Georgem,

Upon a node being kicked from the network due to not meeting the criteria of a productive node, will the network automatically recognize the next node "in line" with the next highest collateral? Meaning, will there be a queue of nodes bidding to get on the SN network (if for instance someone couldn't or didn't want to buy more SPR to get on the network - they merely keep their node with less than sufficient collateral running on a vps waiting for a spot to open)?

The way I focus on implementing it is not by kicking nodes from the network.
What will happen is that your "bad" node will be left out of the payment-cycle and receive no reward, but your node doesn't stop doing it's (although crappy) job.
Ofcourse it is also possible that your node is misbehaving so badly that other servicenodes have put it on a temporary blacklist, then your node is like a mental patient talking to itself.
But there is no "shutting down" mechanism involved at all.

Furthermore, the network knows at all times the amounts of collateral that any servicenode is currently willing to invest.
Those are locked SPR amounts, visible in the blockchain.

i.e. Say a node gets kicked for being a crappy node, and I have a node on a VPS with the collateral of say 995 (the highest of any other sitting on a VPS), would my node be immediately inaugurated into the service network, or would I have to do something to make it a SN after recognizing there was a spot open?

Forgive me if you have addressed this somewhere. I didn't see it in your original update - only that one could *take* a seat. Not *receive* a seat after waiting.

Yes, that's what I'm trying to achieve, a more or less automatic re-entrance.
If your node was already running, but couldn't occupy a seat because all seats were taken, then the moment the situation changes, you'll immediately re-enter the game.

In this regard... seats don't really exist, you never occupy anything. it's rather a continuum that is constantly recalculated to find out if you are eligible for a reward.
And this continuum (the spread) can be visualized in the form of seats. This visualization is for us humans, not for the network.

Well there is more to the story, because the scoring mechanism has some say too, and it is quite possible that you..

a) have a running servicenode
b) are eligible to receive a reward
but
c) your scoring is so bad that your reward is nullified.

I am doing experiments with letting your servicenode be prepared so that it can automatically react to a constantly changing situation.

If you look at this screenshot under "Auto collateral tasks"...

... this will be a mechanism you can setup to let your servicenode automatically do all kinds of things so it can quickly react when the "collateral market" changes.

For example you can say here:

If your current COLLATERAL falls lower than the MEAN of all other collaterals in the network, then go ahead and ADD enough SPR so that your COLLATERAL is again atleast as large as the MEAN.

There will be more such trigger points you can define in an IFTTT (if this then that) fashion.

How realistic would it be to host a website on these nodes? Bypassing a single dedicated server?

hm, not sure I understand your question.

Do you want to host websites on the same server that runs a node?
No problem, I am doing that all the time. It would be a waste of space/cpu to host a dedicated server "just" to run a node.

Or, do you mean that you want a node to give back html-sites (answer http requests like a webserver) when a certain IP/port is opened in a browser?
Kinda like giving back a "webstats site" with servicenode information to the public? And it would be the servicenode itself that "serves" those html pages to the clients?

That's probably not what you are asking about, but those are all interesting questions that we will explore...

Yea, their servers were having trouble the entire time I was futzing around with it.  Undecided

Took me like 10 tries to save new stuff!!

Edit: It's worse than it was before I put the reddit up. Looks like the new Spreadcoin reddit has so much traffic going to it that it's bogging down the servers!!  Cool Cool Cool

Edit 2: Appears to be back up!

Edit 3: Populated it with some things. Keep adding  Grin Grin

great job with the reddit!

Drumroll please!

--------------------

Here is our new reddit!! https://www.reddit.com/r/SpreadcoinOfficial/

It is pretty bare, but it shall be our new home there. Please feel free to post things that might improve it's decor. I can subsequently change it. It would be really cool to get a custom theme / interface so if anyone has some coding experience in that regard, you can make the new reddit look more awesome!

I was unable to get in touch with the previous reddit moderator, so I went ahead and made this one bc I'm impatient. If I get in touch with the previous moderator, maybe I will delete one of them. Or maybe I can make the previous one a memorial to Mr. Spread (the Hamster).

Also, I have created a small list of tasks that can be started by members of the community here: http://spreadcointalk.org/index.php?topic=754.0

Feel free to add some more things you think the community could work on, no matter how small or large!

P.S. Coins, I found your reddit from past posts, so I sent you a message to become a moderator if you so please.

Ahhrg, I just wanted to enjoy it, but then it shows...

I will try again in a minute, reddit, alright alright...
445  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: March 10, 2016, 08:16:38 PM

There is so much you guys could do while I concentrate on coding.

The more activity I see in the forum, the more it motivates me to spend those extra hours coding.

Additionally, I will soon be looking to take over the old Spreadcoin reddit. Probably tonight or this weekend. I will make a new account on reddit, contact the old mod, and then hopefully gain moderator status, myself. If this is not the case, I will begin working on a new Spreadcoin reddit. I think reddit is a great place to have a community, and even if it is not used that frequently by everyone, having it updated will provide more "legitimacy" to the project

That said, I have few skills that would help in making the reddit look fancy. If anyone will want to work on making it look pretty after I make it & populate it, that would be great!

I will post the link to the new reddit when it is up (or just tell you about my acquisition of the old one).  Grin

In fact, tonight I will make a subtopic under community projects starting a list of things I think that we as a community can start working on while Georgem works on SN's. Keep an eye out, but I will surely post the link here tonight.

Looking forward to the new reddit account!  Cool

Bitcoin blocks have been pretty full recently

Hey coins101,

I think you are the best suited to answer this guy's question:

http://spreadcointalk.org/index.php?topic=749.msg3993#msg3993

Let's get the big data discussion going.

There is so much you guys could do while I concentrate on coding.

447  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: March 10, 2016, 03:45:00 PM
Thoughts on beginning a Big Data Methodology conversation on BTCT in a separate topic?

We have one on the SPR forum here: http://spreadcointalk.org/index.php?topic=749.0 , but it has rather grim amounts of traffic at the moment. Obviously, we want to get people to post in spreadcointalk more, but we are still a growing community and it may be better for productive discussion if we open the conversation up to a wider pool of people with new thoughts and ideas. I can always add important & valuable posts from here to the spreadcoin forum if some people want to explicitly contribute there.

Coins, I was hoping you might be able to direct me to a spot to open this conversation up on bitcointalk / open it up yourself in the appropriate spot, if this is thought to be a good idea. I'm woefully unfamiliar with the borderlands of BTCT!

I would not separate any core "fields of interest" from the main spreadcoin thread here. But that's just my opinion.

Hey, rhinomonkey, what timezone are you in anyway?

I'm located in switzerland. It's 16:44 CET
448  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Spreadcoin on MS Azure: Community Free Vote on: March 09, 2016, 09:35:31 PM
We'll take another look at this after service nodes are released.

but we need the discussion to go on.

I'd love it if you started an "explorative azure partnership" thread on spreadcointalk.

I think it would fit well in the "community projects" subforum:

449  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Spreadcoin on MS Azure: Community Free Vote on: March 09, 2016, 08:57:29 PM
Rushed?

that's why I put it in quotes.
"Rushed" as in "needs much more thought".

If anything is rushed than it's this survey here.
We don't even have all the information needed to make an educated choice,
but we are already voting?

That's why democracies fail!  Grin

450  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Spreadcoin on MS Azure: Community Free Vote on: March 09, 2016, 06:56:34 PM
we are asking the community if some dev time should be allocated

Well-motivated but needs more thought.

Spreadcoin is not a legally-constituted entity in any jurisdiction so cannot be a party to a contract.

No-one can enforce exclusive representation of Spreadcoin and no-one can legally represent Spreadcoin as a party to a contract.

No-one's permission nor agreement is required to pursue an application for MS to add SPR the list of supported alts (AIUI, it reduces to persuading someone to create and submit a Docker file for MS to add to an MS-hosted directory).

So, supplementary question - who is offering to shoulder the responsibilities of:

- development
- testing
- maintenance
- continuous integration
- technical support
- liaison with MS
- ensuring continuity

About a week's initial devops work there I reckon (for the bulk of it), about $2500 at contract rates. Plus the ongoing maintenance task, of course - well, once the paradigm is established, it would do SPR more harm than good to have a publicly broken Azure-hosted service than to not offer a service at all.

Cheers

Graham

Very good points!
And I agree, this all looks like a "rushed" move,
although I like the spirit of the people behind this idea.

If anything I like that we explore this with the necessary caution,
so I welcome the discussion.

Microsoft has not much info available about all the open quesions/liabilities/legalities, etc...

BTW, I state my own opinion about this, starting here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1045373.msg14139295#msg14139295 and continuing over the next few pages.
451  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: March 09, 2016, 12:08:38 PM
Ethereum, Factom, Emercoin and several more coins have been accepted to this platform. ....
None of them have changed any of their code, governance, licensing, funding, or anything else about their project.

If you look here : https://blog.bitpay.com/bitcore-for-microsoft-azure/

They talk about: Bitcoin API Calls – 20x Faster

(EDIT: on second thought, I'm not sure though if what bitpay talks about in this post is specific about bitcore or can be applied to all blockchains running on azure)

Quote
A Bitcore node's direct access to the blockchain via its native bindings to Bitcoind makes Bitcore-based services 20X faster than those using JSON-RPC.
That's a significant performance improvement for services that rely on blockchain data, from payment processors and exchanges to block explorers.

We've already implemented Bitcore as the backend for our own bitcoin wallet Copay. Users can choose to connect directly to private Bitcoin nodes using our Bitcore Wallet Service,
which includes a command line client made for business users.

If I understand this correctly, a "native binding" gives you access to "native code" without the need to write any native code.
In the azure/microsoft case that might be a native binding between node.js and c++ that they provide to their users.

Part of their vetting procedure is probably to find out how easily this "native binding" can be implemented,
something tells me that slight adjustments to the spreadcoin code might actually be necessary in some cases.

Best thing for the future would be if we had some sort of serious API extension for spreadcoin, so that other programs can get more direct access than just JSON-RPC calls.
Are other coins already doing something like this?

452  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: March 09, 2016, 11:54:31 AM
Just created an account to pipe in here... I think you guys are woefully under-explaining the Microsoft thing. It's very simple: they'll offer pre-packaged SPR-enabled cloud instances if an application is submitted and the code is vetted as safe for their platform. Nothing about this "moves" the SpreadCoin network. Nothing about this changes SpreadCoin. Nothing about this forces or even persuades SPR users to start using Azure services *unless* they, of their own volition, find it convenient to assist in the operation or development of SPR-related services.

Ethereum, Factom, Emercoin and several more coins have been accepted to this platform. None of them are in a "partnership" with Microsoft. None of them have "moved" to the Microsoft network. None of them have changed any of their code, governance, licensing, funding, or anything else about their project. I honestly have no idea where the concept of moving the SpreadCoin network to a centralized partnership with overlord Microsoft comes from, but it's waaaaaaaay off the mark of what's actually been offered/implemented. Having not gone through the application myself, I can't be sure, but from what I can infer from the experiences of other projects, the vetting process seems to be self-contained to a code-safety review within Microsoft.

As for why it would be advantageous (aside from the price/investor confidence/growth), I believe this is a completely benign program to participate in that doesn't threaten decentralization, arguably increasing it through easier, immediate, and reliable end-user access to SPR services and development. If PayPal said they're accepting SpreadCoin to process payments and SPR doesn't have to change anything about themselves - would you consider that centralization? Would you be wary of such an integration? This isn't the same level, but it's similar. You have a platform with major exposure, solid support, and in this case, a particularly forward-thinking team behind it for coming from such a corporate behemoth (who else is doing Blockchain-as-a-Service, seriously?) and they've read the SPR whitepaper and would be happy to help support the SPR community and ecosystem by offering it on their experimental and forward-thinking BaaS platform.

I honestly don't see how this can be perceived as a threat or a dangerous thing. If the service sucks, no one uses it. If Azure makes no money off of BaaS, it ceases to be offered. If they offer reliable service for an attractive price, enabling developers and users to access SPR more easily or more economically, then all this is, is decentralized infrastructure (you do know what Azure is, right?) building around SpreadCoin. Frankly I'm stunned that the de facto project lead on SPR is so under-informed on his main competitors/counterparts, and what's happening in this business space. Not trying to be a dick, but you probably need some more hands on deck with various strengths and knowledge. Beyond the code. And then you need to seriously consider to their advice, the hard part. Wink

I've been with spread since Mr. Spread launched it, btw, had an old account here that I deleted last year, used to be a "Hero" - some would probably remember me. Anyway, I stop in every month or so just to see what's happening, and I had to clarify this Microsoft misunderstanding going on. Good luck with whatever direction the project goes, still have coins in the vault and watching curiously.

Welcome!

Yesterday we started the azure discussion to finally get some clarity about the matter.
And it seems that we are slowly getting there.
Your comment "confirms" a few of my assumptions.
But alas, if only microsoft was a little bit more open about their process, it's weird that they aren't.

...

Not you specifically...'you', as in the project.

The team seems in general agreement and the vote is indicative of a yes, too.  OK. We'll get on it and make an application.

We are Borg.

Then what were we arguing about the whole time.

You guys can join any "club memberships" you like, alone or in groups, just don't let that interfere with my dev'ing, or people who aren't interested.

Azure require you apply.

If anybody can apply for the addition of a coin, why hasn't this happened already?

If only lead devs can make the application, what kind of centralized bullshit is this?

Nobody is the king of spreadcoin.

Sure, direction of development is based on some form of meritocracy (whoever brings the most to the table, gets to indicate the direction),
but like in any true decentralized system, any participation or affiliation of any member, miner, node operator, etc.. is completely decided by themselves.

Again, if you coins101 or any other member want to apply for a partnership with microsoft, then please go ahead and do so.

But why exactly do you need "Devs to direct some attention away from development to get Spreadcoin on the Azure platform" ?

Sounds like there is some hidden catch to all this,  Grin Grin Grin
No, I'm joking.

Please contact Microsoft, and ask if it is allowed to just loosely join as a "subset" of the spreadcoin community. Or if the microsoft borg-queen has more specific orders.
Anyway, we have tons of interesting stuff in the making, and microsoft will surely be interested in this.

457  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: March 08, 2016, 10:40:05 PM
One of my customers has just signed up to move their users to Microsoft Office 365. About 30,000 people switching to the cloud. MS can do this sort of thing, switch on people by the millions onto their cloud offering. As Minerpage said, that's a lot of eyeballs looking at SPR, which is why Azure vet who goes on their platform as a recommended offering.

Does this mean we become centralized? Are you going to change the principle of one IP for every servicenode?

My best guess is that Azure will end up being too costly for servicenode operators. There are plenty of low cost cloud offerings out there that will be cheaper.

I see where you are coming from, and I understand all the motivations, calculations and goals involved. They make very much sense and fit in our plans.

What I don't understand is why spreadcoin needs to make such a move "as a whole entity" to make this happen.
Is this an actual condition requested by microsoft? That lead devs need to follow suit?

We are just a bunch of decentralized nodes.

And again, I have no problem whatsoever if some of those nodes decide they want to partner with microsoft.
So, go ahead!

I hope it's that easy!
You can even openly advertize that some of us are in fact "partnering" with microsoft. I have no problem with that.

458  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: March 08, 2016, 10:21:54 PM
Maybe we can find a solution that makes all of us happy?  Grin

Is it possible that all of you who want to "join azure" go ahead and create some sort of union and partner with microsoft (in a non-inclusive way),
while I (and all people who disagree or want to stay unattached) continue working with spreadcoin in the usual independent and nonpartisan way?

Why does this need to be an "all or nothing" decision?

You see, there are parts of our community that really don't want to have any business with microsoft and what it stands for.

So for spreadcoin to openly side with microsoft might immediately frighten away all those who disagree.

For me as lead dev it's one of the most important things that I stay as impartial and unbiased as possible.
I just create software. I don't want to have any partnerships with corporations, banks or governments.
But those entities (and the rest of the world) are ofcourse still free to use any software I create.
Also, you are free to have partnerships with those entities, but why should spreadcoin give up its unique freedom?

Do you see bitcoin enter partnerships with such entities?
459  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: March 08, 2016, 10:17:44 PM
No. It's a cloud offering. You can use it as a sandbox, but its like any other cloud environment. They just vet who goes on there.

You know, the way you said you might weed out who gets to go into the decentralized block explorer.

There is a giant difference though.

The altcoin taxonomy project will do reviews (kinda like a "consumer action group") to inform people about altcoins,
so that they can make an educated decision.

At no point in time do we have the power or intention to actually force our will on other servicenode operators.
They can install any coin they like, even coins we disagree with.

But the vetting process of microsoft goes much much farther than a simple suggestion, right?

They have the power and willingness to stop you from doing what THEY decided you shouldn't be doing.

460  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: March 08, 2016, 09:50:54 PM
....

I just don't understand this sort of "partnership" a coin has to officialy enter to be accepted.
..

For them, its about limiting reputation risks.

Like I said, IOS screen who goes on the app store for the same reason, but that is mostly about preventing scammers and viruses, etc.

I see.

So it's like a giant sandbox so to speak?

Not sure I like the sound of that...
