601  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Robosats self hosting question on: February 24, 2023, 10:02:57 PM
Just in case anyone wants to try this for themselves; the error code I was getting isn't an issue.  I posed this question on RoboSat's matrix chatroom, and Reckless_Satoshi responded.  He said the error is regarding the fact that I didn't download the webpack, which would be needed if I intended to do any development on the software.  Since that's not my intention, I don't need the webpack and I can disable the npm-dev docker image, or remove it from the docker-compose.yml file before start-up.

Anyway, I've had the self-hosted site up for several days now without issue, so I've gained confidence in it's stability and usability.
602  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Bisq - Exchange, Decentralized. on: February 23, 2023, 02:07:53 AM
Same here, I didn't find anything relevent about the minimum system requirements, not even a discussion, so I concluded there is no difference in this matter.

And yeah, I'm the guy who has always a problem with Bisq lol. I have 4 gb ram but in reality I have 6 gb. I think there is 2 gb used as like a swap file for Linux.
Intel I5 5200U CPU@2.20 Ghz It should be enough as a system basically because Bisq is not a software doing millions of computations per second, or a super super heavy video game.

I know using a server for this purpose is not a good security practice and I have listed the risks. Considering that I don't store funds, unless a person in control of the server clicks to confirm a transaction, releases the collateral and transfers it to his wallet.

So I'm only risking the collateral. Knowing that I don't do big transactions... I try to weigh the pros and cons but I don't see something else 'dangerous'...

Is your machine a desktop?  If so, I have a pair of 4GB RAM sticks (8GB total,) that should work with your chipset.  They are Micron MT8KTF51264AZ-1G6E1, if you care to confirm.  I don't need any money for them.  If you wish to remain discreet, I'll send them to MJ and you'll have to pay shipping to your location.

edit:

off-topic, but how that comes above CPU @ 2.20 is linking to mailto:CPU@2.20
 Huh

Not sure what this is about, something you're seeing in the bios, or a CLI report?  I don't see anything like that from my lshw or lscpu reports.

Are you trying to run Bisq on a headless server? What for? Can you interact with it on the command-line? I was actually wondering about that the other day...

I think he's talking about renting remote hardware or a cloud server to install an OS with a GUI dedicated to running Bisq.  Again, it's not something I would recommend from a security and privacy perspective, and I doubt it would be cost effective over time.

Bisq uses between 1.5 and 2GB of memory on my machine, so 4-6GB should suffice. Operating systems also have swap in case you fill your actual RAM completely. So that's not really a reason for software not to start at all, but heavy swap usage would be slower and degrade your SSD over time.

Yeah, swap space sholdn't be counted as part of your RAM capacity, it's for "emergency" use only as far as prioritizing processes.  And SATA is no where near as fast as DDR3 RAM, so there's that.
603  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Foundation Devices 'Passport Batch 2' hardware wallet review on: February 23, 2023, 12:29:19 AM
You are not ''loading'' anything on your phone, it's just interface and your keys/coins are still on hardware wallet.
Some cards work with laptop, so you can carry that with yourself, you can even carry your whole mobile office if you want along with ugly fake calculator.

You don't have to believe me, but I do know how hardware wallets work.

It's fake calculator that can't work without cable or some weird battery gadget, so only an idiot would think this is real calculator, but I could argue that you would be very much suspicious and draw attention because people don't use calculators anymore.

I'm a middle-aged mechanical engineer.  I don't go anywhere without my HP48.

I never said NFC chips will last decades, but they probably will last long time.
I was speaking about material cards are made off, same as credit cards... it's common fact they can last decades, and some of them are waterproof or made of metal.
Nothing can break and there are no mechanical parts, no screen and no buttons, so they are very durable.

Oh, I see what you were saying now; the functional part may fail, but the rest of it will last decades.
604  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Legitimacy of account on: February 22, 2023, 10:12:34 PM
Then when they told me about sending money further made me more cautious.

Obvious scam.  If it's your money, why would you need send money to recover it?

Not to mention, people don't just "come into some bitcoin."  You either earned it, mined it, or purchased it.  If you've never done any of those things you can safely assume that you have no bitcoin whatsoever.  This is just a phishing expedition, hoping to snag a whale.
605  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Foundation Devices 'Passport Batch 2' hardware wallet review on: February 22, 2023, 09:50:27 PM

Lol, lucky for me I trust my kids.  They are all responsible adults, so the conversation about the Passport actually went like this:

Daughter: What's that?
Papa: The best hardware wallet I've ever used.
Daughter: Oh yeah, I can see that.  It looks cool.  It resembles an old phone, is it supposed to?

As for the security guard at the airport, he will never see the Passport.  I travel with the ColdCard which seems to attract no attention in my experience.

If you want incognito hardware wallet, than I guess best option for you is credit card format hardware wallets (Tangem, Satochip, etc.) that don't have any screen, and they communicate with application on smartphone.
You can carry this card format wallets in your wallet, most of them are waterproof, and can last for decades... all other hardware wallets are not incognito at all, and I saw most of them.

I don't know about all that.  First off, I refuse to load my hardware wallets into my phone.  I have a few hundred bucks in my hot wallet, and that's usually all I need.

Second, if I travel for more than just a weekend (and potentially need more funds,) I'll need to have a computer with me for other reasons, and I prefer to have the ColdCard with me.  And realistically a "cheap calculator" is less likely to get stolen than a credit card.

Third, I don't know how you can say that NFC chips will last for decades.  They haven't even been around for decades, and mine start failing after keeping them in my wallet for a couple of years.
606  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Bisq - Exchange, Decentralized. on: February 22, 2023, 03:17:26 PM
Hi guys,

I'm looking for a recommandation.

I'm ready to give up to use Bisq. Each time it's a nightmare and I'm lucky when I finish a TX.
However, I'm ready to give a last chance and to try to use it with a virtual server. What specs should I buy to be 'safe' (RAM and CPU).
It will be based on KVM, so the ressources will be 'dedicated'

I looked through Bisq's documentation, but I couldn't find any mention of the minimum system requirements or any recommendations.  I went back and looked at your previous post about your hardware issues, and I see that you only have 4GB of ram on your current rig.  That seems rather light, but it should be enough for a light weight OS such as Debian.  If you're running Windows I would recommend at least 8GB.  I don't think that Bisq software requires much in the way of processing power, so a dual-core processor should be enough, but again, that would somewhat depend on the OS you are using.  If you're a Windows user I would recommend a minimum 4-Core processor.

I've been hearing good things about the ZimaBoard 832, which is a single board computer with a quad-core Celeron processor and 8GB of RAM.  They sell for about $180 on Amazon, and are capable of running Windows.  In the long-run something like that might be cheaper than running Bisq on VPS, and certainly more secure.  Personally, I wouldn't want to run wallet software (even if it is just a hot wallet,) on a cloud-based system.

I have a couple of old lap-tops in storage, but I don't remember what their specs are.  I'll pull them out and inspect them this weekend, and if they're capable I'll let you know.  I'd be willing to part with one (or both) for very little money, if you're interested.
607  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Foundation Devices 'Passport Batch 2' hardware wallet review on: February 22, 2023, 02:19:13 AM
I must say from my own usage that it is extremely comfortable to use with this shape. I've had wired hardware wallets with cables sticking out the side and bottom; neither was perfect, especially with short cables. If a device is too narrow or thin, it becomes awkward to hold. Some devices need to be held by the side, but have the buttons.. on the side. Others are too tiny to hold on to while pressing buttons, so you need to lay them on the table.
This device, you can use it one-handed, long passphrases, no issue whatsoever. It may even look less conspicuous, to be honest. I do agree that it would look less flashy in an all-black variant, for instance.

While they were obviously inspired by mobile phones when designing this, we should consider that mobile phones reached that shape over years of trial and error.

Yeah, the Passport is very comfortable to use, and ergonomically superior to other brands.  It's worth noting the weight of the wallet as well; it comes off heavy at first, but it's heft feels good when using it with one hand.  Just something for the weight-conscious professional cyclists to consider.  Tongue

As for other devices, the Nano S and the ColdCard are probably the best designs from an "incognito" perspective.
I agree with the Ledger, but ColdCard looks pretty odd, even more than an old candybar phone, no? Especially when connecting a 9V battery with a dangling cable to power it on.

To me the ColdCards (Mk series) look like a small, cheap calculator that old people got for free when they started a bank account.  Notably, my kids have walked in on me with the ColdCard on my desk an never even noticed it.  They expect me to be an old fogy, but I guess a candy-bar phone is where they draw the line.
608  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Bisq - Exchange, Decentralized. on: February 22, 2023, 01:30:00 AM
It's interesting idea, but I would rather like to see some light version of Bisq exchange that could run on mobile devices.
Maybe you won't be able to use all features from desktop version, but you could make trades and do basic functions.

I agree with n0nce on this one; as it is a program like bisq would have a hard time running on a mobile device.  The only way would it could work if bisq could run as a background service as he and I discussed in our recent posts, or trust some third party to host your seed which would be a non-starter for me.

I am waiting to see what is going to happen when Bisq 2.0 comes out, and I heard some rumors release is not far away, and this will be a major change.
I would wait for this new release to come out before making any new suggestions to Bisq devs.

I wouldn't expect much in the way of development of Bisq v1 either.  If a CLI API with a frontend is to be developed I doubt we'll see it before v2 is released.

Which brings up a good point; I know there are a few good developers here, and the Bisq team could use help with developing the user interface for v2.  It's easy to request compensation for your contribution, so anyone who thinks they can help I encourage you to mosey on over to their matrix room to learn more:  https://matrix.to/#/#bisq.v2.dev:bitcoin.kyoto

why did they get this loan with no collateral  but i don't ?
610  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Foundation Devices 'Passport Batch 2' hardware wallet review on: February 21, 2023, 10:36:54 PM
To be honest, I don't like that the hardware wallet is shaped like a mobile phone. That makes it more susceptible to theft, since there are a lot of cellphone thieves lurking about in many parts of the world. It doesn't help that it also looks flashy - the bronze look just serves to attract more eyeballs to it.

What's wrong with making it a paper shape or a bracket or even like the Trezor & Ledger - plain designs that do not bring any attention.

I like the look and the feel of the Passport, but I agree it is a bit flashy.  I wasn't sure what to expect but I got an idea the other day; my daughter walked into my home office the other day and she noticed the passport right away.  I think she was kind of shocked that I had a candy-bar phone in 2023, and right away asked "What is that".

The idea that it looks like an old-school phone might make some ignore it, but then again it's rather odd in this day and age for someone to have a phone of that shape and size.  That alone might make some people more curious.  The device itself doesn't have any indication that it's a bitcoin wallet, and it would take some one who knew that "Foundation" is a wallet manufacturer to recognize it for what it is.

As for other devices, the Nano S and the ColdCard are probably the best designs from an "incognito" perspective.  I will say that the Passport is by far the best hardware wallet I've ever used.  The quality is second to none, and it's very easy to use for an air-gapped wallet.  My ColdCard Mk4 can also be used air-gapped, but it's more cumbersome to use, especially if you have long, complex passphrase wallets you like to access regularly.

612  Economy / Lending / Re: want a loan of $1000 on: February 21, 2023, 08:12:32 PM
Let's paint a realistic scenario of someone who needs a short term loan, like the one you requested a year ago:

1. Alice askes for a $500 loan
2. Alice promises to pay back in 30 days when she gets her paycheck
3. Alice is rejected and does not get a loan
4. 30 days later, Alice gets her paycheck and no longer needs a loan.

So after all that, Alice has to wait until she gets paid through her regular income streams to get the money she needs, and finally got it.  What does Alice do now?  Does she keep pestering the potential lenders who initially rejected her request?  What's the point of that after she already got the money she needed?  Maybe the point isn't the loan, but the idea of the loan.  Maybe she's trying to gain the trust of the lenders so she can take bigger and bigger loans.  Or maybe she's just trying to scam one of the lenders because she feels like she's entitled since she was scammed herself.

Regardless, you are not getting a loan here and if you're too stupid to figure that out after a year it only justifies the lenders' decision to reject your request.

As for whether you are scammer or not, it doesn't matter.  You are a newbie who has not contributed anything to this community.  You have done nothing to earn respect, admiration, or trust from any member of this community.  Quite the opposite in fact; those who reject you are trolled incessantly because you have nothing else to offer.

So, for all practical purposes I would warn every lender to treat you as if you are scammer who is waiting for an opportunity to scam.  Not because I have proof, but because that's the safest path forward, and because you sure as hell look and act like a scammer.

No proof of you being a scammer is needed, and no one here is obligated to give you a loan even if you aren't a scammer.  Is that clear enough, or are you too stupid to understand that?

Tsk, I even merited the guy on one of his posts  Sad https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;u=3534205 when there are other who deserves it, I should have checked the post history of this idiot.

I saw that and for a split second I thought it was strange, but after looking a bit closer I think that was actually a good post that deserved merit.  I even thought about meriting the post my self, but it would be a waste to squander a merit on a banned account.
614  Economy / Reputation / Re: This is multiple account with reference on: February 21, 2023, 05:54:30 PM
I don't know why, but one-post newbies submitting alt account reports make me really suspicious.  What are the odds this is an actual newbie?  What are the chances that he'll be ranking up and added to DT2 in the next few months?  Roll Eyes

Anyway, OP, you're about 36 account shy of the scope of this alt farm: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5394559.msg60566046#msg60566046

Had you followed the reference in either of the red-tagged accounts (which you mentioned,) you would have seen that.
615  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: February 21, 2023, 02:45:41 PM
Even in relation to withdrawing money from exchanges, people really only started to listen after FTX went down,

It goes in cycles.  People payed attention after the Bitconnect fiasco, and then again after many got Goxxed.  Now we have FTX to remind people to remain diligent.

and I know that because news articles started popping up with titles such as "Bitcoin maximalists organizing bank runs on exchanges", and presumably such titles are read by thousands of people. It probably made a few dents in the population using exchanges as a wallet, but that's about it.

I have a much more cynical outlook on headlines like that.  The media is nothing but another corporate entity looking for ways to part people from their money.  They will always side with other corporate pirates, in this case to paint "bitcoin maximalists" as the bad guys.  Couple that with the impeccable timing of claims that a "bitcoin developer" (Luke Dashjr,) got hacked and then blamed self-custody as the root cause for his loss.  Very few in the media understand, let alone care about bitcoin and it's ability to keep our wealth secure.  That's the last thing they want, anyway.

Taint is different thing to fight in that most people aren't even talking about it, which means they have no way to know that it's a problem.

Taint is just the next battle for the minds of bitcoiners.  It'll take some time and lots of information to get people to see how preposterous it is to paint some bitcoin as tainted.  As jackg pointed out, 4 transaction fees is all it takes to take your "100% risky" bitcoin down to only 6% risky.  So, for less than $0.25 our tainted bitcoin is clean again?  It just goes to show that Chain Analysis is a scam, profiteering on people's fear, which they continue to propegate with the help of the media.
616  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Bisq - Exchange, Decentralized. on: February 21, 2023, 03:13:06 AM
I've heard that this functionality is in the works. It will be pretty awesome to have Bisq running on a home server with the ability to access all it's features from a mobile app or a webpage.
Really? Where did you hear that, if I may ask?

Some reddit post from an unknown individual, lol.  Sorry, I didn't mean to get your hopes up or make it sound like I heard it from a reliable source.

The CLI options certainly make it possible for some crafty individual to develop a frontend.  The software is Java based, but I don't think the API cares what language is used for the frontend.

That would be awesome, indeed. I envision something like Ride-The-Lightning, which is accessible from any of your devices that runs Tor Browser. A phone app could connect to it, too, similarly to how SPV wallets (desktop or mobile) can connect to your full node's Electrum Server through Tor.

Lol, RTL (and Electrs) is what I was updating yesterday.  I'm sensing some cosmic-wavelength-connection here...  either that or you installed a key logger on my 'puter.   Shocked  Wink

you won't believe it, I used ChipMixer)

You're right, I don't believe it because chipmixer is not an exchange.  Let me rephrase my question; where did you get that screenshot?
Might be a block explorer? They sometimes have basic 'blockchain analysis' built-in that shows who is the owner of some address and similar. Since it talks about risk, it does seem like some sort of site where the user deposited money. Could be an exchange, could just as well be a poker or gambling site.

@skyreny, please have a look at: Bisq

It looks like an exchange or some sort of custodial wallet, the word "deposit" in the image is a dead giveaway:

Don't want to be advertising poor services but doing a test with a few of those seems to suggest your "risk" halves per hop you make out of chipmixer, what a tremendous subscription for an exchange to buy Grin (my point isn't their system is inherently stupid, it's that ANY system trying to exclusively block mixers is - they'll never be able to find perfect).

Lol, now that's funny.  It seems like all these presumably smart people who run exchanges and services with custodial wallets would see the folly in wasting their hard earned money on the "Chain Analysis" scam.  It is just that; a scam.

I was doing some server updates yesterday, and went looking for exactly what you're describing, but was disappointed to find that it still didn't exist.  This wasn't the first time I went looking for such a thing, so I wasn't expecting much.  It appears that the CLI options to which you linked were only recreantly added (v1.9,) and I've heard that this functionality is in the works.  It will be pretty awesome to have Bisq running on a home server with the ability to access all it's features from a mobile app or a webpage.

I started thinking about it again recently while learning how to run Robosats locally.  But Robosats still has many of it's functions running on remote servers, obviously.

Yeah this is why I don't leave too much money / bitcoin in my casino accounts, you just never know.  Duelbits the company we have a campaign for (wheelz, talking to you on this one) seem to be very legit, run ads at pro soccer stadiums over in Europe etc (I know I know, so did FTX smh) so companies like that seem to be a much safter bet and ones that should be used.  I use Bovada mainly (duelbits doesn't allow for US citizens) and they actually won't let you use the same btc address more than once to cash out, so just the opposite of "we don't recognize this address" which is total nonsense.

Sponsoring a sport or a professional teams is not a good way to measure whether a sportsbook is legit or scam.  I don't know if 1xBet is still sponsoring any soccer clubs, but not long ago they sponsored one of the big Spanish teams.  Now they're considered one of the bigger scammers in the industry, and also have been linked to 1xBit, which has many well documented scam accusations.

The best course of action is to never keep much (if any) bitcoin in any custodial wallet, sportsbook, casino, or even legit exchanges like Binance or CoinBase.

I watched a little XFL this weekend. Mostly highlights.  I saw Josh Gordan is playing for a team and had a nice TD.  I'll prob try and get in to it a little more.

I had a XFL game on yesterday while I was cleaning the kitchen, and it was pretty entertaining.  It's obvious the players are "average" in NFL terms, but hell it's football in late February.  Beggars can't be choosers.  Cheesy

I might sit down and watch a game this coming weekend, just to get my head wrapped around the different rules.
