1  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive ASICMiner Blade Setup on: February 10, 2014, 02:01:13 PM
I need help guys, after hashinh for several days my cables at the molex splitters started melting.  Huh
See the OP again, the recommendations is NOT to use a molex connector. Plenty of links and information there.

It would power ONE. Remember you can use the 4 pin ATX mobo cable for one, and if you have am 8 pin you can power two with 2x4 pin.
Thank you for all the hard work and effort you have put in the OP. Do you think that, cutting a 6pin connector would be sufficient to power 3 blades, as a replacement for the molex?

Thank you for the reply. The quote got messed up for some reason. The 6pin connect has 3 blacks 3 yellow wires, they wont be able to handle intensity of 3 blades?
No. Each pair of yellow wires is only able to provide about 75W before it becomes dodgy. You're asking 360W from ~110W of cables.

Once again thank you for the clarification. I will buy you a beer if i manage to get something out of my horrible investment.

I swapped the psu with my desktop psu, i got the status OOO but now it just restarts itself after ~2 minutes of doing nothing. The mining proxy seems to cause my OS to freeze every now and then

Any ideas?  Huh

I tried to wire it as in the OP, molex splitter, two yellow cables going to the + of the blade and four black to the -. I always considered myself somewhat sloppy when it comes to dealing with hardware, it is possible i have messed it up with screwing? there are 4 of these screws on the connecter, what should be their position?

Facing the screws, the two left screws are GND, the two right screws are +12V

You don't need to connect all 4 terminals, you can use only one of each (as long as you have enough wires for 10A per Blade)

Im using 550W PSU, i have two of those, decided to go with them because they have two 12v lines each. Heres the exact model http://www.super-flower.com.tw/products_detail.php?class=2&sn=12&ID=110&lang=en

This PSU should be enough for up to 4 Blades

Btw status CHIP:OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO is displayed even if not hashing?

Yes. I don't know what's wrong if not the PSU. All the doc I've seen mentions either a faulty PSU or something awful when you only get x's instead of O's and it persists over cold restarts. Are you sure that they were OK in the first place?

About the polairty, isnt it the opposite? Because minus (-) is drawn on the left side on the back side of the blade, while + on the right one. Just opened a brand new blade, same situation status XXX. The first time i powered the other blade i remeber the psu's fan starting to move and the heatsink on the blade got warm, but i had issues with my router then. Ever since it just gets powered and the psu's fan is silent.Theres something else i remeber about the intial powering of the blade i remeber i didnt mount the screws, i just stuck the cables in (they seemed loosely), is it possible that i have messed up something with the cables  Huh

My source seemed reliable, i hope they are ok.

Theres something about the OP i couldnt understand "Remember to plug the 10A fuse [red disk] in, either way round will do." any clarification on that?

This is whats heppening right now. Strangly the psu fan doesnt move at all. The blade seemed to be powered, because i can access the configuration page. Cant figure out whats wront.

It looks like your chips aren't getting enough power. Status should be like:

Code:
Chip: OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

And you have

Code:
Chip: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

It seems that your PSU is providing enough power for the Ethernet / control logic to work, but not the chips. The fact that the PSU fan is not spinning is probably because your PSU is at very low load (since the Blades aren't hashing).

How did you power the Blades, i.e. how many +12V and GND lines for each Blades, how many Blades and wattage of your PSU?

Could be better, but I think the general advice is to blow along the direction of the heatsink fins.  You might need something with denser airflow.

in the field "user:pass" you should enter your login details to slush's pool? Like that "sampleuser:password123,sampleuser:password123" ? Not workers' details?

That is where you would put your worker details.  sample_1:pass,sample_1:pass, use your worker info.  You may need to set up a stratum proxy though, not sure if slush has getwork ports open still.

Its a high rpm fan i hope the airflow would be sufficient in density.

The stratum proxy is running in the background in cmd window. The blade doesnt mine, just configured one as in the OP.Could it be firewall?

Thanks for the advice.

Hey guys. Is it a good idea to cool my blades with standart fan like this one http://www.mh-china.com/UploadFile/2006112010464134010.jpg ? i got 5 blades on hand

Another newbie question:

Definitely check local stores and places like Newegg for Black Friday specials. Each blade will pull about 80-90W and about ~7A. For 5 blades you will probably have roughly 450W and 40A draw. The trouble with this though, is even though a power supply is rated for 450W and 40A, if you have it under this load constantly you will run into heat issues and fry the thing. Leave a decent amount of overhead between the load you expect and the power supply rating. So for a constant 450W load I would recommend probably no less than a 600W power supply, and going higher wouldn't hurt. Even a 600 will probably still run pretty warm at that load.

The next issue is making sure that the 12V rails can handle the current draw that 5 blades will create. Each blade will theoretically draw around 7A, but the same issue I mentioned before still applies, if you keep the rail under the full load that it is rated for constantly, you will melt wires and capacitors for sure. I would try to find a power supply that has around 50A total rated current on the 12V rails. The ones I have laying around look to be around 30-40A total but none of them are high-end by any means. You certainly may find a mid-to-high grade power supply that meets these requirements. It may also be worth considering that you could split the blades between two power supplies if you happen to find some that are cheap in the 300-400W range and have maybe 20-30A rated 12V rails, as these would be considerably cheaper, would just be up to you to do the math.

Sorry I can't provide specific models that would be good. I didn't go shopping for power supplies when I got started with mining as I only had one blade and was able to power it off what I already had at home.

Thanks for the heads up mate. In the same store they offer Cooler Master GM750 for about 73Euro which has 62A on the 12V(single) rail according to a french website and 6x4pin connectors. Any thoughts on that one? Regards

Hey guys. Im have close to zero experience with mining but for some reason i decided to give mining a try. Today i got my hands on 5x block erupter blades (v2 i believe). I still have to purchase psu for them, i dont have a backplane so i would go the other way around with the 4pin connectors. Theres a promotion going on in a local store that sells Cooler Master Silent Pro M2, 520W for about 60euro including free shipping, it has 5x 4 Pin connector but unfortunately only one 12v rail. I guess it woulnd be suffecient to power all 5 of the blades?  I have another older psu that is sitting vacant in my room, i belive it can power 1 of the blades. Can you please suggest a reliabe psu? I want to order it asap. I guess there would be lots of other question, but i think thats the most important one so far. Thanks in advance.
