Yeah, not happy about that at all. They can run an exchange but don't know how to operate a bulk e-mailing program? Doesn't exactly inspire confidence.
I've withdrawn my coins and will create a new account with a different e-mail address, just to be sure.

Is Britcoin down? No updates on bitcoincharts since 13:42 and the site is not loading....

Reboot?
Yes - that worked. All running fine now. So the policy of "turn it off and turn it on again" actually works!

Thank you! I have a problem getting 1.3.1 running on Windows. I'm starting using the following parameters: cgminer -o http://deepbit.net -u myusername -p mypass -D And get the following response: [2011-07-20 14:09:44] JSON decode failed(1): '[' or '{' expected near '<' [2011-07-20 14:09:44] Received kill message Followed by a "This program has stopped working" message in Windows. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and have SDK 2.4. Any idea what could be wrong?

It's going to be stuck at ~$10 for a long time, it will be the most stable it has ever been, then slowly drop lower as people realise that the cause is dead.
When the new currency arrives it will drop to $1.
I always chuckle when I read that Bitcoin will become worthless when a new currency arrives. Not sure if you have actually used the internet over the last 20 years, but usually when an idea comes along and it gets a decent following it isn't just copied, it's copied a LOT. It is inevitable that something Bitcoin inspired is going to come along. So if a new currency or three comes out everyone jumps ship and abandons the current one for something that has no guarantee of return in the short or long-term?

I think the long weekend in the US has caused an elongated weekend dip which in turn has shaken the confidence of the market. People sell out thinking it's a crash which drives prices down lower. The upcoming difficulty hike in just over a day is probably contributing too, with miners thinking about cashing out and selling up.
I expect to see it hit around seven or eight dollars before before prices start to rise again, but there's nothing to stop it from going lower than that. This is only really a problem if you're not in BItcoin for the long haul, I guess.

I'm absolutely fine with the split. Some good choices here in general which should prove useful for other miners.

The five slot board with Linux is fine if you're okay with risers, DIY mounts, and creative cooling solutions. It's a personal preference of couse, but I prefer self contained rigs that can be mounted with stock components and without too much fiddling - which helps maintain their re-sale value too. :-)

Asrock 890GX-EXTREME3 is a good choice with 3 double-spaced graphics card PCIe slots (no adaptor cables needed). Japanese caps, nice layout, BIOS-based core unlocker, and takes nice-and-cheap AMD Sempron 140s too. Bitcoin address (if I r teh winn0r ;-): 122e6qqx9uqDuPLBGECESsmU4Pc6E1E2rw

That's a lot of manual work (read: high costs) that would need to be re-couped through charges, most likely. People don't come (very) cheap.
I'm also comfortable with proof of ID, and to be honest I think it's the way markets will need to go if they want to ward off being shutdown - although if governments go after Bitcoin in general, then that will be a bit of a moot point.

That legislation looks like it pretty neatly covers Britcoin's operations. Is there a reason for them to be exempt from needing to do all that scrutiny of customers and transactions stuff? I think the only weak element there is the use of OpenID, where customer contact details are not explicitly requested, and the non-verification of customer identity (copy of a utility bill, driving licence, passport, etc).

Ahhhh... of course, that makes a lot of sense. Bank transfers are traceable and non-anonymous, cash payments are not (or rather, considerably less so). How on earth am I going to be able to launder my profits from prostitution and crack dealing now?

Thanks genjix - these updates are very much appreciated.
Just a quick question - would you have any objection to users making cash deposits at bank branches? I could understand you objecting to this (although there is nothing to stop people trying anyway) just in case the reference number was not captured/entered correctly by the teller at the time of deposit.

Thanks for the update! Can you tell us what impact this has on processing bank deposits? Is there any kind of backlog at the moment? It would be good to get a view on how quickly or otherwise transfers will be processed.

I suspect that if the back-end is still down/broken then that would cause the lack of updates on bitcoincharts and would also explain any delays in bank transfers materialising in user profiles. The funds (including my own) are probably sat in the bank account, but genjix is remaining as cautious as ever (as he has done so far) to ensure that nothing gets screwed up during these platform changes. Fingers crossed that he can get everything back to normal and stable before the price starts to motor again!
