1  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Coinbase seizing accounts on: September 19, 2017, 07:24:44 PM
I did a search and this apparently has not been posted, but Coinbase is a company to watch out for.   They can do whatever they want because of no regulation.

If you lose your phone, then you've lost your coins as I have.   They say my ID is not supported, but that's what i used to open the account with.

Now take a look at this:

http://www.bitraped.com/2017-06-13-bitcoin-wallet-coinbase-now-seizing-accounts-of-americans-total-ripoff-accounts-vanish.html

You may lose your phone but you don't lose your phone number, just request another SIM card and buy a new phone.

If you aren't comfortable with a service you shouldn't use it, there are plenty of exchanges out there, spread your money.

after many months of screwing around with Coinbase, i'm surprised they didn't tell me to do this.   it was my daughter that told me last weekend another simm card can be written up.  i've written about this before, and no one here told me this.

i don't know if a new simm card can be made here in a Colombian cell company, but we're going to try.

thanks for posting.

there has been other suggestions on this thread about spreading the coins around.   trouble is, no one wants to do business with a colombian ip.   i'm an expat American, and i can tell you a person would be correct in not wanting to do business here.

If you aren't the sole controller of your private keys, you don't have any bitcoins.

now before i go any further, i'd like to get this advice tattooed on the inside of my eyelid, so i see it while i'm sleeping.   this is the best advice on this blog:

If you aren't the sole controller of your private keys, you don't have any bitcoins.

First, this Coinbase bashing has been going on all year. Did you really search for other threads? Here's a thread that's nearly the same as yours from back in June: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1969783.0

Second, the article you're posting is entirely misleading. Coinbase didn't really seize accounts. They decided they could no longer support accounts owned by people living in two different states where state laws made it now longer feasible to do business (Hawaii and Wyoming).

For a month or more Coinbase notified account owners who are residents in these states that they need to move their funds and close their accounts. The consequence was that after a specific date their account would be closed for them. Any balance would be lost.

You can disagree with their business decision but they didn't seize accounts. They asked the account owners to move their funds and those account owners refused to do so. Who's really at fault here?

And here's the real news about the real story of Coinbase closing or suspending accounts from account owners in Hawaii and Wyoming.

Stop spreading the FUD, it's a terrible disease.

maybe so, but THEY SEIZED MY account.   they now say that my id that i used to open the account is no longer supported.

OP, your ignorance is astounding.  Coinbase is one of the most regulated exchanges in existence.  That's why they'll nuke your account if you use bitcoin to gamble, and all sorts of other reasons.  I can't stand them as an exchange, but they won't get away with scamming anybody like Mt.Gox or cryptsy did.  The US government would be all over their ass.

Exactly what part of the U.S. Govt is/will be all over Coinbase's ass for having lost my coins?  Yes, I'm ignorant for using CoinBase, I admit that.

You are absolutely correct.   I lost my phone and now I cannot access my account, and Coinbase could care less.  Looks like I'm going to lose my coins.   Leave this exchange before you lose your coins.

Simply download the coinbase app & authy app on your new phone with the same phone number.

Worked for me.

Room, I'm not sure I understand.   My new phone has a new number of course, but they would send the verification code to the old number that I can't access.

It seems like the best way to get your support ticket answered these days is to start a thread on Reddit (Bitcoinmarkets is probably best). I've seen many issues get solved quickly that way. It's pretty pathetic, but if it works, why not?

I'll try this Reddit solution, but is there any kind of regulatory agency that deals with problems like Coinbase?

I've always thought govt regulation was bad, and we don't need it, but the behavior of Coinbase shows us why we need govt regulation.

I see a lot of posters use Coinbase.   Just be real careful you never lose your phone if you have 2FA.   I lost my phone, my ID won't photograph over my monitor, and Coinbase sends you some stock answer about what to do.   It's as if a machine is answering on chat, because they don't answer my question.   I don't see anyway out of this, my coins are gone.

i was the biggest proponent of btc out there, mentioning and defending it on my own personal site.....but things have changed now.

all most of us have are the exchanges and right now i'm locked out of Coinbase with no responses to my emails while i watch this thing sink like the Titanic.

mtgox using some home made software, or what ever their problem is?   stronger exchanges need to be developed.   for those that got in early at $10 a coin, you're still doing great, but some of us are losing a bundle.    why would btc be worth more than an ounce of gold at this stage in December?

digitals will always be around, and 3rd world countries need this low cost payment method, but somebody like google or apple needs to come up with a coin and a much stronger system.   i'm going to wait for that.
So, when you were out being the biggest proponent of btc, did you fail to understand the idea of a decentralized currency? Did you fail to understand that it gave you the power to control your own storage of value, with no middle-man?

i have two other wallets but i wanted to spread things around with coinbase, because you never know.    i've explained on my site quite thoroughly since we're not in the USA about btc and security as well as cold storage.   only 2 people have bought on my site and they bought very little, others are just too skeptical.

my own personal problems are not part of the larger systemic problems within btc.   mtgox has hurt people more than i have, glad they wouldn't accept my wire last year.

newbie here................i notice the price of one coin on MtGox is $100 higher than on the gadget i use to track price.   why don't people buy on one exchange and sell on another, you know, a little arbitrage?
14  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why not more disucssion on Ripples on: January 08, 2014, 07:19:04 PM
thanks for the info.    i see that you can trade btc on ripple, that's why i thought it was ok.

but i what i really wanted to know is if ripple is a rip off.    there's a site that says that it is.

there's a few threads but not much.   is this for bitcoin only?
16  Other / Beginners & Help / One Question about Coinbase on: December 16, 2013, 07:43:41 PM
OK, so i took the plunge into btc's.   It was very difficult to deal with some of the companies for various reasons, plus I think there was a buying frenzy going on in November and their servers couldn't handle the flow.

So I finally was able to buy my coins on Coinbase, which was not hard at all.   My question is, do I leave the coins 'there' on Coinbase, or do I have to get a wallet for storage?   It looks safe to store them there on Coinbase, but I don't know.

Thanks in advance for any responses.
