Why not do the same thing as how Litecoin was released?

I am new here. My stupid question is: "How was LiteCoin released?" "Is there any trick to prevent it from being cloned like crazy?"

Here's the quote from the main litecoin thread:

Quote
We have come up with a plan that we believe is most fair.  Some previous coins were released without Windows binaries or without source code; we consider this as unfair as it is unsafe.

We released the source code and binaries ahead of time... 3 days before launch.  People had time to compile the source and run the client on their machines against the Litecoin testnet.  So people were able to make sure everything was working well before the launch.  We also had a poll so that people can vote for a launch time that best suits them.  At the time of the launch (Oct 12 03:00 GMT), we released the genesis hash and everyone started mining at the same time.  All it took was a simple change in the config file in order to mine the real coin instead of the testnet coin.

Edit: I can assure you that a non-botched release will happen when it does, though.  I'll create the genesis block string and make binaries of the miner and qt wallet before release on an offline computer, then upload here encrypted with AES256 and a very long, strong password.  Then after a few weeks has past and it's been well distributed, the password will be revealed and everyone can begin mining at the same time.

tacotime, good luck with the coin. sounds interesting.

Maybe this was already suggested, but I didn't have time to read the whole thread. Why not do the same thing as how Litecoin was released?

Yes, Chainsaw paid first.
264  Economy / Collectibles / Re: CASASCIUS PHYSICAL BITCOIN - In Stock Now! (pic) on: May 23, 2013, 06:31:02 PM
I ordered a 1 BTC coin from hardbtc.org on May 17th.  I received the coin in the mail on May 22, at a US address.  They sent the coin to me unfunded, with a balance of 0 BTC as a security measure, to be funded by them later (apparently in case the coin was lost in the mail).  I promptly emailed them to ask them to send the 1 BTC to the address on the coin, but they have yet to do so, almost 24 hours later.

Should I be concerned?  I would not think it would take a day to send the BTC to the coin's address.

That seems strange. I thought all casascius coins are funded by Mike Caldwell. I don't think Mike is selling unfunded coins to reseller. He may ship them unfunded, but funds them after the coins are received. I guess it's possible that these coins were "lost" in shipment.

Would you be interested in selling just the 1BTC bill? Smiley

I would prefer to sell them as sets of all 4 bills.

268  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Who is the Gavin Andresen of litecoin? on: May 22, 2013, 08:13:37 AM
It would help increase the trust of litecoin tremendously (as well as the price) if Coblee put some real names on the litecoin.org site.  Bitcoin.org has always had Gavin's name along with at least three other real dudes on the site from the beginning -- at least as far as 2 years ago.  If Charles Lee is really Coblee, why doesn't he put his name on the site if he's already publicly known?

Yup, that's me. Thanks for the advice. I will look into putting real names up on the website.

271  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: coblee will be at Bitcoin 2013 conference! on: May 21, 2013, 12:41:34 AM
The conference went really well. I was super nervous during the alt-chain panel. I need more practice talking in public. Smiley

Good news is Litecoin was a surprisingly hot topic at the conference. When I first got to the conference, I was given a goody bag that contained a bitcoin and a litecoin gift wallet (See http://alittlebitofcoin.com)
Every attendee got one. Smiley

While walking around the conference, I keep overhearing people talking about litecoin and how they are mining it. On the first day, most people didn't know who I was, so I had fun listening in on these conversations without revealing myself. Smiley By the 2nd day (especially after the alt-chain panel), it seems like I can't walk 10 steps without someone coming up to me and saying "are you coblee?", "hey, you're the litecoin guy!", "hey, thanks a lot for creating litecoin!" That was an interesting experience.

I've talked to a quite few bitcoin businesses that plan to support Litecoin very soon. And I've collected quite a few business cards, and plan to pester them about supporting Litecoin. So Litecoin is definitely getting some love from the Bitcoin community.

We are working on updating Litecoin to 0.8. We want to make sure that it's well tested before releasing. Please be patient. Thanks.
275  Economy / Reputation / Re: DM Feedback thread! on: May 14, 2013, 04:43:04 PM
I did a 150 btc trade with DM90. He bought a bunch of my casascius coins and paid first. Glad to do business with him again.
