quick question; is there some kind of reward for running a node ?
(apart from supporting the network ofcourse)

Assuming you mean 'masternodes', which we call servicenodes, then yes, but no details yet.

And will you still on the first idea of the dynamic SPR needed to create one?

(I guess yes as georgem was a big fan of this feature;) )

EDIT: also if I remember well on the first implementation of Mr Spread of "ServiceNode", it was possible to create various SN within the same wallet. If you can remove this feature : aka :1 server = one SN.

This was only possible because those first test nodes did practically nothing (no CPU and no RAM requirement, nothing!).

It's easy to install dozens of server nodes on one machine if they only run "empty" services.

Once services actually need ressources this is going to change immediately and drastically.

I expect that it will not be feasible to run more than one service node on one server (especially if it's a VPS)...
982  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (official thread) on: May 08, 2015, 02:26:43 PM
George, I have another question about the current proposed "auction" model for service nodes.

If each service node will be running the service(s) chosen by the owner of that node, how can the service node network guarantee quality of service for a particular service?

For example, if there were 800 service nodes in the spread and only 50 of those nodes provided a particular service, what could we do to make sure that 25 of those nodes wouldn't be dropped by the spread thus affecting quality of service.  This is a particularly pertinent question because if there will eventually be a variety of services on offer, each service will probably provide different income to the service node operator thus affecting the affordability of running a node providing that service.

Is it as simple as saying that the model decides which services are viable to operate?

Every servicenode will be encouraged to run every service that exists. In parallel on the same machine.

Or else it will receive negative score points for every service that is missing.

So in your example you must explain why 750 of your 800 service nodes decided to not run that particular service.

This is something that should not happen.

I was thinking about local laws preventing a service node operator from choosing to operate a particular service.  I like the concept of all snodes providing all services though.

Yes, good point.

But we can assume that the majority of service nodes will always move to a region where they are "allowed" to run a particular service.
(or where civil disobedience is practiced widely and openly ---> no need to ask for permission.  Grin )

Why would the majority decide to move the servers to a region where a service is forbidden? Doesn't make sense.

Therefor the majority will always prevail, and the nodes that can't run a particular service will always be the minority.

And if this can't be guaranteed we should get rid of that particular service.

EDIT: If you look at the world map, you find either places where there is still very much freedom, or places where there is not much freedom to do anything.
So we can expect that most of our servicenodes will always move to the places on earth with the most freedom (or the most motivation for civil disobedience).

Only if you run 100% of all available services will you receive the full 30% share of the mining reward. (or whatever we will choose)

So in your example you must explain why 750 of the 800 service nodes decided to not run that particular service.

This is something that should not happen voluntarily (but maybe because of other reasons?), because why would they want to miss the extra SPR?

I'm contributing 5k SPR to the Bitcoin Core development as a bounty.

I'll let CHAOSiTECH confirm how that should be shared.

I know the work involved will be significant, so 5k is more of a token gesture by comparison to the effort that is involved.

I will add 5,000SPR to the bounty for Bitcoin Core development.  As Coins101 said, it will require a significant amount of specialist work to achieve.

Total Bitcoin Core Development Bounty:  10K SPR

Dan

lol you guys are evil, i have no chance of working that amount of time until i get home, which is 11 days from now....

:-p

edit:

ok, this is what im going to do, i will fork bitcoin core on my github page, enyone who wants to help, use that as a base, and send a merge pull request to me, and i will include whatever work has been done from you, when we have something that seems like its done, we are going to do some heavy testing on testnet to make sure there is no promlem with the new client

repo is at https://github.com/FireWalkerX/spreadcoin-core

Done!

FYI - Vertoe is going through a similar process at the moment updating Cach to Bitcoin core.

Yeah, it's that time of the season...

darksend would need the masternodes, which is not activated, neither is darksend

I'm pretty sure darksend is in there somewhere, or could be.

ServiceNodes could run darksend.

nobody is arguing over not implementing it at some time :-)

first i think we need to get service nodes up and running, and get spreadcoin up on core, then we can begin adding whatever we all need and see as beneficial... its not like we are restricting by basing it on one or the other, it just helps making the progress clean, besides, its better to focus on one task at a time, that makes things cleaner

The main theme behind Spreadcoin: "Decentralize Everything"...

So any service we include should try to stay close to this principle, and strive to decentralize something that is now centralized (or needs help to get more decentralized ---> why we want to help bitcoin)

This principle does not necessarily include Anonymization techniques that go farther than what bitcoin has to offer.

But who knows what we will come up with.

I am not against it per se.

But nonetheless we should remove everything darksend/darkcoin or instantx related that is still in our code, at the latest when we move to bitcoin core codebase.
987  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (official thread) on: May 07, 2015, 09:47:51 PM
on a side note, i think its time to debate on upgrading our sources to core.. the question is should we base it on bitcoin core, litecoin core or darkcoin core, that is the question... i will start the process when we have figured out which path to walk...

CHAOSiTEC

We are going to need to upgrade to core code at some point in time, it brings many benefits.

Probably wait until I have a working servicenode implementation ready, ...

But I am not going to stop you if you already want to start porting current spreadcoin code to core.

i work at sea and wont be home for the next 2 weeks anyway, but when i get home i will start the process, besides, it will take some time to do so, so your implementation of a working service node will be done before i have finished anyway ;-p

the question is, which one would the community like us to use as base, each bring their own plusses and minuses...

cleanest, would be bitcoin or litecoin, darkcoin could be beneficial, but could also bring alot of controvercy... depends on our finished product, and what features we would bring over, from there

Definitely bitcoin core, I have already started dissecting it and comparing the changes.

Very well done contribution!

Good job on the new website!

I'm interested in running a node, but I have Windows 2003 Server: how does it work on this platform?

Exactly the same, configure and run the daemon.

If you don't want to build the daemon yourself, download the windows binary:

http://www.spreadcoin.info/downloads/SpreadCoin32.7z

(it includes the daemon)

Wait, I will check this myself first...

I have total trust in Kristov's integrity and acknowledge that he devoted a lot of time for not very much recompense to his Darkcoin review but the fact he was receiving donations in DRK left him open to challenges on his impartiality.  Credit where credit is due, he picked enough holes in Darkcoin at the time that this was never seen as an issue  Smiley

You are right, this was a bit of a controversy.
But in the end, let the person decide what he prefers.

It was Kristov Atlas himself who initiated the donation process, and he specifically asked for DRK:
http://www.reddit.com/r/DRKCoin/comments/2aw4wy/donations_for_darksend_code_review/

So impartiality aside,... we DO want people to look at SPR as a valuable means of exchange.  Smiley
(even from our reviewers, and the idea is, that if a reviewer finds a bug in SPR this will not diminish the value, but rather increase it. Bugs can be fixed.)

I am totally biased for sure: ATM as main dev I DO prefer SPR over BTC or fiat...  Grin
(any BTC or Fiat donation will just be converted to SPR anyway... so why not skip this step)

Looks like some VPS providers have an affiliate program.

Well, that got me thinking. 10%-20% going to a dev fund?  I'll take a look at which ones pay for referrals and the devs can think about signing up and putting various links on the website.

2,000 instances * $10/instance * 12 months * 20% = $48k  Tongue

I am fine with affiliate links... when I have them ready we can start using them in tutorials or on the forum,
just never spam people, only use it when it makes sense to offer the service.

(Using affiliate links about servers in a tutorial that explains setup of spreadcoin nodes makes sense.)

I will research this over the next few weeks and start official affiliate partnerships with allkinds of service providers (in Europe and US)
I can then make monthly reports about the devfund.

This sounds like a good first step to start a devfund by having a source of income thru affiliate partnerships.

Just a thought - if we are going to be running bitcoin nodes and we did get an affiliates program going, perhaps we can allocate some of this dev fund from affiliates to retain technical input from a bitcoin core dev, say $10k/year?

I'd rather we repeat what Darkcoin did with Kristov Atlas. (when they raised 1000 DRK for his review),
instead of "employing" someone.

Interested people should approach us on their own (because they like our project, not because we are going to pay them),
and if they are going to make extensive technical reviews, we should start a donation based crowd funding as happened with Kristov Atlas.
(plus what will come out of the devfund).

I think I just done gone and got a full node running.  Just waiting for it to sync.

52.17.253.8

Its fully synced now.  Could you try and phone home please George?

Cheers

Everything is OK!

Thanks.

I WIN AT LIFE!

Thanks mate.  I'll keep it running for a minimum of 6 months.

That's the spirit!

can we create a new github account for all related to spreadcoin, would be making things easier Wink

gjhiggins has already done that:

https://github.com/spreadcoin/spreadcoin

The old abandoned github started by Mr. Spread can be found here:

BITSEED PERSONAL SERVER – BITCOIN EDITION

http://bitseed.org/product/blockchain-node-developer-version/

The Bitcoin Node edition of the Bitseed Personal Server comes preconfigured as a full bitcoin node. It keeps bitcoin running 24/7 without slowing your PC or notebook.

FEATURES

AUTOMATICALLY RUNS BITCOIN CORE FULL NODE CLIENT
EASY SETUP – JUST PLUG IT INTO YOUR ROUTER AND TURN IT ON.
LOW POWER – USES LESS THAN 10 WATTS
PERFECT FOR BITCOIN DEVELOPERS AND HOBBYISTS.

any thoughts on this ?
can be used for MN's ?

'certain people, who can not post, asked me to let you guys know'
(i know you are watching  Grin)

FYI

Very cool.

But the big difference between such a device and servicenodes
is that nobody will supervise that those devices are actually working 24/7.
And they won't receive constant reward for doing so.

Also, they are obviously targeted at homes, and not at servers,
so I am not sure about either connectivity and availability.

It is an interesting niche product which will help bitcoin for sure,
and it will help the producer even more.  Grin

And 10 Watts is a very good argument!

if you let me know what i need to get it all running - ill setup a system specifically for it ...

which means it will have a dedicated ip to get the node functional - especially for the next few months ... i can setup a few on different dedicated systems if you like ...

which simply means - i dont have any ip that i can give - until i set it all up ...

let me know mate ...

#crysx

1) Have a linux server ready with a static IP (don't use your home computer, even if it's 24 hours online)

2) compile the spreadcoin daemon, or download it. (It's included in the linux binary: http://www.spreadcoin.info/downloads/SpreadCoin64.tar.xz)

3) start the daemon by typing:

Code:
spreadcoind &

4) The daemon will probably complain that you don't have a spreadcoin.conf file in whatever data-folder spreadcoin has created (depends what usermode you are in)
(Spreadcoind will tell you the path to the folder)

5) So go ahead and create a spreadcoin.conf file in spreadcoin directory with this text in it:

Code:
rpcuser=SOMETHING
rpcpassword=VERYLONGCOMPLICATEDPASSWORD
maxconnections=1000
timeout=20000
port=41678
txindex=1

6) Restart spreadcoind, and test its progress now and then until its synched:

Code:
spreadcoind getinfo

If everything works, and you are fully synched, PM me your IP and I will check your node's accesibility,
and if everything is right, I will add you to the list of full spreadcoin nodes (fallback nodes)
998  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (official thread) on: May 06, 2015, 12:21:42 PM
hi all ...

just been informed that you may require nodes to be setup for testing again ...

we are happy to set them up and test with you ...

just need to know what is required and what needs to be done and what os - windows linux etc ...

#crysx

Testing will start in about a month (hopefully earlier).

What we are in need right now are full spreadcoin nodes.

If you can run a full spreadcoin node (with open port 41678) for the next few months, then PM me your IP.

Yes, it is my home PC.
And what about dynamic public IP in the office?

Hi, I am an early adopter, did not leave SPR even in its cloudy days.
I have not dived too deeply into technical aspects, though.
Only general principles.

So far I have run only wallet on my windows PC.
Right now I have on my router opened and forwarded port 41678.
I am willing to support SPR by leaving wallet on, the whole time PC is on. Or even a deamon if it is available for windows. Pretty much the whole day except sleeptime, and now also solo-mining on GTX 970.
My time is CET.
I have fixed public IP here.
If it makes sense, let me know and I will disclose my IP in a PM.

And I consider running SpreadNode or ServiceNode on office box, which I leave still on.
Unfortunately, only the public IP, but it is dynamic (ADSL). But I will gladly run the node there, maybe with 99,5% availability.
Will be dyndns enough?
I will gladly participate.

Regards,
Andy

You are talking about your home pc?
I'd rather not hardcode or publish the IP of your home pc.

But thanks for offering your help.

Your wallet is already helping the network by being connected this long and with open port.

Great!

It's ok, thanks for PM me your IP.
