1  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Canaan Avalon 1246 - No Temperature Readings on: September 05, 2021, 11:47:15 PM
I have around 75 of A1246 and 1166pros I bought this year. I have had nearly a 25% failure rate on the PSUs. The Avalons being sold this year are junk. So I've bit the bullet and bought a bunch of spare PSUs which has fixed most of the issues.

FWIW your blinking red light on the PSU itself definitely means the PSU has an issue. Usually if you keep running it it will eventual pop/fail and not run anymore at all.
2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are miners leeches? on: May 16, 2021, 05:35:27 PM
This thread is oddly absent the key value of the huge mining network and that is bitcoin's ledger (blockchain) security and finality. That is what the huge mining hashrate gives you. Any sort of attack that tries to rewrite the blockchain has to contend with a mining network larger than any computing network on earth so its nearly impossible to attack. If half the miners disappeared tomorrow, yes the difficulty would adjust in a few weeks to become less difficult to find blocks and block time would get adjusted back to 10 minutes.

And then that day, the network would be half as hard to attack and take over the proverbial 51% and attack the ledger.

Seems to me bitcoin has clearly evolved to a long term store of value as the most important use case currently. That use case requires super high security that the blockchain and money supply stays safe and the giant and growing mining hashrate is the best thing to ensure that.
3  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] The First Litecoin PPS Pool (litecoinpool.org) on: April 17, 2021, 06:11:54 PM
I can't get a new Goldshell LT5 to work on the pool. It says the pool is invalid. I can get it to work on other pools. Have you looked at the LT5 compatibility on the pool?

It seems unlikely that this is a compatibility issue, since connection and authentication are quite straightforward in the Stratum protocol.
If it says that the pool is invalid and does not connect at all, chances are that there is a mistake somewhere in the connection details (URL, username, and password). Make sure that you are using the username and password of one of your workers as defined in your pool account, keeping in mind that they are both case-sensitive. Feel free to send support an email with screenshots of the miner's configuration page if you'd like us to double-check.

Okay thanks. I'll double check everything (including cases, etc.) and send an email with the details if it still doesn't work. I've never had an issue before with L3s, etc. and this is my first LT5 to try.

FYI - I got the new Goldshell LT5s to work. Not sure what the issue was but their UI is kinda complicated to figure out but all working now. Smiley

So your example clearly shows 66 cent benefit on turbo  which means  it needs to run for 3300 days (3300 x .66 = 2178.00)  without breaking to reach a clear benefit for 1 unit.

You would risk running new unknown gear at this moment with zero knowledge of durability hoping that the 66 cent day profit will make it worth your while.

"at the moment with current coin prices" is the key  point of my statement.

so in a month if no one has broken gear on turbo you have a base line.  And you would lose about 20 bucks waiting for others to test the gear out.

or if prices spike hard and you make 32 a day vs 28 a day  so turbo gains 4 dollars a day .

but you could be correct so you earn the 66 cents and never break the gear you win the bet. you earn more your way.

my guess is run it on normal for a month and re assess what to do.

Compelling argument. Thanks for elaborating! Smiley
7  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain introduces the Antminer S17 Pro, Antminer S17, and the Antminer T17 on: April 28, 2019, 09:34:05 PM
I have metered smart switches for each circuit-PDU so the only way I could measure each cord would be to connect to two separate circuits which I'd rather not risk. Otherwise I'd need to measure with my amp-meter with a split cord which I don't have. If I can figure out how to safely do it I'll let you know.

UPDATE: I remembered I had a dual metered PDU that reports amps (in whole numbers) that I don't use that readout anymore.  So I tried one of the S17s on that so I could measure each cord separately.  It measured exactly 5 amps each on Turbo mode.  Exactly being that it only reports round numbers.  At my voltage that is around 1150 watts per cord.  But I'm sure it is 5.x not just 5 amps.  But either way, it seems to balance the load very close between the two cords.

... Turbo should never be used at the moment with current coin prices.

Normal speed should be used at the moment with current coin prices.

But I am sure some can create an example that shows turbo is smart to do at the moment.

I'd like to see your calculation/thinking.

By my profit model turbo mode makes sense currently.  But I am working with 5.4 cent electricity so that obviously will make a difference.  Simple Cryptocompare shows $8.50/day for Turbo, $7.84/day for Normal, $6.24/day for Low Power mode.  So Turbo currently makes the most profit.  I have wondered if the extra wear and tear is worth it and for that extra 8% profit and maybe not.

As energy price goes up then it would flip to where normal would win out and then low power mode.

it’s not definitive until someone tests it, depending on the amount of hash boards and the controller board it’s possible one plug pulls more than the other, bitmain isn’t exactly the best designers.

Agree on the pools - I was just being lazy in setting these up last night in a hurry.  I typically have 2 different pools list for most of my machines.  I seldom bother with a third. Smiley

And on the orientation of the miners, I hadn't seen a direct recommendation of vertical or flat but now that I have these machines, I planned to rearrange my shelving to allow vertical because it will let me fit the machines better in my hot box.  But good info on the heat flow, I'll pay attention when I rearrange them to see what the temps do.
10  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain introduces the Antminer S17 Pro, Antminer S17, and the Antminer T17 on: April 25, 2019, 03:04:33 AM
Got my first S17 Pro (50TH model) up and running.  As smooth of a startup as typical with Antminers.  Just plugged in both power cords and viola.

I've only tried "normal" mode so far and I'm getting 51 TH on average and about 2050 Watts measured with my smart switch.  So right at 40 J/TH efficiency.  The noise seems similar to other antminers.  Not noticeably louder to me but then again I have 40 antminers running in my garage so I probably wouldn't notice.  And I haven't tried turbo mode.

Edit1: Turbo mode results: 57 TH, 2500 Watts - 43.8 J/TH.  Pretty impressive! And not really any louder that I can tell.

Edit2: Low power mode: 40 TH, 1540 Watts - 38.5 J/TH.

Below is a pic of it and the dashboard.  I'll be trying the other modes when I get a chance.

I got 3 of the 50 TH Pros.  While more than I was hoping for still worth it IMO.
13  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: New firmware for antminer S9 - less power consumption on: October 24, 2018, 02:42:34 AM
Just updated one circuit (4 S9s).  I have heavy duty smart switches with live wattage on my circuits and saw an immediate drop in wattage by about 13%.  Nice!

Hashrate looks to be unchanged.  I'm on Slushpool.

How is "profitability" calculated? it doesn't make any sense to me.  Some examples from the ASIC tab today using 0.075 $ power:

Bitcoin: Revenue is showing as $6.46, profit is showing $3.74 and the profitability is showing as 100%.  There isn't any math I can figure where profitability is 100%.
Siacoin: Revenue showing 3.93 and profit is 1.59 and profitability is 60%.

The way I would normally look at profit margin or profit ratio would be profit over power so in the case of bitcoin it would be $3.74/($6.46-3.74)= 1.37 so a 1.37 or 137% profit ratio of net revenue over power.  I have no clue where the 100% comes from.

Can someone help explain or point to a formula that explains the profitability calculation on the site?

The naming is not accurate - its based on revenue in BTC.
100% is a base to compare other coins to either BTC or ETH.

aha! okay, well the numbers make sense then!  Thanks!

I still wish it was what I was looking for but at least I understand what it is Smiley

16  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: New asic iBeLink DSM6T 6th decred on: May 23, 2018, 02:40:25 AM
Ive had an ibelink, they dont hash consistently at what they say they do, these could be different, but these are probably as efficient as the d9 when you take that into account, the benefit is the price. Bitmain could still bring out something to undercut this. Could be x11 all over again.

Ibelink Miners hash correctly when cooled

Yes, that is my experience.  But having said that, my X11 was very sensitive to needing to stay cool which was a pain.  (Unlike my antminers which don't seem to care, I can run them hot as heck.)
17  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Cold start -> buggy control board? on: May 19, 2018, 02:15:58 AM
UPDATE and more info:

So tonight, everything started up just fine after still being shut down during peak price hours.  So based on that, I'm quite sure yesterday I must have had a condensation problem causing the antminers to have misc. electrical/connection problems.  Yesterday was very different weather than today.  I'm in southern FL so it definitely isn't getting cold.  But we had tons of rain the last few days so I think when I turned the hot miners off but kept my exhaust blowers going (my setup is in the garage) it was pulling in humid air so as the miners cooled to ambient they must have gotten moisture in the control cards, etc.  Today it wasn't raining anymore so it wasn't nearly as humid.  When I turned things on everything came up perfect and started hashing away no problem.

My solution next day will be to switch off the exhaust blowers right when I shut down the miners so it will stop airflow and even keep residual heat in the machines until I turn them back on.

Just additional FYI on my setup if anyone is interested:
- Have ~40 antminers (20 L3, 7 S9, 4 A3, 10 D3)
- Have 8 220 V 30 amp circuits so I can't quite run all my machines at once so I swap them out based on profitability.
- Started at the beginning of 2017 and have built out 3 "mining boxes" in my garage which have exhaust blowers venting through 12 inch duct through the attic out to the soffits to exhaust outside.
- Just got on a time of use plan so now my offpeak price is around 7.5cents/kwh which makes things way more profitable but I don't want to run during peak hours unless a particular coin profit margin over power is high enough.
- I also have some GPU units I run in the house and play around with different coins with those (currently mining Zcash)
18  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Cold start -> buggy control board? on: May 18, 2018, 02:33:40 AM
I'm starting to schedule my Antminers to turn off and on to take advantage of time of use power price.

I've noticed if they are down during the day and then I start them late in the night that they come up very buggy.  Many of the hashboards won't show up, temperatures are totally wacky, bad to no hashrate on some.  Then if I restart them after a few minutes they get better and everything starts acting normal.

Have others seen this? I'm wondering if maybe condensation is getting on the control boards during the day as they cool down (it has been very rainy and humid lately).  Any other ideas?
19  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: How to Kill mining process on Antminers? on: May 18, 2018, 01:49:17 AM
I had the same question a few weeks back and gave up on shutting down the mining on Antminers programatically.  I also sent a support question to Awesomeminer about it and they replied that for Antminers there isn't a good way to do it, the Antminers firmware/software will very stubbornly keep restarting the mining process.

So I opted for heavy duty smart switches instead.  Just got them running this week and just starting to try timing the off/on of my miners.  It's working but now I'm finding they don't do well starting up cold - they require a few restarts to get everything hashing/controlling right.
20  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Can you use a D3 fan on an L3+? on: May 13, 2018, 04:23:42 PM
I have an intake fan on an L3+ that is starting to go bad but I have some D3's I'm not using.  Anyone know if they are compatible? can I swap out the L3 fan with a D3 one?

Yes, I have done it and it works fine Smiley

Thanks! I'll give it a try.
