44  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Official CaVirtex.com Thread on: November 30, 2013, 06:44:32 AM
i really wish us in america had an exchange like cavirtex.com

i've checked it out and it looks great.   love that they're a registered business in canada.  full transparency is cool.
45  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Securing Wallet.dat? on: November 30, 2013, 04:19:43 AM
Good question.
You can be doubly sure that it's safe if you encrypt the .dat file itself... better yet, encrypt your entire Bitcoin directory.

47  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Thinking about getting out of mining... input? on: November 30, 2013, 01:51:41 AM
Sounds like you need to sign up to become a bitpay affiliate... then signup your: landlord, local grocery store, local Porsche dealership quit the job (unless you love it) and get out and live... or quit your job and travel on bitcoin and write a book about it etc... You may be that person in 20 years looking back going damn I had a good thing going

Wink
Good luck whatever your decision

you know what, i would love to cash out every thing bitcoin related i own.  i am worried about taxes and whatnot, so i haven't converted anything to fiat.
48  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Thinking about getting out of mining... input? on: November 30, 2013, 01:50:47 AM
i don't plan on selling through the forums anyway, but i don't blame you for being sketched.  these forums (no offence) are a cesspool of scammers.  buyers & sellers.  i've lurked here for years, seen it all, unfortunately.

where do people tend to sell their 2nd hand mining gear though?
49  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Thinking about getting out of mining... input? on: November 30, 2013, 12:43:49 AM
you guys are probably right.

i guess i've just lost interest.  i live in ny, so there's lots of vendors who accept btc, but to say i live off it wouldn't be accurate.  i don't do any face-to-face exchanges since i got ripped off last year, so i don't sell btc.  i don't sell btc to people online.  i've never actually made one american dollar from btc.  contrarily i have spent tens of thousands.

where do you guys think the best place is to sell miners?  ebay?

50  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Thinking about getting out of mining... input? on: November 30, 2013, 12:01:52 AM
I started mining with a 5880 about 3 years ago.
Been through the Butterfly Lab debacle (thought eventually my order did ship).
Now I have about a 4.5 TH/s pool.

The thing is... this thing takes time to maintain.  When a piece goes down, it's an hour or two to RMA.  An hour or two to set up.
It's stressful knowing that your main source of income is "broken".
I have a full-time job (now) and I am realizing that this might not be worth it.  On top of this, I was broken into already and had my miners snatched... this is something I don't want to live with any more.  I don't talk to my friends about my mining gear because I am paranoid about it getting stolen again.

I have one room in my apartment that I simply cannot go into because of the heat (which is awesome in the winter).

Is it worth it to stay in the game?  I'm exhausted with watching forums 5 hours/day seeing what new hardware is on the rise.

Bitcoins are literally making me go crazy.

Has any prolific (though I know I'm not "prolific") miners ever completely gone cold-turkey?  Sold their gear for BTC/fiat and just left the game?  What was that experience like?  Do you regret it?

Thanks! Smiley

Haven't received any PMs...
Still available!
52  Economy / Digital goods / WTS: $25 Saddleback Leather gift certificate on: November 29, 2013, 03:53:47 PM
PM if there's any interest.

Will sell for last trade in USD on BTC-E.

You go first, I go second.  Low value item like this should be enough to let you know I ain't here to rip no one off.  Smiley

Thank ya!
53  Economy / Services / Re: Want a Neptune but not a previous customer? I'll help at no additional cost. on: November 28, 2013, 08:28:32 PM
i can also help in this respect.  i bought a jupiter but I don't think I'll be buying a neptune...

are you charging a fee for your services?
I do not. The worst I do is ask for an optional tip at the end and I'm happy to do this whether I get the tip or not.
I was under the impression that KnC does not deliver anywhere?  Isn't it local pick-up or proxy mining only?
KNC is only offering shipping for the Neptunes, but your impression is also incorrect. For their previous miners they did offer shipping to anywhere, or almost anywhere at least, in the world.

that is what i meant.  i got my jupiter shipped to me after all...
ok, thanks for all the clarity! Smiley

55  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Huge price per gh/s increase!! on: November 27, 2013, 11:08:29 PM
Well it makes sense that with the value of BTC rising and the network hashrate not catching up fast enough, mining right now is more expensive then maybe it ought to be.

These things even out in time.

56  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Scammers on Ebay on: November 25, 2013, 04:50:13 AM
I have also have seen a lot of posts on Craigslist....Similar photos, similar text...WAY low price.  I emailed the guy on the Washington D.C.  CL and suggested we meet in person and never heard back from him ....LOL!

i don't blame any seller for not wanting to meet face-to-face with any inquirers through craigslist.  risky stuff.
57  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / [Price check] KnC Jupiters (500GH/s) on: November 25, 2013, 01:00:04 AM
I am wondering how much these are going for.

In your guys' experience; how much does BTC <--> Fiat affect the cost of mining gear?

Thanks for input! Smiley
58  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Jessica Irvine "Trust me" (But I don't have a clue what I am talking about) on: November 24, 2013, 06:54:33 PM
terrible that the media doesn't edit this kind of balogne.

oh well.
59  Economy / Trading Discussion / Necessity of innovation in the Buy/Sell sphere... on: November 24, 2013, 06:52:41 PM
as someone who has always been an early-adopter and an aspiring pioneer of cutting-edge ideas, i have come to understand that the 3rd party transaction marketplace is in need of an overhaul.

backstory: had some miners up for sale on craigslist about a year ago, was transparent in my dealings with all purchasers because i recognized (at the time) the vulnerability of BUYERS in the bitcoin market.  this transparency led to skype conversations and even some potential buyers coming to my place of residence to check out my miners.
fast-forward to a few days later when i come home from work and find that my mining rigs, along with my personal computer were all stolen.
police contacted and what have you.  because i am renting i didn't have any insurance.

feel-good moment: reconciled losses with fiat and when BTC hit $350 i sold to repurchase mining gear.  Smiley

what i am saying here, is that the onus of legitimacy always lies on the seller, and this is how it ought to be, but at the same time, pure legitimacy lies in the revealing of very personal information; information that comes in direct contradiction to some of the ideas that Bitcoin is rising from (anonymity!).

So how can the average buyer protect themselves, not from scam, but from personal identifiers being exploited (like in my case)?

I could go on, but I see this is a book already.

i'd like to hear your thoughts! Smiley

EDIT/TL;DR: Craigslist listing for one of my miners : Exposed address : Broken into : Can't sell anything with legitimacy, leading to the divulging of personal identifiers which people exploit.  How to get around this?

60  Economy / Securities / Re: [ActiveMining] The Official Active Mining Discussion Thread [Self-Moderated] on: November 24, 2013, 05:59:55 PM
ken,

i transferred my shares to amc-tender on bitfunder and since then I haven't heard or seen anything regarding what i can expect.  is there some way to verify that you're holding my shares and something didn't get screwed up along the line?

this is very concerning to me.

thanks,
warner
