I will take it into account for my own testing, but so far, it seems to hold up (using a different range for testing.) I have a quick question for you, though: when using Gekko, you state that you've set the initial number of candles to 1 for testing, but when actually using Gekko to advise/trade, what do you set that value to?

Bitcoincharts doesn't have any documentation for their charts API, so what I ended up doing to backtest was the following:

Get the chart with the timeframe that I want to backtest (for example: 5 months, hourly.)
Click the "load raw data" link below the chart.
Select the first line of the data, hold the mouse button, then press the "End" key on the keyboard.
Drag the mouse to the end of the last line, then copy the data (Ctrl+C or right-click, then Copy)
Then, paste into a new text file and modify the data to suit your backtesting program (I use Gekko, so I wrote a simple PHP script that gets each candle, formats the date to a UNIX timestamp and then returns a CSV file that Gekko can read.)

I hope that helps.
20  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Gekko - a javascript trading bot for nodejs on: August 15, 2013, 11:06:29 PM
I'm currently using Gekko to help me automate trading and follow the system that Goomboo posted. I don't know much about trading and there's still so much to learn, but I've noticed something during backtesting that I think is related to the latest posts.

When doing tests, does anyone change the number of initial candles to store? I took the H1 data from the last 5 months at BitcoinCharts (3570 candles), changed the format to what the backtester expects and tried this:

[...]

I'm wondering if there's really a need to change that setting or not. Note the huge change from 200 to 300 candles.

I am looking in to the data as to what kind of difference this makes, but do note:

The EMA method is supposed to start out with a history, the ideal case would be the complete history but since this is not practicle (and the difference decreases exponentially as you remove old history). If you don't start with a big history you aren't using pure EMA as you are not able to calculate the real EMA (a number which is built up using the complete history). Diabolicus showed the EMA difference in EMA calculation between a big and a small history.

If you are looking at the profit as a result of different histories you are just comparing different kind of EMAs (different levels of pure EMA so to say) which each other. It may the case that an EMA without an history would be the most profitable in a backtest, but it pretty hard to turn that into conclusions.

Hope that this explanation makes sense.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to reply! Let's see if I'm getting everything right. When you say "a different history" you mean to say that when I change the number of candles to retain for calculation, I'm basically evaluating a different timeframe = different history, correct?

On another note, I was looking through the source code to see if I could write a tester that would automatically find the optimum EMA values for a given timeframe, but I haven't had much time to do so.
