21  Economy / Auctions / Re: [Launch] The Million Bitcoin Homepage - Real-time pixel advertising with Bitcoin on: February 19, 2014, 07:08:03 PM
Interesting. Could you please be more specific.

This soft launch has steered the path, I'm in the process of implementing some key changes and in a few days I will be making an announcement regarding the site.
22  Economy / Auctions / Re: [Launch] The Million Bitcoin Homepage - Real-time pixel advertising with Bitcoin on: February 17, 2014, 12:17:21 PM
That's to cover a single medium instance. Elastic load balancing would be a better way to reduce expenses by scaling in a more granular fashion, but this particular project doesn't justify using it.

Laugh all you like, but you've just joined the immature crowd by doing so. Well done.

Thank you! Cheesy

Thanks, I need good luck.

I've spent a lot of money on hosting, SSL certificates, and advertising.

You host your domain with amazon (which includes the SSL certificates) - that's cheap.   Where are you advertising?

This reeks of someone taking a years old idea and trying to grab some btc off it.

Sent to a "random charity"?  Hmmm

Also... wat?

Domain/SSL cert is from GoDaddy, servers from Amazon. How is that cheap... and yes... random charity indeed...

from schema.sql...

Code:
CREATE TABLE charity_addresses(
id SERIAL PRIMARY KEY,
title CHAR(256) NOT NULL,
address CHAR(34) NOT NULL,
created_at TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE NOT NULL DEFAULT now()
);

CREATE UNIQUE INDEX charity_addresses_address_unique_index ON charity_addresses(address);

INSERT INTO charity_addresses(title, address) VALUES('Sean''s Outpost', '1M72Sfpbz1BPpXFHz9m3CdqATR44Jvaydd');
INSERT INTO charity_addresses(title, address) VALUES('IndySci.org', '1DxCiQM3c3h4T7MpRtrkzfBrNPQtz3qbv7');
INSERT INTO charity_addresses(title, address) VALUES('Bitcoin 100', '1BTC1oo1J3MEt5SFj74ZBcF2Mk97Aah4ac');

and from charity_payout worker process the query is...

Code:
SELECT address FROM charity_addresses OFFSET random()*(SELECT count(*)-1 FROM charity_addresses) LIMIT 1

Now please get lost.

God this is really getting boring, please behave more constructively... instead of posting your vacuous and destructive criticism.

If I was purely in it for the money I'd say "0% to charity and 0% for users to win back", that's not the case here.

I genuinely care about fair redistribution of wealth in the world, I made this site as a microcosm/metaphor of Bitcoin itself, that was the underlying principle. It is not your average pixel advertising site, this one blows the rest out the water!

Look at the clickthrough rate so far, it's damn cheap compared to any other ads (facebook, reddit) you get, plus you know that your audience is bitcoin-centric... that does have value.

Trying to "grab" money would mean a cheap shot at it, instead I've put months of work and achieved a very polished result. I'm proud of it, none of the empty criticism has put a dent in my pride (but it does offend me, hence my passionate reply).

The website is to act as a portal for many Bitcoin businesses, small and large alike. They may regulate how much they wish to spend on advertising (by the block lifetime), and if they want to spend less can buy blocks off to the edges of the map. They are given instant and real-time feedback on block clicks and visits, which would help them determine whether a continued campaign is necessary.

My project has the capability to support: website/app developers, radio shows, youtube channels, sex workers (Bitcoin does have a strong liberalist movement behind it after all), anyone wanting to link to their portfolio/resume, etc.

Natural curiosity will lead to much of the grid being explored, once populated this will be very fun indeed. Any block which is spitting out ? icons is being inspected by the current visitors.

Hosting is not "cheap", I'm paying $100/month for it so that it can absorb spikes in traffic. I've spent money on the domain, SSL certs, the CDN traffic to delivery js/css/fonts/images, and also a lot of my time. I've spent money on the advertising campaigns.

All this and I am not here demanding anything back other than basic decency and respect. Nobody is forcing you to use my website...

So go away, and don't come back posting here until you have something of value to say.
26  Economy / Exchanges / Re: www.BITSTAMP.net Bitcoin exchange site for USD/BTC on: February 14, 2014, 01:42:58 PM
w00t! At last some bitcoin-positive news!
27  Economy / Auctions / Re: [Launch] The Million Bitcoin Homepage - Real-time pixel advertising with Bitcoin on: February 14, 2014, 01:33:56 PM
What u saying brah!?

I want my 4.7% of all bitcoins that ever will be!

Tongue

(srsly face: The aim was never to make $1m, nowhere near that, I'll be happy if I reach my 50BTC and manage to give 10 or 20 BTC away to the charities)
28  Economy / Services / Re: Bitcoin 100: Developed Specifically for Non-Profits on: February 14, 2014, 01:15:49 PM
Hi,

Not here to spam/promote, just want to say that I am in support of Bitcoin100

I've just put this live https://the-million-bitcoin-homepage.com/

All of our takings are split 70/30 - 30% back to the users and charity. It pays out to Sean's outpost, IndySci and Bitcoin100.

Hopefully we can encourage people to advertise and play (they can win Bitcoin back also) and then should start seeing money firing out to the 3 aforementioned charities Cheesy

Thanks!
29  Economy / Auctions / Re: [Launch] The Million Bitcoin Homepage - Real-time pixel advertising with Bitcoin on: February 14, 2014, 12:37:47 PM
All the example blocks I put up have expired also and so the 3 blocks up there are genuine purchases.

I was quite pleased to see them go in, easily pleased clearly.
30  Economy / Auctions / Re: [Launch] The Million Bitcoin Homepage - Real-time pixel advertising with Bitcoin on: February 14, 2014, 12:19:44 PM
Please note that I sent 0.1 BTC up to prepopulate with some example blocks, so my earnings are actually ~ 0.08 BTC right now.

Thought I'd say that before people start crying "GREED!"

20% to charity and 10% to the user is quite fair IMO.
31  Economy / Auctions / Re: [Launch] The Million Bitcoin Homepage - Real-time pixel advertising with Bitcoin on: February 14, 2014, 12:11:38 PM
Thanks, I need good luck.

I wish I could have grabbed, themillionbitcoinhomepage.com but instead I could only get the-million-bitcoin-homepage.com

I've spent a lot of money on hosting, SSL certificates, and advertising.

There is nothing in the prize balance, yet, because more needs to be spent.

Currently my reserve balances stand like this:

block_earnings | 0.12661733 BTC
charity           | 0.03617650 BTC
gold               | 0.01808816 BTC

Charity payout happens at 1 BTC, gold will be split into 0.01 BTC blocks when it goes over 0.1 BTC

I was hoping the thought of donating to charity would have been enough, but clearly not. It's good value for money advertising given the clickthrough rate on the current ads.

Really??!!  Shocked
33  Economy / Auctions / Re: [Launch] The Million Bitcoin Homepage - Real-time pixel advertising with Bitcoin on: February 14, 2014, 09:04:44 AM
Yeah there have been a million clones of the million dollar homepage.

Ours blows them all out the water!

Thanks,

Yes, the domain stinks. First the dashes are not very nice (was well aware of this but all others were taken), second the name *is* horrible (The intention is to leverage the original million dollar branding).

Wanted this to attract casual users as well as advertisers, and am still hoping it gets use and money is sent to the listed charities (Sean's outpost, IndySci, Bitcoin100).

Again, am open to bids to license the site, I can very easily/quickly spin up new instances of it and switch the branding. Currently the upload code is tied to an s3 bucket (plus cloudfront for CDN), but this could be adapted to another hosting environment.

Currently have

Two reddit self-service ads: http://www.reddit.com/?ad=t3_1xov9d & http://www.reddit.com/?ad=t3_1xljl0
Twitter spampain: https://twitter.com/BTCMillions
Facebook spampain: https://www.facebook.com/The.Million.Bitcoin.Homepage

Open to offers.
35  Economy / Marketplace / Re: [Launch] The Million Bitcoin Homepage - Real-time pixel advertising with Bitcoin on: February 13, 2014, 04:13:10 PM
A single pseudonymous entity claims responsibility for Bitcoin and nobody has a problem with that. I am the sole creator of this project and I have every right to display that fact to users here.

This is my creation and if I can pick up work by demonstrating my skills then that's an added bonus. I actively want to code/develop for BTC, instead of working down the more traditional routes.

Correct, a team could have done it in a shorter time but only with adequate oversight, teams have the ability to get unfocused/lost easily. In this case "if you want it done right, do it yourself" applied heavily.

For a single individual I've achieved a lot. Why don't you log in, have a look around, deposit/withdraw (you can scan the withdrawal address using your webcam and mobile device), then maybe try buying a block to advertise your own pixel advertising site (whoa! let's get meta on everyone, why not!?).

Joking aside, you'll get a feel for how thorough I've been if you actually just try it out...

Another sale came in today (https://the-million-bitcoin-homepage.com/block/10) and traffic is double what it was yesterday. Given the price paid and number of clicks/visits on the blocks so far, plus the fact that the audience is going to be Bitcoin oriented, I'd say that's good value for money.

Soon people will realise this and it will gain flight. The price is right.

Early days but it's picking up: https://i.imgur.com/hMbXkwg.png

... To the moon??

Cheers mate, glad you recognise the efforts.

I've spent a bit already on hosting/ssl certificates/advertisements... but I'm not expecting anything back...

Just hopeful that it gets some use.
37  Economy / Auctions / Re: [Launch] The Million Bitcoin Homepage - Real-time pixel advertising with Bitcoin on: February 13, 2014, 08:17:55 AM
It does indeed.
38  Economy / Marketplace / Re: [Launch] The Million Bitcoin Homepage - Real-time pixel advertising with Bitcoin on: February 13, 2014, 07:51:50 AM
I'm investing no further money into this aside from ads and hosting.

A rebrand is not garaunteed to net any profit, it's full steam ahead. News piece is necessary.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/4585026.stm

This would make a good column filler. They can easily write about his calm.com venture and where he went since The Million Dollar Homepage, how his idea still inspires people today.

From that you'd have a bunch of bitcoin businesses benefiting, charities benefiting, everyone benefiting.

My cut is 70%, that leaves 30% going back to users and charity. More noble than Primedice I'd say.

Even getting myself some paid development work would be great, that's why I'm tired of these destructive comments "good luck with that"... it does nothing for the community and is exactly the type of crap holding Bitcoin back (as does the unoriginal Primedice, rehash of Satoshidice, which serves to do nothing more than slowly suck away cash from idiots who use the damn thing).
39  Economy / Marketplace / Re: [Launch] The Million Bitcoin Homepage - Real-time pixel advertising with Bitcoin on: February 13, 2014, 07:31:12 AM
And yes, I can take that criticism well because it is fair and you make fair points.

Again, it was about learning and developing skills, so that's why I didn't use off the shelf stuff... I did use jQuery timeago and jcrop, fontawesome and a few other things.

The map itself was custom, so I didn't want to use any other tweening things out there. Plus they don't give you control over friction coefficients in the way I wanted.

Also I think many are still using -walletnotify or -blocknotify, which is ugly. This comes straight from bitcoind over zmq/rabbitmq...

I think if I promote it correctly I can net more than 1BTC, but less than 50BTC

Wink

Also its not a case of "just use a plugin", the requirements were very specific and I can't work within the constraints/limitations of any out-the-box map stuff... I wrote this for speed, I know the limitations of browsers and how to overcome them, so did.

If this were to have 10,000 images... it would operate very smoothly still.

https://www.facebook.com/The.Million.Bitcoin.Homepage

and

https://twitter.com/BTCMillions

are up and I've reddit and facebook promotions running.

Even if it fails, I've at least brought about some extra exposure to Bitcoin to the masses, which is what I hoped to do...

You can encourage a whole generation of entrepreneurs off the back of Alex's story, and to do so again in the Bitcoin space is not a bad thing.
40  Economy / Marketplace / Re: [Launch] The Million Bitcoin Homepage - Real-time pixel advertising with Bitcoin on: February 13, 2014, 06:59:51 AM
Do you know what a differential equation is? Or how to solve one? I did so for the map slide (basic friction equation).

How about what a quadtree is, or why they're useful in this context? No didn't think so. I have implemented a fast javascript quadtree for this. The map code makes extensive use of this and doesn't have a single unnecessary <canvas/> element in the dom at one time.

A bitcoin payment processing system, using a custom fork (fredan's ZeroMQ) which I've maintained over the recent months - to provide realtime notification of deposits and when they are confirmed. Of all the bitcoin websites out there, I'd say mine is the nicest from a user's perspective (no refreshing required, all over websocket/socket.io).

Wrote a JavaScript library (to be opensourced)... getImage.js - which provides various methods for image upload: choose file via <input/>, clipboard copypaste, webcam, dragdrop, url...

And more, I'm sure, that I wont waste more time listing.

I did all this in the hope that people would either recognise my skills, or use it to promote their business and Bitcoin itself (because imo it's the only implementation newsworthy as a reboot of Alex Tew's original website). So far I've just had destructive comments and only recognition from programmers who realise the care and effort that went into this.

If this takes off, Sean's Outpost / IndySci and the other charities added would benefit directly. Is that not a good story for Bitcoin??

Yet still people are either too tight with their money to try the thing out (you can for < $1) or just downright destructive that they feel the need to comment without any purpose other than a put-down.

Again, you really show your intellect and maturity in doing so, well done mate... well done.
