341  Economy / Services / Re: ▶▶ Luckyb.it = SELL YOUR SIGNATURE = up to 0.1 BTC A MONTH = HIGHEST RATES! on: April 30, 2014, 04:32:20 AM
If I become a senior member before the end of the month, would I qualify for the higher rate?

I want to know the answer to that as well, as I will be a senior member 2 weeks from now. Smiley
342  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is my initial choice of BTC wallet "permanent" or can I switch later? on: April 30, 2014, 04:29:39 AM
Beginner's Q here; I've done a lot of reading and finally ready to create a wallet and buy some BTC.

But I'd like to know now 'permanent' my choice of wallet is: I've always liked full-feature stuff, so I was leaning toward Armory...but having to download the entire blockchain has swayed me toward Electrum instead...

I just want to know how "stuck" I'll be with my initial choice....can i move BTC between two wallets?  If I opt for Electrum now, but later decide that I want the full-feature option with Armory, how would I switch?

I suggest to use Bitcoin-Core. It need a blockchain but you can use Armory in a same time Smiley and Electrum.

Sending coins between wallets is easy as sending e-mails.

If you have any questions just ask Smiley
Regards.

I think for a relative newbie, I would advise against using Bitcoin Core, because downloading all that blockchain seems to be too much and seems to discourage many people who don't know about Thin Clients.

Very much agree.
It takes a pretty long time to download the blockchain even with the bootstrap torrent. I believe SPV like Multibit and Electrum are better choices for casual users and newcomers. Smiley

whiskers75 has left me negative feedback from some while ago with no reference.. The user is https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=56964

Actually just out of reference I'm pretty sure it had a working reference - I do remember looking at it was some months back. Considering that it's missing now (and the thread is not self-moderated) the only logical conclusion would be to assume you deleted it. Would you mind explaining why? Also, if it was an innocent post I don't see why one would delete it or at least raise the issue then (three and a half months ago). I dunno, seems a bit suspicious to me.

I heard that mods can see deleted post and all edit history.
So, maybe we could have a mod taking a look at that post...

It may not be okay to make that post public to us, but at least the mod can tell us what kind of post is that, like scam or personal insult or something else.

Not if you are mining myriad with x11 or qubit algo. Smiley

Won't mining using these algos not get your GPU to the same temperature as Scrypt?
If not, why would that be? Do they use less of the cpu?

Thank you!

Scrypt is more memory-intensive and so the GPU will draw more power and generate more heat.
347  Economy / Speculation / Re: Crossed 500 USD - Bull Market returns ? on: April 30, 2014, 04:02:12 AM
I have quite some buy orders from $400 to $300.
It is not a bad thing for me, if the price goes down a bit in the coming days. Wink

Place some more, between $150 and $300. A few weeks ago, after someone dumped BTC10,000 in BTC-E, the price hit $164 for a few second. Stayed at <$200 for a minute or so. So be patient, and you'll get your coins for dirt cheap rates.
where did you get information about someone with 10k BTC in BTC-e  Shocked
and he want to dump it? interesting Grin
I think you didn't read the line in his post where he mentioned " A few weeks ago " he's not talking about this will happen he's saying this already happened..! there is a difference ...
oh sorry, i missed that point  Sad
so someone dumped 10k in BTC-e, crazy. it was daily trading volume in BTC-e  Shocked
if something like this happen again, that will hurt BTC prices  Sad

Is it so ? BTC-e's daily trading volume is 10000 BTC ? I doubt. This is too big.

You can find the trading volume of btc-e and bitstamp here, and the average daily trading volume were like ~5K btc for the past 2 weeks.

On that day (Feb 10), bitcoin price dropped from ~700 to 102 in seconds, and recovered back to ~600 very soon. Smiley

350  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How do YOU know a wallet is safe to use? on: April 30, 2014, 03:34:51 AM
So I see disagreement about open source wallets and beta wallets - so let me ask you guys:

(1) What exactly IS the official site?  Bitcoin.org, Bitcoin.com?
(2) The wallet I downloaded and have been using is Bitcoin-Qt version v0.8.6-beta and the new one says it is 0.9 - and I thought I downloaded it from the "official " site.  Have I already screwed up?

The official site for Bitcoin Core (previously called Bitcoin-qt) is bitcoin.org, and the latest version should 0.9.1.
Each wallet has its own official site (eg. https://electrum.org/ for Electrum)
I personally think the only wallets you should use are like these: real wallets where you actually own your Bitcoins.
Using online wallets is the worst decision you can make.

I agree with that. Why go ahead and throw the control over your money that bitcoin gives you overboard again right away even before really getting started by trusting a third party with holding it for you?
That's not saying online wallet provider's are not to be trusted, it's more like: they are not necessarily safer from hacks than your local machine and they definetly are a much more attractive and bigger target.

Doesn't have to be bitcoin-core (formerly bitcoin-qt) if you don't want to lift the heavy weight of the full blockchain, but using a local wallet preferably on an offline machine, that goes online only spradically for synching/transfers alongside a safely created paperwallet to store BTC longterm on should be the way to go.

Exactly. A simple way to say that is: You don't have your bitcoin, if you don't control the privkey.
351  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: how does difficulty work exactly? on: April 30, 2014, 03:26:37 AM
huh, I always just imagined the code would be come more complex and harder to solve therefore making the difficulty higher then before.  This is a much more complex question then I'd assumed.

Indeed the code is pretty simple.
It just check the time taken for finding the 2016 blocks and update the "target" value accordingly.
352  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Mining? on: April 30, 2014, 03:23:17 AM
Been hearing alot about the Antiminer but I believe it would be best to just buy the coins yourself and hold.

+1. Buy and hodl is the best strategy for bitcoin investment IMO. Cheesy

Good job.

Many people don't understand bitcoin now, just like many people don't understand internet in the early days.  Grin

i have recently switched from block chain to coinbase and i am quite happy about that , block chainz wallet service has gone down hill

To be honest, most of the hacks are not on server side of bc.i.
355  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: blockchain account emptied.... on: April 30, 2014, 03:08:54 AM
hacked again...this time on blockchain...

Sorry to see your loss.
Have you use the same password somewhere else? Have you enabled 2FA on bc.i?
356  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin 2.0 on: April 30, 2014, 03:07:10 AM
Any new coin needs to be considerably better than Bitcoin.  Bitcoin has first mover advantage, publicity and the infrastructure.  Very few other coins come anywhere near.  Many people have now heard of Bitcoin and merchants are accepting it but only handful have heard of other crypto and even fewer merchants accept any of the others.

+1.
The first mover advantage is in fact something very very big.
Just think about Facebook and Youtube, and you will realize how big the advantage is.

i think you need to remember that theres not much you can do when something like this happens and take it as a learning experience. always learn and move farward. it was an expensive lost for sure

In fact, OP can take legal actions.
359  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Good day everyone! on: April 30, 2014, 02:56:05 AM
Welcome aboard.

Hope to learn more from staying here and reading different threads. I notice that the forum is sort of divided; most serious discussions seem to happen in the Bitcoin Discussion subforum and the altcoin and offtopic ones seem to be a horror fest of spam, misjudgments, scammers, liers, etc.

Many people and mods here simply ignored the whole altcoin section. Cheesy
360  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What moves the price of Bitcoin et al against the dollar? on: April 30, 2014, 02:44:08 AM
1.  Buying and selling BTC?
2.  Strong v. weak dollar?

Would govt regulation be beneficial for Bitcoin or be the death of it?  Thanks!

Well if you think about it... bitcoin reached a peak of over $1200 USD.. Then governments started creating rules and regulations, or simply throwing aside the work and just banning bitcoins.

The bitcoin price dropped almost by half within a few days. :/

These regulations affect bitcoin in the bad way, but I don't think it will lead to death of bitcoin. Smiley
