1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Real total supply on: June 20, 2021, 08:29:10 AM
If we subtract Satoshi’s 1 million BTC (as Plan B does in his STF2X model), should we also subtract the ~4 million BTC estimated to have been lost?

So that would make total supply around 16 million BTC. Some of these have a private key that is encrypted and the password forgotten, whereas others have lost the private key entirely, like the hard drive lost at the rubbish tip in Manchester in 2013 with a key for 800BTC on it. So the former will eventually be able to be brute-forced in coming decades when quantum computers can be accessed. But the lost keys are lost forever.
2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Medicalchain (MTN) ICO just a pump and dump? on: February 04, 2018, 05:04:29 AM
I recently came across a project that purports to enable end users to access and allow permissioned access to their medical records for medical and paramedical pracctitioners stored on Power Ledger, but interfacing with apps built on Ethereum, to solve the problem of multiple copies of "siloed" medical records in different locations, so there would then be one true copy of their records.

There is a flashy whitepaper at https://medicalchain.com and a number of vids on YouTube. The videos are pretty flash.

This Reddit link provides some insights into the team leading the project:

https://www.reddit.com/r/icocrypto/comments/7osqs1/medicalchaincom_review/

They had a very strange way of running their ICO. They claimed that auditors had stated they needed to do KYC at the time of the fundraising, so they demanded pre-registration of interest in the ICO by 21st Jan, then the ICO began at 10:00UTC on Feb 01. Tens of thousands attempted to upload KYC at the same time. The team says they manually examined each of over 1700 files (out of 45,000 submitted in the first 2 minutes) and kept people waiting around 8 hours, all the while as their confirmation screens kept changing from completed to pending.

I tried to upload links to Imageshack but the editor deleted them.

Anyone who criticised the ICO process was kicked off their Telegram page and Twitter accounts.

Pre-ICO sales of the ERC20 token (MTN) were staggered, starting at around USD$0.10. The ICO price was $0.25.

A friend of mine has been keeping me up to date on the discussion on Telegram. They now make no mention of the project and are only talking about the 2.5x gain that pre-ICO investors will make.

The are listing on Huobi, gate.io and Kucoin on 05Feb 0300UTC. The dump will be interesting to watch.

Now please, do tell what we call a scheme that requires new members to invest in order to fund the gain of early adopters? From what I have seen and the way they have conducted themselves, Medicalchain looks like it make be one such scheme.
3  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: Baikal Miner Giant B Group Buy temporary sold out on: January 09, 2018, 10:18:16 PM
I did do that and saw that they are temporarily sold out, hence my reference to the *next* batch.

Edit. I see. USD$3999. Got it. On the edge of my seat for the next batch.

Sorry, I have not trawled through the previous 17 pages. I just found this post after sending numerous unanswered emails and messages to Baikalminer.

When are you doing another group buy and what is the price please?

Email is staffnsnake@gmx.com
5  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: LBRY.IO - DICUSSION THREAD on: July 30, 2017, 02:21:50 AM
I just started to mine on SuprNova but I have no wallet. What are you all doing ?

Thanks

I have a wallet on a separate computer. Mining on PC, wallet on Mac. But you can still cash out to Poloniex and hold it there for a while while you decide when no whether to load a wallet. There is also a soft wallet for Android called coiniomi that is coming some time to iOS. You can store a wide variety of cryptos there, but it is still a hosted wallet and you won't have the private keys, so I am using the client and I have backed up the wallet.
6  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: What if I buy a bitcoin from MTGOX? on: February 27, 2014, 08:44:13 AM
2.2 Goxcoin is about $250 - a good income, but not massive...
Oh, you are talking about the scamgoxbtc? not the real BTC right?, I thought you where talking about REAL btc , where 2.2 will mean 1188 U$D a day, that's a lot of beer!!!

I was. I invested BTC2.2 (real) and "made" over 6.2 Gox BTC which, as can be seen in my post above, I subsequently lost in the crash and then converted to BTC0.7 (real) when I sold the Gox BTC in an effort to stem the haemorrhage.

I took a punt with BTC2.2. If I lose that then at current prices it's less than a day's work in fiat. If it goes up massively and I can't withdraw, then I'm screwed. If I can withdraw - at all, but better if it goes up - then I win. Just like an options contract but without the security of a contract. A gamble, but there it is.

Less than a day work in FIAT???  man I want your job!!!!, what do you do?, I make 3 BTC a month working as a freelance IT, and a lot of my friends will kill to have my kind of income, where do you live to earn so much money in one day!, I wouldn't make 2 BTC a day even if I grow and sell pot in my basement hehe.

It's a good deal less than many of my colleagues. I put people to sleep, usually with endless rants about crypto-currency, but sometimes with (legal) drugs. Then when the surgeon has finished butchering them, I wake them up.

Anyway, when Mt Gox imploded the other day I raced back to bitcoinbuilder and sold my Gox BTC at a third of what I paid for them, so now I have a bit over BTC0.7 to show for my oh-so-clever credit default swap. No such thing as a free lunch and all that. Who knows, maybe they will resume withdrawals, but I don't know where Mark Karpeles is going to find the missing BTC750000 to fund them, even if he has been buying up at low prices on his own exchange.

Lesson learned.

9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / I just got an article on Bitcoin and Litecoin in Australia's national paper! on: January 29, 2014, 07:31:44 PM
This is my first post here; I usually post at litecointalk.org. Today I had an article in "The Australian" on how I am accepting Bitcoin and Litecoin as payment for anaesthetic services.

If there is a paywall, let me know and I'll post a screen shot.

Cheers,

Edit:

okay, "suspicious link removed". Here is a screen shot series:
