421  Economy / Reputation / Re: Should Ratimov be in DT1? on: November 22, 2023, 02:03:37 PM
If I remember correctly, The Cryptovator changed his username twice in a short period. Still, theymos has proven that he follows events on the forum, although it does not participate in most of the discussions.
Your memory is correct.

The user got permission and support to change display name three times. Coolcryptovator, COOLCRYPTOVATOR and The Cryptovator. theymos dislikes if we mentioned people change usernames for privacy reasons but the user did it because of impersonators, hence I think it's not wrong to mention this here (but still, it is offtopic so I will stop here).

Display Name changed from "COOLCRYPTOVATOR" to "The Cryptovator" | Tnx Theymos

Hi all, what means 2e-8 BTC total income???
Could you share where you get it, on what platform, please?

That looks a bit tricky and can cause a user makes mistakes and loses money. I don't like any platform displays a user balance like this.

Btw, you can take this chance to learn more about Bitcoin units.

423  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk's important historic changes on: November 22, 2023, 01:24:25 PM
Today I occasionally find this interesting post. It is from a donator member and I am not sure all information is correct. I share it here as a note and maybe theymos or Cryus can share some more information about forum history.

As in OP, I highlighted that I still don't know when Cyrus became a forum admin.

No. There was also Sirius which helped Satoshi immensely with the Bitcoin project in 2009. My knowledge on the history is limited because I was new at the time, but I believe they both trusted theymos to take care of it in 2010. Sirius gave control of the domains to Cobra. theymos and Cyrus run the forum now. That link appears to be a bit behind the times as BadBear isn't an administrator anymore, he doesn't appear to be even a moderator. He last posted in late 2016 and his account was last active on here in spring 2017.

Satoshi left the project over 7 years ago and there's no point in identifying him anymore. Sirius, who was responsible for porting the code to Linux and getting a lot of early interest (even more than Satoshi) eventually decided to leave the project in the hands of those who were interested in taking it further. The forum grew a lot from 2010 to 2013 and even though the signal to noise ratio hasn't always been the best, theymos and Cyrus have done a great job given the limitations of the software. theymos also runs the subreddit which has grown quite well over the years.
424  Other / Meta / Re: Any 50 BTC donor still active here? on: November 22, 2023, 12:52:22 PM
Get a list of those members that was given by LoyceV.
It looks like users lose their Donator status when they get banned. See Alwaysmining's profile. I didn't know that.
I remember theymos wrote somewhere that for some solid reasons, he can take down a VIP or donator status. Let me find it for you.

Still finding but not find it yet. Probably my memory is about honorable VIP member that can be taken down by theymos. For actually donated VIP members, the badge stays forever.

About the banned case you listed, is it a glitch?
I really believe it is a glitch because logically a banned VIP or donator account can not lose the badge. A banned account can be better than a scammer account.

See.
My current policy is to not remove scammers from https://bitcointalk.org/donate.html , so you can compare that list to the list of scammers. Note that I also don't update names on https://bitcointalk.org/donate.html when the names change. For example, "Goat" is in the donate.html list, but his forum name is "Chaang Noi (Goat) ช้างน้อย".

Quote
I'd guess that there are 2-3 VIP scammers and 3-6 Donator scammers.
The fun facts about % of scammers among VIP and Donator members are higher later. Details
Graphs made in 2019.

Meanwhile, I have this.
Maybe they didn't donate 50 BTC but were gifted the VIP status because of their contribution to Bitcoin and the forum.

Right. I posted about this somewhere when I did it.

IIRC MagicalTux also got VIP without paying 50 BTC because he contributed significant resources in other ways.

MagicalTux got "free" VIP status for hosting the forum for a long time, too. I think that him plus Hal are the only free donator statuses I gave out. You'd have to do something pretty extraordinary to convince me to give out another free one.

I don't see any point in donating 5 BTC now and then 5 BTC later. You won't get Donator status until you've donated a total of at least 10 BTC. It'd be better for you to earn interest on the 5 BTC somewhere until you're ready to pay 10 BTC. The forum isn't in need of money.

I gave Hal a VIP tag even though he didn't donate because he is nearly as much of a Bitcoin legend as Satoshi IMO. He received the first-ever Bitcoin transaction, and he's been contributing to Bitcoin since before 0.1 was released.

Some honorable VIP members, like Hal Finney, not in the donation page.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=42942
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2134

As a Donator I can tell you that we have our own exclusive section of the forum (which controversially staff members are also able to participate in) and there are a few Donators such as myself that occasionally post things in there. A quick glance at that section looks like TradeFortress was that last VIP to post anything in there.

It is a confirmation for OgNasty's post above.
There is now a forum section accessible only to donators/VIPs.
425  Other / Meta / Re: Any 50 BTC donor still active here? on: November 21, 2023, 02:23:56 PM
It's my old thread, not updated recent years but you will get some information like their new usernames/ display names that are different than initial usernames.

Stats on active & merit status of Donators & VIPs

A painful fact is many VIP/ Donator member accounts got hacked, changed hands, turned to scammers or left the forum.

427  Economy / Gambling / Re: YoCa.sh Multichain Casino | No Deposits, Decentralized, No Kyc, Instant Payouts on: November 21, 2023, 06:24:00 AM
Welcome YoCa.sh to Bitcointalk.

Your team made a right decision to join Bitcointalk that is a biggest forum for Bitcoin community and for cryptocurrency gambling industry too. Many casinos have their announcement threads here, from very old casinos to new ones like YoCa.sh.

As a representative of Yoca.sh brand, the representative who handle the OP account must master forum rules.

Buying a Copper membership is good, first your team support the forum and second with this, your account will be able to post and display images for your announcement graphics.

In case your team want to advertise your casino with like a signature campaign or more marketing type, you can ping me through PM for more details. Glad if I can help your team with it.

I saw your team have bug bounty, buy back and burn program, looks good to build up your platform, secure it and show your team commitment to build the token.

430  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is your solution to pay less Fee ? on: November 19, 2023, 04:35:19 PM
However, as a disclaimer, I know it's easier to give advises than following them: in the past few weeks I didn't need to spend much, so my advice is based on my past actions (it's not the first time the fees go up "too much"; it's even not the worse situation we've ever had).
People must go through such expensive transaction fee time, experience it to understand that they will need to have different kind of money and different plans. Because life is not smooth, transaction fees are not cheap forever on Bitcoin blockchain or any altcoin blockchain.

They must have a little bit money in Bitcoin, stable coin or cash. Make sure they will always have money to use with different ways and don't waste their money by expensive fees.

432  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Massive influx of scammers activity during the bull season. on: November 19, 2023, 04:00:37 PM
For some reason I got this taught from a discussion I was partly involved in where the persons were all complaining on how they lost so much during the bull market and it made me wonder how possible is this if one should be able to avoid so many  factors that posses these results of losses.
They lost big because of many reasons but some biggest factors are
  • They joined the market when the bull run is nearly over. So they bought at top and consequently panic sold at lower prices or bottom prices.
  • They did not take profit and get their initial capital back to be safe. They won big, spent more money with hope to win bigger, at the end, lost big.
It's not only because they spent money into scam projects but even projects did not die in a bear market, they will lose like 90% or more from their portfolio all time high because most of altcoins usually have 90+% loss in a bear market.
433  Other / Meta / Re: Greek subforum here needs moderation on: November 17, 2023, 09:27:45 AM
The Greek subforum in bitcointalk currently has no moderator. There used to be a single moderator but I guess he became busy with life and gave the forum up.

If theymos would be kind enough to assign a moderator, I can say that I volunteer for the role.
You just woke up recent weeks and you don't know that earlier this year, there is a Request for the moderator position in Greek board.

Theymos must see it is needed and there is a procedure to get that position. Do you think you meet any criteria mentioned there?

New moderator needed (Korean)
Who is able and willing to moderate the Politics & Society section?
Report a lot of posts and be a very active member of the community and theymos may ask you eventually.
There will only be one moderator.

Report history is the most important consideration for a moderator candidate. Over the forum's many years, relatively "newbie" members with good report histories have consistently done much better as mods than veteran, well-respected members with poor report histories. That said, not all reports are equal, so a simple report count doesn't tell the whole story. Also, in addition to report histories, it's necessary to consider factors such as the ability of the candidate to be neutral, their trustworthiness, etc. It's also nice to choose a moderator who people generally already trust/respect, but sometimes this is outweighed by other factors.

If a poll is created, I will not completely ignore the results, but I will also not use it as a primary influence. I'm more interested in arguments people have for or against certain candidates.

Here are the top non-bad report counts for the German sections over the last 6 months, along with the German boards which those reports covered (broader coverage being better).
434  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Senator introduce"keep your coin act" to protect right to use self-hosted wallet on: November 17, 2023, 06:50:07 AM
The junior Senator of the United States, Senator Ted Budd (R-NC) Introduces 'Keep Your Coins Act' to Protect Right to Use Self-Hosted Wallets
These act was introduced to allow individuals to maintain the custudy of the coins or cryto currencies in there self-hosted wallet. He further stated that the reason for this "Keep Your Coins act" would protect an individual’s right to conduct transactions with cryptocurrency assets without the need to utilize a third-party intermediary. And the reason behind this is a prior to FTX collapse that it would save people from third party risk.
Needing a third party, middle man to confirm your transaction, to complete a trade, to play as an Escrow is nothing wrong.

It is only wrong if you choose a bad one to use. Bitcoin with its Peer-to-Peer transaction design and its strong, decentralized network, can not be attack (in practice) and no censorship is a good third party, a middle man for you.

There is chance for a network 51% attack but cost is bigger than benefit and today with bots to nearly instantly detect wrong things on-chain, many full nodes globally to detect suspicious things, such attacks will hardly to gain profit.

Lastly but in my opinion, most important, don't read any news from bitcoin [dot] com. You have bunches of websites to read news, don't read news from that site. Because it is from Roger Ver team, a scam team of Bitcoin Cash. You don't want to be a free shiller for them, do you?

They only changed to Green theme after failing to say Bitcoin Cash is Bitcoin.

436  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Wallets on Coinbase on: November 16, 2023, 12:56:29 AM
It seems that you are confusing the terms.
A non-custodial wallet isn't necessarily a hardware wallet. Any wallet that gives you full control over your fund is called a non-custodial wallet.
Custodial vs Non-custodial wallets. It is a topic from a newbie, years ago but it can help OP to differentiate between two wallet types.

Quote
You don't have to purchase a non-custodial wallet. There are many good wallets that can be downloaded freely.
There are many open source non-custodial wallets and because they are open source, they are free to download and use. Those wallets are reproducible with open source codes too.

https://walletscrutiny.com/
https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet

Quote
If you can't afford to buy a hardware wallet, go for an open-source trustworthy non-custodial software wallet. If you can run your software wallet on an airgapped device, it would give you the same security as a hardware wallet.
Some open source non custodial wallets have features to create Multisig or cold storage wallets too.

If OP plans to use hardware wallets, open source ones are listed there

437  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How much safe Electrum 2FA is? on: November 16, 2023, 12:35:20 AM
Electrum wallet is an SPV wallet and despite there's a need for personal information if using the wallet.
No personal information needed to use Electrum wallet.

It's non custodial wallet and you can simply download the wallet, verify it and turn of the Internet connection before creating your wallet to use. I mean creating your wallet offline or best on an airgap device!

Airgap is best if you can have a device for this task: a clean device, secure OS and offline.

438  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Guide] Avoid These Kinds of Scams on: November 14, 2023, 11:38:51 AM
Last Night I was using My mobile Phone and i stumble upon a website which is kind of exchange where we can buy or sell cryptocurrencies even we can make transaction using this website.
How did you stumble on that website?

Who did give you know about the exchange and its link to visit?

If you have to create your account, on a centralized platform, it is a first risky step. It is warned many times as one of best ways to lose your bitcoins.
Reminder: do not keep your money in online accounts

On top of that, you received a very good offer that is too good to be true. 0.2 BTC is a very big money and it is impossible you can easily get it as a gift and think more, they provide it to many people not only you.

Lastly, you made a bad mistake, I see your email address. You blurred something on the screenshot but did not blur what you need to do most.

Blur it and attach a new image, please.
439  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: BTC private key generates wrong address. on: November 14, 2023, 11:33:30 AM
Hello, please I need some assistance. In 2016, we used python to generate a Bitcoin private key and then imported the key into the electrum Android app, sent btc there and forgot about it.
I read through the thread and did not see any mention about possible mistake by OP, that Electrum wallet supported Legacy address in the past like 2016 but they disabled Legacy address creation with newest Electrum version.

With newest versions, they only allow to create Segwit addresses if a user does not know deeply technical steps to create Legacy address via command line.

Is this the problem of OP?

https://www.reddit.com/r/Electrum/comments/mku14h/how_do_you_create_legacy_wallet_from_command_line/

Quote
Now, for the past one year, I have been trying to recover that address but the private key doesn’t generate the same address anymore. I have used python to generate 5 different legacy addresses but all are different from the very first one.
Like LoyceV said, it is impossible. One private key, one public key and one public address.

Being paranoid with fake apps on Google Play?

Protect yourself from fake wallet software (guide)
The paranoid user's security guide for using Electrum safely.

People got fake apps because they don't visit an official website to get download links. They also don't verify wallet, PGP key of developers. Only download an application and use it immediately.

They will have more chance to get fake applications if they directly search in Google Play.

Some websites to check wallet applications and I mean for double checking. Verify PGP key is most important.
