262  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Houston, we have a Major Problem! on: July 24, 2011, 12:56:27 PM
If lending fiat dollars with interest is causing the world economic collapse, will lending bitcoins at interest cause an internet collapse?

If we lend bitcoins with interest, what happens when there are not enough bitcoins to pay off all the interest on the borrowed bitcoins?

Lending with interest does not imply that more money has to be created for the loan+interest to be paid back. Money circulates. The money that is used to pay the interest finds its way back into the economy and may very well be used again later to pay back the loan.

265  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Intriguing question about old addresses? on: July 20, 2011, 07:03:49 AM
This is why BTC can never really succeed, because everyone has to be a tech geek just to know how to avoid this sort of thing

This is always the case with new technology. At first you have to be a geek to use it, then as popularity grows it becomes more user friendly. If this means that Bitcoin can never succeed then computers would not have succeeded. Or the Internet.

Read about it in swedish magazine Fokus (article in swedish here).
267  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Witch Bitcoin Symbol? EVERYONE VOTE AND USE!!! on: July 15, 2011, 08:35:57 AM
This discussion is about a single-digit symbol, which is kind of complementary for most (all?) currencies.

Certainly not for all. A lot of currencies have "symbols" that are multiple characters. http://www.xe.com/symbols.php. It is also worth noting that for example in Sweden "kr" is listed as the "symbol" for swedish krona when it is really just an abbreviation of "krona", not a "symbol". When I log in to my bank online, amounts are simply listed without a symbol (e.g. 14515.45).

So that's another option, don't bother with a symbol at all. Use the currency code (BTC) when it is necessary to avoid confusion. In Switzerland, CHF is used as both the symbol and the currency code by the way.

Let me know what you think.

Looks pretty.
269  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A BitCoin StackExchange - please follow it! on: July 10, 2011, 09:40:08 AM
I committed a while ago on participating on that Q&A website whenever it launches.

However, I think it would be better to give OSQA a try. It works nearly exactly like StackExchange, except it's decentralized and the engine is open source.

OSQA looks nice, almost too much like StackExchange, feels a bit like a ripoff. What did you mean by decentralized by the way? It's a regular web app that someone will have to host, right?
270  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Currency Symbol ฿ on: July 10, 2011, 06:56:44 AM
So here's my suggestion to make everyone happy. Smiley Use ฿ for Bitcoins since this is already rather established. Use ß for milliBitcoins. If Bitcoin becomes a success, milliBitcoins will be more widely used than Bitcoins anyway so that should make those rooting for ß happy.

It's an arbitrary stunt by people who want to make even small amounts valuable.

People don't bid on auctions for 40 millieuros or 20 cents. They bid €0.40 or $0.20 which is the official denomination.

BTC is easy to understand and can be typed with any sort of keyboard. All the significant sites that sell merchandise or services for bitcoins list their prices in the format 0.07BTC, 0.52BTC etc..

I have never seen anyone sell items for microbitcoins or millibitcoins. I have seen tons of people selling items for 0.10BTC.

You do realize that if Bitcoin becomes widely used the value of each Bitcoin will increase. This is a fact, not a guess. It will then be necessary to be able to pay e.g. 0.0012 bitcoins, and that's not a great way to write it since it is very hard to read. That is what the whole discussion about shifting the decimal point or using milliBitcoins is about.
271  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Currency Symbol ฿ on: July 09, 2011, 10:14:24 PM
If we're not gonna move the decimal point we also need to think of a symbol for "milliBitcoins" and it's needed pretty much right away. People talk about mBTC and μBTC in other threads but it doesn't make any sense to put a prefix on the three letter currency code. What we need is another symbol, just like there is ¢ and $.

Just make it "feel" like the old system. Instead of labeling it as "confirmed/unconfirmed," pretend that the money is "transferring." Except whereas banks take 3 days to transfer, for this have it pretend that it's taking a few minutes to an hour to transfer. So, yeah, either a progress bar, or just text reading "transfer in progress" will be enough. We know that's not what's really happening, but people prefer what they already understand.
My business marketing class had an excellent example. The BlackBerry was the first mobile device that did e-mail over the cell network. However, when it came out, most people had no idea what e-mail was. So, instead of marketing itself as a cool, techie, futuristic device, BlackBerry was marketed as a pager that lets you send text. That's what it sort of is, even though we really know it's not. That's also why BlackBerry was understood, adopted, and succeeded. Contrary to that example is the Tivo, which SHOULD'VE been marketed as a digital VCR, and likely should've had features similar to one, at least at first, but it was instead marketed as a futuristic techie device that did all sorts of things people didn't understand ("Time-Shifting?" wtf is that???). In te end, Tivo, despite being a HEAVILLY marketed and recognized name, ended up bombing. So, for any feature you think may be confusing, just lie and make it "feel" like it's something else that we've always used.
p.s. that class cost me $3,200, being in one of the top universities, but I'll gladly share this nugget of knowledge for free Cheesy
Also, if this comes out, and works well, I'll gladly donate a bitcoin or few.

Thanks for the input, very good points.
273  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: User friendly client initiative on: June 27, 2011, 05:13:08 PM
The only other thing from a functionality standpoint, from a complete beginner's viewpoint, is how to "buy" bitcoins.

Yes, I agree, this is really important. I have thought about contacting the some of the exchanges once the client is up and running, for some sort of cooperation. Would be nice if the user could simply transfer money to a bank account and then have it appear as bitcoins in the client (without having to open an account, put in a buy order etc.).

Regarding the bones, have you heard of the Bitcoinsharp project http://code.google.com/p/bitcoinsharp/?  It is a direct port of BitcoinJ but is still in early alpha.

Yes, I did see this and I will probably use it.

If you would like some more spare hours in terms of development, testing, user documentation to help speed along the development, I would like to volunteer.

Thanks a lot! I will hopefully get something up and running in July/August when I have some more time to put in. Once I have a first version I'm sure that there are lots of things that you can help out with.
274  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Poll: What is your favourite bitcoin browser extension? on: June 26, 2011, 04:36:36 PM
OP himself seems to have used the leaked list of e-mail addresses from Mt.Gox to send out spam about his "Bitcoin Tool" so I know for sure that I wouldn't install that one. Would be nice if we could put "Spammer" or similar next to his name.
275  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Shift the decimal point over? on: June 26, 2011, 08:47:07 AM
My vote is to NOT change BTC, but get used to talking in micro-BTC (UBT,UBC,uDTC,whatever the concensus), but that's not clearly available in the vote!

"micro" sounds too tiny when spoken aloud. I suggest a new name altogether. And it needs to be 2 syllables.

UBC is ok. But when spoken aloud, it should sound like "you-coins" (not "micro-bit-coins").

mBC is ok. But when spoken aloud, it should sound like "em-coins" (not "micro-bit-coins").

I wonder if mBC might be confused with "million". The m comes from micro, but obviously the real abbreviation for micro looks more like u.

So, let's go with UBC, pronounced "you-coins".

I'll send an "you-cent" to anyone who agrees with me Wink

I believe that we're mixing concepts here. "BTC" is the equivalent of "USD" or "EUR", an abbreviation of the currency. But there is no such thing as "cUSD" or "CUD" when talking about cents. What we do have is a dollar sign ($) and a cent sign (¢).

If we're not going to move the decimal point (which I still hope that we are), we should come up with a symbol for "millies" or whatever people want call them. In that case, my suggestion is that we use ß for this, since it is logical looking at the greek alphabet. B (similar enough to ฿) is uppercase Beta and ß is lowercase Beta. This could possibly also satisfy the ones who suggested ß as the main bitcoin symbol, as ß will probably be more widely used than ฿ if the value of Bitcoins continue to increase.
276  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Vote for a new Bitcoin site on StackExchange on: June 25, 2011, 01:29:47 PM
I have commited to this. Hopefully it helps. How many does it take to get to 100%, do you know?

It takes 200 users, but 100 of them needs to have 200+ rep on at least one other stackexchange site. There is also a "commitment score" based on users' activity on other sites that has to be fulfilled. See "more info" on right hand side of the proposal page.
277  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Who updates www.bitcoin.org? on: June 23, 2011, 03:50:58 PM
Hi,

I posted this in "project development" but did not get a single answer, so I'll try here instead (someone should know).

There has been some discussions on the forum about changing things on the web page, for example changing "virtual currency" to "digital currency". Who is in charge of updating it? How do we get it done?

279  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If i send my bitcoins to a wrong address, what happens? on: June 22, 2011, 04:32:55 PM
Hi!
As the title says, what happens if i get an address wrong? Do the coins get lost?
If that's what happens, why not change the code in Bitcoin, so that if the bitcoin network cant detect that address, returns the bitcoins to you?

From the wiki:

"Bitcoin addresses contain a built-in check code, so it's generally not possible to send Bitcoins to a mistyped address. However, if the address is well-formed but no one owns it (or the owner lost their wallet.dat), any coins sent to that address will be lost forever."
280  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Tool - a browser extension for Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer on: June 22, 2011, 04:06:33 PM
Bitcoin Tool is a browser extension for Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer...

This guy is sending out spam about his Bitcoin Tool, most likely using the leaked list of e-mail addresses from Mt.Gox. Would be nice if we could label his user account "Spammer" or something similar.
