1  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: October 19, 2021, 07:42:42 PM

Whilst there is a delay in the action – a quick personal story…

The company I work(ed) for changed to a different retirement account custodian.  This change also caused us employees to lose our ability to select/trade stocks with our 401 and Roth funds.  Now ALL of your savings had to go into one of the custodial savings funds (made up of a basket of crappy stocks/bonds).
I had a nice nest egg that I have been saving for over 30 years in this program just waiting for the ETF and the chance to take my savings to the “next level”.    Of course I was anticipating this ETF from the day the Winkle boys first applied.   I did put a large portion of my savings into the Grayscale products and that was nice – for a short duration.
My company/custodian forced us to liquidate our brokerage selections and move into the pre-selected death spiral funds.   Of course this happened this summer when the dip occurred and I got wrecked with the move.
With the most certain bull run that was coming I really only had two choices.
1. withdraw all the retirement savings and pay the early penalty
2. quit the company – thus allowing the funds to be freed for a short stint while I shop for a new custodian (the IRS gives you 60 days to re-invest into a new qualified instrument).

I quit my job, took the retirement funds and am riding the wave for 60 days.  It has already paid for a couple years salary.

Fingers crossed – breath held.
In the infamous words of the ESPN Ocho announcer Pepper Brooks  “It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off..”

You are correct that it is a risky... strategy.. and another option would have been to take a loan from your 401k or to invest into bitcoin in separate funds.. but sure, maybe your 401k loan limit is quite low and sure maybe you do not have enough separate funds to make any kind of meaningful and significant investment into bitcoin.. so it does seem that you have given a decent amount of assessment of the risks (maybe not enough of an assessment, but you do not seem to be flying blind).. which is about as much as anyone can hope for under such desperate (seemingly highway robbery-like circumstances).

By the way, EatonABooger if you have not already gotten back into BTC with your 401k funds, then where are you with that?  You can do self-directed, but that usually would have required setting something up in advance (before quitting your job) and then you can get the 401k funds and then invest them through your self-directed system... otherwise, if you are just riding out the 60-days then it appears that you are going to have to pay the penalty (10%-ish) (and perhaps the taxes) if you do not find a authorized new custodian, no?  Might be better to completely take the funds if BTC performs well enough, too... Maybe you got into BTC in the $40ks or $50ks with those retirement (401k) funds?

1. quit job   >>  check
2. take the 100% cash-out option (except for the 20% that the custodian is required to hold back for taxes - in case I do not roll back into a plan) >>  check
3. immediately invest into BTC / ETH  >> check
4. wait out the 60 days and let the market "hopefully" moon  >>  in process
5. cash out BTC/ETH and put the funds equivalent to those in step 2 back into a qualified retirement plan that allows brokerage options (letting me pick almost anything that is on the exchanges)
6. invest the retirement funds back into Greyscale and new ETF products
7. report back to nice folk at W.O. forum with results.
8. pick out party attire for the 100K hoot nanny

Note: yes, there will be taxes on short term gains
Note: yes, one could just bail on the plan and leave the funds in BTC / ETH depending on how the market behaves - will have to look at pro/con

@Dabs:

I side with Jay on the afterlife part. I would even say that the odds of it existing are far fewer than 1%. Perhaps 0+% (the + is for being scientific). As for your bet on it existing or not and where it will land you after you die, it's an interesting argument that many people use (i.e., winning this life vs. an eternal afterlife), but, according to almost all religious texts, this mindset will not land you in a nice place after you die, so you'd better pray there's no afterlife...

Its a little bit more involved than that, I guess you could say it starts with that mindset, until you change your way of thinking and willingness to help other people and your fellow brothers in humanity. Whether the answer is yes or no, I would like to live a life where I am remembered by at least a few that I have had it okay or good or something along those lines.

Proof or evidence is a matter of faith. One can not really see it, but either you take the leap or you don't.

The mindset I prefer is one stemming from love, not fear. Criminals fear law enforcement. Good people are good just because they feel good when they do good.

There comes a time in a man's life where the world has shaken so violently, every tenant of what he previously thought of as talent or even competence melts away. A tragedy so gruesome, a burden so heavy, that the only choices that remain are A.) to have faith in a higher power and place one foot in front of the other in the hopes that benevolent power will see you through to the other side or B.) crumple to the ground and hope death is swift.
I am so glad to see that there are so many who have never truly experienced literal Hell... but wisdom dictates that we make efforts not to sever that last lifeline for the sake of those that may need it. True courage is not a lack of fear, but an acknowledgement that there are worse fears possible than the one immediately at hand, and the willful choice to face the immediate as a bulwark against the possible. It is much easier to dismiss the concept of a greater good than to ignore the existence of true evil. But once you've truly grappled with evil, it's impossible to continue forward in a world where one exists but not the other. So as we frolic through these bright days convinced that we have created our own good fortune, let us not forget that true evil does lurk in the shadows. Let us cling to that "less than 1%" just in case, because when the chips are down and at last call Lucifer himself appears to lay down 4 Kings, you just might need that Ace up your sleeve after all.

wow.  gonna re-read this a few times - very nicely done  .
putting you on my "anti-ignore" or "do-not-ignore"  list

FUD starting to fade, nothing bad has come from the G7 convention. I think we might start to slowly rise again next week. It’s been tough the last month or so hasn’t it. Most of us have lost a lot of unrealised fiat value in our net worth. I think we begin to see a trend reversal very soon. Over $40,000 by this time next week, selling pressure is exhausted, weak hands are gone. Let’s resume the bull run  Cool

[...]

But anyhow, yes, sometimes I did stumble a bit, including that there could be some difficulties to pass down the bitcoins when that mac truck hits the HODLer who has not properly written down instructions to the spouse and/or to other heirs, and surely there could also be a problem that if such good husband ONLY shares such info with such good wife, but the two of them get taken out by the same mac truck, then that might mean that such HODLer has inadequately accounted for weird things that could happen in terms of successorship, and there can be other problems or risks as well for when the house burns down, but the back-up happens to be in the house rather than in another building.. or if the other building is so god-damned close to the house, that they both burn down, and then there could be one fucked HODLer who has not adequately pee pared his/her lil selfie.

I am NOT even saying that I have these matters covered with even 95% certainty either.  I have some various systems and then back up systems and instructions, and then gosh, just going over some scenarios causes me to consider that my various systems and back up systems are not really very good for if "that random and surprise thing were to happen".. .maybe one of the reasons for sticking with bitcoin ONLY.. because shit, there are so many things to learn that it could become even MOAR complicated when adding a few shitcoins into the mix.

I haven't written any instructions anywhere, for anyone to get access to my coins if I get hit by a bus or whatever. And I don't intend to. I don't have children (yet, if ever), so I don't feel any evolutionary pressure to pass my coins on to anyone. I have lots of relatives (cousins, nieces, nephews), but, frankly, I don't see it as fair and justifiable to give them free coins just because we are genetically related.

There's no free lunch in this world, and there shouldn't be. Everyone should use their own brain and capabilities to position themselves in this world, financially, socially, intellectually. Everyone should get on their bike and work their way through life, without expecting someone else (parent, spouse, donor or whomever) to give them a free ticket.

So, if I ever die suddenly, my coins' value will effectively be spread and divided among all coiners out there. Evenly. Equally. Fairly. I feel this is fairer and more just than simply giving my coins to some spoiled brat niece or lazy nephew, just because they contain part of my DNA. I know, this sounds very misanthropic, and maybe I am a misanthrope to a degree, but, sadly, I see very few reasons not to be.

Maybe we should author a smart contract.. all your coins go to me upon death after I execute my end of the deal.   I will hold an international party for Hodlers and worthy WO members in your memory with the funds.   The party favors will be awesome and include some loaded wallets.

This reminds me of a scene/quote from season 4 of "The Walking Dead"  -  with a little modification

Rick:
They're gonna feel pretty stupid when they find out. . .

Abraham:
Find out what?

Rick:
They're screwin' with the wrong people.   That they sold those coins just before the huge move up.

I think I've seen up to Season 6.. I may have to re-watch some episodes and get back into it. It's ending at Season 9 or 10. Now there are spin-offs too.

I started watching all over again (now back on season 1).  Actually, I never finished it - I stopped somewhere in 7 or 8 when the directors/writers did not have the story go the way I thought it should.  I sort of "rage quit" on it.   I'm sure the network was very upset they lost me as a viewer.

Looks like the PI Cycle top indicator was right once again. I was suspecting a similar run to 2013. Double top with a bearish summer between. Was watching the Pi cycle top indicator for months on a daily basis. Yet all other indicators showed we are not there yet. Looks like a bearish summer indeed.

no no no no no no no no no no no no no

stop that negative vibe this instant !

Bought a physical painting today. Feels much better than the NFT hype.

I'm parlaying part of my Bitcoin holdings into an absolutely bonkers AFA Graded Star Wars Stormtrooper and Mandalorian collection.

Action figures are sorta like paintings, no?

I have always wanted a Han Solo in carbonite (this post has rekindled that old need).  I think I will purchase one - to the ebay machine ...

By the By today is my 8th Year Anniversary of finding out about Bitcoin! April 13th, 2013!

Wall Observer Started on April 16th, 2013!

Quite the wild ride!

Here was my date for registry:
Date Registered:    May 24, 2013

but I was lurking for a few weeks before deciding to register.

My claim to fame is that I was reading the "HODL" post live .. well, just a few minutes after it was posted.   I witnessed the term "HODL" being born.   I will always have that.

Full Disclosure: Waiting for funds to clear so I can clean out my balance on the exchange, and loading up for a small sell order @ $60k USD for further funding of Ranchero Lawblaw. Hoping it happens in this tax-quarter.

Was going to wait for $75k and sell a larger chunk, but purpose-selling at $60k for the ranch build is justifiable to me.

Rick is already starting to stress out about cost overruns, and I'll be Goddamned if I'm going to let dude cheap out on my dream ranch-home build, so, yeah. Gotta smack that little bitch with my wallet.dat again.

"Yes. I want a fucking fishing dock. I don't see the problem spending $15k to have one properly built, goddamnit. Yes, I understand a new high quality fence will likely set us back $50k-$60k around the perimeter. Yes. I expect the bridge engineering and construction to cost north of $100k" sorta shit.

We have problems.

nothin wrong with a few "first world" problems my man   : )

I realized, that I only will get 4.5 btc for my car (okay, maybe 4 BTC I have to remove 20%, because it's used)... Last week it was 5... Cry

Wow, 4 BTC? What kind of car do you have?

My car is worth way under 1 BTC...  Cheesy

I "leased" me an Audi SQ8. I own a small company. So leasing makes sense here.  (btw. not the RS - because I thought the tax department had a problem with it, had I talked earlier to my tax accountant, then it would be the RS Q8). So I didn'T spend any bitcoin on it. The first car I will spend Bitcoins on it, will be the Urus... Wink

speaking of...
the other day I had to go into town for some business.  We had just had a few inches of snow and some ice.   What did I see parked on the street?  I bright blue Urus !!! it was the first one I had ever seen in the flesh.  Man, was that a beautiful car.   It had been driving around in the slush and salty roads.   This was the type of day that I would look for my worst car to drive.  Could that have been their "sacrificial" car that they did not care about?  I really wanted to do some interviewing and understand the situation.   Maybe their mclarens or classic muscle cars just could not drive in the snow and ice and this was the only vehicle they had with 4 wheel drive.
