No gold or silver seams where I live so I have to mine something

Hi Guys,

I am re-compiling on Windows to get ready for some Bitfury's that should appear soon but I have run into problems with make. I can successfully compile and run cgminer versions up to 3.3.3 but after that all versions to 3.5.1 3.6.4 consistently fail with

"ws2tcpip.h is not compatible with winsock.h. Include winsock2.h instead."

There are a number of fixes around the Interweb but I would rather use the same fix that you guys must be using to build the exe's. I am using the same versions of mingw, gtk, etc as per the windows build doc and follow the guide without problems for versions to 3.3.3, all builds are clean onto a fresh Win 7 VM.

As an aside I am also noticing differences in the dll's included in the exe distro against those required from the windows build doc, not a biggie but something that needs to be added to a tidy up list at some point.
Bump

Con, Kano, any bandwidth left to throw me a bone, which fix are you using?
483  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Are GPUs still relevant and for how long on: October 19, 2013, 08:31:50 AM
The biggest issue with using GPUs for heat is that heating your house with electricity is pretty much the most expensive way to do it. As compared to natural gas (at least where I live) electricity is about 10x as expensive.

If you want expensive try oil heating Sad

No gas where we live so I though of GPU's mining alt coin for heat instead but then you can't hear the TV over heating  Cry

I am re-compiling on Windows to get ready for some Bitfury's

The precompiled Windoze binaries don't work?

The pre-compiled exe's work fine, but it is open source and I like to compile my own for a number of various reasons.

OK, that's cool.

I'm guessing you already looked in the windows-build file?

I'll just shut up now. Smiley
Good Luck,
Sam

The problem been around a while and I have not found the answer in this thread or any of the build docs, etc. I was trying to stay out of the dev's way until I really started to need it as they have been very busy doing all this fantastic work on ASIC support.

Thanks Hyena!

I now understand Mike's reasoning behind why he locked the topic. It might have turned into a technological spat on the merits of different methods but still quashes the discussion. I think that you were right to re-open as a poll.

My vote is for "A separate program that uses API to talk to Bitcoin-QT" as I see that is the closest match to "Bitcoin's Official client should be neutral to any commercial uses and entities"
490  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Payment Protocol discussion continued on: October 10, 2013, 07:24:08 PM
I think Mike did a great job by explaining everything related in the FAQ thread. Please don't spread FUD just because you personally disagree.

Explaining something is one thing, discussing it as a community where people other than devs have right to say a word is another.

I agree, I seem to have missed somewhere the explanation of why the other thread was locked, where has that discussion moved onto if not here?
491  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: FAQ on the payment protocol on: October 09, 2013, 07:00:38 AM
This solution is for lazy, unimaginative and conformist/convention minded kinds of people, i.e. the sort that aren't that attracted to Bitcoin at all yet.

You've just described the very people that I suspect some folks on the dev team and within the Bitcoin Foundation are trying to impress with this protocol: institutional investors and their related ilk in large online commercial concerns. I understand the desire some people have to see Bitcoin accepted in the wider world, but this isn't the way to do it. Some folks working with TLAs might be interested in this BIP also due to possibility of connecting real-world info to Bitcoin addresses and increasing their tracking capabilities on the blockchain.

+1   Well said!

If Bitcoin wants to be the first real independent world currency then it must standalone and ignore the interference and control of governments or commerce.

Hi i'm new. Sadly I missed the train with bitcoins early on so I never got to experience the fun of GPU mining early on Sad. I also do regret not buying BTC when they were down to $0.63. However i'm looking into bitcoin now! Also looking to purchase a few BTC so I have something to play with. Hopefully i'll get out of the newbie forum soon so I can have some fun discussions Smiley

Welcome, today is the best day to start something new, tomorrow will be a day too late Smiley
493  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Do you think BTC will hit $200? on: October 08, 2013, 05:12:48 AM
price recovered fast from crash and holding steady for now. Curious to see what happens next: another crash on news of Feds seizing 600K BTC from DPR or renewed confidence in BTC?

imo we won't see $200 any earlier than 2014

I suspect that the idea of using personal certificates to appease money laundering rules will hit the price.
