Bits are currently worth too little to be used in daily life. We are used to spend values in the order of magnitude from 1 to hundreds on a daily basis, not tens of thousands.
Not so. Not only is the unit size perfectly workable there are millions of people used to prices of this order. Consider South Korea (1 USD is worth about 1000 KRW). I like the sound of bits much more than mBTC though, but I'm afraid the value needs to increase substantially to be able to use bits in daily life.
This rather depends on how you read "mBTC". I created a poll about a year ago to investigate and was stunned by the number of people that were actually thinking "em-bee-tee-see". I wonder if this is still the case today. |

Looks like it measures your number of coins combined with days destroyed - ie how long they've been sitting still while you held.
Why would they consider days "in the bank" as days destroyed? To be precise, "days" are not being destroyed, "bitcoin days" are. As a non-trivial output ages it accrues bitcoin days. Those bitcoin days are destroyed when the output is spent. |

For a single address with a single output, the score is the product of the number of bitcoins and the number of days since the output was created. Where there are multiple outputs, these scores are summed. One's score increases with the number of bitcoins held as well as with the number of confirmations on these held bitcoins.
Example (at the time of this post): Address: 1PHudb4xcvhwrVhPnWatrs7mnyzXyj2GEUOutputs: 1 Value: 0.71020249 bitcoin Age: 15 days, 13 hours, 40 minutes = 15.569444... days Score: 0.71020249 bitcoin * 15.569444... days = 11.05745821 bitcoin days (8.d.p). |

I had some time so I thought I'd make a chart myself. It's pretty crude and I imagine, if you're still motivated, that you'll produce something better. I've included early newlibertystandard.wetpaint.com prices too (2009-10-05 to 2010-03-02). Before bitcoinmarket.com, this was the primary price reference.  |

How difficult was it to trade back then?
Signing up with bitcoinmarket.com required only a username, a password, and an e-mail address. You could add bids and asks to a simple order book. Matching offers were settled manually using Bitcoin escrow and PayPal. Were there any 'big' trades of 10,000 or more?
I see some 10 000 BTC trades in the data I posted above. I remember there being a few 10 000 BTC offers on the order book when I started. If you're in the mood to process/analyse the data then I'd love to see a chart. |

Those numbers are really interesting. Which exchange? This was just a few months after the 10,000 bitcoin pizza.
Indeed, about 7 weeks after laszlo's famous pizza trade with jercos. I was using bitcoinmarket.com at the time. There were other options for buying/selling such as OTC, NewLibertyReserve, and the forum, but bitcoinmarket.com was the closest thing to an exchange. I have more old trade data if your interested, going back to about April, 2010. Volume is relatively low but one can't miss the wild yet largely forgotten July, 2010 rally. |

In accounting, a journal is a record of transactions ordered by date whereas a ledger is more like a journal's summary and could be considered akin to the UTXO. In most contexts this is a pointless nitpick, but on the topic of distinguishing between protocol-level concepts and higher-level abstractions I believe this extra precision is helpful. |

It depends on the amount and the context.
I mostly work in millibitcoins and have done since 2011:
e.g. "34.6 mills".
If an amount is a whole number of bitcoins I'll use this:
e.g. "4 BTC" or sometimes "4 bitcoins".
For tiny amounts such as fees I prefer microbitcoins and satoshis:
e.g. "25 mics" or "2500 satoshis".
If the value of a bitcoin rises sufficiently, perhaps to around 10 USD/mBTC, then I'll probably rebase to mics.

You've just made my day.  investment or start a research compagny in naturefriendly science and tech and education would be a thing i do too. we realy need to put those oil and gas- gmo-, global industry-, banking- and religion barons on their place and frack em... look what they do to our beautifull planet.... we realy need to hack the planet back
so if you have the means to do so... do it, think of those who'll be living here after you.
Each to their own. Like many on this thread, I'd care far more about the futures of myself and my loved ones than those of the billions of humans I don't know and never will. This isn't to suggest that an excellent environment isn't a benefit to us, just that a million dollars in our pockets will improve our lives vastly more than such research ever could. |
