1  Economy / Speculation / Re: bitcoins = tulips on: December 03, 2013, 05:15:16 PM
tulip bulbs can be grown, and regrown. so theres no fixed quantity.

the whole tulip mania started because the first introduction of tulips into europe was rare, with only a small number of bulbs at first. everyone wanted them, then as years passed the supplies increased. so of course there became a point where it became common for everyone to have tulips thus devaluing it because everyone could grow their own.

Franky read the wikipedia page and sources. Your backstory to the tulips appears to be incorrect.

The tulip mania was caused by the gov banning shorting then later changing the contract rules. Also no money or tulips ever exchanged hands.

The answers to your question depends on which exchange you are trading at. Problems with exchanges are not problems with bitcoin itself.
4  Economy / Speculation / Re: I know very few people here really care... on: November 19, 2013, 06:36:50 AM
What we are witnessing is the only way bitcoin could go from zero to hero. Each bubble crash cycle will get more people involved increasing the overall skillset. Yes, many will abandon after the next crash, just like they did after the last two. But not all, so the number of people using it as currency will grow. This pattern is now very obvious to anyone who has been watching for long enough. A better question is whether there is a term for this phenomenon and whether it has been studied before or is unique to bitcoin.

I do not mean to say there is zero chance bitcoin becomes useless sometime soon, but if it does it will not be for reasons of volatility and speculating.

If it is not a currency, then why does it have any value at all, other than as a ponzi scheme where new investors provide the gains for earlier investors?  Wink

When the market cap of those naive enough to buy this is saturated, then we play pop-goes-the-balloon.

It is functional as a currency. If it will be used in the future the value of each bitcoin must be much higher than now. The only way to get from 0 value to necessary value is via volatility.

I am not saying that Bitcoin doesn't show us the way towards a real decentralized currency. But Bitcoin ain't it and can't be, because there is no way to distribute the coins such that it could be, i.e. there are 7 billion people on this planet and by the time 1% of them own Bitcoin, the rest of them will be worth 1/1000000 if Bitcoin becomes the global currency. And Bitcoins are concentrated into investors hands, and investors don't spend all their networth as a currency. And if all the people don't use it as currency, then how do you invest with it and pay employees with it. Just think it out.

Distribution is the critical factor nowadays in any business. How did facebook win? Distribution!

How with the elite win when setting up the next currency regime for the world? Distribution!

First come first serve of a deflationary currency is probably the only fair way to distribute a new currency, if it were easy to convince people otherwise the SDRs would already be adopted. I imagine during the transition phase from gov fiat to the new currency the new currency will first be given as a benefit rather than the entire paycheck. What is your idea for a fair way to initially distribute?

Yes,  there is an interesting bitcoin to company gift card economy growing. The dollar should have been worthless for over 40 years now, the situation is unsustainable. It is in everyone's best interest, including central bankers, to have alternative means of doing business for when the dollar is finally done in.

I am not sure that 'safe' and 'android' should even be used in the same sentence  Cheesy

Agree. When you see your family photos uploaded to Google+ Circles without your knowledge or approval, you soon realize you have no control of any data or security on the device. Or when you realize you can download an app remotly to a stolen phone to track it's location and even hear what the thief is saying and take his photo.

So how would you use btc at a physical shop like a restaurant?

So you say no? I am talking about putting 100 mbtc or so. Safe and 4am walking around in a major city also should not be in the same sentence.

What is the safest android app that has had its code checked, if any? If there are other apps on the phone are there certain permissions that may be dangerous?
12  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: will the bitcoin reach $1000 one day...? on: November 17, 2013, 10:13:13 AM
Long term bitcoin still has upside of 100x -10,000x. It could also go to zero but zero is looking less and less likely. Short term anything is possible. In the next month it should trade between $100 and $2000.
