521  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] AIRcoin - 19th Largest Cryptocoin by Marketcap on: March 21, 2014, 08:05:53 AM

Hey guys I've been mining at air.ctrlaltdefeated and this message just popped up so i figured i would let every one know about it. "Probably going to shut this pool down today instead of upgrading to the new wallet. If you guys would please start withdrawing your coins so that I don't need to manually pay everyone out it would be appreciated."

ffs seriously @ctrlaltdefeated ?

you suck!

Just signed up and started mining on Carbonshark and Cryptopool no problems and they have a lower hashrate so are good choices to spread the hash out more evenly.

I won't be using any ctrlaltdefeated pools again, it sounded like a hissy fit.

Wow thats a bit unwarranted. Both you guys have had 0 fee's for as long as the pool has been around. I've just started a second job and don't have time to maintain pools any longer. If one of the miners hadn't brought the wallet update to my attention I likely wouldn't have even known and we probably would have forked. Would you have preffered that happen instead? Air is the only one of my pools that has any hashrate at all and taking a look at my server cost it was fast becoming an expensive hobby. It should be noted that out of the 9 miners left on my pool only 5 of them are paying fee's and its been that way for weeks now. I'm not a bussiness and I cannot afford to run at a cost.

As far as a "mature" response goes, There's not a whole lot I can fit into that small message box that gets the point across and doesn't make me sound like an asshole.

Thanks for the appreciation though.

how is it expensive?.. firstly, i would have been happy to go 1% fee (which FYI i was donating for a while)

secondly, a pool this size being really expensive? i could run it off my spare laptop, let alone one of my PC's or rigs, easily....

and do you seriously not know you can put a full post on 'home' and say 'we're shutting down, read the post'Huh

sad to hear you're having troubles though, i was really enjoying the general stability.. and you WERE a lot more active previously haha

As another pool op I can attest, yes, it is expensive, both in time and money.

In terms of horsepower required, yes, you can run a single, not-too-busy pool from a decent PC or laptop running Ubuntu.  But this isn't really an option as most ISP's don't give you a dedicated IP address and generally aren't too keen on people hosting websites from their home internet connections.  Some do allow this, yes, but the upload speeds are usually pretty crummy and home DSL/cable connections generally are not super reliable.  Remember this isn't just some website with a few dozen visitors per day, this is a hosted service that people are expecting to be running 24/7.

So, the only real option to host mining pools is to rent a VPS or dedicated server somewhere.  Unless you get a really lucky break, you'll never make enough $$ from just a single pool to cover server costs, so you end up running several.  Some coins suck and are just a waste of server resources, no matter how many people are on the pool.

Your hosting provider only accepts $USD, not AIR or MEOW or whatever coin you're running on your pool, so you have to make withdrawals from your pool wallets regularly, exchange for BTC, then Coinbase it for $USD to pay your bills.

Then you have to answer support emails.  And haunt the forums making sure you're not missing any required wallet upgrades because a lot of coin devs don't notify anyone other than posting in their ANN thread.  And install those wallet upgrades.  And deal with dudes who don't understand why their block erupters aren't getting any shares on the AIRcoin pool.  And fix it when MPOS glitches out on autopayments.  And unlock people who forgot their password.  And unlock people who forgot their password.  And unlock people who forgot their password.  And unloc . . . <sigh>

Anyway, rant over.  It's a thankless job.  I cannot blame ctrlaltdefeated if he wants to get out of the biz.
522  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][PIR] ---- PirateCoin | Exchange listed ---- Arrr! on: March 21, 2014, 04:47:32 AM
Okay so it sounds like we need to:

1.) Change the logo back to what it was and do not have anything to do with The Pirate Party
2.) Change the Piratecoin abbreviation to ARR and get a new wallet compiled
3.) Get the new web site up and keep it up
4.) Get a blockchain explorer (if the original is still down)
5.) Decide together on how to promote and expose this coin to more people
6.) Find something good to be involved in with the coin (make it useful)

I personally do not like the idea of changing the whole name of the coin. I like Piratecoin better than Bootycoin and think it is a better choice. But I'm just one vote and the majority should rule.

I would just like to see some unity here and to get things running normally/smoothly like they were for a few weeks at least when this coin first came out. Then we can focus on getting bigger.

I agree, I think these are the best next steps.

I really don't think keeping the name PirateCoin necessarily "endangers" us in being associated with the Pirate Party political movement.  In fact, I think it's probably best we distance ourselves from them entirely - if they want their own coin, they can (and should) make it and manage it themselves using their already-established democratic process.  I, too, had never heard of it until I read about it here.  Must not be particularly popular in the U.S.

Personally, I really dislike the idea of changing to Bootycoin.  There is already a sexy-pirate-themed BootyCoin (http://www.bootycoin.com).

523  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [PRE-ANN][FER] FERENGICOIN on: March 20, 2014, 10:08:23 AM
Error: To use ferengicoind, you must set a rpcpassword in the configuration file:
./coin.conf
It is recommended you use the following random password:
rpcuser=ferengicoinrpc
rpcpassword=8vHurViyBjyFMqjyxMHmw9Vkb6JvZV3svheYyP4Ucdy7
(you do not need to remember this password)
The username and password MUST NOT be the same.
If the file does not exist, create it with owner-readable-only file permissions.
It is also recommended to set alertnotify so you are notified of problems;
for example: alertnotify=echo %s | mail -s "Ferengicoin Alert" admin@foo.com

Fail

EVERY coind says that when you first fire it up.  Follow the instructions, create a coin.conf with rpcuser and rpcpassword parameters.

My personal opinion is that BobDylan continues to control the Facebook and Twitter account for the time being.  I suggest he does not hand that information over to anyone.

The original dev (motd2k) has pretty much acted like a douchebag to the community since the coin began.  Someone designed a new logo, started making progress without him and he just shutdown the website like an asshole.

Fortunately, I foresaw this and made a copy, and instructed BobDylan to change the Facebook and Twitter account passwords before motd2k could take down those as well.  For all we know, Mike_Rotch is just another alias motd2k uses, or a friend, trying to get the passwords back now that he's locked out.

Motd2k needed to go, so we are kicking him the fuck out.  The new website is http://www.arrcoin.com.  I have the source code and I am working on recompiling the wallet to update the coin's symbol to ARR.  I have also spoken with AllCrypt about changing the symbol and they're totally cool with it.

This is what we pirates refer to as MUTINY.

do me a favor and look at page 2 of this thread and search for my name and then you can rethink if me and motd2k are friends...

and fine if you wanna play kindergarden then keep it! but don't come crying to me after you regret the descission...

i just really don't understand whats so hard making community decissions?! you could've stated your consurnes much earlier and could also discuss things like writing to allcrypt with the community. instead of acting on your own behalf what will surely benefit the credebility here...don't you think so too?!

with such actions you are not behaving any better than motd2k...ever thought about that?!

I at least was honest with the whole community and like i already said, i could've said nothing about what i knew and the coin would've probably simply died...

i'm really astonished that you think this bullshitting will get us any further...
and i really ask myself what for have i been doing work? trying to communicate every step and connecting with the community members involved? didn't you read a few pages back?

and again i turn to the community and ask for your oppinion on this?

I definitely did read a few pages back, and it sounds like you were talking about turning this coin over to the Pirate Party movement, and also sounded like you really had no idea if they wanted it or not.  I waited a few days to see how this panned out.

I have not spoken up until now simply because I wanted to make sure some things were in place.  To be more specific, gaining access to the Facebook and Twitter accounts, and hopefully the domain name before making any statements (although, looks like that is not happening, hence we now have arrcoin.com).  I figured Motd2k would end up tearing down everything he could if he discovered someone else wanted to take over the coin, and I was right.

And besides that, scheming secretly with others is what pirates do Smiley

See for yourself.  Mined over 1.5 million coins already

http://fer.pitythepool.com

FER is going to have TREMENDOUS difficulty adjustment issues within the next couple days.  Blocks are being mined about 100x faster than they should be and your diff algo cannot keep up.  This is what happens with SHA coins in today's world of Terraminers, when your coin's source code is nothing more than a copy of Bitcoin with a few parameters changed.

Current diff is 4096, next will be 16384, next will be 65536 - diff can only go up by 4x per adjustment but it needs to go up by about 100x

Later on, this will lead to hours-long block times because the coin got so far ahead of schedule in the early hours/days of mining.  Diff will continue to go up even while hashrate goes down.

Bookmark this post, I *guarantee* you this will happen within the next 1-2 weeks, maybe sooner.
I agree with you, 400% diff re-target rate that was coded for BTC is not good choice for new SHA-256 coin nowadays, with modern ASICs hashrate. Thank you.

Since I believe my pool is the only one working, I would appreciate if you could list it in the OP:

Just checked all the pools, no mining going on there... So how do we make a node? What needs to happen to get things moving?
Any additional static node can be added and posted here. Anyone with static IP? Node added in the wallet is VPS based.
Pools will begin setting up their configuration based on source file that was posted today. Some firewalls like Zone Alarm block port, IP and windows firewall may be on at the same time with Zone Alarm.

not synching...strange
can you post config. file pls?

PS
Firewall  is  deactivated
Config file is located within compressed wallet file (ferengicoin.conf)

Source or not, THERE WILL BE NO POOLS until the JSON-RPC interface is fixed.  It returns HTTP 500 error on every command except getbalance
530  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][FER] FERENGICOIN on: March 20, 2014, 04:29:54 AM
Node is working, but may become blocked by firewall. Add firewall rule to allow ferengicoin wallet and ports 11003 and 21003.

I did get the wallet to sync, finally.  However it does appear that the JSON-RPC interface is not responding to commands.

*EDIT*

Definitely broken.  I had to rename ferrengicoin.conf to coin.conf to get it to read the config file and start listening for commands.  Also returns HTTP 500 error on every JSON RPC call.  There can be no pools until this is fixed.

Quark would be very disappointed in this.

I am investigating, but it appears the JSON-RPC interface of the wallet is broken.  No pools can operate without this.

Ordered 4 pieces Sunday on their website, received link in E-mail to the order.

Had to ask for new password though, as login details have not been provided. It worked yesterday OK, could log in, but the website insisted, that I don't have right to access that page of my order.

Today I don't even have my account, all gone, E-mail address is not recognized...

What happened?

Andy

I'm having the same problem.  Received email to create account, I did, but said I cannot access the page when I try to view my order history.

Now, when I try to login, it says account does not exist.

Received UPS tracking# two days ago but when I view status it just says the label has been printed.  Tried calling the phone# but it's just a recording that the voicemail is full.  I'd like to order about 8 more of these but so far I'm not impressed.  Order# 2032

pitythepool is down. Rigs looks like mining accepting shares, etc., but the web platform is down. Does someone have some information about that? Smiley

Yes, PityThePool is under intense DDOS attacks yet again, specifically targeting the AIRcoin pool.  They have been on and off for weeks now and are again reaching magnitudes large enough that there's really no protection against it.

Stratum is up so your miners should stay connected, but the web interface is going to be intermittent until things slow back down.  Payout crons will continue running normally.

Mortimer452 - Doh! I just fixed it though, by making the 7 look like a 5. I even made the 4 and the 2 look a bit thicker, so people can't tell what i did there to cover up the mistake. This is the kind of efficiency we are proud of at DoubleCoin.

Also, I'm not sure if you saw yet, but the DoubleCoin Vault has been compromised. You can see all the details below the header dedicated to  you.

Thank you - although I do not see anything different when I view the page

I appreciate the transparency you are giving all of us regarding the disturbance of funds in the DoubleCoin vault.  Despite even the best measures taken, every security system has its weaknesses.  Hopefully you can learn from this experience and develop an even more secure vault for the future.

mortimer452 - The website has been updated in your honor! Hope you enjoy it.

cryptohunter - Haha, yes, that is one way that would be fun to see it play out! For now, my wife lets out a depressed sigh when she hears I've been working on "DoubleCoin," like I've lost my marbles and am wasting my time, so personally, I'd love to just have enough money on the kitchen table that she realizes that sometimes there is a small hidden grain of intelligence behind my crazy ideas. Nevermind millions, it would be pretty satisfying to have $200 in change on the table! She never even thought people would buy 1, much less 20.

Personally, I was expecting the early coins like #2 to be coveted, and more valuable than the later coins, (although I knew the "top coin" would always get the most attention), but I guess the current presentation of the site makes them look like they'll be totally forgotten as the higher coins are purchased.

But, I can change that, and will do so... It is an unfolding adventure, and I'd like to keep it interesting for everyone involved!

Thank you - but looks like you wrote Mortimer 472 on the website Smiley

heh . . . 2^50 * 2 - 0.00000001 = 11,258,999.07 BTC

By the time the last one is purchased, mr. satoshinakamoto here will own about 90% of all bitcoins in existence.   Roll Eyes
538  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] DoubleCoin Launch - The Most Awkward Digital Currency... In the World on: March 17, 2014, 04:44:24 AM
It's worth a risk I guess at the 0.005ish BTC that I paid for #20.  Made me smile, it was worth the BTC

But I doubt we will see it go much further than this . . . couple more coins and we're getting into some real money.  By the time we're at coin 50, the entire stash will be worth (2 ^ 50) * 2 -0.00000001 BTC, which is like, a bajillion dollars.

So far, we are talking about a "cryptocurrency" with a ledger kept track of on a piece of paper, and the owner stacking up loose change.

No wallet, nor a promise of one Undecided
