1  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: (Review/Guide) WhatsMiner M20S 68.0 Th/s, 3260 W Bitcoin (SHA-256) ASIC miner on: January 05, 2020, 04:44:09 AM
Just to report that i did update successfully my M20S with the latest firmware and the machine has been running well for more then 48 hours.

From the support page, it says "The latest firmware optimizes machine power consumption and enhances machine stability". Convinced me to give it a shot. It was the first time i was updating a firmware on a WhatsMiner, so i'm going to give some details if that can help someone.

On this page i could see that a new firmware was release on December 11th 2019:
https://www.microbt.com/server/firmware.html

Question was do i own an H3 or H6? Looking at the miner externally, does't seems to be any reference to the control board version. Thought i was going to have to open the casing but found an easier way. First, i installed the WhatsMinerTool-4.2.5 (from support page) on a Windows machine. Then i scanned the ip range and found the miner. Finally looked at the listed M20S miner (scrolling right in the list) a column labeled "Version Info" that shows a long code beginning with H3 or H6.

Knowing i own an H3 M20S, downloaded the upgrade-whatsminer-h3-20191211.17.bin file from the firmware support page. Used the "Upgrade" button in the Windows tool, selected the .bin file and completed the upgrade process with success.

GH before firmware update (original firmware) : 67500
Power before : 3268W
GH after firmware update : 68700
Power after : 3221W

So, i roughly gained 1 TH for the same consumption.

Looks like those miners don't really like the heat. That would explain the fan locked at 100%. Nothing to compare with D3, S9, or even L3+, which can all stand 60 to 70 degrees easily.

When the chip temp goes over 50, I noticed some drops in hashrate. The closer you get to 60, the bigger the drops become. I also got a couple of time some "??" instead of "oo" in the ASIC status (forgot to take a screen, was to busy restarting the damn thing as fast as possible !). Anyone with the same issue ?

Anyway, I plugged back the rear fan, and I will be more careful about when I turn the AC off  Cheesy

On another hand, I have never got any problem so far while running under 50, and it is mining really smoothly in the low 40.

I know it's bloody hot where I live, but with all the post I saw about people trying to figure out how to keep the fan quiet, you might want to be careful in your experimentation if you don't want to fried your brain new unROIed B3...

Thanks, your right, the B3 really doesn't like heat. Noticed the same when my temperature reached 50. Heading today with my B3 in a facility where sound is not a factor.

I tried, it does not work on the B3. Both fans still at max speed.

Tried this:

"bitmain-fan-ctrl" : true,
"bitmain-fan-pwm" : "50"

and

"bitmain-fan-ctrl" : true,
"bitmain-fan-pwm" : "50",

I thought a comma , was missing behind the "50" but no change ...

Same for me, tried:

]
,
"api-listen" : true,
"api-network" : true,
"api-groups" : "A:stats:pools:devs:summary:version",
"api-allow" : "A:0/0,W:*",
"bitmain-fan-ctrl" : true,
"bitmain-fan-pwm" : "50",
"bitmain-use-vil" : true,
"bitmain-freq" : "_ant_voltage=0706",
"bitmain-voltage" : "0706",
"multi-version" : "1"
}

and this:

]
,
"api-listen" : true,
"api-network" : true,
"api-groups" : "A:stats:pools:devs:summary:version",
"api-allow" : "A:0/0,W:*",
"bitmain-use-vil" : true,
"bitmain-freq" : "_ant_voltage=0706",
"bitmain-voltage" : "0706",
"multi-version" : "1",
"bitmain-fan-ctrl" : true,
"bitmain-fan-pwm" : "50"
}

But no change, fans seems to be still at 100%. Anyone was able to change fan speed?

Sounds like you need to disable fan control?

Maybe something like:

"bitmain-fan-ctrl" : false,

Just tried to put :

"bitmain-fan-ctrl" : false,

Rebooted the miner and nothing changed, still very very noisy.

Went to /var/log/ to look for any clue... but nothing useful.
