Expect bigger correction next time they move another 1000-2000 btc again.

No.

Why: we use darkpools.
Also: we sold very little of what we moved out of exodus in order to not dip anything, as crashing btc is going against our own employees and ourselves, who hold BTC.
Also: this story is just as funny as it's ludicrous, even if we had sold everything we had moved out of exodus on the open market, it still wouldn't have dipped the market the way it went. Look at the volumes on bitstamp alone, 2k btc is a fraction of what they move a day.

TL;DR: Not us, and we're rather see BTC go up, not down.

Thanks for not spreading disinformation.

Also, in the youtube video you provided of Gavin's presentation, the question/answer part of the presentation which happened after his speech was cut out from this version. When I watched this some time ago, I found the Q and A part to be the most interesting and informative part of the speech. Do you have a link to the FULL version, unedited?

It's still very much up at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSMbBsdE45U

I'll trace back your questions. I find it very difficult to deal with this thread between the 'satanic vitalik' comments and the 'scam' libel. It's not exactly super motivating to wake up to this, which I guess, is the whole point of trolling.

To be fair you're much better off jumping our forums at this point, http://forum.ethereum.org.

I'm sorry, but i do not understand.

"PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE DOWNLOADED YOUR WALLET AND ENSURED THAT THE
.JSON WALLET FILE (ethereum-wallet-.json) IS ON YOUR COMPUTER BEFORE YOU SEND ANY BTC."

How  can ensure that i have downloaded my wallet and ensured that the .json wallet file is on my computer before i send any btc, if i get it in the email?  Huh Huh Huh

Nobody has the same problems  Shocked Huh

Hello Trunzo, sorry you are having problems. You can download your wallet on Step 5, ahead of purchasing with BTC.

Think of the wallets as gift cards. At first, you can get the giftcard but not 'load it'. Once the BTC is transferred the card is loaded.

The reason we had to make the wallet downloadable early on in the process is because the blockchain.info API could go down (it's outside our control). In which case the BTC would be transferred, the wallet loaded, but the last screen would not appear. Making the (empty) wallet downloadable early on, it helps prevent this (potential) issue.

How it all works is explained on: https://blog.ethereum.org/2014/07/09/how-to-make-a-purchase-in-the-ether-presale/

If you still need help, please email helpdesk@ethereum.org, which is manned 24/7.

Devs cancelled the first IPO in order to work on details and come up with a decent IPO plan. Instead they've just started IPO with no info whatsoever. Maidsafe investors got about 20000 coins for 1 BTC, devs set a cap but still investors are pretty much fucked. Ethereum devs only offer 2000 for 1 BTC, didn't set a cap, didn't post any info about total amount of coins, mining plan, devs stake ect. Looks like another big disappointment: eMunie, Maidsafe, Ethereum.

You'll be then pleased to hear there is no IPO. To quote Joseph:

"Our sale is structured differently from sales or fundraising events conducted by other groups in the space. We are not conducting an IPO. We are not selling shares in anything. Ether (ETH), the product we are selling, has no voting or any other kind of rights and does not entitle anyone to dividends or any sort of future gains.

Ether is a necessary element -- a fuel -- for operating the computational "appliance" we are building. Without the requirement of payment of ether for every computational step and storage operation of the system, infinite loops or excessive storage demands could bog down the system and effectively destroy it.

People can download the software appliance and run it on their computers and it will do certain basic things like perhaps showing them a catalog of available apps. If they want more functionality, like running a DApp or uploading and testing DApps that they have written, they will have to feed fuel into the machine.

Under Swiss law, where Ethereum Switzerland GmbH is based, the product we are selling is classified as a software product. And we are conducting a pre-sale for this product since we are not yet able to manufacture it.

People who are interested in acquiring it to build and upload DApps or to pay for their usage of DApps are enabled in the pre-sale to buy ETH for BTC and lock in their supply of it at a known price. These sales will help us to fund the continued construction of the software platform (the computational appliance) that requires ETH and that will continually create ETH starting at the moment the genesis block is released. Once the initial batch of ETH is created in the genesis block and ready for delivery, people who have purchased some in the pre-sale will be able to claim their product.
"

As for information, there are 5 pdf documents that in excruciating details explain everything about what we are doing, what we've done, and what we are planning to do.

No cap on sales, I take it? Approx. 14 days at current price, regardless of how many sell between now and that 14 days, correct?

Correct

ETH will run as POW after IPO?

As per our DEV plan (located on our site, as a pdf):

Consensus - As discussed above, consensus algorithms are far from perfect. The plan to solve the problem with blockchain-based proof-of-work (PoW) and random computation trees appears promising, but ultimately version 1.0 of a protocol of this form may well fail to bear the brunt of attacks in the long term. An ideal algorithm, one that is both socially cost-free or cost-negative and promotes a high level of decentralization and security, will likely require a combination of novel approaches such as transactions-as-PoS (proof-of-stake), delegated-PoS, useful PoW, next-generation centralization/ASIC-resistant PoW and maybe even more exotic strategies involving bandwidth and storage. Developing such an algorithm, and making sure that it actually works, is an important priority for securing the blockchains of tomorrow.

I understand Ether is not a coin, it's a basically a token to use on the Ethereum blockchain in order to initiate any implementation.
Is that basically correct?

What methods will be available for determining Ether value (in BTC or fiat) after the Ether pre-sale is finished, and what avenues will be available to sell Ether for BTC or fiat after the pre-sale is finished. Will Ether be traded on exchanges?

As far as I understand it, there is nothing that prevents exchanges from adding Ether to their sites. This is a questions for the exchanges Smiley

Can I buy ether multiple times from the same email address?

Or do I need to make one bulk purchase?

Thanks,

Apologies for the delay in replying. Only one of me, many questions. Looking forward to the AMA tonight Smiley

You can purchase ether multiple times, with the same email. Just use a different password to be safe. Don't lose your wallet or password! Keep them very safe. Cheers!

Hello everyone,

The ether sale has begun! It takes place exclusively on our website at https://www.ethereum.org/
Any other location claiming to be selling ether is very likely a scam.

To simply the dissemination of information, all documentation including development plan, updated whitepaper and intended use of revenue can be found on our website at https://www.ethereum.org/

A summary by Vitalik can be found at:
https://blog.ethereum.org/2014/07/22/launching-the-ether-sale/

All updates will be done via our blog on https://blog.ethereum.org and this FAQ

We understand many of you have questions. We'll be hosting a reddit AMA tomorrow. I'll do my best to answer what i can here, but bear with me as there's only one of me and plenty of questions I'm sure Smiley

All other offers to purchase Ether should be considered a scam and reported to administrators

will etherum be able to do anything that NXT can't do?

I can't speak for NXT (or XCP, MSC etc), and we have good relationships with everyone in the field. Personally I see our future interactions as collaboration, not competition.

I think the vision we have for ethereum is unique, even 6 months after our original announcement. The core idea is to promote the development of dapps by making it very easy for people to leverage skills they already have: JS, HTML or QML for the frontend for example. The contract part also has a low barrier of entry, by using a VM and enabling several higher level languages (Currently GO-like, python-like and lisp-like).

As I was saying in previous post, I remember, being a developer myself, being quite frustrated it wasn't easier to build the cool dapps that have been envisaged in the last 18 months. I think making the build process near-trivial will accelerate innovation in the space quite dramatically.

when will be held the IPO?

To paraphrase Joe Lubin's on our forums (https://forum.ethereum.org)

We are not conducting an IPO. We are not selling shares in anything. Ether (ETH), the product we are selling, has no voting or any other kind of rights and does not entitle anyone to dividends or any sort of future gains.

Ether is a necessary element -- a fuel -- for operating the computational platform we are building. Without the requirement of payment of ether for every computational step and storage operation of the system, we'd hit the halting problem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halting_problem): infinite loops or excessive storage demands could bog down the system and effectively destroy it.

People can download the software platform and run it on their computers and it will do certain basic things like perhaps showing them a catalog of available apps.

People who are interested in acquiring ether to build and distribute DApps, or to pay for their usage can do so in the pre-sale, for BTC. These sales will help us fund the continued construction of the software platform that requires ETH, tentatively due for release in Q4.

From that I can say the 5 minute one is the best one for time balance but that's a survey of 1 someone might know a shorter more to the point video Smiley

You forgot that 10 minute one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Clw-qf1sUZg Smiley

We have plans for a 3 minutes one, technically minded, which will be animated. No ETA yet though.

What do you think of Ashton Kutcher (Hunk) being interested in your project. I believe he has millions of followers on Twitter . could be interesting al though Nem and Nxtl  interest me most at this point in time.

Ah, good question! Ashton showing an interest in ethereum was really a 'wow' moment, because I'm not sure if you looked into his career, but he has rarely been wrong in the past in his bets on technology. And come on, he played Jobs in 'Jobs', how neat is that! Cheesy. I'd love working with him in the future if he has cools ideas for Dapps.

PS: Plus, after his tweet, my wife finally got to think all this geeky crypto stuff could maybe be 'cool', after all. So thank you Ashton Smiley

When is the pre-sale going to happen?

What's the purpose of running the client right now?

Hello bitcoincal,

The presale is going to come soon(tm).

The purpose of running the client at the moment is to try your hand at developing dapps in HTML, QML and javascript, or help with its development at http://github.com/ethereum.

Cheers!
20  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Ethereum: Welcome to the Beginning on: July 12, 2014, 08:17:31 PM
i believe the success of dogecoin was in part due to the inclusiveness of the community surrounding the coin. it's not intimidating. not full of savvy people who attitude is along the lines of - i learned cyrpto on my own, why can't you do the same?... or the answer is out there, you're just not looking hard enough. looking at the ethereum forum you can tell that the community is not inclusive to the general public, at least not right now it isn't. and i understand.

the willingness of the community to answer "stupid questions" and to help guide / make clear to those who are a little lost is one indication of the attitude of ethereum and the attitude of the early adopters/inverters. how this will effect this crypto is anyone's guess.

to answer my own question... as far as i have seen, the mining algo works on the test client... i've mined some ether.  but like vitalik have mentioned, ether, in theory, can be mined with cpu, gpu, memory and bandwidth. i would like to have something more concrete, more finalized in therms of the mining algo since we are no more than 6months away from launch. pref to have something before the sale. unless i am wrong, and the algo is already something finalized, please enlighten me. thank you.

Thanks for the feedback MasterOfCoin!

In terms of user friendliness, well, I can only use my own story: I was blown away by Mike Hearn's presentation at the turing festival https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu4PAMFPo5Y back mid last year, and immediately wanted to build these autonomous, self-owned agents he was talking about. I tried my hand at hacking the core client but quickly found it way too complex for my liking, and while there are some good APIs and alternatives (https://libbitcoin.org/libbitcoin-manifesto.pdf), it was still too much for me to get into with a full time day job that required very long extra hours to boot.

While the underlying technologies that power ethereum can be also very advanced, our main goal has always been to make the power of ethereum trivial to leverage by developers. HTML skills, some javascript is all that's needed to build most of a decentralized application: the underlying 'crypto' layer is neatly abstracted behind user-friendly APIs. As for end users, well, if they are comfortable with using a web browser, they certainly will be comfortable using the EtherBrowser.

Of course, at the moment, halfway in the development process, things are far from user friendly. The four reference clients have rather obtuse interfaces (we haven't started on the GUI/browser work yet), the documentation is sparse, out of date, or non-existent, and you are confronted with messages about 'canonical blocks' when booting up the CLI for the first time. Not exactly friendly, in fact, more like the opposite of it!!!

There's a saying, "Those on the 'bleeding edge' bleed a lot". That's true. I get a kick out of using alpha software that could crash at anytime, and has no documentation. But it's certainly not for everyone, and certainly not our end goal. It's however the consequence of having a totally transparent and open source development process: anyone can try the develop branch of the github. (and developers, please do! the repos need all the pull requests they can get).

So anyway, answering your question: the mining algo is not finalized yet, however we have a vision to make it CPU-friendly, and ASIC resistant, if not completely ASIC-proof (that would be nice). We intend to develop this algorithm, and perhaps with the addition of hybrid proof of stake, as the consensus algorithm for Ethereum 1.0.

Cheers!
