It doesn't look like there is a way to import a wallet using a private key in the Murraycoin client (I have the Windows version), or is it right in front of my face and I just missed it?

That's definitely one of the sections I want to make more intuitive in the next release of the wallet. Right now, you have to do it the same way as with Bitcoin-QT/etc - via the RPC interface. If we could have a 1-click (or in reality probably 3-click... but 1-click seems to be the buzz phrase regardless of how many clicks) way to import them, it would certainly make our physical distribution strategy more intuitive.

Here is how you do it now:

Help -> Debug window -> Console

If you have a password on your wallet (which I'm sure you do) you will need to temporarily unlock it first by typing:

walletpassphrase "yourpassword" 180

With the "180" simply being how many seconds you want it to remain unlocked for (just needs to be long enough to run the next command... I always default to 180 but it doesn't really matter).

Then you type:

importprivkey "yoursuperlongprivatekeystring" "label-here"

The label is optional, of course. If you are on a slow computer, you can also add rescan=false at the end of the previous command and simply let the blockchain do the work for you. It allows for a smoother import and I will run some testing on it but I may make it the default on the new wallet import feature with the option to check the "rescan" box instead. Just to clarify, if you don't want to do the rescan the command would look like this:

importprivkey "yoursuperlongprivatekeystring" "label-here" rescan=false

That's all there is to it... but obviously not very intuitive for the average person. This is one of the reasons so many people are using CoinBase/etc for simple import functionality - this is complicated and borderline scary for people who aren't comfortable with technology. Honestly I never thought it made sense to put this under "Help" or "Debug window" but I stuck with what the new Bitcoin Core was using for consistency. We now know that consistency is great and all... but it can't hurt to go above and beyond. Obviously the average Joe who wants to go import their paper Murraycoin wallet would think those above steps are pretty ridiculous.

I'm still kicking around the possibility of an algorithm change and another fork as well... which of course are both things we will want to do as soon as possible. My concern is simply ensuring the blockchain is secure and somewhat consistent speed-wise - right now it's just being treated as another hit-and-run Scrypt-N coin which is why it's struggling on the exchange - not a lot of exciting news getting crypto people buying on the exchanges... but still profit to be made here-and-there form the hit-and-run crowd. My concerns with merge-mining/etc are that we are then tied to another currency which, despite the advantages of consistency, I'm not sure it makes sense for Murraycoin. I could easily rebuild some new QT wallets with the simple import feature and a modified look... but it would be cool to kill a few birds with one stone. This is something we will have to continue to discuss.

I wish you all the best and only posted this morning hoping that a few people might be happy to learn I'm still alive and still working behind the scenes. It's definitely the best way to operate - considerably less stressful and dealing with far fewer idiots. They get bored and move on to the next shiny thing and I have no desire to deal with those types of people. I can work at my own pace and when stuff is done it's done.

Thanks for the good wishes.
But we are not well!
You know why!
What did you do?
A big nothing!
Suckers, liars and lower people!
You are responsible for our losses and disappointments.
To burn to hell.
Cheaters!

First of all, everything you said is ridiculous if not downright false. Second, what did you do? I'm confused because I have about $15,000 (spent) worth of OctoCoins I bought sitting here and I've invested hundreds of hours into communication, development, and even assisted the thinning team after their funding was pulled with the fork/etc. What have you done to make me rich? Why don't you owe me anything? I fail to understand the logic here. Because I actually chipped in and put time and money into helping out... only to lose thousands of dollars, receive hate mail, threats, etc - I had to file a police report over this crap. I'm an adult with a job, family, and life - you are an assclown. I'm officially done posting here - only did so because there are a handful of people who might appreciate it. I wasn't here to please the morons with the pitchforks who lack the slightest shred of logic.

SHOW US ONE SHRED OF PROOF.

you talk big, but you evade all questions, and show us nothing but talk talk talk talk talk.

SHOW US ONE SHRED OF PROOF.

so far everything you've claimed has not been corroborated by any outside sources, infact the angel investors you spoke of have NEVER HEARD of octocoin.

SHOW US ONE SHRED OF PROOF.

Proof of what? You want me to post a dick pic? I have no idea where they got their funding other than AoA was mentioned numerous times on phone calls regarding FusionHash acquisition inquiries. There are over 200 individual angel investors in the AoA - it's an investment group not a venture capital firm. They connect investors with entrepreneurs - they don't force every single member to fork over a check when they decide to make an investment. Investors join and leave all the time! There have probably been over 500 angel investors in and out over the past 2 years. I can tell you right now I have never received a check from these guys outside of some crossover between the investors that put small amounts of money into Murraycoin. I know very little about the AoA other than what I've been told, what was eluded to, and what I gathered from the AoA website. I talk big? I have invested over 1000 hours of my time into crypto projects in the past 18 months - besides posting on forums, what have you done? I acquired assets and mining hardware from FusionHash that cost 5 times more to operate than they return and have virtually a $0 resale value. I thought I was acquiring a top-notch crypto exchange as well... but in this market it wouldn't even make sense to attempt to operate it. I've lost tens of thousands of dollars and I now have millions of 888 and MRY. I am still doing things for both behind the scenes... but as I've stated before it's been relegated to a hobby. In this uncertain bear market, there's not even a guarantee I get a return on my investment. Unlike financial investors who can cut their losses and walk away when the chips are down... I can't afford to throw away my time.

There is a lot of potential here, for sure, but this really isn't a great time for altcoins in general - we need a bull market and we need new financial interest to help fund projects again so we can bring in real dev teams/etc to create. When there is money to be made there is money to spend - otherwise, things will continue moving at an insanely slow pace. Do I regret getting involved in this stuff? Sure - I've lost thousands and thousands of dollars and countless hours of sleep, energy, and time all to have a bunch of self-entitled sociopaths formulate some insane fictitious conspiracy theory where I'm living like a king off your money on my yacht a la Bernie Madoff. The only difference between you and me is that I actually put time and effort into attempting to help when the ship started to sink and I went down with the ship harder than anybody. I may have bitten off more than I could chew once gravity and insanity started to tear apart altcoins and the talent and money vanished... and I paid for it financially more than everybody else here combined... but at least I can say I didn't give up easy.

I honestly can't believe you ridiculous this is - it's a full facepalm. Alright... I'm really out.

Brian - we will sync up soon. Been a busy couple weeks in my non-crypto world but we definitely need to get everybody on the same page. You make valid points and the best path isn't always the path of least resistance. While I maintain our marketing efforts will have a much higher impact if the general public grows more excited about bitcoin again (think of mechanical advantage: Fout/Fin) it is still important to continue moving now. When time and funding is limited the strategy needs to change but progress needs to continue. I wasn't implying we sit around twiddling our thumbs until the market starts moving in the right direction - I was simply implying that some of the costlier and/or more time-consuming marketing efforts might be best put into place during a bull market. We are planning on doing a lot of great things... but without the interest and volume in general (and without unlimited time) a strategy needs to be in place somewhere in the middle. The exchange value really doesn't play much of a role in the big picture - real people buying and trading MRY in currency they understand will give it a mass appeal few, if any, cryptocurrencies have achieved. Once we have created our market the sky is the limit; people looking to buy and dump to make a quick buck make up the majority of this forum and have no place in a well-designed ecosystem or community - they are the reason altcoins are almost all dead or dying. We will separate from them - you have ideas and I have ideas. As I said before, I have communicated with some bright people over the past year and this is hands-down the sharpest community in the altcoin world. This community is also a lot larger than it appears - there are Murraycoin enthusiasts all over the place that simply aren't crypto-nerds. There are a lot of people who have bought MRY (from me and others) who have never even heard of Cryptsy or this forum and they are excited just to be a part of it - more of that would also be great. This is certainly a target market in my eyes which is the reason I'm still working on the physical Murraycoin cards/etc. The problem in the eyes of the people here is that they want everything to happen overnight - there is only so much time in the day and only so much of that can be devoted to projects like this. Murraycoin has barely been around for a year but in this world that means it's time to hit the panic button - it's insane and it sucks! Most people here don't understand business in general and are too young and/or inexperienced to really grasp the concept of a simple currency, even - it's been a frustrating task. Everybody wants things to move more quickly but you have to be realistic. It's also important to remember that most of those people will contribute nothing significant to any of these projects - they think they have done us a favor by buying some coins and now we owe them something. I refuse to adjust course for those types of people - I want the investors to make money but not at the expense of proper execution. Quality takes time and sometimes things move slowly! When the dust settles and most of this other crap is forgotten Murraycoin will, at the very least, hold a place in cryptocurrency history - I guarantee it. Everyone who sticks around will be glad they did in the end.

I definitely agree we need to discuss actions, plans, timelines, and deadlines and light the Murraycoin fire again. We all realize the potential that exists here... and it's definitely important not to come to a complete stand-still (which we haven't despite appearing to many we have) - the real value definitely remains in getting this to the masses and getting the right people involved and both of those items are linked in various ways. You have been a big part of the former and I truly believe there is no where to go but up. Next week we can chat and I will get you an @murraycoin.org E-mail address and our Slack room set up as well. Your effort and motivation gives us an asset no other altcoin in existence has right now and I agree no time is too soon to use that to our advantage. Thanks, Brian.

I don't care if he burns coins into CP that he has bought, but I wouldn't want him anywhere near any of the development or meetings, look at all the broken promises, not just octo, but a lot of other coins, and he can't even develop murraycoin, brianbbad seems to be doing all the work trying to promote it

Just to be clear I'm not trying to take ownership of anything here - just saying that I am one of the larger OctoCoin holders and I have received most of the code the original OctoCoin team had written and I intend to do what I can with it. syncsam is completely clueless and clearly has no concept of what this market has become. The altcoin market imploded and I doubt anybody here lost as much as me. When Murraycoin funding was pulled I couldn't afford to pay the team - people need money for their work to live, unfortunately. When I was making $1500/day just from mining and everything was rainbows and sunshine around here I was having fun and was highly motivated to dedicate a ton of time to this stuff. When the market collapsed and I was losing money every day... this had to be downgraded to nothing more than a hobby. It's easy for losers like syncsam to point fingers and blame people like me for their misfortunes - they have never accomplished anything in their life and they want to blame the world. It's a different thing entirely when you realize this is the real world and I'm certainly not running a charity here for self-entitled pricks. As my hobby, I work on things when I can. Sure I hope things blow up again and there is another heyday ahead but until then nobody can justify putting too much time and energy into this stuff. Whoever takes over this project will end up in the same position I am - it's thankless and hopeless. The only people happy will be that handful that dumped at the right time for a profit and disappeared... so they'll never even bother to come back and thank you. This entire market is filled with jerks and kids - it's a mess and completely different from what I thought it was going in. Nobody can really provide any quality assistance and they want everyone else to do the work for them and make them rich. It's the reason I abandoned these forums essentially - it's just depressing and kills motivation. I don't owe anybody anything - I have put more time and energy and money into my projects than syncsam could even comprehend and this is the end result. Live and learn, I suppose.

For what it's worth, I am still working on a couple of projects whenever I can find the time. While I'm not really close to finishing anything major (a lot of this stuff had multiple programmers working on it all with different styles... in addition to being incomplete) but there is some really good stuff to work with here.

The bottom completely fell out of the altcoin market - nobody can justify hiring the talent required to work on anything outside of bitcoin at this point. The bottom line is that there is still more value here than anything else I'm aware of in the altcoin market. While I intend to port some things over to Murraycoin as well... we still have real potential if people can start working together and I can actually get some of this stuff into production. I'm still trying to decide how to separate this stuff from all of the other garbage - I have some ideas.

Cryptocurrency has transformed into just a hobby for me at this point... but I am heavily invested while also being in a unique position where we can still do some cool stuff. I haven't been keeping up with this thread but I skimmed the past couple pages and I have to say... the logic behind (what I'm gathering) is the plan eludes me. It's obviously just restructuring existing value in hopes to move the needle enough in your favor to unload coins - it sounds like you guys are trying to trick each other. We've seen this stuff tried over and over again and it has never worked because the coins themselves are not the problem... the core technology is not the problem... the problem is there is no point to the coins outside of pipedreams and big ideas. OctoCoin tried to be something different - these guys were all legit and I was excited when I became a part of the team... but altcoins themselves are what beat down this project. This was just another altcoin heat check that was written off by curious investors dipping their toes in the water. Companies are shut down all the time when it becomes too difficult to turn a profit - this was one of them.

If we have people in here who have the talent to actually put something big together (along with the time to actually invest in it) then I think we can start moving the needle. My concern is that all I'm seeing are people debating about how to divide the coin totals, "trade in" coins, and other nonsense - this isn't going to make OctoCoin blow up. This is stuff that might have worked briefly a year or so ago (even then it was only successful short-term) but this is different situation.

The projects I'm working on can help but they aren't going to be enough on their own. Some of the really great stuff I have access too remain the property of others and I will have to pay licensing fees to use portions of the code - as they are flat fees, I will have to release them for Murraycoin and possibly even bitcoin as well. The lack of exclusivity certainly lowers the ceiling for OctoCoin. Some of the gambling stuff that I don't want associated with Murraycoin and don't want to risk the legal issues with bitcoin could be OctoCoin exclusive... but prioritizing here is difficult.

Basically I just wanted to say there is still some hope here. There was an unraveling of this community... we are in the middle of an altcoin wasteland in general... and even bitcoin is struggling to climb right now (which is mind-boggling) - this simply isn't a great time to be attempting to hype things up and release projects. Now is a good time to plan... and develop... and be ready when the timing is right. This isn't a sprint - we're less than 11 months post-launch here - in any other industry less than 11 months would be considered a joke. There is a reason altcoins are dead or dying - people don't understand business. There are far too many people here with no talent and no patience just hoping to strike it rich on the backs of those who actually put in the work. It's great to brainstorm and formulate plans but, in my opinion, you guys appear far too concerned with the superficial aspects here - this currency needs substance.

I need some sleep...

Brock you seem like a smart guy who just believed your own story a little too much.  As Charlie Munger says, what someone is shouting out to others they are also pounding in to their own head.  I don't doubt you have a lot of sunk costs in MRY but that only underscores how strong the force of gravity is for this coin.

Celebrity coins that aren't publicly or even privately endorsed by the person they are named after will not work.  Maybe someday they will, and maybe Brock you hoped to pad your CV with this project so you could go into the "celeb coin" consulting business or whatever.  But that day is a long way off, if it ever comes at all and if it does the world will be a very different place. It certainly doesn't change the fact that people lost money on your project and the donation pool to the Murray Bros. foundation is so tiny I would be surprised if they took it at all just because of the accounting headache involved with crypto.   But I guess you and your band o' MRY men had fun along the way, maybe that's a fair trade for some.

Since I tried to explain this at length back *last* February to the people in this thread, and of course got my posts deleted and called a troll (and yet... here we are, with MRY circling the drain as predicted), i am not going to spend much effort this time other than to say "do your due diligence," people.  And most of all, just because someone such as BHolzer is articulate and motivated doesn't mean they can overcome forces much bigger than they are nor are they necessarily acting in anyone's best interests but their own. Use common sense.

Sure, Mike - if you want to go around the threads of every altcoin (or even bitcoin, for that matter) and accuse the creators of losing people money over the past year you could keep yourself pretty busy for a while. Correlation does not imply causation and the depressed values currently does not make you any less wrong 12 months ago regarding why... but that hasn't stopped you before. It would be interesting to check out some of your successful projects which have contributed to your lofty arrogance in the face of logic and void of any obvious motivation - everybody loves a winner!

Also, I hate to stoop to this level, but here is another mikeymillie post from earlier today:

UTC is cool, it's one of the elite coins that everyone knows "something" will happen with sooner or later. People just have no patience.

UTC value has dropped nearly 20 times more than Murraycoin over the same period yet he made these two posts mere hours apart. Ah, altcoins - overwhelming levels of clever; mikeymillie is so transparent that he no longer exists. Times may be a-changin' but some things never change. This is one of the reasons we need to separate Murraycoin from these goofballs going forward - this forum has become a caricature of itself 5 layers deep.
9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [MRY] Murraycoin ▪ The Only Currency Worthy of Bill Murray ▪ Now Scrypt-2048 on: February 03, 2015, 09:09:25 PM
I realize everybody is disappointed with where we are at right now and, obviously, nobody is more disappointed than I am. Welcome to the world of cryptocurrency right now - it's been a roller coaster and, currently, it is essentially a wasteland. Just over a year ago Litecoin had a market cap of over 1 billion dollars and now, despite the increased supply generated, it's struggling to stay above $60,000,000. Most of the coins that were released around the same time as Murraycoin are either completely dead, verified scams by design, or trading for roughly 1 Satoshi. Murraycoin is trading at roughly 20 times less than it's all-time high vs BTC and, sadly, that makes it one of the best altcoin investments you could have made in the past year. We've seen the rise and fall of every ridiculous altcoin concept in that window... things like Auroracoin that had over a $600,000,000 market cap at one point and is now worth 20,000 times less. A lot of people have lost money in altcoins in the past year and it's easy to point fingers but can't we just all agree it sucks? I hope it turns around - I intend to be a part of it - but it's been a fiasco for a long time and to come back from this we need to do things differently.

I have more invested in altcoins than most people here and I certainly have more invested in Murraycoin than anybody here. I have over $100,000 in mining hardware gathering dust in my basement and I've personally invested over $20,000 just in buying Murraycoins. I have put hundreds (possibly even beyond that) of hours into the project between phone calls, updates, tweaks, answering emails, meetings, attempted collaboration, and development. Actual investors have lost money and people on the early Murraycoin team put everything they made back into the coin but we continue to struggle for the same reason the altcoin market is imploding: the money is spread thin and too much of the money comes from immature investors. These coins live and die based on community effort - Dogecoin blew up because it had a community around it helping to prop it up. I do what I can and continue to have faith in this project longterm... but I have a real job and a family and a life that has to take priority here. I have over 1/3 of the Murraycoins in circulation and most of them (essentially all of them) I bought at much higher prices than their current value. We're talking about a $5500 market cap right now - by almost every financial measure that market cap is a joke. The Murray Bros. Foundation had interest when there was obvious money that could be put toward a good cause but the image of cryptocurrency has been torn apart since then and, with it, the value and interest from big players. Bitcoin itself is just now dusting itself off from recent beatings and investor confidence in crypto is just bouncing back from an all-time low. The visibility is there - the exposure has never been higher - but we are in recovery mode across the board.

Look at this community - outside of the first month we have had only a small handful of people putting effort behind this and over the past 6 months it's really been 1 person in this community still contributing; everybody else just wants to make easy money from their armchair. Honestly, as sad as that is, this still remains one of the best communities out of all of the coins launched in the past 18 months.

I have not given up on Murraycoin and I really hope to wage a comeback but without bitcoin values rising to start getting people excited again... and with mining being all but completely unprofitable across the board... now really isn't the time to put in a ton of effort. Far too many altcoin people tear apart communities and their coins from the inside-out thinking they will get what they want from it... but all they do is destroy. I have tried to help out other coins but once the community turns and everybody isn't making a bunch of money overnight it's virtually impossible. People expect developers to dedicate their entire life to making everybody else rich while contributing nothing and it simply is not realistic. The harder you try to please everybody the harder they will turn on you in the end. The actual scammers who destroyed the cryptocurrency markets were quickly forgotten... but the people who stand by trying to help... trying to put out the fires year-after-year... who were here during the best of times and stayed for the worst of times... will always take the majority of the heat. People are losing money and they want somebody to blame - since I'm still here... I guess that somebody is me.

We have one of the only (if not the only) celebrity coins still alive (and it has survived for over a year) and has a celebrity that is cool with the project. We came close to nailing down a deal with the charity... and while that deal is not dead by any means... we're further away than we were a year ago. These forums are half of the problem - nobody is going to read through this thread, see the negativity, and want to jump onboard. Just like every other altcoin the very community that helped to build it is helping to continue tearing it apart. Instead of banding together and getting people excited... and motivating me to set aside my life to put more time into this thing by flashing some signs of positivity or interest... it's going to be a long road to the top.

This is the most thankless position on the planet and while we're going to bring this thing back... I'm not going to be spending a lot of time on these forums. These forums are primarily full of bitter, talentless "get rich quick!" losers who transform between cheerleaders and lynch mobs but in reality contribute nothing. They are here for one reason: to make money doing nothing. That is not the point of cryptocurrency and it's the very reason altcoins are 6 feet under right now.

My intention is to completely rebrand Murraycoin - not by parting ways with the most badass face of a currency ever or even excluding members of the community... but by separating it from the rest of the altcoins. This is a complex process... and it has to be done very carefully and at the right time. Again - nobody has more to gain here than I do and nobody has more invested in this project than I do so I'm not asking for a pat on the back if/when I can breath life back into this project... but I want this to be bigger than that. I'm not just protecting a brand, my name, and my investment - this dark altcoin world needs something positive and I want this to be something cool and inspiring. Renewing the domain and SSL certificate for the Murraycoin website is more than 99% of "devs" have done in the past year and I have to deal with people calling me out? I read this crap and it's the very reason I don't even bother logging into this forum more than once/month - it's just depressing and sad. A bunch of takers that represent the exact opposite of what Murraycoin was supposed to be all about. If you haven't noticed, I really dislike this devastatingly negative place.

I missed deadlines and haven't delivered on promises a number of times - I'm well aware. I have a lot of irons in the fire and I promise that you don't understand the timing anyway. When I forked Murraycoin and launched the new wallets a while back, that was a major project that took an insane amount of my time and effort and all it did was briefly boost the value and help keep things coasting a bit longer. Maybe some of you are just looking for a brief boost in value so you can dump your coins and move on... but that isn't what I'm interested in. The next action we take needs to make a splash and we need to have things lined up and organized first. If you're just waiting around to make or lose a quick buck go trade penny stocks.

The vision hasn't changed... but the path has. Things really aren't going to get more dead than a $5500 market cap - the half dozen people that are actually somewhat invested in Murraycoin aren't going to be exiting any time soon and when we build what I intend to build people will come flooding in organically. None of what happens right now matters.

I'm still here over a year later with virtually nothing to gain and plenty already lost. I'm speaking to a crowd that primarily lacks empathy and, for a large portion as well, logic. By the way, if you have made it this far into this post you are probably not who I am referring to... I've met some awesome people in the Murraycoin community and had many great conversations and chats over the past year. Despite the frustration at times, the threats, the stupidity, the immaturity... I've had a primarily positive experience. There are people I have connected with via Murraycoin that I hope to build friendships with someday and, despite where we're at right now, I'd do it all over again if I could. Anybody who isn't following what I'm saying, anybody who cannot empathize with the situation, anybody who lacks the perspective necessary to be on my side here - the door has been in the same place since day one and I couldn't care less about the handful of coins you're waiting to dump - don't let the door hit you in your neckbeard on the way out (if you are even old enough to grow facial hair). For those who want to contribute positively to this community and/or those patiently waiting for me to deliver (and when the time is right, I will deliver) - stick around. I cannot promise we will ever get to where we want to be but I will give it my absolute, reasonable best. You have not seen the last of Murraycoin - I can assure you of that.

Onward and upward.

I can't Find A working Block Explorer Is there One I'm missing?

We are switching servers (again) and as soon as the new website launches (which will be on or before the Murraycoin anniversay, January 20th - even if a few remaining items have to be rushed and/or delayed I owe this community a firm date, at least) the official block explorer will go up with it. Domains/etc will remain the same but we're really looking to start pushing things early in 2015. There may be another block explorer out there that I am unaware of. I apologize for the continued delays/etc but progress continues to be made and things will start coming together soon. The values of altcoins right now make it difficult to justify paying for help/etc but I am using as much of my available time as possible to push this project forward as well as another altcoin project I've been working on for a while.

I personally think the long-term value of Murraycoin is more important than it's current trading value, so let's focus on adding long-term value as a community.

This is definitely true... but raising the floor on the value will help considerably in meetings with the Murray Bros. Foundation. Obviously it's difficult to create stability in this market but their concerns regarding stability are only reinforced when there are huge dumps. At its current value, the MRY in their fund isn't really even worth their time, unfortunately. While we know their involvement would drive the price considerably higher... we need a higher (stable) floor to get them involved. It's a Catch 22, in a way... but we'll overcome it eventually. A spike in bitcoin value / (positive) media exposure would also assist considerably.

We are very close to rolling out a number of items and I know you, Brian, have been hard at work promoting... but a greater community effort would certainly increase momentum.

Let's keep things rolling - really going to push to get the new website out next week as well. Fortunately, I am approaching a rare, brief window of additional free time so I'm going to really put some muscle into Murraycoin during that period and wrap some of these lingering items up.

On another note, I did just remove a few off-topic posts just to reduce confusion - if your post was deleted, it wasn't because you violated any rules/etc necessarily - people can post whatever they want whenever they want and, honestly, we encourage them to do so. At the same time, the Murraycoin thread needs to be (primarily) about Murraycoin, Bill Murray, and/or the Murray Bros. Foundation and anything that takes it completely off topic doesn't make sense. We have weathered an intense altcoin storm and came out on the other side so we're sitting well ~10 months after we launched.

Also, as I will be helping to build a new & improved OctoCoin wallet using the Bitcoin Core 0.9.3 source, I figured it would be a good time to roll out a new Murraycoin client as well while I'm digging into things. Before I start on that project, I'm certainly open to suggestions regarding a potential algorithm change/etc. If we're going to potentially set up another hard-fork, we'd ideally want to get that behind us as soon as possible in order to ease adoption by newcomers due to our steadily growing audience. I hate to admit it, but I'm a bit out of the loop right now on the latest/greatest algorithms and continue to mine MRY on my lone remaining GPU rig. While I feel it's important to keep payouts essentially the same/etc to maintain the integrity of the initial specifications, I'm certainly open to an updated difficulty adjustment and hashing algorithm if enough people feel it makes sense. I also have some ideas for a visual update and I'm considering implementing some gimmicks such as a "special edition" wallet which only kicks in when a minimum balance is reached (for example, 500,000 MRY). I'm also strongly considering a default donation charged on all transactions which automatically goes to the Murray Bros. Foundation (I would include the option to reduce or even disable the donation, of course, as an actual forced donation might not be appealing to everybody). Primarily brainstorming here but I don't think it's fair for me to simply make the executive decision here when this is becoming more and more of a community effort every day. Let's get the conversation started and I will start doing some research as well as soon as time allows.

Brian has been kicking ass as usual and more and more people are getting excited (or at least intrigued) about what we're doing here. I've said from the start we have something different and, despite my lack of steady presence here, we do have a solid plan that remains in motion and I'm as confident as ever that things are going to play out nicely.

I have been advised to just make a post in here and see where the discussion goes before escalating the situation or even attempting to have this thread taken down (which I certainly wouldn't want).

This is the last post I'm going to make here personally until everything clears up/improves... but for those of you who are understandably/legitimately panicked and not just going full Grassy Knoll here... I felt it was important to brief you on the situation. A small piece of the original dev team, all of the code that has been written, and a shred of 888 passion among us still exists. Most (if not all) of the original dev team would certainly get involved again if the situation improved considerably. Like most people, I have several other priorities right now but I will personally be putting the finishing touches on the new wallet as soon as possible and then ensuring that 888 it at least back and trading on Bittrex. Several developers, including myself and the developer of another (fairly prominent) altcoin, have gone through the code and there is nothing there that could specifically cause issues with OctoCoin payouts. Regardless, some issue apparently popped up exclusive to Bittrex (after months without incident despite the same code being used) and, as a result, the new wallet will be 100% from scratch.

Once a new wallet is released and things are stabilized, hopefully things will begin moving in the right direction again. Nobody pulled the plug on this project - the wind was taken out of altcoin sails, the people with the checkbooks became less interested, the community grew impatient and demanding while only a select few did anything to contribute, and people had lives they needed to get back to. Unfortunately, businesses fail. Fortunately, worst-case scenario we can open source everything that has been done and through a community effort build something good in the crypto-world (even if that would make it no longer exclusive to OctoCoin... surely it would increase exposure considerably and help it to stand out from the wasteland of failed altcoins and crap).

Being a crypto developer is a thankless nightmare - I received death threats when Bill Murray didn't officially endorse Murraycoin (a promise I never even made - I was 100% transparent the entire time) - it's truly a bummer. People want to get rich quick and very few people are willing to put any effort into it. I was lucky enough to get Brian on board with Murraycoin because he is kicking ass and taking names getting the word out and putting an amazing level of effort into pushing it to the next level. Honestly, just creating awareness is half the battle. Every time I decide to get involved in a crypto project to bail everybody out I regret it. Things take time and talented people are in-demand and busy. There isn't a lot of money in this market right now - I'm staying minimally involved with bitcoin, Murraycoin, and 888 - and while I fully intend to increase my involvement in the near future, I simply have other priorities at this moment.

People wonder why I don't post or don't respond to PMs - I get dozens and dozens of private messages every week and, frankly, most people suck. Everything has been hammered across the altcoin board and this is a volatile, hostile environment that I personally grew tired of being involved with. This is not a lucrative position to be in. The original OctoCoin dev team still holds all of the premine/etc. I have over 2,000,000 OctoCoins personally - there is financial incentive to move this thing forward, of course, but from the minute I was officially contracted to assist with this project I have suggested we distance ourselves from this place (bitcointalk) as much as possible. There are some great people here and I've had some great conversations with many of them over my time here but, for the most part, it's a bunch of greedy kids with bad attitudes and it's certainly no place to grow roots for a business. Most of you have no idea how a business works - let alone attempting work/life balance - I have a family, friends, a very demanding job, and I got into crypto-currency because it was a fun hobby! Yes I was hoping to make a profit - who wouldn't? As soon as it stopped being fun, I started losing motivation. Very few good developers hang around long in this world because everybody wants instant gratification - they will tear everything down if it isn't built fast enough for them. They see dollar signs and those dollar signs quickly turn into blind rage - it's insane. I will have no part of it. I'm obviously sticking with the projects I have committed to but they will progress at my pace and information will be broadcast 1-way in a new venue. You guys can sit in here tearing yourselves apart if you think that is the best way to get things back on track but I refuse to get involved. When I saw the direction things were going, I shook my head and got back to my life. Like I said, when I can put together an organized timeline and make an official statement on things I'm happy to do it but I've worked my ass off for you guys in so many ways you'll never understand and I've lost thousands of dollars in the process.

So the show goes on... and I will continue to help move things forward behind-the-scenes... but on my own terms. Keep in mind, Murraycoin has been my project from the start and OctoCoin simply became something I got involved (or over my head?) in so Murraycoin takes priority. I'm not bailing this thing out on my own - we have real developers involved but we need some decent people to supplement things because this cannot be a full-time job for any of us (and it's looking like it never will be). The only winners in this market right now are the ones who create scams and hide behind false identities. I never once hid who I was because I am an honest person with good intentions. I don't regret getting involved in this project but I'd be lying if I said it didn't make me sad to see how this is unfolding. I'm not going to lie - my primary motivation was to protect my investment - but I honestly do care about ensuring the integrity of OctoCoin as much as possible while also protecting the investments of people in this with me.

As for the people harassing my elderly parents who called me yesterday, a police report has been filed. Obviously there isn't a lot that can be done if calls are coming from outside the US but every single incident will be reported to the authorities (I can't believe this is happening - it's beyond pathetic). Over the following few weeks, I will reach out to a number of you to get you inside the inner-circle and involved in our Slack discussions. There is a lot of positive stuff happening despite what's going on over here because we have literally been ignoring it once it degraded into 5th grade recess. If you don't hear from me within 3 weeks and feel you were unfairly overlooked, shoot me a PM and I will review your history. Perhaps we can appoint some people to be the messengers/etc but I'm done with this forum. I work 18 hours/day and sleep 3 hours/night - I've been on this planet for 31 years and the only death threats I have ever received have been from crypto-currency people. Maybe someday I'll finally learn how foolish it is to offer my help when it's needed. Maybe someday I'll learn that nothing that involves strangers on the Internet is ever going to be a fun hobby. Regardless, this entire situation is bullshit. An adult venue is required with constructive input and people willing to do their part if we're going to get this thing on track. We need people who understand marketing, allure, possess common sense, and are willing to put in at least some effort. You guys are like one giant wrecking ball.

To summarize: we'll get there... but I'm done with this forum.

As I've been extremely busy lately, I have been avoiding the recent drama/nonsense in here. The more it spiraled, the less sufficient my intended responses would become. It's easy to see why it remains so difficult for the rest of the world to take crypto-currency seriously. I haven't read through the majority but I have received a number of reports. As laughable (and downright senseless) as this may have become, I have chosen to get my attorney and the authorities involved in some capacity.

Why my involvement with OctoCoin and my recent (not even secretive) collaboration to help save the project (and my large investment in it) is grounds for cyber stalking, harassment, and childish character assassination is beyond me... but that is the logic we are unfortunately dealing with. If there is one thing crypto people have proven time and time again, it's that they're great at tearing things down.

So roll up your "Jump to Conclusions" mats because statements will be made soon. Bad timing for everything but I suppose it's time to reevaluate things. For those in the know, I still intend to follow through on my part of everything while doing whatever possible to separate myself, my family, and my ventures (both crypto-related and otherwise) from this forum and most (certainly not all) of the people in this thread. This is nuts, guys. What a bummer this has degraded into.

Who has been buying the last few days? Someone from this thread? I'll start buying tomorrow again.

I put a couple buy orders out there but they never got filled (they're still sitting there). For the most part, the only ones selling are the miners+auto-sellers. Makes it difficult to buy in any decent quantity. Even if you put the top buy order in, odds are it will never get filled because other buy orders will just stack on top of it.
16  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [888] [SCRYPT] OctoCoin ◦ The Power of Eight ◦ Don't Blink on: September 30, 2014, 02:10:43 AM
As of this post, more than 31,000,000 Octos have been mined.
The block reward remains at 88 per block as per the block explorer.

Maybe the wording is a little difficult in the OctoCoin website, and the rewards will be cut down to 80 in 88 days, or I did not read something correctly.

Anyone care to take a better stab at it?  Grin

hmmm yeah i thought it was supposed to cut from 88 to 80 also... it's not super clear though.

In looking at the source:

Code:
int64_t GetOctoCoinSubsidy(int nHeight) {
   int64_t qSubsidy = 80*COIN;

   int BlockCountA = 180655;
   int BlockCountB = 358364;
   if (nHeight <= BlockCountA)
   {
      if (nHeight <= 94255) {
         qSubsidy = 188 * COIN;
  }
  else
  {
     qSubsidy = 88 * COIN;
  }
   }
   else
   {
      qSubsidy >>= ((nHeight - BlockCountA) / (BlockCountB)); // Subsidy is cut in half every 358364 blocks (~1 year)
   }

   return qSubsidy;

}

So basically, it will remain at 88 until block #180,655. Currently, we are at block #176,615. So in about 4,000 blocks, the reward will drop to 80 coins/block. This will likely happen at some point within the next 5 days.

Once it drops from 88 to 80, it will simply halve every 358,364 blocks (or roughly every year). So around this same time next year, the reward will drop to 40 coins/block.

Lead developer just posted on reddit explaining why he hasn't posted here in a while: http://www.reddit.com/r/vertcoin/comments/2hn22c/a_little_hope_for_the_hopeless_and_anyone_getting/
...

With the appearance of the lead dev, the recent 'doom-days' posts by the trolls, FUDs and the fearful ones can finally be put to rest.

In my experience, attempting to please the people having panic attacks is hopeless. They each sit around with their hand out complaining and at some point, as a developer, you have to just begin ignoring them. They contribute to the destabilization of the currency, unfortunately, but it's unavoidable. They do not understand the planning and effort that goes into moving things forward and nothing will make them truly understand. Even though the majority of them are actually invested in the very currency they are disrupting, they lack the cognition required to realize their contributions negatively impact morale, the community, creativity, and progress while increasing frustration for all and driving away new interest. A large percentage of their growing frustration is a direct result of their own actions. As an example, I have been receiving a consistent flow of hate mail (literally) for months due to the ongoing delays I have encountered attempting to secure an official endorsement for Murraycoin - eventually I simply stopped reading the messages. I am doing everything I can to move things along as quickly as possible - why add to the problem?

VTC will be just fine - it's important to realize negative people tend to make more noise but that doesn't necessarily mean they represent the majority. Yes, we need to reverse the ongoing trend... but there are constructive ways to approach things and it's time to begin shifting focus toward the positive aspects of VTC and the talented developer(s) involved. Impatience is a staple of the cryptocurrency world and grey matter, for whatever reason, is seemingly at a premium.
18  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [888] [SCRYPT] OctoCoin ◦ The Power of Eight ◦ Don't Blink on: September 29, 2014, 02:15:12 AM
I do want this coin to succeed.  the problem is if someone is looking to buy a coin and they have 2 coins to choose from (we will say for this they are basically similar), and they see one set of devs, that have been professional, kept their word and deadlines, then you have the other coin, where the devs aren't professional, can't keep their own deadlines, not pro active, often can't be contacted.  which coin would you pick.

The problem with that analogy is I don't know of any coin in the past 6 months that fits your first description. In my opinion, the OctoCoin devs have been the most professional of all the recent altcoin devs (next to Murraycoin, of course! Hey - I'm trying!) They have given zero indication that they are concerned with driving up the price in the short-term/etc - something most of the other coin developers seem to be focused on 100%. These guys are in it for the long haul, tired of missing their goals, and certainly more frustrated with the situation than anybody. Who has more motivation than them to succeed? Who has put more effort into this? Who has to sift through page after page of people who have turned on them and then go back to work for the benefit of the very people that are tearing them apart? I just think everybody needs to relax a bit. Be smart about things, sure, but constructive contributions are key. Time and time again it's been proven these developers have no interest in getting involved in arguments/flame wars/etc and the more volatile it gets in here the less they post. In fact, have they ever engaged anybody with a negative attitude? They have their sights set on their goals and I have no problem with them avoiding the insanity that is this entire forum (not just this thread) when there is nothing to gain. Seriously - the entire "alternate cryptocurrencies" section of BCT is beginning to resemble a psych ward. Everyone has their hands out and nobody wants to contribute - 888 has been one of the rare exceptions where the community actually rose up and contributed in various ways. It's understandable that people have become less enthusiastic waiting around... but it seems crazy to me that people are flipping out. They're posting - they claim they're still working away - nobody can make your decisions for you but take that information and go from there.

Can we get back on topic? Let's think up some ideas to help move things forward while we wait instead of burning this whole thing down.

Just a brief note: once we launch the new Murraycoin website, we will also be moving all of the Murray Bros. Foundation donations over to a new Murraycoin address. Right now, there are too many transactions to display the total in the Murraycoin Explorer. Instead of continually extending that limit, it just makes more sense to start with a clean address. For historical purposes, we will show all transactions associated with the original donation address on a dedicated page. Also, donations made to the original address will automatically transfer over to the new one. This is still a week or two down the road but for those of you trying to view the current donation address on the block explorer, this information is for you.

all I can say is read the thread, How long did the community try and get in touch with them for??? and then all they have come out and said is the same thing as 5 weeks ago

<edit> and if you read back at all my posts in this thread I have never asked for them to post every week, all I have asked for is some professionalism

What was the community trying to get in touch with them about? I guess I missed something. Every time I've seen something that required them to communicate with the community they were here (given I'm sure I've missed several pages throughout this thread).

Yes - they said the same thing as 5 weeks ago because, as they said, that's all there is to say. Obviously it's not what anybody wants to hear but if there is nothing new for them to add... and everybody is screaming for them to post... I guess they're damned if they do damned if they don't, right? They aren't trying to fool anybody and they've made it very clear that they don't expect you to be 100% on board until they actually start to deliver. Now they're working on the new client as well - let them do their work. What the hell have you done lately?

Also, I read back a whole 3 posts to find this:

I smell more bullsh*t

... typically visit at least two times each week. ...

you just have to read the last few months thread posts to realise that that is bullish*t

<edit> add to that its the same as what they said last time and look how that turned out

They said that they, "typically visit at least two times each week" - as Shell said, they never claimed to have posted two times each week. Obviously they wouldn't say that since they clearly haven't been - there isn't two things to post every week! If you had included a more complete quote, it would make even more sense:

We read every post in this thread and typically visit at least two times each week. When we have worthwhile updates to provide, we will always provide them. Once our credibility grows, updates with less substance will provide benefit where they currently do not.

They are acknowledging that they have limited credibility until they deliver what they have promised. They say they visit the thread often and read all of the posts. This is simply a reading comprehension issue. You misunderstood their post and you misunderstood Shell's post. I think you're letting your frustration get in the way of accurate processing.

I just don't understand the motivation to derail this entire thread with angry posts and nonsense - it's you guys bombarding the thread with this crap that are weakening the community and the value as much as anything. You induce panic which does absolutely nothing constructive. You scare away anybody new that comes here and sees instability and friction. You demand updates... yet when they provide what updates they can you flip out because you aren't satisfied. Some of you guys are obviously clueless when it comes to the software world - everything is always behind schedule. The deeper you get into a project the more areas you want to perfect. The original iPhone was over a year behind schedule, OS X took 2 years longer to complete than originally estimated - if you've ever worked with programmers, these guys a notoriously optimistic when it comes to release dates.

Before you post some angry rant in here, ask yourself, "what good is this going to do for OctoCoin and its community?" I simply don't understand being a blatant asshole and twisting words around/etc trying to derail the entire thread - I truly don't. I'm sorry you misunderstood the post but you are feeling negative about this thing and you surely aren't going to post anything positive. I don't understand the point in trying to freak everyone out with constant complaining and rants. I'll never understand the motivation to unnecessarily destabilize a community you are a part of - I really won't. We're all in this together man and of course it's frustrating to wait and wonder but not nearly as frustrating as reading your posts. Take a step back and regroup - why do you want to drive a stake through this community? I'm just trying to understand the thought process here - short of simply being malicious, nothing really computes.

They're busting their ass while you're sitting around whining. Nothing they can say will satisfy you so quit asking them to say anything before they're ready! When these guys make you a bunch of money you better kiss their feet.
