141  Other / Off-topic / What is the coolest thing you can buy on Amazon for under $20? on: December 15, 2014, 06:10:16 AM
Trying to gather some ideas for this year's gift exchange at work. The limit's $20 so anything at that value's fair game. The company has a fairly laid back atmosphere so gag gifts are open season for me. I'd like to get somebody something they could use on the daily preferably. Maybe like a survival kit or a knife.
142  Other / Off-topic / Re: Best Cartoon Ever? on: December 15, 2014, 06:02:51 AM
Ninja turtles was pretty cool back in the day but i would have to vote Family Guy number 1.

+1 for 90's Ninja Turtles cartoons back in the day. I don't know what they're showing now but I'm kind of wary of looking because of all the crap they show to kids nowadays. 90's Transformers were pretty damn good too, I remember waking up at 6 am as a kid to watch that on UPN or whatever that channel was.

Some honorable mentions; Alvin and the Chipmunks, Darkwing Duck, Gargoyles, Magic School Bus

Sorry for the bump.

Still kind of wondering if there are anymore recommendations?

I'm in a similar situation. About to graduate from Uni and I'll have a while until I take the GRE for grad school. I was thinking of Phuket, Thailand myself but still open to suggestions. It's a little bit different for me because I could do a little work while abroad so I won't make much of a financial dent.

Considering traveling and backpacking SE Asia because it's extremely cheap there. Best to go with a buddy though I hear.
144  Other / Off-topic / Re: What watch do you wear? on: December 14, 2014, 06:44:14 AM
I haven't worn a watch since middle school. Just feels cumbersome and bothersome to have it around my wrist for some reason. I just check my phone nowadays if I need the time. I think that's what everyone does these days but I could be wrong.

Those new smart-watches look promising though. I'm about to look into what those babies can do.
145  Other / Off-topic / Re: Why is reddit so popular? on: December 14, 2014, 06:41:03 AM
I personally really like the interface. Simple to use and customize. Lots of subreddits for any topic you can think of really.

I've received help on my physics homework on /r/askscience, learned how to buff out scratches on my car from /r/autodetailing, learned about bitcoin from /r/bitcoinmarkets, gotten some sound advice on a business model on /r/entrepreneur, got help on building credit on /r/personalfinance just to name a few.

I guess you don't like it much because you haven't really done anything productive with it. But once you have it's great.
146  Other / Politics & Society / Re: One of those times when it's OK to laugh at atheists. on: December 14, 2014, 06:30:21 AM
Now that's just silly. Don't patronize the diner if you don't like their rules. Why draw attention to atheists on a bad note like this? Retarded reasoning to sue if ya ask me.
147  Other / Politics & Society / Re: How to make a career fit a relationship before having a relationship? on: December 14, 2014, 06:25:24 AM
The key to a successful relationship is compromise in my opinion. Even if you find the perfect soul mate, in one way or another you guys will have things you won't agree on. That's the make or break point. One of you has to agree to disagree and put up with the other. This was one thing I learned after my 3rd girlfriend. I didn't compromise for her and it broke us up. Completely my fault. I learned from it though and I'm doing a million times better in my 4th relationship.
148  Other / Politics & Society / In 1965 the CIA was in charge of a torture program that killed 40,000+ people. on: December 13, 2014, 09:36:55 AM

Just imagine what else is going on that we don't know about. The CIA basically seem to be the American SS/Gestapo.
149  Other / Politics & Society / Re: cop assaults man after being asked to move his vechicle on: December 12, 2014, 06:05:51 AM
Ah, the good ole' resisting arrest charge. Need to arrest someone but don't have anything to go on? Slap em with a "resisting arrest" charge. The justice system in the U.S. is literally a joke and nothing's gonna change any time soon. A damned shame if you ask me. What happened to "land of the free"?
150  Other / Off-topic / Re: Can a man-made computer become conscious? on: December 12, 2014, 05:58:16 AM
What you're describing is called the Singularity. The premise is as our technology increases exponentially, there will be a point in time where human created AI will inevitably outpace our own intelligence. What does a smart AI do once it is activated? It tries to create another smarter version of itself of course! If allowed to continue over a number of generations, you're gonna have a pretty scary AI and a force to be reckoned with. I'd say this is one scenario where humans will wipe themselves out, amongst the many other doomsday scenarios we're capable of.
151  Other / Off-topic / Re: Aliens vs. Predator vs. Terminators, who would win? on: December 11, 2014, 07:07:07 AM
The terminator should win, but if the Xenomorphs realize their blood could dissolve the T-800 then who knows. The T-1000 on the other hand should prove to be much more difficult to kill.

But the thing is the Xenomorphs wouldn't be able to easily detect the T-800's because they aren't technically organic right?
152  Other / Off-topic / Re: Aliens vs. Predator vs. Terminators, who would win? on: December 11, 2014, 07:06:01 AM
Perhaps the Xenomorphs would have the upper hand in the numbers game you provided, but if there was one of each the obvious choice is the Predator.  Cool

Yeah I was a little unsure how to number everything. But based on past comics I've read, it seems each predator can basically take out at least 30 or 40 Xenomorphs before they die. For the T-800's I wasn't too sure because they're in a completely different universe.
153  Other / Off-topic / Aliens vs. Predator vs. Terminators, who would win? on: December 11, 2014, 06:33:43 AM
The scenario: 400 Xenomorphs are dropped off on a remote island. There are 10 Predators that prepare to do battle and are drop shipped on site. 30 T-800's are also mobilized to exterminate both threats. Who would win?

If you have a better idea of how to balance this scenario, go for it. I was kinda unsure how many to put for each category while still being fair.
154  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Lockheed says makes breakthrough on fusion energy project on: December 11, 2014, 06:27:52 AM
Every time I read one of these articles there's always the phrase "10 - 15 years until commercial feasibility". 10 more years has always been said on fusion technology ever since the 40's. I wouldn't hold my breath too long. Give us working proof that this is commercially viable and I'll be listening. Until then, don't get your hopes up everyone.
155  Other / Politics & Society / Re: China Just Overtook The US As The World's Largest Economy on: December 11, 2014, 06:22:41 AM
A lot of people are reacting negatively to this news but fail to see a lot of the good that comes out of it. For one thing, since manufacturing costs in China vs the U.S. is almost reaching parity, this forces a lot of U.S. based companies to bring back their operations onto the home front. In the end this will be better for our own economy.

Hell, the Chinese are even outsourcing some jobs to the U.S. which can only help OUR own economy.

156  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Cop Attacks Man for Recording on: December 11, 2014, 01:18:44 AM
He broke the one rule; don't ever talk to the police. They are not your friends. That policeman did not have his interests in mind, he was protecting the airline. They work for the corporations, not you or me.

Again, don't talk to the police. Here is a lawyer with 20+ years of criminal litigation experience explaining why you should never speak to the police, it can only hurt you.

157  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Could bitcoin users get a piece of land somewhere? on: December 11, 2014, 12:47:08 AM
There is already a Bitcoin land: http://mw.micronation.org/wiki/Woodland_Patchwork

The curious fact is that it is in Japan, the supposed land of mysterious Bitcoin inventor...  Smiley

I wonder about the authenticity of this micronation since there aren't any supporting articles or news clips. Anything investigatory into the claim that this is a real thing. I'd be surprised if the Japanese government openly allowed this sort of thing. I'd have to see some solid proof and evidence of its existence to take this wiki article seriously.

Congratulations, that's quite a feat. What were your best and most memorable moments on the forum? How about your worst memories?
159  Other / Off-topic / Re: Piratebay taken down on: December 10, 2014, 08:57:38 PM
The Pirate Bay isn't even on a true server anyway. They're typically loaded onto virtual servers and only the front end-load balancer is exposed. The back-end is stored in RAM. The police won't be able to access all the information that contains cloud hosting location, etc. There's only a couple of things I can think of off the bat that would reveal that information, but if it hasn't been done yet then I'm confident TPB isn't in any huge threat of being permanently disabled. The people behind it really know their stuff.
160  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin taxation ?? on: December 10, 2014, 08:51:49 PM
Question for the more law savvy here: What if I sent 30 btc to a "friend" overseas at $500 a piece. Then a couple of months later when the price per btc reaches $1,000, your "friend" then "sells" back the btc to you and you immediately buy something of value for it. There is no net gain in this scenario.
