1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: R9 280X need moar Hashes! :( on: March 03, 2014, 08:41:20 AM
"device" : "0-1" specifies, that this one is the setting for Card 0 and 1 aka both R9 280X

Well I just learned something new today thanks  Smiley

Those need the same settings, it does not change the output whether i run one or two cards with this setting. The 290 only needs one gputhreat so it is on another cgminer instanz.

However this is not entirely true: they may both be R9 280X, but being from different brands they need different settings.
Just as a personnal example:
I use 1080Mhz core and 1500 mhz Mem on my Asus R9 280X for 750Khs, but if I use the same settings on my MSI R9 280X, the hashrate is nowhere near 700Khs, it only hashed well at 1030Mhz core.

I don't know what are the fine tuning for Powercolor and Sapphire

Hi mate,

As you have 3 different graphics card, your cgminer settings should state a different arguments for each card, separated by a ","
Here you only have a "generic" setting for all your cards, and I believe that is why you don't reach their full potential.

Also I would not use afterburner to set the core clock and mem clock, but add them to the .conf (also separated by "," for each card, in order)
3  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Sunday improvement drama - Bricked card on: March 02, 2014, 03:27:23 PM
Well, as it turns out, I was able to reflash it, but not with the original BIOS. I'm wondering if it is because of this UEFI thing (I remember that I had a warning with VBE7 regarding UEFI being removed.

I flashed it with a modified version, with 1.1V, so the card is up and running again! I mean, more like up and walking as now the hashrate went from 750khs to 560khs on the revived card... any suggestion?

Thanks for your support guys!  Grin

edit: the revived GPU gets "sick" after 2 minutes of mining, what does it mean?
edit 2: I put the revived GPU to 1.093, I now get a @#%load of HW errors
edit 3: I put it back to 1.2V (but not via the original BIOS), and it works fine now
4  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Sunday improvement drama - Bricked card on: March 02, 2014, 03:07:29 PM
Did you try reflashing the original BIOS with the "-f" option?

Hi crazyates,

Yes, actually I bricked the card when I tried to reflash the original BIOS, using:
atiflash -f -p 1 1.rom

That's when I got the error "ERROR 0FL01"
5  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Sunday improvement drama - Bricked card on: March 02, 2014, 02:06:41 PM
Hi guys

As winter is over in Europe, and temperatures begin to raise, I decided to undervolt my R9 280Xs from Asus.
I tested it on my smaller rig, which has only two of those cards, here is the story:

I followed the guide from cryptobadger (and ignored his warning to abort if there was no BIOS switch to recover in case of fail, silly me...)

Modified the VDDC from 1.2V to 1.087V then flashed the modified BIOSes to the cards.

Card 1 had no problem, hashing at same speed as before and cooler than before.
Card 2 had several problems: lower hashrate; or sick; or HW errors; or not hashing.

So I thought I would bump a little its voltage, to 1.093V. Did the same, modified the BIOS then flashed it back to the card.

Problems were less frequent BUT upon some reboots, it had the same problem as not hashing (0 Kh/s). I thought I would put back the original BIOS... BUT then begins the BIG trouble: ATIflash would not complete the BIOS flash and has the "ERROR 0FL01".

I now have a nice and expensive paperweight  Undecided

Has anyone been able to recover a bricked GPU knowing that R9280X-DC2T-3GD5 do not have the safety switch?

(morality: only undervolt cards with a BIOS switch)
6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Stability with four Asus R9 280X on: February 26, 2014, 09:53:20 PM
I'm having the same problem with 2 Asus R9 280X DCU2 Tops. With 1 card I have been able to mine for 3 weeks without a problem now. So with the money I made I went for the second one and now I'm having random reboots and everything.

The thing is, when I set the Intensity to a lower amount like 8-10 it goes on about 15-20 mins with low khashes, if I set it to 12, system reboots itself after 10-15mins and with intensity 13 it reboots almost instantly without showing me hash rates..

Both the new card and the old one runs without a problem when I use them solo.

My rig,

MSI P67A-GD55 (B3)
i7 2600k
8 gig ram
Xilence 800W psu
2 x Asus R9 280X DCU2 TOP
Bios is the latest version: 04.06.05

The reboot process is kind of interesting though, looks like a bios reboot in which all system looks like it had been shut down(all fans and everything stops for a second then restarts on its own)

I have been fighting with this for a day now, can you share what else could work besides going for BAMT, I am really a linux noob don't think I have what it takes to deal with the linux just yet.

Appreciate any help guys, cheers.

Hi,

Don't be afraid of BAMT, I was a noob at Linux, actually BAMT was the first time I ever touched Linux. And I'm still a noob, but this tutorial is very detailed.
Also bear in mind that a USB stick consumes (and costs) less than a HDD...

An did I mention that it takes only 15 minutes to get a new rig up and running with this? (time to assemble the rig and copy the image on the flashdrive)
7  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Which R9 290? Twin Frozr or DCII?? on: February 20, 2014, 08:09:41 AM
Recently I had four Twin Frozr (280X though), from separate batches, and each of them started to leak oil from fans after a few days (less than a week). The mess on my rig with all this oil  Angry

Never had this problem with DC2, but I'm not sure if they use the same coolers for their 280X and 290.
8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: EU Motherboard with UK PSU etc on: February 01, 2014, 01:51:55 PM
That's the exact same thing, no worries to have here.

The only thing that differs a UK PSU vs a EU PSU is the kettle lead.

Go ahead!
9  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can I use 4 Radeon GPU with this mobo? Crossfire on: January 28, 2014, 07:17:15 PM
Crossfire is totally useless for mining.

Do not use it if you want to mine.

That is true sir.
10  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can I use 4 Radeon GPU with this mobo? Crossfire on: January 28, 2014, 06:41:53 PM
The motherboard manufacturer's website says it supports quad crossfire. How is that ambiguous?

Quad crossfire could be done with 2x Radeon 7990 which have 2 chips each, so I think it is indeed ambiguous.

Hey Everyone!

I am completely new to mining and I would love to get some advice on how to start...does anyone have any links to a beginners guide, one that goes step-by-step?

I would like to mine mostly Altcoins like Dogecoin/Mooncoin or Litecoin...Any advice?

Thank you very much for your time and consideration Smiley

How about USB3 style risers? They seem to be more and more popular. I haven't tried them myself though

14  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Any ASRock 970 Extreme4 owners out there? Problems with GPUs on: January 24, 2014, 11:37:13 PM
Hi guys!

Well, I've made some improvements lately, since I'm running my rig on BAMT. It was able to run for 4 straight days without problem, and just crashed a few hours ago.

Hi,

At one point I had 3 out of 4 cards detected by my device manager and cgminer. Now only slots 1 and 5 are detected and no matter how I configure the rig the mobo will not detect any other cards. I even attempted to reset the CMOS, clear all amd drivers and sdk. Reinstall app sdk 2.9 and amd driver 13.11 beta to support the 280x. The cards that are detected are being detected as the right hardware so I know the drivers are fine. My powered risers(1x-16x) are all working and my psu(two corsair 750w w/add2psu) plugs are all connected.

WHAT AM I MISSING?

Running on windows 8.1, which I do not think would cause any issues. I have read that others have used this mobo successfully without the need to short the A1-B17 on the mobo pcie slots.

I’m going crazy trying to configure this thing to run properly.

If all else fails, RMA. What other Mobo would you suggest and am I missing a step somewhere to get this running properly?

Hi Will2117,

Have you double checked your risers?

What works for my motherboard is that I use all the slots except the second PCIe16x (the second blue one). I did not have to short any pins.

PCIe 1x #1 Powered riser 1x to 16x
PCIe 16x #1 Unpowered riser 16x to 16x
PCIe 1x #2 Powered riser 1x to 16x
PCIe 16x #3 Powered riser 1x to 16x

If you have a spare USB key, try BAMT, it's way faster to install (drivers are already installed) and pretty stable.

Ahh I get it now, thanks guys! I hope we'll be able to upload some in the near future

I give it an 8 out of 10 stars. I liked the effects and the pacing was tight, but I didn't care too much for the native American, tree of life, hippy dippy stuff.

17  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Help me tweak my 280x DC2T-3GD5's! on: January 16, 2014, 09:28:29 PM
All very good insights, thanks!
I installed the chipset drivers last night and that bumped speeds up to 700. So that was good. However, playing around with clock speeds indeed sometimes increased hash rates but sometimes actually didn't do anything at all. Seems to be a tricky balancing act. Leaving gpu clocks at 1070 but increasing ram clocks to 1700 (from 1600) seemed to have made quite a difference. I'm going to have to try down-clocking it to 1500 but that does feel quite weird heh! Smiley

Also, I've done that while connecting to a switching pool, it probably would make sense solo-mining when tweaking as you'd want to rule out pool-connection effects...

Lastly, I just heard I should set the priority to above normal... still need to try that out tonight.

Btw I do use the newer, NON-v2 version.

Hey mate,

I have the exact same cards. I have between 740 kh/s (4 cards on one MB) and 750 kh/s (single card on motherboard) with those settings:

Quote
--scrypt -I 13 -w 256 --thread-concurrency 8192 -g 2 --auto-fan --temp-target 75 --temp-overheat 85 --gpu-engine 1080 --lookup-gap 2 --gpu-memclock 1500 --scan-time 1 --queue 0

Hope it helps
18  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Are my risers bad? HELP! (riser-cut) on: January 16, 2014, 09:22:22 PM
I have the same risers. I had a lot of headache when I started using them: cards not being recognized, etc...
Turns out they were faulty, and my seller (UK based) exchanged them.
19  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Stability on Asrock 970 Extreme4 and four Asus R9 280X on: January 16, 2014, 07:02:51 PM
Might still be the risers, can you try 4 powered risers? Otherwise try to measure the power used by the PSU's

Hi gbrs,

Thank you for your message. I ordered a kill a watt, but it did not arrive yet. So what I did is that I installed BAMT on a flashdrive, well... my minion has been hashing solid for the past 19 hours!!!

So it was either a Windows problem or HDD related...

Anyway I find BAMT extremely efficient and cost effective, so I'll stick to that  Grin
20  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Stability with four Asus R9 280X on: January 13, 2014, 06:52:16 PM
Hi guys,

I am desperately looking for help. I've been looking for a fix for days on this forum and google without success yet.

The problem is that my rig cannot mine on four GPUs without crashing and rebooting randomly. The longest I was able to mine on four GPUs is 7 hours, but on average my rig crashes within an hour of mining.

Here is my component list:

Asrock 970 Extreme4
AMD Sempron 135
4GB of RAM (Hynix)
4x Asus R9 280X DCU2 Top
2x 850W Akasa Cobra 82% efficiency (two GPUs on each PSU)
3x powered riser 1x to 16x
1x unpowered riser 16x to 16x

Windows 7 x64 Ultimate
CGMiner 3.7.2
Drivers AMD 13.12

Here is my .bat file:

Quote
setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1
C:\cgminer-3.7.2-windows\cgminer.exe --scrypt -I 13 -w 256 --thread-concurrency 8192 -g 2 --auto-fan --temp-target 75 --temp-overheat 85 --gpu-engine 1080 --lookup-gap 2 --gpu-memclock 1500 --scan-time 1 --queue 0 --no-submit-stale -o stratum+tcp://(pool) -u (user) -p (pass)

Total hashrate is about 2.96 Mh/s

The funny thing is that it runs normally without crash with 3 GPUs.

At first, I thought it was a riser issue, as I had lost hair trying to make my rig detect my GPUs, just to figure out that it was due to faulty risers. I swapped them, but still crashing.

Then I reinstalled my drivers, no change.

Then I thought it was due to a temperature problem, although my cards run at 82° for the hottest. Still, I put a temp target to 75°, and it still crashes randomly.

I think that 850w x2 is enough for four of those cards, am I right?

Can anybody help me please? It is so frustrating...  Huh

(PS: I run the same .bat file on my main PC with one 280x, and it just rocks!)  Grin
