7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It's about time to turn off PoW mining on: September 20, 2014, 01:37:09 AM
Several issues.

The claim that PoW is "inefficient" is economically naive, at least in the form presented here.  The exact cost per transaction is difficult to determine at the moment because of price fluctuations, but ultimately the efficiency of the network will settle to a value determined by the total value transferred over total cost of running the network. The cheeky claim that it "costs hundreds of time more than a credit card transaction" can hardly be taken serious if it is presented without any kind of calculation, as was done here.

Re: network security. PoW at the scale of the current Bitcoin network is de facto secure (no attack ever succeeded, no realistic attack vector that does not involve massive clandestine hardware production is known), and it is getting more secure each day as additional hashpower comes online. "Increased" security through PoS is an advantage that holds little weight then.

On the other hand, there are numerous disadvantages of PoS. The most significant ones I can think of:

Coin distribution by stake, instead of coin distribution by work. There is something intuitively unappealing about handing the highest rewards to the already largest holders of an asset, and there is something intuitively satisfying about rewarding those who "work the hardest". Don't take my word for it, ask around. This is probably the most basal reason why a majority of the Bitcoin community dislikes PoS.

Consensus forming in the case of competing chains. From a technical perspective, probably the strongest argument. Summarized in the well know form as "The trouble with Proof-of-stake is that there is nothing at stake" if there is a need to form a consensus which of two or more competing chains is the canonical one. I'm not informed enough on the current state of the discussione to know if there have been, generally accepted, solutions to the problem, but the entire problem is alien to PoW because hashpower/energy is a limited resource.

I agree. Gold costs a huge amount of investment capital to mine, hence the strength in the long term store of value. bitcoin is the strongest network only because of asic  POW. The 51% attack would cost way too much time and investment with zero financial incentive. Security of the network is the most important foundation of any cyrpto. There's more scalability than security concerns with blockchain bloat and underfunded core devs as the network grows. I assume this will be resolved in time, but am I foolish to do so? POS incentives are for hoarders and savers, which leads to a lack of trading volume. As we see in economics,a country's GDP is what gives intrinsic value to any paper fiat. So incentives for savers prevents growth in value. I say this even though i'm very bullish with btsx atm due to my interest with DACS. Bitcoin will be no1 king of crypto for ever imho. First mover advantage means alot in this game. I will be surprised if bitcoin loses highest market cap position 20 years from now.
8  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Zero Fee 0% Bitcoin Exchange on: June 03, 2014, 03:41:50 PM
The answer to everyones questions is to build a decentralized exchange....... Where traders provide their cpu to power the network in return for zero fees. There's already a few companies working on this idea, these exchanges which will allow people to hold their own btc on their client inside their own computer and trade with others directly with no middle man. A few decentralised exchanges are being developed and tested. Can't wait until one launches. Meta Lair will be the first decentralised exchange and I'm sure many others will follow using the same technology.
9  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: WTF Cointerra on: May 23, 2014, 04:05:17 PM
Where is my refund cointerra? Been waiting since February with no update. You just ignore all my emails and voicemails. Scam terra more like. Refund your customers.
10  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / COINTERRA MAKE US WAIT EVEN LONGER on: May 23, 2014, 01:22:55 PM
Cointerra told me today they cannot refund and need to wait until the 12 week mark before I can expect to see a refund. Then continue to ignore me again when I reply. What kind of company does this to their customers.  We deserve to know what going on. It is ameture companies like cointerra that give bitcoin a bad name. Anyone else failing at getting a refund or failing to get a response from cointerra?
11  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: CoinTerra announces its first ASIC - Hash-Rate greater than 500 GH/s on: May 22, 2014, 12:02:27 PM
OMG more Plan B\

Why are so many companies giving away free extra asic miners?  Is it to trap them for more future pre-order equipment promising more and more power

Simplest answer: cash flow problems.

Simple answer, they need more time to get in as much cash as possible before they dissappear without refunding anyone.
12  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ARE YOU A COINTERRA BURN VICTIM ? on: May 22, 2014, 11:59:45 AM
How stupid do cointerra think their customers are? This so called backlog means they are broke. 8-12 weeks to get in and scam as many people before they file for bankruptcy.

Dear Ed,

We are getting in touch with you because you have previously requested a refund of your CoinTerra hardware order.

At the time of your refund request, it was likely communicated to you that we typically take between 2-4 weeks to process refunds. Unfortunately, we received a larger quantity of refund requests around the time that we started to ship our April batch of TerraMiners to customers, and as a result we are running behind on processing them, as they are refunded in the order in which the refund request is received.

Your refund request is still active, and we are currently anticipating between 8 and 12 weeks processing time for some refunds.  We will continue to work towards processing the refunds as quickly as possible.

However, we would also like to share with you two incredible limited-time offers that, should you choose, will quickly get you back on track with your bitcoin mining activities:

Option 1

Some customers requested their refund because of the hash power deficit of 400 GH/s in the 1.6 TH/s units. With manufacturing running at full capacity we are now able to ship the 1.6 TH/s TerraMiners immediately from stock, and so for a limited time, if you are a US resident customer* who purchased at the original price of $5,999 (plus shipping) we can ship you 2 x your original order of TerraMiner IV 1.6 TH/s Bitcoin miners with FREE ground shipping on the additional unit(s).  That’s 3.2 TH/s for the same price paid for 2 TH/s!

An order for 1 x TerraMiner IV at $5,999 entitles you to receive a second TerraMiner IV with FREE UPS Ground shipping. An order of 2 x TerraMiner IV’s with total price of $11,998 + shipping entitles you to receive 4 x TerraMiner IV 1.6 TH/s shipped immediately with FREE UPS Ground shipping for the additional 2 units.

Option 2

Some customers requested a refund because for whatever reason they were unable to run the TerraMiners in their location.  We have been working on a solution to this problem and you may have read the announcement on May 12th that we have now launched a new service offering cloud-based Bitcoin Mining Contracts through CoinTerra Mining at:

http://mining.cointerra.com

A cloud-based mining contract is a solution where you receive regular payouts at the contracted hash power for a fixed term, powered by our scalable TerraMiner farm in a 24 x 7 datacenter: No equipment, no electricity costs, and no hands-on system management required.

For a limited time we are offering the equivalent of your purchase price of each TerraMiner converted to the 2 TH/s mining contract which is currently priced at $7,999 - a savings of $2,000!  If you have 2 x TerraMiner IV’s then you will get 2 x 2 TH/s plans, etc.

To discuss your order, please reply to this email with your preferred phone number and time of day to reach you (please include your time zone) and we will get in touch. If you are only able to communicate via email (for example, if you are not comfortable speaking in English) then please reply to this email and we will get back in touch.

In the event that you these offers do not interest you, we completely understand and we will keep you on the refund list and we thank you for your ongoing patience and understanding as we work to stay ahead in the incredibly fast-moving Bitcoin ecosystem.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions.

What so they expect us to wait another 8-12 weeks so they have time to fold the company.

This is way beyond the 30 day legal limit.

Anyone who is waiting I suggest you file with bbb and texas attorney general if you ever want your refund

This pretty much means they are broke and do not have the money to refund us. Also it is illegal. They cannot do this.
15  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Is bitcoin really worth mining? CoinTerra and Cex.io Analyized on: May 21, 2014, 11:25:15 PM
BUYER BEWARE. do not buy from cointerra. Cointerra are ignoring all emails and stopped sending refunds.

do not risk your money
16  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Cointerra still processing refunds on: May 21, 2014, 10:53:00 PM
I'm almost certain the refund was in fiat since the prices on cointerra's site are all in USD and because they use bitpay to process payments and automatically adjust the BTC price based on the current exchange rate.

I wouldn't complain if I'm wrong though. Wink

Update 2013-11-11: Peter from Cointerra finally got back to me and said they will send me a refund in the form of a check for USD.

I wish Peter would get in touch with me. I paid them in December after requesting a refund and sending them my bank info I heard nothing.

I've been waiting months. No refund or response. I spoke to them today and they are still refusing to send my refund I am not one to take legal action but I complained to the texas attorney general in the hope I'll see my money again.
17  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Cointerra.com is now offering cloud mining on: May 21, 2014, 10:38:49 PM
Stay away from cointerra!  They are not to be trusted. This is also a deal that will leave you broke. Their cloud mining is not profitable.  ROI is just not achievable with what they are offering. Their dodgy miners that break down, lack of support and shady 30 day warranty should scare people away from their miners too. Unfortunately I bought from them in December and still not been refunded.
18  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ARE YOU A COINTERRA BURN VICTIM ? on: May 21, 2014, 10:06:14 PM
Earlier today. 8-12 week back log. Ask your lawyer about how long they are allowed to keep our refunds and let me know please
19  Economy / Scam Accusations / BEWARE!!! Do Not Buy From Cointerra on: May 21, 2014, 09:53:16 PM
Anyone who may be considering purchasing a cointerra miner or contract.

Just Stop now......Do not buy anything from cointerra

They are not refunding anyone and not replying to anyones messages.

Something isn't right. They have stopped replying to emails and there phone line goes to voice mail.

Do not buy anything until we know what's going on at cointerra.

20  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ARE YOU A COINTERRA BURN VICTIM ? on: May 21, 2014, 06:49:01 PM
So I think this makes week 7 this week and no refund...they did offer to be more communicative, though so far that hasn't actually meant anything...

I just spoke to CoinTerra and the actual wait has gone up to 12 weeks from 4. This is a scam and we need to get together and take group legal action.  Before they disappear. PM me if your interested
