So if my coinbase has an easy pw, when I do a transaction someone may use the public key to track me and try to crack my pw?

Is that the way it works?

New to this but want to be secure.

Has anyone used bitcoin to purchase real estate or sold real estate for bitcoin?

I have a property that I was thinking of putting up for sale and to only accept BTC.

Its a three double bed next to the new Chinese business quarter in London Docklands. Next to the Thames river and there is a new super fast train service that crosses London and we have a station nearby all of which is due for completion in the next year or so.

750 BTC. Just think that wouldn't have got you a pizza 2 years ago.

Using the funds to buy some bitcoin Neptune mining gear. Grin

Wonder how the transaction would work..  If 60-day closing, price could change quite a bit after initial offer was accepted in bitcoins.  Would have to be an all bitcoin transaction, banks would be funny using this with financing I think.

I also have some property I would sell for bitcoins too.

Also wonder about the tax implications..  No taxes??  How about paying off the rest of mortgage at closing?  Bank be okay with you accepting bitcoins?

How about a coinbase wallet?   Is it secure?

Its as secure as the owner is. But remember, if you don't control the keys, you don't control the bitcoin.

Blockchain.info is a much better wallet because you get to keep control of your keys

And your blockchain.info wallet is as secure as the password you set it up with?

Sorry for the noob q's

I am not sure what you are looking for but this my help you out. http://www.wheretomine.com/

That site is great. Thanks.  How do I figure out the mhs for my system?

Also, I looked a lot into bitcoin equipment but decided against mining bitcoin.  What type of equipment could I buy to mine for peercoin or primecoin for example?
7  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Ming Alt Coins on: November 29, 2013, 03:38:26 AM
Is there a list out there of the most effective ways to mine some of the different coins?

I am wondering more for some of the coins with smaller market cap.
8  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Cracking the Code on: November 28, 2013, 05:48:29 PM
One thing I will say is thay with this much money involved and the value continuing to rise, there is a HUGE incentive for people to try and find a way to do an attack.  Since it is web based anyone in the world can try to attempt this.  Think of all the mafia groups all over the world.

I do not fully understand the way bitcoin works enough to say if it is possible or not but it is certainly something we should all think about.

It would be nice if this could be a constructive discussion instead of resorting to name calling.
9  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / What will happen when... on: November 28, 2013, 08:26:46 AM
mining stops being cost effective?

I imagine people would stop mining which would drop difficulty and allow a profit to be made once again?  Eventually this should stabilize to a pretty steady rate of profit?

Thoughts?
10  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Cracking the Code on: November 28, 2013, 05:57:35 AM
Because mathematically you need to know the prior block hash before you can compute the next one.

And unless you have > 50% of the total network hash rate, then you can't permanently compute the next hash faster than the network can.

Note you can with declining probability P (< 1) compute the next hash faster than the network with less than 50% of the hash rate. Since probability is multiplicative, then doing this for two consecutive blocks is P x P, e.g. 0.1 x 0.1 = 0.01 so from 1 in 10 for one block rises to 1 in 100 chance for two blocks. Ditto for N consecutive blocks, e.g. for four blocks then 0.1 x 0.1 x 0.1 x 0.1 = 1 in 10,000 chance.

Anony, thanks for the explanation.

So if someone has over 50% of the total network hash rate is that something to be concerned about?  Do you think it will ever happen?

Could someone explain in layperson terms why it is not possible to figure out a key to solve all future hashes or blocks and create bitcoins at will?

Not sure if I phrased my question correctly but hopefully you know what I mean.

When it comes to transferring money is bitcoin superior to using one of the many aervices where you can send money by email?

Many of those seem to have no fees.  Not sure if it is instant or not.  Any opinions?

When it comes to transferring bitcoins the yes bitcoin is superior to everything. If you want to convert those bitcoins to fiat then things become a little more complicated.

Penandpaper would you mind expanding on this?  I am looking to learn more about this.  How is it superior to everything else when it comes to transferring money?

I think the way you are going about this is going to end up costing you money. Are you really going to invest your money based on what random people on the internet tell you? Investors that just throw money at something they know nothing about generally lose that money. Just look at all the newbies that spent thousands of dollars on mining equipment only to discover that they will never make a profit.

Learn about the industry first, then think about what to invest in.

Also I am wondering about the mining is dead statement..  Is it really dead?  Isn't mining critical to the bitcoin universe since it is how transactions are processed and new coins are made?  There must still be profit there to keep people interested?

This is what I'm talking about. You are ready to throw money at bitcoin mining without even knowing if you will ever even get it back. Then you go and listen to some yahoo that says "mining is dead". You don't understand what he means and I suspect he doesn't either. Mining is not dead. There is more computing power devoted to mining bitcoins than anything else on this planet. It is certainly not dead. Can you make money mining? Probably not, especially because you don't know anything about it.

Thanks for the response.  I questioned that statement because it did not
make sense to me

So if it is not dead then it is possible to still make money with it.  I am trying to find the best way to do that.  That is why I am asking here before throwing my money into it.  I am on here trying to learn more and see if it is something I want to do.  You make it sound like I am a fool giving money away.

NO NO NO.
You are getting it all wrong.  Do NOT buy from coinbase, PLEASE.  They are turning into a dictatorship.
If you buy coins at a low price, and the price jumps up, coinbase will rape your money with an excuse of "high risk transaction".  If you don't believe me, look at the dozens of other members' complaints.

I'd suggest localbitcoins, and this

Localbitcoins seems pretty good but the prices are high.

What is the process for buying bitcoins on here?  I am looking to purchase two bitcoins.

What are some ways that the system for buying and selling bitcoins could be made easier and more safe from being ripped off?  Seems like improving this area could you really get a lot more people willing to try bitcoin.  I am new to this so I don't know the answer but I think about it a lot.
15  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Transfers on: November 28, 2013, 04:49:47 AM
Most Bitcoin transactions have fees, people mainly use it for investments or gambling. If you do not participate in any of those, use something with no fees.

I thought one of the selling points for bitcoin was its easy, instant transfers to anyone, anywhere?

Would you buy some mining equipment, buy a share in a mining coop, or buy coins?

Definitively not share in a mining coop, you wont mine as much Bitcoins as you pay for the share in a mining coop (you can buy the shares only with Bitcoins)

If you buy the mining equipment with USD, you might be in profit depending of the price. Use mining calculators to find out

The coop I was looking at would be paid for in USD.  It seems like it would be profitable but the calculation depends on future difficulty and future price and results vary wildly based on my different inputs.  I am more concerned w difficulty since I am confident in long term performance of bitcoin.  Difficulty is rising so fast..

Also I am wondering about the mining is dead statement..  Is it really dead?  Isn't mining critical to the bitcoin universe since it is how transactions are processed and new coins are made?  There must still be profit there to keep people interested?

Where do people here get their coins from?  I set up a coinbase account and am waiting for my bank acct to be verified.  Seems like one of the best ways.  Coin to cash sounds good but looks a little amateur on the how to section of the webpage.  Local bitcoins looks interesting.  What is the most cost effective way to buy bitcoins?  I am looking to buy whole coins.

Hi Everyone,

Wondering what other people on this forum would do right now if they had $5,000 that they wanted to invest in bitcoins or xpm, ppc, etc..

Would you buy some mining equipment, buy a share in a mining coop, or buy coins?
